  • The maize triangle of Otavi, Grootfontein and Tsumeb is often bypassed en route to the northern and north-eastern regions. Although we always admire the beauty of the Otavi area, a fusion of craggy dolomite rock and verdant trees that receives 600-800mm of rain per year, we rarely pause along the way.

We entered the heart of the triangle recently and made a pleasant stop to visit the family-owned winery where we met Gilmar and Tamara Boshoff, a couple who put their passion for life into their boutique wines. From picking to bottling, every part of the wine-making process is carefully undertaken by hand. Even the delicious array of snacks served at their wine-tasting is made by Gilmoreʼs mom, Ebbie, with homemade cottage cheese and herbs from the garden.

The cellarʼs ethos is to keep their production as close to nature as possible, creating wines that express the character of the Otavi mountain valley. Thonningii, named after the wild fig, Ficus thonningii, has a relaxed rustic farm-style atmosphere. A vintage tractor and scuttling chickens add rural ambience to the scenic rows of vineyards flanked by the Otavi mountains.

Keep a careful look out for the wine cellar because itʼs not easily visible from the road. Youʼll find it about 11km north of Otavi on the B8 to Grootfontein. Phone ahead to book a wine-tasting, which includes a scrumptious snack platter and a vineyard and cellar tour. Itʼs well worth making the stop for Namibian wine, made with heart and soul, and a good dollop of love.

Even if you are not a wine-lover, you may be converted at this intimate and homely wine-cellar and end up with a bottle – or two – under your arm. I know I was. Contact them on: boshoffwines(at)gmail.com or 081 041 6083.

  • Did you know that Namibia has the largest known intact meteorite in the world? And, it can be found between Tsumeb and Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region.

The 60-ton, 2.7-metre-long chunk of iron fell through atmosphere some 80 000 years ago. It was discovered by chance in 1920 by Jacobus Hermanus Brits when he was ploughing his fields. It is composed of 84% iron and 16% nickel, with traces of cobalt.

A meteorite originates in outer space. It can be an asteroid or debris from an object like a comet that survives its passage through the Earthʼs atmosphere and its impact with the Earthʼs surface. This is no mean feat, as meteorites can hit the Earthʼs atmosphere travelling at about 90 000 kilometres an hour!

When it enters the atmosphere, the frictional heat causes the surface of the meteorite to start to melt and evaporate. The resulting gas shell of air and evaporated meteorite material is electrically charged (ionised) and glows brightly. At this stage, it is known as a meteor – or a shooting/falling star. Most meteors disintegrate shortly after entering the Earthʼs atmosphere.

The Hoba Meteorite was declared a national monument in 1955. Today, it can be visited on the Hoba West farm; a rare opportunity to touch a shooting star. Before sure to duck when you approach the ʻBeware of falling meteoritesʼ sign!

Namibia is also home to meteorites from the Gibeon-Meteorite-Shower or -Swarm, which were scattered over an area of 20 000km². Some of these, relatively smaller, chunks are displayed in the Post Street Mall and at the Geological Survey Museum in Windhoek.
