FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH JUNE 18, 2014 WINCHESTER, VA.

VOL. 75 NO. 6

A Loving & Caring Church Transforming God’s Vision Into Action

Many years ago Jerry Willis of Navarre, Florida, along with two

of his friends, spent five days adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. They

were on a small, inflatable, rubber raft. The three men feel they

have a shark to thank for their rescue.

The men were asleep when a shark bumped the raft and awakened them. They tried to fight

off the shark with the only weapon they had—a four-inch pocketknife. The commotion in the raft

caused them to be spotted by a seaman on a passing freighter. They were quickly rescued. Willis

said afterward, “If the shark hadn’t attacked, we would never have been seen by the men on the

freighter.”

Many times in life we face crisis situations—events that create fear and anxiety. Several of

you have recently faced, or are in the midst of, such a situation. Those crises can cause our faith to

be shaken or even shattered. But on the other hand, crises can increase our faith, it can lead us to

faith.

God has the power to help us. He can be trusted with whatever life brings. God can even

turn bad situations to good account. He can use means that would not occur to us. He calls each of

us to place our faith and trust in Him.

Vacation Bible School is always a special week in the life of our church. This year’s VBS is from July

14-18, beginning at 5:00 PM with a light dinner and concluding each night at 8:00 PM. The theme

this year is “Weird Animals.” From the VBS material—”Kids love crazy, weird animals… the weirder

the better. So we searched the globe for the most special, unique, never-before-seen animals we

could find to help kids discover what Jesus’ one-of-a-kind love means in their lives. All new Kid Vid

Cinema shares real stories of real kids who rely on Jesus’ love to face life’s challenges.

Each day will open and close with a large group celebration in the sanctuary. There will be

songs, music videos and verses for each day. Each age group will participate in four different activi-

ties: story time, crafts and activities, a video series, and games related to the story.

Tie Publication Schedule

We are continuing with a monthly publication schedule of the TIE which significantly reduces communication

costs. The website and online calendar will continually be updated and bulletin announce-ments will be updated each week. Each Tie will be a calendar Tie for the subsequent month and will be published later in the month. August Calendar Tie — July 23rd.

A Warm Welcome is extended to Mike and Dorothy James who made their decision for church member-ship on June 1, 2014.

Hunting Ridge Retreat Workday

There will be a workday at Hunting Ridge Retreat on Saturday June 28, 2014. The workday will consist of cutting down dead, leaning trees (called widowmakers), sawing them into firewood and running the firewood through a wood splitter.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their chain saws (if they have one), work gloves, and plenty of water. If a volunteer does not have a chainsaw, there are plenty of other tasks that can be done to help. The workday will begin at 7:00 AM. Anyone interested

can contact Mark Jones at 540-247-1422.

Summer Book Club

Thursday, July 31, 2014 will begin a 5 week book club to be held in the lower auditorium from 10:00 am - 11:15 am facilitated by Lori Horne Pendleton. Have you wondered where God is when the innocent suffer? Where is God when our prayers

seem unanswered? Why is it so difficult to understand God’s will? We will tackle these questions and more while reading Why? by Adam Hamilton. We will also spend a few minutes each week watching a DVD that works with our reading schedule. Personal

copies of the book will be provided. Please call 662-5367 and sign up by July 21, 2014 so books can be ordered.

The church picnic kicked off our very busy summer. We are geared up and excited about all the camps on the schedule for the summer. They bring so much energy, laughter and love for God that it is impossible not to smile and enjoy them.

A huge thank you to Nelson Isenhower, Jim Hollinger, Rik Pell, Bill Headley, John Taylor and Jerry Cather for their hard work in getting the grounds prepared for the picnic this year. You guys did an amazing job, it looked great!

We encourage you to come and visit what God has created. Try to catch a fish or two, have a picnic, play some ball or just sit and enjoy God's beauty. Just remember when coming to visit, call ahead and check the schedule. We look forward to seeing you!
