Mark 12:28-31

Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners

1 Timothy 1:12-16 (Apostle Paul)

12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, 13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

Jesus didn't come to please the religious crowd. Jesus didn't come to pander to the social crowd. Jesus didn't come to hang out with the wild bunch. Instead, Jesus entered the world to save sinners. When we look back over the Gospel of Luke, we see Jesus reach out to men and women, young and old, powerful and forgotten, de-mon possessed, and the politically connected. He came to save sinners of all shapes, sizes, and stripes. He came to save you and me.

Today's Prayer

Holy and righteous God, thank you for your great desire to bring salvation to all people -- including me. Open my heart and move me to reach out to others who need to know your grace. Even more, dear Father, stir me to seek the lost as passionately as your Son did ... and still does.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

1. What has been your experience with spending time with "sinners"? How have you learned to maintain your integrity while spending time with people who aren't living in the Kingdom of God? Do you think Jesus declared at the banquet that he didn't agree with their lifestyle?

2. Why was Jesus' action of eating at Levi's banquet risky for him? Why were the Jewish leaders so put off by Jesus' attending this banquet? What group of people might you spend time with that would raise religious eyebrows today?

3. Why is this an amazing picture of the grace of the King? How is this a picture of God "dragging the future (Heaven) back into the present?"

4. What would it look like for our church, your small group, to live out this story that we read here?
