CHRIST… OFFERS HIS LIFE FOR OURS … AND GATHERS THE ‘LOST SHEEP’

Your kingdom is not of this world, Lord Jesus since you carry this world on your shoulders as a shepherd his lost sheep.

To show your dominion, no other sceptre than your cross. No other strength than your mercy: no other right than your victorious love.

Your offer to us your life in exchange for your death, because your power wants to give us back to ourselves and snatch us out of the yoke of remorse.

Your kingdom already inhabits us, Lord Jesus; at your word the child in us rises, you recreate it almost unbeknown to us.

Everything journeys in you toward its beauty; still frail, joy touches the earth; heaven is near, near, its radiance.

Commission Francophone Cistercienne: Sur la trace de Dieu

A few words from Father Vincent …….

Here we are with only a week and a half to the end of strict lockdown …. we hope! Much will depend if we have gone far enough below the critical ‘1’ and are still dropping. We continue streaming Masses, opening the churches for an hour per day (both churches on Sundays): thank you to the stewards for their commitment.

I attend the occasional Webinar which supports us during this time of pandemic; sometimes they are National and other times International. Many ideas are generated, from experience or forward thinking, which gives us ideas as to how to respond to the demands during the pandemic and speculating as to the future ‘shape’ of Church and Church practice!

Any creative ideas always welcome (a couple of people have already given ideas for the Christmas season which may not work but worth looking at). One of the huge challenges outside of daily / weekly pastoral care (which can be hit and miss!) is our development and implementation of liturgy so that we produce the best with the restrictions that are in place! A principle to always remember is that ‘liturgy’ is ‘action’, ‘participation’, ‘engagement’ and not just ‘watching’!! Not easy when we cannot be present to liturgy in the flesh as it were! That is why it is important …… in fact I would say ‘essential’, that we create an ‘engagement’ environment at home: a ‘holy corner’; a ‘prayer table’; that we also actively engage with streamed Masses (respond; kneel; stand; have a bible open on the appropriate page …… all week!). Think of your own way of ‘engagement’ with streamed Masses … let me know!! ...... I can tell others!!

Masses now, as you will know, are online only …… go direct to the Parish Website www.southampton-city-catholics.org.uk

Weddings and Baptisms still on hold (except in an emergency); Funerals have the same restrictions as previously with only 30 people able to attend.

Christmas: as mentioned we have started planning what to do; obviously, it is not feasible in terms of clergy or time in the day to have Masses that would cater for everyone!! So we will have to be creative!! It is almost certain it will be streaming only. Watch this space as it will also be determined on when lockdown ends or the Government is ‘creative’!

Collections: thank you for your continued financial support. Without weekly collections the only way is ‘online’ or envelope through our letterbox!

Remember, remember…... everything is on the website: www.southampton-city-catholics.org.uk Vincent H

DIOCESAN DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING for an end to the Coronavirus Pandemic on Friday 27 November. A day of prayer to pray for all affected by COVID, those working with the sick and those seeking a vaccine ……. join in on the Diocesan website anytime during the day https://www.portsmouthcatholiccathedral.org.uk/live-mass.php We will be dedicating the Rosary, together with other prayers, after the 7pm Friday Mass for this intention. This will, as usual, be streamed. ADVENT ACCOMPANIED RETREAT Sunday 6 December – Friday 11 December You are invited to take part in an online Advent Retreat in which you can stay at home, but meet with participants both from our two parishes: Christchurch and City Centre, Southampton. There will be a Zoom meeting lasting about an hour for everybody at 4pm on Sunday 6 December. From Monday to Friday you will be given the opportunity to spend 30 minutes online each day with a prayer guide and on Friday 11 December between 7pm and 8pm everybody will meet online to review the week. You are also asked to commit to 30 minutes of private prayer each day. To register email Chris Bryden [email protected] JINGLING BELLS clothing for the homeless. “In response to your many kind enquiries, I am advised that Southampton City Mission are grateful for donations. For exact details, call 023 8055 0435, email [email protected] or see the website www.southamptoncitymission.co.uk We are proud of our efforts to assist those less fortunate than ourselves. My heartfelt thanks, Jenepher”. HOMELESS WELCOME BAGS …… thanks to everyone for the huge generosity seen last year. The idea is to provide a ‘welcome’ bag for everyone coming ‘off the streets’ this year: toothbrush & toothpaste; shower gel/shampoo … etc. etc... SEE THE FLYER ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE PARISH WEBSITE or ON CHURCH DOORS. Bring the full bags to the Presbytery or Parish Office (after phoning in!). HOT OFF THE PRESS: you may have noticed that the UK Government is planning to cut its spend 0.7% of income on foreign aid this year due to the financial crisis caused by Covid, and reduce it to 0.5%. The Government says that the £15bn overseas aid budget was being reviewed to meet the UK's priorities and to provide value for money. The 0.7% target, initially proposed by the United Nations in the 1970s, was first adopted in the UK by Tony Blair's Government although it was not actually reached until 2013. The pledge was enshrined into law by the coalition government in 2015. Our ‘option for the poor’ should oppose such a cut, despite the reasons for it (our own needs, expenditure and debt!). I will be writing to my MP I hope you do also. If you know the name of your MP you simply put their name followed by [email protected] (like this: [email protected] but don’t email me!!!). I’m not the MP but you get the idea!!!

BILL BURKE RIP “THANK YOU so much Father Vincent and Father Ansel for such a memorable funeral and to everyone who has helped to make Bill's funeral so lovely and what's more it is all online with a brilliant introduction and ending. Thank you to everyone who has offered their prayers, love, kindness and words of sympathy. We can't thank you enough for all the cards and beautiful flowers, particularly in the church, they all meant so much. We will keep you all in our prayers. Love Mary and Anne”.

CATHOLIC HOME CARE SEASONAL UPDATE

Each year we like to give our clients a Christmas gift from you. This year unwrapped presents can be left in the church porch, during the advertised times of private prayer, or delivered to the Parish Office or Presbytery after this lockdown until 11 December.

Alternatively, donations can be made Ref: Christmas Gifts via our bank account, or in an envelope through the office door and we will buy something for you! Suitable gifts include chocolates, biscuits, toiletries, socks, scarves & gloves, stationery and routine food-staples; our carers individually pick what best suits their clients.

Sadly our current financial situation is not healthy; COVID-19 has badly affected our costings. In addition, donations through monthly second collections have been difficult since the spring and I would like to invite you to donate either by Bank Transfer, or better still by a monthly Standing Order. Please contact me for help in setting this up. Donations can be Gift Aided so tax payers’ contributions can be increased by 25% without any further cost to yourselves!

New clients are always welcome! We help with all domestic tasks, laundry, shopping; and we befriend and offer a sitting service - the list expands depending on need. If you know of an elderly person who could benefit from a weekly visit, helping them stay in their own home for longer please let me know.

Thanking you in advance for all donations and support you give the Catholic Home Care.

All enquiries to: Anne Monaghan 023 8017 0498. Bank Details: Catholic Home Care: Sort Code 30-93-04 Account No. 00903338.

DOMINICAN (SWAY) ONLINE CARDS Our sisters have been working very hard during this last six months of lockdown building up our stocks for Christmas. Sr Lucy and Sr Catherine have built up a beautiful stock of original watercolours and calligraphy cards.

In this time of lockdown when you cannot go out to do normal Christmas shopping you may find something special for Christmas here, and be able to support our community in a very special way at the same by purchasing our cards! It is not always easy to find suitable Christian cards in our increasingly secular world. We hope we can fill a gap in this area: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Dominicards
