The Re-Igniting Our Faith Campaign, which our

diocese has undertaken, is being launched at St.

Mary’s at a time when restorations to the church

are needed. This campaign will give St. Mary’s

the opportunity to raise funds for the current

needs of our parish.

Each week in the bulletin we will highlight areas

of the restoration work to be done in the church

with the funds raised by the campaign.

When considering at what level God may be

calling us to participate, prayerful discernment is

suggested, as this is the way we always learn from

God’s call. Bishop Scharfenberger has suggested

that we consider a pledge of twice our annual

church contributions plus our Bishop’s Appeal

donation. This sacrificial pledge is meant to be

fulfilled over a five-year period.

Please watch for more detail about informational

meetings that will be held throughout August and

September.

Prayer of Re-Igniting Our Faith

God of untiring mercy, open our

hearts to hear your voice.

Send your living flame of love into

our hearts to overflow with

abundant generosity of spirit.

May the burning passion of your

love for all transfigure our lives, our families and

our parishes.

Re-ignite in us each day the joy

of spreading the Gospel.

May our living faith in your Real Presence shine in

our hearts so that we may bring it to whomever

you lead us each day.

We place our prayer in the heart of Mary,

under Her title of the Immaculate Conception,

Patroness of our nation and our Diocese,

through which we consecrate ourselves to your

Divine Mercy.

Amen.

Paint missing—stained glass needs to be re-leaded and re-painted.

The stained glass windows of St. Mary’s Church were originally used as memorial

windows. Completed in 1897 and originally costing parishioners from $100 to $600

each, these 24 beautiful windows include 11 saints and colorful artwork designed

by Meyer of Munich, Germany. The windows depict stories from the Bible, as well

as the seven sacraments, which are hallmarks of the Catholic Church.

Faith Formation

Dictatorship of Relativism

One of the first great revelations of God appears in Exodus when Moses

asks him his name. He says, “I am.” One of his first definitive statements

about himself is not only that he exists, but that he IS existence. The one

response that is dispelled by that revelation is a relativistic attitude

towards God. Relativism is this idea that you create and define your own

truths. Pope Benedict called this the dictatorship of relativism. It’s a

dictatorship because it enslaves us to our emotions and desires. Without

an objective moral standard to conform your life to, you won’t have any

reason to resist your urges...In the same way that God IS in spite of our

own preferences, Catholic Christianity, as God’s message to the world, is

also something that exists objectively. It is well defined and is reinforced

by a considerable amount of defining documentation. What Catholicism

ISN’T is whatever we say it is because we happen to be Catholic. You

and I don’t define what it is. We are to be conformed to it. Anything else

would be to put ourselves in the place of God. That’s the essential sin of

Adam and Eve. They wanted to setup on their own and become like

God and that’s what convinced them to eat of the fruit.
