A Message from Administration –

A Message from Administration –

June is here! A time to look forward, celebrate the moment and

look back. Looking forward is a chance for all of us to build on

what we have learned and explore exciting new possibilities.

Celebrating the moment – a step taken or a goal achieved – gives

us all a chance to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Looking back gives us a chance to review and reflect on what we

have learned. Please take some time to reflect with your child

during the month of June.

Looking forward, please consider becoming a member of our

School Council to help further along the growth and development

of our school programs and opportunities for all. Each fall, new

elections take place for all positions, and we will be looking for

nominations for our Council Executive positions at our fall

Curriculum Night.

Celebrating the moment - Our staff are continually learning and

growing together to engage our students in authentic learning

opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. As

partners in education, together we have supported many children

in helping to achieve their goals. As well, our WBPS staff has

been able to provide many varied and rich learning opportunities

for our students through the arts, athletics and academics this

school year.

Looking back, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the

parents in our community who drop in to talk with us about your

child’s growth and development and their education at WBPS. As

public school Principals, we are always here to listen. Feel free to

come by the office at anytime to talk about your concerns and

suggestions for improvement – or any questions you may have

about our school programs and supports available. We value

creativity, innovation and collaboration to create an engaged

school community. We truly look forward to our continued

journey together.

Grade 8 Graduation just over 2 weeks away!

Tuesday, June 16th, 2015 Thanks in advance to Ms. Rise Enokido who is organizing this year’s

Graduation Committee to ensure a wonderful night of celebration for our

graduating grade 8 students – at Crystal Fountain.

Volunteer Breakfast –

The staff and students of William Berczy Public School would like to thank the many volunteers for the

tremendous support we received again this year. From the parents who accompany classes on field trips,

read with our children, and assist us in the daily safe arrival program, to those who assist in the Library,

and on the School Council, to our monthly Pizza Team and to our Pasta team who also organizes grade 8

graduation – our Berczy volunteers together have continued the strong tradition of contributing to the

overall success of our school. Please accept our sincere thanks. It has been another successful year

thanks to all your support and involvement!

To express our appreciation of your ongoing support at William

Berczy P.S., we will be holding a volunteer breakfast on

Thursday, June 4th

, 2015.

If you have volunteered at William Berczy in the 2014-2015

school year, you should have already received an invitation –

and we look forward to seeing you there. Please note, if you

need to bring your child(ren) with you, there will be activities

for them in the gym while you have the opportunity to join us

for a light breakfast in the library.

DRESS CODE – with the warmer weather finally here, please be reminded of ensuring your

child(ren) comes to school dressed appropriately. No short-shorts are allowed. All shorts and

skirts should be mid-thigh length. No visible bra straps. No underwear showing. Please call us if

there are any concerns. As always, no baseball caps.

Report Cards and the last day of school - dismissal at 12:00 p.m.

Report Cards will go home with all students at the end of the day on Wednesday, June 24th

. Together as a staff, throughout the month of June, we will be working through

placing all of our students in their homeroom classes for next year. Your

child’s next year’s homeroom teacher name (TENTATIVE) will be written on

the Report Card to help ease the transition for all students over the summer

months.

All WBPS students will be dismissed at 12:00 PM on Thursday, June

25th

for the summer! Students will attend school during the morning of

June 25th

, only. Arrangements will be made by the board to ensure that

students who are normally bussed to and from school will receive

transportation at noon. Parents whose children attend after school child

care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in

schedule.

Track and Field News – All students in grades 4-8 had

a very enjoyable day of competition on Friday, May 22nd

during

our annual Berczy Track and Field Day. Congratulations to all

participants – and we would like to wish the many students

competing in the Area Track and Field day at Bill Crothers

SS on June 8th

all the best!

Our Spring Scholastic Book Fair raised $2000 for our Learning

Commons!

A big thank you to all the families who participated! The end of the year is fast approaching and it’s

time to start collecting any outstanding library books that may be kicking around the house or

classroom. All materials signed out of our library will now have a final due date of June 12th, 2015.

In the meantime our school’s library will remain a vital and vibrant

learning space until the final day of school. Our resources remain

available for use in the Learning Commons space, and partnering with

classrooms will continue.

Our Trip to Chapters!

On May 21st, 6 lucky Berczy Bears won the opportunity to visit Chapters/Indigo to spend the money

generated through our Chapters/Indigo evening organized by School Council. Students were supervised

by Ms. Lott and Ms. Taylor on an adventure out to our local Chapters where the students had a great

time selecting the books to purchase from all genres and for all grade levels to be placed in our Learning

Commons. Thanks winners!

It’s that time!

PLEASE return all library books!

The Photography Club at William Berczy – by Ms. Terzian

The PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB is a small group

of students from grade 6-8, dedicated to learning

about the art of photography. We generally meet

on a weekly basis and discuss aesthetics and

technique by looking at students' works. This

year, we have covered several topics in

photography, including lighting, composition,

and perspective. In March we were able to host a

photography contest, in which three students

were awarded top prize out of eighty-five

submissions!

Recently, the intermediate students of

the Photography Club were given the very special

opportunity to work in a photography lab and

darkroom at Unionville High School. Without any delay, we decided that we would make our own

pinhole cameras (or camera obscura) out of shoe boxes, capture some images and develop them

ourselves while in the darkroom. The students had loads of fun with the challenge of loading up their

'cameras' with darkroom paper in the pitch dark, and then taping them shut with only their hands to lead

the way. And then, it was off to capture those shots! (See how to make your own camera here:

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Make-A-Pinhole-

Camera/)

When we arrived at UHS, shoeboxes in hand, we were

greeted by the senior photography class, who kindly

mentored us and helped us with developing our pinhole

images every step of the way. The students learned about

photographic chemistry, how and why the images appear, the

process of developing the images with the chemistry, using a

dry rack, and how to manoeuvre oneself in the darkroom

(because that in itself can be hard to do!). We were also

treated with making photograms by using the photo lab

enlargers. The collaboration among all of the students

resulted in a highly successful and fulfilling trip.

As photography continues to rapidly evolve from the more patience involving film process, to the

'ready-to-wear' digital process, it was a rewarding experience for the students to be able to learn and to

get back to the fundamentals of raw 'hands-on' photography.

SUN SAFETY - Remember that in hot sunny weather, students must protect

themselves by wearing a hat and applying sunscreen before

exposure to the sun. Drinking water on very hot days is also

important, so parents are encouraged to send reusable water

bottles to school with their children. We have 2 bottle filling

stations in our school – ready for your command!

BIKE SAFETY – WEAR YOUR HELMET!

THANKS to the many WBPS parents who ride bikes with their

children to school, after school and on the weekends! It is so nice to

see families around our neighbourhood enjoying the outdoors while

riding their bikes!

Also fabulous to see some of our WBPS staff riding their bikes to

work! Have you spotted a teacher in the morning on their bike?

Please follow us on Twitter to see more highlights and learn about the

teaching and learning happening at our school!
