we look forward to welcoming drivers, riders and spectators, old andnew, to this brilliant event on the South Coast.

But it's not just our involvement that should be recognised. The commitment, hard work and enthusiasm put in by the Brighton and Hove Motor Club

ensures the event runs smoothly and safely. Every year they organise a specialevent and I'm sure you will join me in thanking them for their huge efforts.

It's that time of year again; the second Saturday in September, the day the VMCC Sprint Section makesits annual pilgrimage to the South Coast for the longest running speed event for both motorcycles andmotor cars - The Frosts National Brighton Speed Trials. We the VMCC Sprint Section would like to takethis opportunity to thank Brighton and Hove Motor Club for their invitation to organise the motorcycleentry and Frosts for their continued support of this prestigious event.

This year has been no easier than previous years when selecting machines and riders from the invitedentry, but I think we have been fair to all who applied and have a good cross section of motorcycles forthe Speed Trials and you the spectators. We have such machines as a 98 years young Triumph 4Hp,ridden by a local rider, Paul Gander, through to one of the latest Japanese motorcycles, a KawasakrZZR14OOcc, ridden by Mike Grainger. Now both Mike Grainger and his brother Fred take theirmotorcycling very seriously and I would think this year is no different from previous years, in that theyboth would have ridden up from Plymouth to compete here today and will then be riding back when theracing is over,

Talking of distances travelled to compete here at Brighton, we have the welcome return of ManfredRauscher from Austria who has travelled a long way by anybody's reckoning to go racing. Well, sorryManfred you have been outdone this year as we welcome Steve Robins from Brisbane in QueenslandAustralia with his Rob North BSA Triple Rocket 3, ridden by Mark Parrett. Mark won the Formula Classicevent at the 2011 Manx Grand Prix last year and so Steve decided to leave the bike here in the UK sothat they could defend their tille at this year's Manx GP. We hope they were successful. Steve took timeout to visit the Speed Trials last year and was so impressed he got in contact asking to enter hismachine. We hope their day Is productive and that they have a great day here at Brighton.

Some 40 years after his one and only visit to the Brighton Speed Trials we have a World Record Breakeramongst us, John Hobbs no less. John is here today not with his world famous Hobbit, but with hisnewly built Triumph Tiger 100, "Olympus", a lovely and well-crafted replica of his 1968 World Recordmachine, for both the Standing Start Quarter Mile and the Standing Start Kilometre set back in 1968 atRAF Elvington, may I add, at the grand old age of 211 John's first visit to the Speed Trials was on"Olympus 2", a twin engined machine on which John managed to smoke the rear tyre for the full Kilo, itwas demo run, but still very impressive. This time round John will be running in the Consistency class.

In the paddock and on the race track today you will see another record breaking machine from the 60'sand 70's, the Hillman Imp powered sidecar "Impulse", then ridden by Vic Phillips. Today, some 18 yearssince it last appeared at Brighton, it will be ridden by Andy Forward who has restored the machine, along with its owner Paul Standing. It will great to see trus machine back in action; it is my understand-ing that Vic Phillips may well be in attendance today as well as the original frame builder Micky Pearce.

We have a first here at Brighton, Talan Skeels-Plggins, a regular rider with the VMCC Sprint Section forthe past two years. Talan is the first paraplegic In the world to hold a full ACU Road Race licence. Talanis a rider with Revenge Racing, the world's first motorcycle race team where all the riders areparaplegics. On 15th August Talan, aiong with Bret Crossley and Russell Docker, took part in a threehour endurance race for solo motorcycles at the Assen TT Circuit against 40 other teams. This was thefirst time in history that a team of paraplegic motorcyclists competed In an endurance race against able-bodied racers. Talan does not do this for just himself, as he has set up a charity that teaches disabledmotorcyclists how to ride a motorcycle again. A true inspiration to us alii

Finally, it just leaves me to say thank you all, enjoy your day on the seafront and have a safe journeyhome with all your memories of the day. We look forward to seeing you all again here in 2013.

  • VINTAGE AND HISTORIC

As is a long standing tradition atBrighton, as well as the outrightclass winner, we have a race with-in a race. The VSCC Handicap. The eligible cars have handicaptimes set by the Vintage SportsCars Club who have detailedrecords of past performance of allentrants. The two litre Alta Norris of John Potts is another supercharged car thatcan be quick. Geofrey Taylor set up a class record driving an Alta at Brighton in1938 and must be a good bet for the VSCC Handicap.

The Vintage and Historic Classhas always had an interestingentry of sports and racing carsthat made motor racing historyduring the nineteen thirties and inthe post war scene.

Large capacity cars have dominat-ed the entry over recent years andoften provide the class winner.Mike Crehan with the CirrusSpecial powered by a 5 litre Buickengine will be quick over the shortquarter mile sprint course. However, the David Hawkins veryfast Riley TT Sprite with a powerfulsupercharged ERA engine mustbe clear favourite for an outrightwin. Rob Cobden in his methanolburning two stage superchargedtwin cam Riley will be very fast. Heis about due for a class win andcould provide a surprise win.

The fun of a Handicap is that all the drivers have a sporting chance and a surprisewin is always on the cards.
