Chair

The Economic Club of Chicago

I am honored to be installed as the new chair of The Economic Club of Chicago

in the same year as the Club’s 90th anniversary. The stability and success of the Club

for the past nine decades is a true testament to the power of great people and ideas.

When The Economic Club of Chicago was founded in 1927, its goal was to bring

Chicago area executives together with future leaders to discuss civic ideals.

Since then, the Club has cultivated meaningful conversations about the social,

political, and economic issues in our society. Today, during a time where civil discourse

is in short supply, our mission is even more essential as the Club provides a safe space

for the curious and conscientious to come together.

The ECC is unique in its ability to challenge and engage our membership purposefully.

Our programs encourage diverse opinions and unique perspectives amongst

an array of disciplines. To that end, we have been continually inspired by some of

the most influential leaders and innovators of our day.

It is an exhilarating time to serve as chair of The Economic Club of Chicago and

our extraordinary members fuel my enthusiasm for all that lies ahead.

President and CEO

The Economic Club of Chicago

T he Economic Club of Chicago’s membership is a curated composition of

business and civic leaders that reflects the diverse leadership of the city.

With over 2,000 members across 38 industries, the Club convenes thought

leaders with varying perspectives to consider the public responsibility inherent to

their roles in the city. This underscores the ECC mission to, “foster meaningful

connections among Chicago leaders to encourage dialogue on important economic

and social issues and to cultivate the next generation of civic leadership.”

A key pillar of our membership is this demonstrated commitment to civic engagement,

a trait that sets the Chicago business community apart. Additionally, two thirds of our

members are C-suite executives, representing the top leaders of their respective fields.

After five years serving as the Club’s president and chief executive officer, I can attest

to the vitality of our organization and our members’ consistent appeal for programs

that will challenge and educate. The Club itself could not function without the

contribution of its members, who donate their time to various committees. And perhaps

most significantly, our members continue to cultivate a community of thinkers and

innovators who will impart the Club’s vision to the next generation of Chicago leaders.

I n August of 2016, the Club moved to 33 n Dearborn Street, Suite 1700.

In this new space, the Club has the opportunity to host numerous members

for committee meetings, and will continue to explore new ways of utilizing

the space for the benefit of our members. The office move was made possible thanks

to the generous work of AmTrust Realty Corporation, Cushman & Wakefield,

Environmental System Design (esd), Forward Space, Galambos + Associates, Gensler,

Reed Construction, Sidley Austin llp and SpaceLogik llc.

“We can host all the luncheons and make all the announcements we want. But

at the end of the day, if our kids keep waking up in neighborhoods where they don’t

feel safe on their own front porches, if they’re still attending schools with

crumbling ceilings and ripped up textbooks, if there’s nowhere safe for them to go

when that afternoon bell rings, then nothing speaks louder than that. Nothing.”

“I try to encourage students to think early in their life what they can do to

make the country a better place; give back your time, your energy, your ideas,

because something will strike your fancy and something you can do will make

this country a slightly better place, and if everyone does that I think our country

can be a much better country than it has been.”

“As I see it, any solution to climate change should be about shaping the world’s

economic future. We have experienced several great economic transformations in

our history. The industrial revolution, the technology revolution, our modern era of

globalization. Now we are on the threshold of another revolution, the age of green

economics.”

“I am certainly pushing for innovation all the time. So I’m trying as hard as I can

to push people to try new and different things. Whenever you try something new

there’s a probability that it will succeed. It’s never certain. In fact it’s arguably

uncertain. So there has to be a culture where failure is fine provided that people

thought it through and have some good assessment of the risks ahead of time.”

T he Membership Committee consists of 75 members who serve on 10 sub-

committees, each one representing specific industries and occupations.

The subcommittees are responsible for reviewing proposals that members

submit for consideration. Their foremost objective is to fill each available club

membership with the best candidate possible. The entire Membership Committee

meets four times a year to elect new members. Since vacancies are not filled in

chronological order, it is not unusual for a very strong candidate to remain on

the waitlist for two years or more. Since its formation, the Club has worked to

attract a diverse membership by age, profession and background, with a particular

emphasis on identifying younger members so that the ideas and ideals of one

generation will be passed on to the next.
