A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER
CELEBRATING THE ACHIEVMENTS OF OUR 2009 HSC CANDIDATES
On Thursday 25 February the College celebrated the success of our Year 12 (2009) at the Higher
School Certificate Celebration Assembly. At the assembly, seventeen students from last year’s Year
12 and our two accelerants in Year 12/2010 were recognised for their achievement in being placed
on the 2009 HSC Merit list. To gain a position on this list a student has to achieve a Higher School
Certificate mark greater that 90% in any one subject.
Merit list students, Rhiannon Garrett,
Christopher Kalogeropolous, Ross
Kilpatrick, Dean Lubyckij, Anthony
Mamouzelos, Hayden McCarthy,
Michael Oetsch, Zoe Pritchard,
Megan Schulz, Laura Wales, James
Willard, Madeline Worthington and
Sheridan Worthington attended on
the day.
Due to prior commitments Laurice
Dela Cruz, Jordan Escobar, Akin
Goktepe, Eleanor Powter, Jennifer
Robinson and Nathan Tranby were
unable to attend the Celebration
Assembly.
Michael Oetsch, Dux of 2009, spoke to the assembly on strategies that he used
to survive the Higher School Certificate. He encouraged students to maintain a
balance in their lives, to undertake regular exercise, not to put too much
pressure on themselves and to look at their organisational skills. Michael also
spoke of his belief that by following pathways of passion, such as Fitness and
Exercise Science in his case, students would experience success whilst
maintaining a degree of balance and happiness in their lives.
On behalf of the College, I congratulate all our HSC high achievers.

WHAT MAKES A BROUGHTON GRADUATE
As I prepared my presentation for the Higher School Certificate Celebration Assembly, I had discussions with parents,
staff and students and reflected on my experiences over the past thirty years to gain a ‘snap shot’ of the characteristics
that make the graduates of Broughton successful and distinctive. Below is a list of characteristics of a Broughton
graduate developed from these conversations:
Graduates of Broughton Anglican College should:
* be Christ focused and willing to share their love of Christ
* recognise and use the gifts and talents that God has given them and take opportunities to use them
* respect and be willing to serve others
* be ready to undertake further study or enter the workforce
* be academically focused and challenged
* be academically successful
* be technologically confident
* be confident to take initiative
* be willing to take on leadership roles
* be life-long learners
* always seek to improve their knowledge and skills
I would value feedback from parents on this list and other characteristics you feel I should add. Please send your
feedback to [email protected]
JUNIOR SCHOOL CHAPLAIN
It is with sadness that I have accepted the resignation of Mr Mathew Turnbull from his position of Junior School
Chaplain. Mr Turnbull has been in the role for the past two years and has resigned due to family reasons. The College
thanks him for his work in the Junior School in Term Services, Chapels, Christian Studies classes, sport and many other
areas. The College was particularly thankful for the generosity of Mr Turnbull, his wife Bonnie and his children for the
sacrifices made in their family life that allowed him to drive the College bus in Semester Two last year.
The College is advertising for a replacement for Mr Turnbull. The Junior Chaplain role is funded under the Federal
Government Chaplaincy Grant which continues until April next year. The role would suit a person with a passion for
Children’s Ministry and a desire to engage parents and families. It would also suit a person in a part- time ministry
position in a church or other Christian agency or someone who really wants to do Christian work in schools. The JS
Chaplain role description and application form is on our website and is also available from the Main Admin Office. The
closing date for applications is 5 March 2010.
WELCOME MRS HARRIS
On Monday 1 March the College will welcome Mrs Merrilyn Harris as our new Science Laboratory Assistant. Mrs. Harris
has an Associate Degree in Applied Science (Amenity Horticulture) and extensive experience in that field. We are
pleased that God has called her to work at Broughton.
The College would like to thank Mr Aaron Morellini (Year 12/2008), who has worked in the Science Laboratory Assistant
role since the start of the year. Aaron is commended on the outstanding job he has done and we wish him our best as
he returns to university next week.

JUNIOR SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Congratulations to the Junior School for the success of their Swimming Carnival held on Tuesday. This was well
organised and had a family atmosphere. A number of parents made positive comments on the organisation and the
change of venue. I thank all of our parents who assisted the staff in making this such a success.
BACCHAT UPDATE
There has been a delay in finalising the 2009 BACCHAT which is presently with the printer. Thank you for your patience

BROUGHTON’S NEWEST MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY – INTRODUCING OUR PICASSO COW!
The Junior School has been selected to participate in the Picasso Cows Health and Nutrition Project. We received our
very own life-size cow this week. Year 4 will be researching the Dairy Industry in the local area, both past and present,
and design and paint our cow. There will be a naming competition and lots of photo opportunities before our cow
competes against other schools in the area. Mrs Schulz is overseeing the project.
We would like to thank the Property
Staff for the safe pick up and delivery
of our cow. We hear it was very well
behaved and left no mess at all in
their truck. We look forward to
hearing more about our cow’s
adventures over the coming months.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL RIBBONS
All top three place getters, across each event, will be receiving their swimming ribbons at the Primary Assembly on
Tuesday 9 March.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
What a wonderful day for a swimming carnival. We were blessed with beautiful weather and a wonderful venue. The
day ran extremely smoothly, thanks largely to the enormous efforts of Mr Brett Gillies who coordinated the day. The
efforts of all of the staff, and the many fabulous parents, who helped on the day to ensure such a successful event were
greatly appreciated. The many positive comments we received by parents about the day, and the overwhelming
consensus that the venue was highly appropriate for our Junior School, has confirmed that we will return to Camden
again next year. Congratulations to all of our students who were so well behaved and swam so well. We look forward
to the NASSA Swimming Carnival which will be Tuesday 2 March.
IPSSO SPORT RESULTS
Our IPPSO teams performed very well this week. Well done to all players.

ADVANCED CONCERT BAND & CAMPBELLTOWN ARTS CENTRE HERITAGE WEEK FILM PROJECT
Twenty members of the Advanced Concert Band have a wonderful opportunity to participate in a
Film Project with artist Angelica Mesiti (winner of the 2009 Blake Prize) as part of the Campbelltown
Arts Centre project for 2010 Heritage Week.
This will involve producing a short film inspired by this year's Heritage Week theme 'The Making Of
Our Nation', which will be launched at the Campbelltown Arts Centre's annual Heritage Week
Forum on Thursday 15 April 2010 at 7pm. Angelica has chosen to centre her film on the built
heritage of Campbelltown from around the time of its foundation by Governor Macquarie. The
performance by members of our band will be a significant component of the film, and will reflect a
new generation of leadership, strength of character, and talent seen
amongst our youth.
The band will work closely with the film-making crew through a series of
performance development exercises that will occur both at the College, and
off-site at Heritage Park, Glen Alpine.
ADVANCED CONCERT BAND AT THE CAMDEN SHOW
The full forty five member Advanced Concert Band will be performing from 2.30-
3.00pm at the NAB School & Entertainment Pavilion at the Camden Show on

child’s progress, the Secondary Parent Teacher Evenings will be held in March. The first of these, for Year 12, will take
place next Wednesday 3 March. Letters and Booking Sheets have already been distributed to students and Year 12
should be well into the process of making appointments for their parents.

Broughton in a number of grades. On Wednesday 17 March Parent Teacher Interviews will be held for students in Years
7-11 whose surnames begin with A-L. On Monday 29 March Parent Teacher Interviews will be held for students in Years
7-11 whose surnames begin with M-Z. Information and Booking Sheets will be distributed to students next week.

After the excellent participation and competitive results in the pool at our Swimming Carnival, we look forward to our
NASSA Swim Team representing us on Wednesday night. It is always an exciting evening and all members of our
Broughton community are invited to the State Sports Centre at Homebush commencing at 6pm. Look for the
Broughton banner and join us in supporting our NASSA swim team for 2010.
WRITER OF THE WEEK
Our Writer of the Week is Mark Little of Year 8 for his imaginative narrative based on a small collection of everyday
objects.
‘The midget who lived on 32nd Street was no taller than a thumb. His home, a plastic bag, gave him security from the
monsters (dogs) that roamed the park. All he ever wanted in life was to see the clouds and sky, way up above. He had
tried tirelessly his entire life to reach the sun, with no success. He had climbed trees, scaled the tallest towers, all to no
avail. His ideas were getting worse and each one so far was a flop…
At dusk he began gathering rubbish from the park, to make a tower. The glue stick, a stapler and a huge playdoh bear
made the base of his structure. It was a huge effort manoeuvring objects twice, three or four times his size. He worked
all night, and the whole next day. Paper bags, soft drink cans and old shoes were all part of the mammoth structure. He
slept all night, ready to scale his mountain tomorrow morning…’

The Broughton Streamwatch Team has begun testing the Nepean River again for 2010. Our Streamwatch coordinator
has visited Broughton and has checked the sites for safety and made sure that we are trained and equipped. Work on
the weir at Douglas Park has resulted in some muddiness (turbidity) of the water but the workers have installed baffles
to keep this to a minimum. A fish ladder is being installed on the Douglas Park side to allow fish to travel up and down
through the weir easily.
Those of you who would like to know more about the health of our waterways and how we measure it may be
interested in training workshops being held by the Georges River Combined Councils Committee. They are running one
estuary and one freshwater training day. Estuarine environments are relevant to Higher School Certificate Biology and
students studying Biology would be welcome to attend the course.
