Headmaster
A message from
Diane Alford,
Chair of the
Board of Gover-
nors
Dear Members of the All Souls St Gabriels School Community,
We are writing to share the news that Mr Darren Fleming has advised the Chair of the Board of Governors of his decision to conclude his tenure at All Souls St Gabriels School. Darren will commence leave from the end of Term 3 and proceed to his retirement from headship effective from the end of Term 4. The Board is certain that the transition to a new Headmaster will be well managed. The school will be supported during this transition period by our exper-ienced Deputy Headmaster who will take on the Acting Headmaster role in Term 4 along with support from the Business Manager and the Sen-ior Leadership team together with the whole school staff.
The Board of Governors recognise Darren’s significant dedication and commitment to All Souls St Gabriels School since he joined the School in 2016. We are grateful to have benefitted from Darren’s calm resolve throughout the challenges of the Coronavirus Pandemic. The leadership both comforted and safeguarded the School from extra-ordinary challenges the year pre-sented to our staff, students and families. Despite the challenges of 2020; Darren and his team have still been able to commence work on the Design and Technology pre-cinct. This resource will create a new landmark for the School with a
modern learning environment for our students.
Darren will leave All Souls St Gabriels School in a strong position. The Board of Governors will now begin the process to appoint a new Headmaster. The Board of Governors will engage the services of a specialist recruit-ment consultant for the educa-tion sector to assist with the as-sessment of candidates from a widespread campaign. We will keep the School community in-formed of progress.
On behalf of the Board of Governors, and our School community, may I extend our sincere appreciation to Darren for his contribution and commit-ment to All Souls St Gabriels School and Wendy, who has also been a great supporter both of Darren and the School and wish them the best for their move to Adelaide. We look forward to cel-ebrating his pending retirement from Headship more formally in the near future.
Yours sincerely
Diane Alford
Chair of the Board of Governors

End Of Term Well, we made it to the end of the Term and what a jam-packed Term it has been. We have had the Centenary Celebrations, a nod to the past, and the structural steel and roofing going up for the Design and Tech-nology project, a nod to the fu-ture. We have had success in the classroom, on the sporting field, in the yards, at shows and in the Arts. This is a sign of a vibrant school. I am still conducting enrolment interviews for students who wish to join us this year as well as interviews for 2022. If you or your friends are looking for places in 2022 and have not yet contacted Jon Teichmann, then I would encourage you to start the process as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Vale A message from Bishop Keith and Archbishop Philip: Many of you with long con-nections in the Diocese, will be saddened to learn that Mother Eunice of the Society of the Sa-cred Advent (SSA) has died. The SSA was a large part of the histo-ry of this Diocese, especially in relation to the education of girls and young women. In 1965 Mother Eunice joined the SSA making her profession in Au-gust 1967. The Sisters’ Schools of St Catharine’s in Warwick and St Anne’s in Townsville were home to Mother Eunice before she re-turned to Community House at Albion and St Margaret’s Angli-can Girls School at the end of 1978. She led the SSA for 35 years and was in the 56th year of her profession. Her funeral will be held in Brisbane at St John’s Cathedral on Thursday 24th June 2021 at 10 am. Please pray for all those who mourn, as we also give thanks for the work of the Society of the Sacred Advent in North Queensland.

Yippee, we made it! Recent energies of our students, teaching staff and non-teaching staff have been focussed on finishing this term well. I am sure this edition of our newslet-ter will include long lists of our recent successes in the class-room, in the studio, on the field, in the yards, on the stage and in the residences. Well done to all. Year 10 into Senior Studies It was great to meet with so many families on Monday night at the Year 10 into Senior Subject Information Night. It was a good opportunity to discuss the new senior system and for families to speak with senior teachers about the new senior subjects. I wish to remind all families of students in Year 10 that a com-pleted 2021 Yr10 into Senior ASSG Subject Choice Form needs to be returned to the school by the due date – 8.00am Wednes-day 21 July (Term 3 day two for students). Completed forms can be either delivered in person to Student Services, or scan and email the completed document to Flo King: [email protected]
The information gathered by the school on the document is very important as it allows the School Senior Leadership Team to gauge the viability of some subjects in the senior curriculum and to continue to plan for Term 4’s timetable and staffing requirements. Please note that according to the indication by Year 10 students in the first round of subject sel-ection, some classes (especially the practical subjects) will fill VERY quickly. Priority will be giv-en to students who returned their Subject Selection Forms on time and those who showed good work habits (application to class and homework, safe work practices in practical classes, etc) during their study of the subject area in Year 10. May I also take this opportunity to remind you that if you need to get additional information re-garding subjects or courses for senior, please feel free to phone and speak with the relevant Head of Department, a member of the School Careers Guidance Team, or myself. Exam Blocks The list of exam block dates is reprinted in this edition of the newsletter. The items to com-plete in the Year 12 block in Week 4 next Term, will be published as early as possible in the Term. I do not envisage many exams in this block, so the schedule will be mainly based around the middle and end of the week. Please note the remaining block dates as families plan for travel at the end of terms. ‘Family trav-el plans’ is not an acceptable rea-son (according to the Queens-land Curriculum and Assessment Authority) for students to sit ex-ams at a different time to the rest of their cohort.

All the best to the teams representing our school at events during these holidays – and I wish everyone a restful and recharging time with family and friends.

QTAC
The Senior students have been identifying their potential path-ways after they finish school. Those students planning on a university pathway have been examining how to apply for uni-versity via QTAC as well as the potential scholarships which can assist with the costs associated with leaving home to study at tertiary level. QTAC (Qld Tertiary Admissions Centre) applications open in August, during Term 3. Students are encouraged to research the Course Search tab on the QTAC website to identify relevant pre-requisites as well as inform-ation about the ATAR results that were required to be offered a place in specific university cours-es from 2020. Students exploring a non-university pathway are encouraged to have their Re-sume up to date and to ap-proach potential referees.
Farewell
I have been fortunate to have been offered a new position as Dean of St Ann’s College, North Adelaide from the middle of July. As such, this is my final article for the Phoenix Rising. I would like to extend my thanks to the All Souls St Gabriels School commu-nity for their part in making me welcome at this School. I com-menced in Junior School as a classroom teacher and I have been fortunate to secure other roles throughout my tenure which have enabled me to inter-act with a wide range of second-ary school students.
There have been many memories throughout the past five and a half years which go beyond just teaching in a classroom. I have been privi-leged to work with the very tal-ented Arts department and par-ticularly enjoyed “The Wiz” and preparing for “Annie” which was Covid-cancelled, unfortunately. The passion of our community during Inter-School events, which started at my first Inter-School twilight swimming carnival, will remain a highlight.
I have been fortunate to work with some very passionate and dedicated people throughout this journey and I particularly thank members of the Pastoral Care Team, the Senior Leader-ship Team, Flo and Glenda for their ongoing support, collegiality and utmost dedication to ensur-ing that the needs of the stu-dents remain forecast in their ac-tions. To the wider School com-munity, thank you for sharing your part of Australia with me. Whilst I came from a rural back-ground, it has been totally differ-ent to find out about this wider area and I have enjoyed travel-ling to many varied places throughout Northern Queens-land.
I leave with full confidence in the skills of my replacement and I know that the role of Dean of Students is in good hands.

Holidays It is time to renew and refresh (or go mustering or fencing – depending on your family circum-stances). Taking time to switch off from school is important but, for many of our students, go-ing home is a huge change from the daily rou-tine of boarding. eSafety It is important that families are aware of the need for eSafety. The School engages an external provider, Gaggle, to monitor student emails and internet searches, flagging any concerns about inappropriate use or issues of concerns and contacting the Deputy Headmaster, Dean of School and Dean of Students to alert them about these concerns. We also have additional filtering on the School system to protect our students as much as possible. However, in this age of smartphones, students are able to use their own data without the filters that have been imposed by the school.
Parents should also be aware of the need for eSafety with their children. The eSafety Commissioner provides resources to assist families, providing information about the key online safety issues for young people as well as including a range of tips and advice on what to do if things go wrong. They also list a range of important services that can offer extra support.
https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/online-safety-book
The eSafety Commissioner also provides a range of free webinars for parents which explore the latest research and can help parents learn how to develop the skills to be safer online.
https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/webinars
In addition, there are resources available on specific topics to assist young people including cyberbullying, how to protect your digital reputation, online gaming, helping others, mental health, online abuse, privacy and security, sending nudes, understanding consent, unwanted contact and vio-lence.

Chaplaincy Team Darren Fleming Over the last couple of weeks we have had two major services which have great significance for us as a School. St Barnabas Apostle & Martyr During Headmaster’s Assembly we talked about Barnabas and his travels with Paul spreading the good news. On Friday 11 June our service reflected on the life and contribution of Barnabas to the church. As the Brother-hood of St Barnabas started All Souls School it is important for us to acknowledge the connec-tion with our past and church history. Coming of the Light Coming of the Light refers to the arrival of Christianity into the Torres Strait. The commemora-tion falls during the School holi-days so with the Bishop’s permis-sion, we moved the celebrations forward so we could celebrate the important 150 year mile-stone. The service was conducted by Bishop Keith with the students from the Torres Strait assisting. The students undertook all the usual serving roles as well as readings and prayers. The Lords prayer was read in both English and Language and some of the service was in Language. I was proud of the students and their commitment and dedication to learn all the roles in a small amount of time. It was lovely to see them be confident enough to participate and give the rest of us a glimpse of what life is like in a part of Australia we know little about. Organist Our Coming of the Light service was the last service for our organist Mrs Fleming who is also the organist at St Paul’s Anglican Church in Charters Towers. Mrs Fleming has also co-ordinated the Chapel team on a Tuesday after school to prepare the chapel each week for services. We thank Mrs Fleming for her contribution to the spiritual life of the school.

Almighty and ever living God, we are taught to pray and to give thanks for all people: we ask you in your mercy to receive our prayers which we offer to your divine majesty. We pray that you will lead the nations of the world in the ways of righteousness and peace and guide their rulers in wisdom and justice for the good of all. Bless especially your servant Elizabeth our Queen, her representatives and ministers, her parliaments, and all who exercise authority in this land. We pray for those in government that they will make wise and compassionate decisions on issues that affect all Australians no matter what their religious beliefs or cultural background. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Lord, we ask you to inspire the Church with the spirit of truth, unity and grant that all who con-fess your holy name may agree in the truth of your holy word and live in unity and Godly love. Give grace, heavenly Father, to all bishops and other priests and deacons. We pray for Bishop Keith and Fr Kenneth, that, by their life and example, they may set forth your true, life-giving word, and rightly and duly administer your holy sacraments. And to all your people give your heavenly grace, and especially to this the students and staff of All Souls St Gabriels School here present, that they may receive your word with meek hearts and due reverence and serve you in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer
We ask you of your goodness, Lord, to comfort and sustain all who in this life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. We also bless your holy name for all your servants who have died in the faith of Christ. Give us grace to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of your heavenly kingdom. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Lord, we celebrate the Coming of the Light to the Torres Strait, 150 years ago on the first of July this year and we ask you to watch over all our Torres Strait community. Bless them as they go about their daily lives with the understanding that their young people are conducting themselves with pride and dignity whilst gaining an education in Charters Towers. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Vale
We pray for the family and
friends of Old Boy Keith Hughes
(1949 to 1952) who passed away
on Monday 7 June, aged 86. Keith
graduated from the University of
Queensland in Veterinary Sci-
ence, and after further study to

What a way to finish a massive term! Inter-House Athletics has come and gone again for another year. Well done to all our competitors who competed to the best of their abilities and showed great sportsmanship. I would like to say a big thank you to the grounds staff who put in a lot of time and effort into the preparation and set-up of the carnival and thank you to all the staff that help run the events. We now look forward to next Term to the Inter-School Athletics carnival which will be held in week 3 on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th of August.

How Time Flies
This semester has been filled with lots of engaging learning, and high quality extra-curricular activi-ties. It is uplifting to hear the stu-dents talk about how they learn and not just what they learn. Fo-cusing on learning skills and using a variety of strategies to find and use information, provides oppor-tunities for our students to con-solidate and build on their achievements as strong, active learners.
When reflecting on the events of Term 2, it is no wonder our students (and staff) are a little exhausted and ready for the semester break. The following are just a few of the many academic, extra-curricular and community events that have kept us all very busy.
ANZAC Day;
Two Cross Country events;
Inter-House Athletics Carni-val;
Junior School Support Group Mother’s Day Stall;
NAPLAN and the Popcorn, Pizza and Popper party;
Year 4s excursion to Billabong Sanctuary;
Year 3’s excursion to Rowes Sustainability Centre and the Townsville Museum;
National Simultaneous Storytime - a whole School reading event and the opportunity to read with a ‘real’ astronaut on the International Space Station;
First Light Entertainment Circus Skill Workshops;
Athletic Skills development with Leslye Muller;
Readers Cup;
Under 8’s Day;
Fiona Quinn—Artist in Residence workshop;
Inter-School sports;
Charters Towers and North Queensland trials;
NRL State of Origin free dress day;

Class performances at the Junior School Assemblies.
Throughout all these (and many more) occasions, we have continued to reinforce what it means to be an All Souls St Gabriels School student – someone who is a safe, respectful learner and following the ASSG code.
Inter-House Athletics
At ASSG we value ‘striving for our personal best’, and the Athletics Carnival is one of the many events in our School calendar where we recognise students for their out-standing athletic endeavour and great sportsmanship. It was great to see the team spirit shown by students from all Houses during the Junior School Inter-House Athletics Carnival.
Thank you Mrs Nicholls for your effort in preparing our students for the day’s program of events. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Grounds and Maintenance staff for preparing the ovals for the track and field events. Thanks to the Junior School staff for their energy, enthusiasm and assistance through-out the carnival. A special mention and thanks must also go to Mrs Jenni Hare and the Secondary students who assisted the Junior School staff with the running of the events. The day was a great success. Congrat-ulations Feetham and Becket House and the Age Champions and Runners up.
We wish our athletes all the very best for their events at the 2021 Primary Inter-School Athletics Carnival on Friday, 13 August.
Under 8’s Day
“Children Celebrating Outdoor Play”
Great weather made for another sensational Under 8’s Day. The Year 6 students and Year 4 and 5 Student Representatives did a magnificent job of hosting a morning packed full of activities designed to engage the youngest members of our All Souls St Gabriels School community. It was lovely to see so many families from the Charters Towers community join in with All Souls St Gabriels School students in a variety of fun activities.
Thank you to our Pre-prep educators and everyone involved in creating a special morning of develop-mentally appropriate activities for the young
children in our community.
Readers Cup
On Thursday, 17 June, Grace Turner, Matilda Hare, Bohdi Herring and Clayne Musk, travelled to Townsville with Mrs Dickson and Mrs Turner, to compete against other regional primary school students for the prestigious Readers Cup. It was an invaluable experience for the students, and we are very proud of how our team represented All Souls St Gabriels School. Thank you Mrs Dickson and Mrs Turner for the encouragement and support you gave our team.
It is always great to see students enthusiastic and keen to read, as reading has so many positive outcomes which are critical to academic success.
Happy Holidays
I would like to conclude this Term by acknowledging the staff, par-ents, family members and the wider community who are com-mitted to ensuring the best edu-cational, spiritual, emotional and physical well-being of our stu-dents. Hopefully everyone will have the opportunity to rest, or at least enjoy a slower pace over the next few weeks. We have lots planned for next Term, including the Inter-School Athletics Carni-val, the Charters Towers Show, Eisteddfod and the Year 6 trip to Canberra.
I look forward to seeing every-one’s rested and smiling faces on Tuesday 20 July.
Enjoy a happy, healthy and safe holiday

From the Dorm By the time this edition of our newsletter goes to print, you will be scattered across the state, enjoying your holidays. The three weeks since our last Phoenix have been loaded with activities, sport, school and all things boarding! The Touch Football season ended last Friday the 18th, with a fantastic finals night. Congratulations everyone, it was a great night despite the cold. Finally, we ended the Term with our Inter-House Athletics Carnival on Monday and Tuesday of week 10. Everyone had a blast in true House competition and as al-ways, it was great to witness the spirit of Souls sportsmanship. Well done everyone on another successful event, without the help of all our staff, friends and family who pitch in and make it possible, the days would not be as good as they are. Our quali-fying kids will now move forward with training, as they prepare for the Inter-School Athletics Carnival next Term. (Refer to the sport section of this newsletter for all re-sults). We just wanted to say what a great a job Shaye has done this term as our Recrea-tions Officer, filling each weekend with fun and interesting adventures. The board-ing kids have thoroughly enjoyed everything on offer and it’s great to see device-free time spent building relationships with friends and peers. Last weekend saw our Drone Club kick off with Mr Gibson offering his time to teach our kids all the tactical skills required to operate a drone. We look forward to continuing this new club next Term. We also enjoyed a fantastic evening of Beach Volleyball, Snooker, Darts, Indoor Cricket and Soccer last weekend, at the Indoor Sports Centre in town. Jake and Da-vid cooked up a great barbecue while the kids were in charge of the music, playing some awesome tunes. It was a successful night and one that the kids would love to see happen again. Thanks everyone for a great Term 2. Safe travels and have a well-deserved rest. See you all next Term!

Alban highlights: Thanks girls for another great Term. I’m very proud of everyone’s efforts - it was a full-on 10 weeks but we made it! Our Year 11 and 12 senior girls are getting excited with preparations for the upcoming Combined Schools Formal in July. Well done Tamzin Finger, on being selected for the NQ Cross Country Trials. It was great to see Alban represented! Good luck to our Alban House Cap-tain, Jasmine Elliott, who will be travelling to Brisbane in the first week of the School holidays, to join her fellow netballers in the QISSN Confraternity competition. All the best girls, can’t wait to hear about all your adventures next term.
PAGE 12 ISSUE NO 8/2021 25 JUNE 2021
Becket highlights: Congratulations to all the Becket girls - it’s been a long Term with all your assessments done and dust-ed and a well-earned break to come. Kyzearne Bulsey and Erin Wil-kinson represented Charters Tow-ers recently at the NQ Cross Coun-try Trials. Well done girls, we’re very proud of you. The girls all enjoyed a mid-week break with all pens down for the State of Origin night, dressing in our preferred colours. The girls were able to order pizzas and fin-ishing off the night with waffle cone ice-creams. A great night was had by all, despite the outcome!
Well done Katie Corrigan for her great results in the recent Gold City Campdraft. Below is Katie re-ceiving her award for Highest Cut-Out score in the Novice Rider divi-sion.
Good luck to Shakiah Stafford as she embarks on her first QISSN competition. Shakiah and our Firsts Netball girls are participating in the Confraternity Netball carni-val in Brisbane during the first week of the School holidays. Have a great break, enjoy time with family and friends, and I’ll see you all next Term.
Chad highlights: Well we’ve made it through a very hectic Term. To say I’m very proud of the Chad girls is an understatement. To live with 39 other girls is a huge feat in itself, let alone apply themselves to many academic and sporting activities as well. The girls have been very supportive of me in my first Term as Senior Resident and I’d like to thank them all dearly.
We are very proud of all our girls who competed at the re-cent NQ Cross Country trials in Townsville. Two Chad Dormi-tory girls are heading to Ips-wich on the last weekend of the School holidays to com-pete in the Queensland tri-als. A huge congratulations to Piper Godfrey and Jade Cow-an! In the first weekend of the hol-idays, Georgie Jonsson, Bree Sexton and Piper Godfrey are heading to QISSN and we wish them the best of luck. We can’t wait to hear all about it when you return next Term.

Ramsay highlights: As our only NSW supporter, David Gaiden was super stoked with the first game result of State of Origin. The rest of the Dormitory were very happy for David. Tristan Lathwell and Mickey Luke made NQ Rugby Union. Congratu-lations boys. We’re very proud of your achievements – all the best! The Ramsay Green House is com-ing along. Small steps but it's get-ting there. If anyone would like to donate any pots or plants please feel free to bring some at the start of next Term. Good luck to all my seniors: Kody Boalar, Lachy Lathwell, Roland Geesu, Darby Butler & Alan Tama-duk who are participating in the Confraternity Carnival in Brisbane during the first week of the holi-days.
Have a great holiday boys and we’ll see you back next Term, rested and ready to tackle Term 3.

Feetham highlights: I would like to thank the boys in Feetham for what has been a very busy Term. Athletics is done and dusted and I know the Feetham boys are have done a great job rep-resenting us yet again. Well done boys! The boys loved the Indoor Sport Centre outing last weekend. Turns out Jack Wharton is a pool shark and Norman Prior-Bounghi can’t bat. The barbeque dinner cooked on the night was a big hit and the boys where stoked with how good the cook was! I know all the boys are keen to get home for a few weeks off and some chill-out time. We have a few boys that will have to wait an extra week, as they are heading off to Confro in Brisbane for Football. I would like to wish Ethan Cowan, Norman Prior-Bounghi, James Sharp-Callaghan, Ri-ley Easton and Jyren Whap, all the best. It has started to get very cold here in Charters Towers and some of the boys need some new jackets. It would be greatly appreciated if you would check that your boys have warm clothing to return next Term. I hope everyone enjoys their holi-days and have safe travels.
Page highlights: A big congratulations to Marky Gibbo who attended the NQ AFL Football trials in Mackay and whilst there Marky was se-lected to play for the NQ AFL School team. Well done mate. Another congratulations goes out to Ned Elliott who made the NQ Under 19s Cross Country team. Unfortunately Ned can not attend the State Champion-ship due to injury. A massive 'well done' to our Page 1st Footy players Kevin Mutton, Ned Elliott and Zia Hop-kins who played an unbelieva-ble match against Columba on our Centenary weekend. It was a brilliant win by the team and having the whole school com-munity watching on made it even better. Again a shout out to Luke Keough who played in our Un-der 15 team against Columba on the same night and came away with a brilliant win. What a great match for Luke to be part of. I am sure that I can speak for all the Page boys and families when I wish all our students a massive 'Good luck' for the Con-fraternity football and netball in Brisbane during the holidays. Do us proud, and enjoy. Could I please ask that every-one checks uniforms and shoes are right for Term 3. On behalf of all the Page Residential Staff, we say thank you for this op-portunity. I will sign off with a very happy holiday goodbye from Page Resi-dence.
