Happy New Year!!!!! Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. Want to thank everyone who attended the BSC holiday party in December. The appetizers and desserts contributed by the members were delicious.

Thanks Christopher Pukalski for arranging the chicken and sides. And thanks LuAnn Snyder for all the beautiful decorations. It was a great night. Had a lovely Christmas Eve with my sister’s family and Christmas Day with my brother’s family. A four (4) year old niece received a Frozen Karaoke machine as a present so that set the tone (and I mean a loud tone) for dinner at my sister’s. See her photo below.

Congratulations to those who ran for office at the December meeting and were elected. I appreciate being re-elected as President for a second term. This first year seems to have just flown by. Of course, despite it being another year gone by, I am not another year older. I refuse to grow older. If you ask me, I am still the same 30 year old I was when I joined the club oh so many years ago. Things have changed in the past 20 years. The one thing that has stayed the same is the wonderful friends that I have made in the club. I look forward to another 20 years (and more) of those friendships - old and new.

Enough with emotional babbling, our ski season is almost started. Our first trip leaves for Banff on January 11. You should keep an eye out for the BSC constant contacts and last-minute opportunities to sign up for trips. There may be openings if someone’s schedule changes and can no longer go on a trip. If that happens, an email will be sent that lets you know which trip has an opening and whether or not a single male or female is needed, or sometimes it is more than one person that drops off a trip. So, even if you are not already signed up for a trip, there may still be an opportunity to join the BSC this year on one of its fabulous ski trips. If you have questions, please contact Dave Karczmarek, Trips Director.

I understand that this ski season will be a rarity in that no trips are out for Superbowl Sunday. Usually, at least one BSC trip is scheduled for that day. Leaders usually arrange a party on the trip so that everyone can watch the game together. This year everyone can gather at home to watch the Super Bowl and perhaps the Ravens!!!!! Can’t say that I am a football fan but go team go. Feel like Dr. Seuss with that comment.

We’ve a great program for January. LuAnn has arranged a speaker from Wounded Warrior Patrol. The Patrol arranges ski trips for Veterans’ with a service disability. As always the BSC likes to give back to the community by supporting ski related charities such as WWP and the sports program at Maryland School for the Blind. In the past, we have also supported Ski4Life, a ski and snowboard marathon sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For those interested in some non-ski charity involvement, I will be leading a group of ten (10) in March/April at the Maryland Zoo picking up trash for two hours in and around Druid Park.

As always, still looking for volunteers. Specifically, we have a need at the moment for a Chairperson to head the Marketing Committee and committee members. This is a new committee that we have established to help promote the club and grow our membership. And, as always, we need members of the non-ski activities to help plan and lead a social activity and invite their BSC friends to join them. This includes a potential Bull and Oyster Roast!!!!

Mid-evening, Dave Karczmarek made announcements about BSC ski trips

Approximately 100 BSC members and friends gathered on the evening of December 11 to cele-brate the holiday season. Socializing was the theme of the evening as everyone enjoyed fried chicken and salads. Thank you to everyone who brought delicious appetizers and desserts. We had an assortment of chips & salsa, meatballs, sausage, shrimp, nuts, cakes and cookies.

Current BSC President, Mary Rose Cook, thanked everyone for their Club membership and wished everyone happy holidays and a healthy, safe ski season. Four past presidents attended the event: Joe Herbert, Mary Jo Tarallo, Wes Miller and Mike Jones. Incidentally, Joe is still serving as Recording Secretary for the Club and as 2020 Ski Trip Leader to Hakuba, Japan.

Dave Karczmarek, Trips Director, gave a ski trips update on current openings, and encouraged members to sign up soon. Dave also introduced Rusty Buchanan, who will be training for Special Olympics ski racing at Whitetail. Next, LuAnn Snyder was introduced as our Meeting Programs Di-rector, who coordinated the November Winter Expo. At that Expo, the Baltimore Ski Club raised $1,200 to benefit the Maryland School for the Blind’s recreation and adaptive ski programs. Pam Schirmer, from the MSB was present to accept the donation check. She was brought to tears by the generosity of our Club members. In addition to our Club's monetary donation, members also donat-ed used winter attire and ski gear for the students. Everyone should be proud of our donations!

Most importantly, Art Roerink announced election results during the meeting. So, yes we can continue to plan for another successful year with a full slate of officers and directors. But please re-member that this is your Club, and volunteers are still needed to serve on committees and apply as trip leaders or assistants. All members were given a Baltimore Ski Club magnet as a parting gift. Display it proudly on your vehicle to help advertise our Club. If anyone asks you, tell them to follow you to the best ski club on the East Coast.

The winner of the 50/50 raffle was Randy Shaw, who received $105 cash from Meetings Director LuAnn Snyder. Three additional raffle tickets were drawn, and each winner received a pair of lift tickets to WISP Ski Resort. The three winners were Maxine Cohen, Bill Shewchuk, and Mary Nichols. Congratulations to all - and remember you gotta play to win!

The Director’s Forum: Tips for Trips—Jan 2020

Why hasn’t the BSC planned a ski trip to a European destination in the last several years? Will we ever go again?

In the past a ski trip to Europe was routinely included in our annual trips schedule. However, a number of factors contributed to Europe being dropped from our lineup. Participation in the last few ski trips to Europe planned by the BSC declined to the point were the Club lost money because we were unable to reach the minimum numbers required in our contract with the tour operator. Also, there was little to no interest by our membership in the Blue Ridge Ski Council Eurofest. At one time a European trip was considerably more expensive than a Western destination. Driven by international airfares and exchange rates, domestic

destinations were more practical, cost effective, and preferred by our membership.

With the consolidation of domestic air carriers, rising lodging and lift ticket price points, the cost of skiing at a Western resort has risen dramatically. In contrast, the European market of late is now becoming much more attractive to individuals and clubs located in the US. Recently, the overall cost of a European ski trip can be equal to or less than a Western ski destination, which makes skiing abroad much more attractive. Due to these factors and the success of our Japan trip, the Trips Committee will explore possible international destinations for the BSC.

As always, member your opinion matters. Please take the time, if you haven’t so already, to let us know your thoughts on SurveyMonkey.

Dave Karczmarek, Trips Director

The Resurgence of Rear-Entry Boots Robert Hansen | December 12, 2019 |

20 years since Salomon scrapped the project, rear-entry boots are making a comeback. Ski boot manufacturers are looking for ways to keep people skiing longer. A recent poll conducted by SIA has shown that alpine skiers from 45-65 have increased in number. Similarly, skiers around 70 make up 7% of the market. Since this group of older rippers has become a large piece of the market it makes sense that ski companies should want to cater to their needs. What do these old rippers need? A boot that is easier to put on, easier to walk around in, and involves less bending over fiddling with buckles. The answer? The re-introduction of rear-entry ski boots.

Nordica and Atomic both have unveiled new rear entry boots. These boots may be a blast from the past but they are loaded with new tech to make them more comfortable and keep dad and hopefully grandpa skiing longer. The Nordica boot offers a moldable shell and thermal heaters in a lightweight package. The boot also features GripWalk soles that should help to mitigate slipping while walking around the resort. The Atomic boot has a single lever that locks the boot down to the rider’s shin that can be operated with one hand.

These manufacturers have hit the nail on the head here when it comes to reading the market. Retired or simply older skiers have more luxury time and the funds to splurge on a new boot. The boots are easy to get on and better yet are a throwback to the glory days when these guys were charging around the mountain. Not every innovation in skiing needs to be about going the biggest or fastest. Sometimes all we really need is to be more comfortable and to keep skiing! [Editor’s Note: Thanks to Chip Green for sending this information for the SCHUSS.—Sharon]

The rear entry buckle can be operated with a ski pole.

MEIER FAMILY BECOMES SOLE OWNER OF GREEK PEAK AND TOGGENBURG SAM Magazine—Virgil, N.Y., Dec. 17, 2019— John and Christine Meier have become the sole owners of Greek Peak Mountain Resort and Toggenburg Mountain in central New York. They acquired business partner Marc Stemerman’s 50 percent interest in the operations this November. The terms of the buyout have not been disclosed.

John and Christine Meier

John Meier and Stemerman bought Greek Peak out of bankruptcy for $7.5 million in 2013 and purchased Toggenburg in 2015. The partners had invested more than $10 million in upgrades primarily at Greek Peak over the last six years.

“I believe in investing in the mountain. Snowmaking and grooming equipment, pumphouses, lifts, trails and all of the associated infrastructure, both above and below ground, are what separates us from any other ski area in the region,” said Meier.

“I think becoming the 100 percent equity owners of Greek Peak will give a unifying vision around the direction of the resort moving forward,” he added.

Greek Peak is a four seasons resort with 220 skiable acres, six lifts, night and cross-country skiing, and tub-ing. Toggenburg is a winter-only operation with 20 trails, five lifts, and a tubing center. The two ski areas are roughly 40 minutes apart and offer a reciprocal season pass, allowing guests access to both hills.
