  • Snow Sport Specifics in Brief!!

Four ski areas make up the Engelberg

    resort…

    Titlis Area-

2000 meters of altitude difference of

slopes and trails, great snow con-

    ditions well into spring, breathtaking

    Alpine surroundings: three aspects

    that make the Engelberg-Titlis Ski

Area the special place it is.

It’s one of the largest ski areas in

Central Switzerland with no less than

25 lifts and means of uphill trans-

port. Boasting 82 km of slopes, the

    Engelberg-TITLIS ski area offers

plenty of variety. The total route

length for downhill skiing and snow-

    boarding is 82 kilometres. The

incline length (downhill route) is 55

kilometres. Within the system of 82

km of slopes, there are downhill runs

for the ‚pros’ as well as 3 slopes for

beginners. Glacial slopes at 3'000 m

above sea level make skiing possible

from October till May - there’s

    always snow!

Outdoor sports + fresh air = hunger:

There are plenty of restaurants to

choose from to take care of that!

Italian pasta, French fries or classic

    Swiss ‚Älplermagronen’ - or what-

ever dish it takes to recharge winter

athletes so that they’re ready to hit

the slopes again for more thrilling

    downhill runs.

A tip: the downhill run to the valley

is the longest stretch - covering a

distance of 12 km with an altitude

    difference of 2'000 m. What a perfect

way to wrap up a day on the slopes!

There are red, bue, blaclk, and

    yellow sloped. Beginners and pro-

fessional – nobody gets bored here!

Brunni – the Sunny Side of

    Engelberg

    Enjoy 7 kilometers of well-prepared

trails and the sunniest slopes for

    skiing and snowboarding in Central

Switzerland on the brunni. Psst! A

    little secret: black-marker Schonegg-

Piste offers one of the prettiest views

    of the mountains surrounding

    Engelberg

The Bannalp Area it the jewel in

the crown of the canton of

    Nidwalden. With its unspoiled

    nature, snowy landscapes, fresh

mountain air, this is the perfect >>>

    SIERRA NEVADA / GRANADA

    and TORREMOLINOS, SPAIN March 10 – 19, 2018

There are few places in the world where you can ski in the morning then head to the coast for a swim in the afternoon, but the proximity of Sierra Nevada to the Med allows this. Don't be fooled into thinking that the skiing will be second rate either. 21 l ifts serve 107 km of piste at the Sierra Nevada but it can get busy at the weekends with bottlenecks at the lifts. The pistes lend themselves to the intermediate but there is ample off-piste skiing for the

advanced riders. Off the pistes, there are some good restaurants and lively bars. If you get bored or the snow is not as good in the Sierra Nevada, just head for a beach! A halfpipe was added to the snowpark Sulayr in 2011 (165m long and 6m high). It is the biggest in Spain. The snow junior world championship was celebrated in this park. It is the longest Slopestyle line in Europe with over 77 different obstacles and up 46 possible in any one run!

The Snowboard and Freestyle World Championships 2017 were hosted here in March.

Granada and Sierra Nevada in Brief……

    Granada’s dramatic alpine backdrop is

the Sierra Nevada range, which extends

about 75km from west to east and into

    Almería province. Its wild snow-capped

peaks include the highest point in main-

land Spain, while the lower reaches of the

range, known as Las Alpujarras (some-

times just La Alpujarra), are dotted with

tiny scenic villages. From July to early

    September, the higher elevations offer

    wonderful multiday trekking and day

hikes. Outside of this period, there’s risk

of seriously inclement weather, but the

    lower Alpujarras are always welcoming,

with most snow melting away by May.

    The 862-sq-km Parque Nacional Sierra

Nevada, Spain’s largest national park, is

    home to 2100 of Spain’s 7000 plant

species, among them unique types of

    crocus, narcissus, thistle, clover, poppy

    and gentian. Andalucía’s largest ibex

population (about 5000) is here, too,

    frolicking above 2800m. Surrounding the

national park at lower altitudes is the

Parque Natural Sierra Nevada, with a

    lesser degree of protection.

Along the southern edge of the protected

area, Las Alpujarras is a 70km-long

jumble of valleys along the southern

flank of the Sierra Nevada. It is a

    beautiful, diverse and even slightly

strange place. Its landscape of arid

slopes, deep crags and egg-white villages

look as if they were spilled onto the

    mountainside, the towns on the

    mountain’s lower belts simmer with

    spiritual seekers, long-term travelers and

    rat-race dropouts, while the higher

    villages have a disorienting timelessness.

    Even the most-visited Alpujarran towns

are appealing, as the villages’ Berber-

style flat-roofed houses and the winding

lanes between them look out on hillsides

that have been carefully terraced and

irrigated since the earliest Moorish times.

    With well-trod footpaths connecting each

settlement, it’s a delightful area to

    explore on foot.

    Torremolinos is a Mediterranean resort

town on southern Spain's Costa del Sol,

known for its sandy beaches such as El

    Bajondillo and La Carihuela. Nightlife,

dining and shopping are centered on

Calle San Miguel. Away from the beach-

front and its high-rise hotels are several

golf courses and amusement parks, as

well as pockets of traditional Andalusian

culture such as the village of El Calvario.

  • ` As one of Europe's highest resorts it is very snowsure and typically has a long season. Traditionally the season starts around the end of November running through to the first week of May. The longest season on record was the winter of 2008/9 which ran from the 15th November 2008 until the 17th May 2009. Sierra Nevada literally means "Snowy Mountain Range" and it includes some of the highest peaks in Europe, not to mention the highest concentration of peaks over 3,000m in the country. The Mulhacen at 3,482m is the Iberian Peninsula's highest. The ski terrain is majestically overlooked by the jagged glacier-formed Veleta peak at 3,398m, Spain's

third highest after Aneto (3,404m) in the Pyrenees. Due to the altitude, the ski slopes are above the tree line and generally take the form of ski fields rather than narrow prepared tracks - something that favours the more nervous skier in particular as well as generally giving a sense of confidence all round, especially for off piste fanatics! The Sierra Nevada ski resort offers its visitors a wide and ever expanding range of facilities as well as a ski terrain to suit skiers and boarders of all standards.

  • Barcelona is the capital city of the autonomous community of Catalonia in the Kingdom of Spain, as well as the country's second most populous municipality, with a population of 1.6 million within city limits.[2] Its urban area extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of around 4.7 million people,[5] being the sixth-most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, Madrid, the Ruhr area and Milan. It is the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola mountain range, the tallest peak of which is 512 metres (1,680 feet) high. Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city in the Crown of Aragon as an economic and administrative centre of this Crown and the capital of the Principality of Catalonia. Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination. Particularly renowned are the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean is located in Barcelona. The city is known for hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as world-class conferences and expositions and also many international sport tournaments. Barcelona is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair and cultural centres, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. It is a major cultural and economic centre in southwestern Europe, 24th in the world (before Zürich, after Frankfurt) and a financial centre. In 2008 it was the fourth most economically powerful city by GDP in the European Union and 35th in the world. Now it is leading Spain in both employment rate and GDP per capita change. In 2009 the city was ranked Europe's third and one of the world's most successful as a city brand. In the same year the city was ranked Europe's fourth best city for business and fastest improving European city, with growth improved by 17% per year, and the city has been experiencing strong and renewed growth for the past three years. Since 2011 Barcelona has been a leading smart city in Europe Barcelona is a transport hub, with the Port of Barcelona being one of Europe's principal seaports and busiest European passenger port,, an international airport, Barcelona–El Prat Airport, which handles over 40 million passengers per year, an extensive motorway network, and a high-speed rail line with a link to France and the rest of Europe. from Wikipedia

LSSC TRIP TO CANAAN VALLEY & TIMBERLINE

    February 11 – 14

Left to right: Jim Blackwell, Robin Jones, Ray Clark, Jeanne Clark, Tom O’Donnell, Don Dance, Kate Wilford, Charles

Bright, Terry Carrico, Jennifer Tavitian, Julian Fischer-Lhamon, Terry Chism, Howard Glauert, Ellie Todd, Mike Lhamon,

Tammy Johnson, Annette Riehle. Not pictured: Keith Hubbard

Eighteen club members made the trip to West Virginia for our first local overnight trip in several years. We stayed at

Canaan Valley Resort & Conference Center and skied at Canaan Valley on Monday and Timberline on Tuesday. Ski

resorts are at the mercy of Mother Nature. For the days leading up to our trip, it looked like we were in for a wash-out.

Fortunately, the rains held off until mid-afternoon on Tuesday, allowing us to get in almost two full days of skiing. While

both resorts had some slopes closed, there was ample terrain for everyone to enjoy their skiing experience. These

resorts have a lot to offer and I look forward to a return trip at some point in the future.

A big welcome goes to our new club members: Tom O’Donnell, Kate Wilford, Julian Fischer-Lhamon, Terry Chism, Ellie

Todd, Mike Lhamon, and Tammy Johnson

  • LSSC TRIP TO STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

    January 27 – February 3

Back Left: Terry Carrico, Bob Durborow, Tom O’Donnell, Beth O’Donnell, Dan Geiger, Bud Blair, David Eckmann, Andrew

Morgan, and Don Dance. Front Left: Jena King, Wendy Anderson, Robin Jones, Barbara Anderson, Sharon Woollam,

Peter Woollam, Tara Keegan, Pat Boggs, David Martin, and Teresa Mitchell. Lower Left: Susan and Buck Buckley. Not

pictured from the LSSC: Robert Smyth. Not pictured from the Dayton Ski & Board Club: Bob LeValley, Chelsea

LeValley, Harvey Learner, Dave Cox, and Keri Cox

Twenty-seven club members gathered in Steamboat for a wonderful week of skiing (twenty-two from the LSSC and five

from the Dayton Ski Club). Most flew direct on Southwest out of Louisville to Denver and hopped a bus for a 4-hour

    scenic drive to Steamboat.

We stayed at the Phoenix, which was conveniently located near the slopes. In fact, it was almost ski-in/ski-out for those

of us located on the lower side of the complex (sorry Barbara, Wendy, Theresa and Jena). Many of us took full

advantage of the two outdoor hot tubs and heated pool. A number of us gathered in their large lounge area on Tuesday

night to watch UK’s exciting 83-81 overtime victory over Vanderbilt.

The OVSC treated us to a Welcome Reception on Sunday evening. Everyone enjoyed the food, drinks, door prizes, fun

and fellowship of skiers/boarders from the LSSC, Dayton Ski & Board, and Skiers Limited Ski Club (from Columbus OH).

The OVSC also sponsored a picnic on the slopes on Tuesday. It was a perfect place and day. The sun was shining and

most shed their ski jacket to soak up the rays as they enjoyed their lunch.

After skiing three consecutive days, many opted for something different on Wednesday. Some enjoyed a day of

shopping, others a visit to Strawberry Park Hot Springs, still others went on a snowshoeing tour. Nine of us enjoyed a 4-

hour snowmobiling adventure in Rabbit Ears Pass. The scenery was breathtaking.

  • It was back to the slopes on Thursday and Friday. After lunch on Friday, at the suggestion of Bob Durborow, we

participated in a Billy Kidd Ski Clinic. Billy Kidd won a silver medal in the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. I thought it

would simply be a meet and greet and we would be on our way. Not the case. There were about 25 people in the clinic,

eight of which were from the LSSC. As we had bright OVSC bandanas tied to our legs or arms, he initially focused his

attention on us. As it turns out, he came to Lexington to speak at an OVSC Summit several years ago. As the Olympics

were right around the corner, the focus of his clinic was to ensure we looked like we belonged in the Olympics – and

that started with how we stand on the slopes. After we all passed the standing test, he proceeded to take us down a

slope where he stopped several times to give us tips. It was both enjoyable and informative.

The OVSC sponsored a Farewell Dinner Friday evening on the slopes. We enjoyed a gondola ride to mid-mountain for

dinner at Hazies. It was a nice way to end the week.

I would like to give a shout out to seven new LSSC members who joined us on the Steamboat trip. They are Pat Boggs,

Andrew Morgan, David Eckmann, Jena King, Teresa Mitchell, and Tom and Beth O’Donnell.

Billy Kidd Beautiful day on the slopes

  • In the news

    Spread the word…

Don’t forget to pick up some LSSC business cards at our next meeting. This is a great way to

spread the word about our club. Hand them out to your friends. Post them at your favorite

hangouts. If you are unable to make it to a meeting, but would like some to distribute, or if

you know of places we can post our business card, please drop an email to

    [email protected].

Our use of social media and online event calendars continues to grow. We post to 16 online

event calendars and eight Facebook groups. If you haven’t already, be sure to Like our

Facebook page www.facebook.com/LexSkiSports. It also helps when you share our Facebook

posts and events to other groups to which you belong. Our club is growing and with your help

it will continue to do so. With skiing, like most things in life, the more the merrier.
