Looking Ahead with Steve
Staff meetings at First Bible Church 24 years ago consisted of me walking into Earlene Baker’s office and asking her what was on the calendar for the week. In the years that followed, the Lord grew our church, and our staff. Now, every Tuesday morning , we meet together to bear testimony to what the Lord is doing in and through you our church family, to pray for you, and to plan the church’s schedule in a way that coordinates all of our efforts for maximum impact. That meeting is almost always punctuated by a lot of laughter in a group of people who really enjoy working with each other.
The Lord has given us an exceptional team here. I don’t have time or space to mention every one of our church’s twenty-one employees, but I’ll briefly mention our ordained pastors. Bruce Ellsworth was the first pastor I added to our staff over 23 years ago. As the worship pastor, he plans the worship, coordinates volunteer musicians, singers, and technical personnel for five worship services every Sunday in three different locations. In addition, he is our in-house IT expert. Jess Montegudo, as the associate pastor, spends much of his day visiting the hospitals and counseling, in addition to leading Celebrate Recovery, Men’s Prayer Breakfast, and the Field House worship service. Vance Helms as the discipleship pastor, leads our Adult Bible Fellow-ship ministry, assimilation ministry, and the First Bible Church Institute. Paul Cheshier, as the outreach pastor, spends a lot of time in the community representing Christ and our church in schools, the workplace, and on job sites, as well as counseling people in need. Alexander Roberts is the Madison Campus Pastor and watches over a flock of more than two hundred people, leading the ministry team in Madison, following up with visitors, visiting hospitals, and giving pastoral care and counsel.
In recent days, Scottie Hubbard has been serving as a volunteer executive pastor, and he has helped me considerably in managing our talented and gifted staff in a way that releases them to do the most good for God’s glory. All of us who serve as pastors here have been blessed by his leadership as he helps me give direction and encouragement to the rest of the team. I believe it is in the best interest of our church to make this position of Executive Pastor a permanent position. On April 3, at a specially called congregational meeting you will have an opportunity to weigh in.
