GUARDIAN WATCHMEN We have had our first meeting of the season last week. Our watchmen are excited for the next few months of patrolling and interacting with people in the traditional territories. We have many training opportunities coming up for our crew; biomass sampling, archaeological asset identification, and bird and marine mammal identification. Our crew is excited gain more knowledge and to improve at their jobs. We will be looking for two more junior watchmen in the next few weeks so keep your eyes peeled for a posting at the Band office as well as on Facebook. These positions are dependent on our being successful for NVIATS training dollars. Our crew will be updating regularly throughout the season. Adam Munn is our new vessel operator trainee as well we have Jozi Child and Elisha Taylor-Child as our cultural guides and gift shop operators for the upcoming tourism season.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

Spring is here, and everything is starting to come to life. I want to share with you something that I'm very excited about. In May 2012, under the guidance and direction of the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elders: Matt Martin, the Home Care Nurse and I came up with the idea of starting a community garden. We met with the councilors and received their support. They also designated the vacant lot next to the bus shed to be used for the garden.

In November 2012 the Vancouver Island & Coastal Communities Indigenous Food Network (VICCIFN) came to Tsulquate to help with the garden. They donated seeds, cedar to build the raised beds and brought volunteers. We built 12 raised garden beds and planted two with garlic and one with salad greens. At the time we weren't able to place and plant the rest of the raised beds because the ground was too uneven and swampy. Ken & Ernie Knopp offered to volunteer their services to level the lot. Last week they did just that, the lot is now a perfect location for the garden.

GNN MARINE SERVICES UPDATE

GNN Marine Services would like to announce that Angela Smith, owner of Creative Exposure and managing consultant for our GNN Marine Services is leaving our company. Angela has done an excellent job since coming to work for the Nations approximately a year ago. Angela is leaving the program in far better shape than she found it- thank you. We wish Angela all the best in her future endeavours and we are sure to see her out on the water!!

Angela was able to mentor a staff member and prepare him to take on a leadership role, this is the whole idea of bringing in outside talent- to help build up our community’s capacity to take on the roles ourselves. We are excited to announce that Leslie Walkus is going to continue to train and work into his new role of GNN Marine Services Manager. Congratulations Leslie!

EC DEV UPDATE

The work of starting our economic development corporation is well under way. We are currently looking at recent court decisions around First Nations liability cases as well as recent CRA (Canadian Revenue Agency) decisions that might affect the way that we set up our structure.

We already have 2 businesses incorporated; Gwa’Nak Resources and we are just finishing

incorporating GNN Marine Services. When we have completed our information gathering we will be looking to hold some community meetings to share with you the vision of the Ecdev Corporation as well as to discuss the business opportunities that are being looked at.

We are excited about getting the Ecdev Corporation up and running, the sooner we do that the sooner the Nations are going to be protected from any potential liability and tax issues. If you have any questions about this work please contact Conrad at 250 902 2301

JOB CALLOUT LIST

We are happy to say that our callout list is starting to see some results!! We have been able to call 12 different people (2 were bypassed because they are still in school, we will include them once school is out) and have been able to offer some temporary work to 7 of you. We also have had success at keeping 2 of you going seasonal fulltime!!

We will continue to work with all of you over the coming weeks to try to help find some work. One thing that I will mention is there are going to be times when a job comes in that is suitable for the females on the list, in these circumstances we will try to get them that job.

Right now there are mostly positions for the males coming in, this is something I will continue to work with the companies to see if we can’t expand on the people they are looking for. I am happy to say that when you are out there the companies are very happy with your work, this is extremely important as we continue to build relationships with all of the different industries. If we keep performing really well at the work that is offered more work will come our way.

EKE ME-XI: CLAM DIGGING TRIP

On April 25 the students joined up with Mr. Williams’ class (from PHSS) to go on a clam digging trip to Cluxewe. The weather was great and everyone had an awesome time!

SALMON FRY RELEASE We received 50 salmon fry from Quatse Hatchery, and successfully had 50 fry to release! We released the fry on April 23rd into the Tslquate River. We partnered with students from the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwax’dw school for the celebration.

We formed a circle around the fry before letting them go and Willie Walkus shared a few words with us on the significance of the Salmon to the First Nations People. K’odi explained the importance of the fry being released by having a Salmon Ceremony.

The staff and Students at Eke Me-xi enjoyed the process of raising the fry and we look forward to doing it again next year! Thanks to the twins for their beautiful presence.

PUBLIC WORKS UPDATE EMERGENCY PLAN: The Emergency Planning Committee has been quite busy in the past month. We were able to purchase a tsunami siren in March and currently have two companies putting a quote together to help us install the siren. Some of the committee members were able to take some courses and attend a conference:

• April 13, Evacuations course in Port McNeill. Grace Smith, Karla Broadfoot, Lucy Hemphill and Nicole McLelland.

• April 19, 20 and 21, Annual Vancouver Island Emergency Preparedness Conference in Saanich. Jessie Hemphill, Karla broadfoot, Lucy Hemphill, Cathy and Bob Swain.

• April 27, Resource Acquisition in Port McNeill. Jessie Hemphill, Karla Broadfoot, Nicole McLelland, Cathy and Bob Swain.

I would like to say Thank You to the Emergency Committee members for taking the time to attend the training courses. Without you the emergency plan wouldn’t move forward. Thank you.

Some more courses coming to Port McNeill this year for the committee are “Reception Centre“, June 1 and, “Managing Walk In Volunteers”, Sept. 28.

The training above is paid for by the Regional District of Mount Waddington. I have submitted a proposal to AANDC to see if we can get some emergency management courses here in Tsulquate for the committee members. I’m also submitting another proposal to Healthy Communities for some funding that is currently available. We will be having our regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Thursday May 2, at Wakas Hall 10-11am. It is Emergency Preparedness week during May 6-10 and we are working on plans for an Open House to be held once again at the Memorial Park. Stay tuned. VAN ISL EMERGENCY PREP CONFERENCE

During a presentation about “Psychological Support” presenters showed this quilt. It’s made up of squares that are drawings by people who went through trauma, showing what the traumatic thing was that happened to them. The quilt was part of a healing process for these people.

COMMUNITY GARDEN CONT. Janine Sheard asked the Elders to write down all the things they would like to grow in the garden, she then gave the list to me. I ordered all the seeds, which arrived two weeks ago. We now have everything we need to start planting and we will be doing so over the next couple weeks. We're planning to have a work-party in the next couple weeks to get everything set up.

The idea is for the garden to be a way for our elders, and eventually other community members to be able to afford good nutritious food. Buying healthy food at Overwaitea seems to be more expensive then processed foods, but processed foods have a detrimental effect on our health. We hope that people will start to take an interest in the garden. Once you learn the basics of gardening it's easy, and believe it or not you can successfully grow tonnes of different veggies and fruit here on the north Island. SPORTS & RECREATION Soccer season is underway and it’s wonderful to see so many participating and having fun, the weather is certainly shaping up. I am seeking help for ideas for Fundraising to allow the Youth of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations to share in the fun of representing their community.

SPORTS & REC CALENDAR: At the request of the participants these are the days and times so far; nothing is in stone and will change over time. Days of the hall are upon availability of community events/meetings. Still working out details for the Recreation side but things are looking up, keep an eye out on Facebook to see what our Friends at Sacred Wolf Friendship Center are up to, their doors are always open and have some fantastic opportunities to participate in with Davis Henderson.

ABORIGINAL BURSARIES SEARCH TOOL

Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development Canada has launched a new aboriginal bursaries search tool for post-secondary students. The aboriginal bursaries search tool links to more than 680 bursaries, scholarships and other awards from across Canada. The tool enables students to conduct a detailed search to find a bursary, scholarship or award to meet their needs. All they need to do is enter their field of study and the province where they are studying and hit enter to see opportunities that await. The search tool is among the country’s most comprehensive search tools referencing more than $10 million in bursaries, scholarships and other incentives which detail criteria, deadlines and contact information. Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development Canada’s aboriginal bursaries search tool can be found at aandc.gc.ca/bursaries We also added it to the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw website’s education page – just go to www.gwanak.info, and type education in the search bar to go to the education page.

SURVEY Surveyors are going around the community doing a “Community Wellbeing Survey” to determine the “wellness” of our community, so that in future years we can track whether we are getting “healthier” or not as a whole community.

TRUST PROPOSALS After the April 17th Trust Meeting, all six of the proposals passed. Stay tuned for a more in-depth breakdown of the votes for and against each proposal, and total number of voters.
