BIGHOUSE UPDATE

GREAT NEWS!!

Yesterday afternoon we learned that the

Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations will

acquire 50,000 cubic meters of trees from

our homelands to build our own Gukwdzi.

Above is a draft concept with inclusion of totems

representing each family also is a proposed meeting place to

the left of the proposed bighouse.

What Next?

Bighouse Meeting – needs to happen next to

help plan items listed below. This meeting will

take place within the next two weeks, the sooner

the better. Please watch for the notice of date,

time and place.

Ground Breaking – Where will the GNN

Bighouse be constructed? We will plan a

ceremony to bless land where our Bighouse will

be built. We will need to plan a date, food, guest

list and all involved with the Ground Breaking

Ceremony.

Hiring Master Carvers and Apprentices –

We will develop a fair process to acquire bids

from prospective carvers to hire and to bring

forward members of the community who wish to

learn and help build the Bighouse. We will

develop a terms of reference that includes all of

the interests and standards our elders and

community have spoken about over the past

three years of Bighouse meetings with regard to

who we wish to hire to help to carve the four

house posts, the cross beams, and other carvings

as required.

Bighouse construction – We have our own

construction crews of the Kawatsi Construction

Company, no doubt they will be asked to build

the Bighouse.

Timber in the Homelands –Trees will be

harvested and transported to destinations

including Tsulquate for milling and sale to pay

costs for harvesting, crews to construct the

Bighouse, equipment costs, carvers/apprentice

carvers and so on.

Starting soon –There are other considerations

as we move through the process of building our

own Bighouse. The bottom line is that we want to

get this done as soon as we can without cutting

corners. Interested ‘up and coming’ carvers will

have an opportunity to participate and grow in

their carving craft. We will post the Bighouse

concept drawings in locations for the community

members to see.

Please keep watch for the Bighouse meeting

announcement and attend to have further input

toward construction of our dream Bighouse. To

allow participation of those who work during the

day or youth we will have an evening meeting.

These are exciting times! As Chief Paddy said

yesterday in his FB post, “Another long hard

fight to get but with the collective effort we did

it!” And I concur – Gila’kasla to all that are

continuing to make this happen!

Please contact me should you have questions.

Gila’kasla.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 5, 2016 Tla'amin becomes the eighth First Nation to implement a modern treaty in BC VANCOUVER - Today the Tla'amin Final Agreement takes effect, becoming the eighth constitutionally protected modern treaty to be implemented in BC. The Treaty Commission congratulates the Tla'amin (Sliammon) First Nation, Canada, and British Columbia on reaching this historic day. Tla'amin joins Tsawwassen First Nation, the five Maa-nulth First Nations, and the Nisga'a Nation in implementation of a modern treaty, the ultimate form of reconciliation. The Nisga'a treaty was negotiated earlier, while the other seven treaties were negotiated in the BC treaty negotiations process. The Tla'amin Final Agreement received Royal Assent in 2014. The First Nation has been preparing for the Effective Date by drafting laws and preparing for self-governance. The treaty provides Tla'amin First Nation with 8,323 hectares of treaty settlement lands and a one-time capital transfer of approximately $31.1 million over ten years. In addition, it provides economic development funding of approximately $7.3 million, a fishing vessel fund of $0.3 million, and $0.7 million annually in resource revenue sharing for fifty years. There are approximately 1,075 Tla'amin citizens, with traditional territory and waters around the Powell River area, including Lesqueti, Texada, and Cortes Islands, and the Comox Valley. "Congratulations to the Tla'amin people for choosing a brighter and more prosperous future for their Nation and for the Powell River region," said Commissioner Jerry Lampert, who has worked with the parties for eight years. "This treaty strengthens their government, culture and land, and strengthens the economy of the Powell River region."

Social Development News!

I would like to thank all the ones who have already come in to

renew your files, I do still need the updated BC Hydro bills, if

you haven’t come in to renew your file by Friday April 222016

you will not receive your cheques until your file is updated

and the week of social assistance I will not accept any

appointments.

You will need 2 pieces of Id for yourself and at least 1

for everyone else on your file.

My work hours are from Monday- Friday 8AM-4PM

given the days I take off, I will not answer any texts

or calls after hours, if you wish to see me please make

an appointment with Bernadine at the front desk.

There will be changes to Special needs this fiscal year, there

will be no personal purchases we will only issue cheques to

businesses, we have had several people abuse the system

the past fiscal year to be able to continue on with personal

purchases, this has been passed through AANDC and GNN

Chief and council. Special needs will be available again

on June 1st.

BC Hydro payments is underway I have set up payment

plans again for everyone so we are hoping no one will

receive any more disconnection notices, we had a very bad

communication system with BC Hydro and myself as I was

new to the program but have got it sorted out. If you do get

a disconnection bill I need it handed in as soon as you get it

so I can make arrangements with BC Hydro for you.

Work

I know that several businesses has started work, I ask that

you please be honest with me and bring your payslips into

me so we can adjust your cheques, if this isn’t done properly

you may end up be suspended from the program until

further notice.

However we do encourage work I will be working with

places to get people on our call out list work this summer. If

you are called from the call out list and you decline work

you are at risk to be suspended for that month to receive

your social assistance. If you aren’t already on the list and

you are employable I will put you on the list. According to

the AANDC agreement we should have started work search

programs for each employable client, instead of that we will

start working closely with the call out list.

If you are unable to work when called in for whatever

reason we do require a note from your doctor. The only other

exception is lack of daycare we know that it is a tough

situation all around, I can help get child subsidy set up for

you so that you can get the income that you need to support

your family. I will also have a list of daycares that you can

look into.

Programs

We will have cedar weaving quarterly, as we needed to give

other talented community members a chance to show what

they know, we will invite visitors and community members

to share their knowledge of different areas of culture. I will

keep you posted when anything new comes up.

Workshops

I will be inviting local visitors to facilitate workshops that

has to do with Family violence, we are looking at inviting

Suzette Amaya and her group to come up and share, we will

also have Andrea Cranmer coming back.

Wood orders

We have done up a new budget for the wood orders and

have come down to 2 loads per month no exceptions we have

4 guys doing the orders these guys are Jeff Fields, Albert

Charlie, Patrick Walkus and Brian David we work down the

list of people who applied. I know there has been several

requests for other people but for our program and reporting

we have to have only the people that apply and have

resumes in with us for file. We are very confident that these

gentlemen will all be great guys to get your wood that you

need, when you come in to request wood we ask that you let

the receptionist know your preference you may also select

the kind of wood that you would like. If you wish to have

someone apply then we ask that they have a resume at

hand for us to put on file they will be put on the list as they

came in.

Home making and home makers

We have approx. 15 elders and PWD on file that are

receiving homecare assistance (homemaking) I am doing

evaluations in the next couple weeks, I would like to have

all homemakers come in to set an appointment to come see

me as well I would like all the homemaking clients to call

me so I can set the appointment up so I can come see you.

The whole intension of this evaluation is to keep record and

have efficient reports that this program is running as great

as it should, so we want your input and vision of what you

might like to see happen or things that should be happening

that isn’t with each other. Please make these appointments

as soon as possible call me at the office if you can’t make it

in.

People who are receiving homecare please know that

it is up to you who you want as your homemaker.

Good Food Bag Program & Community Garden

What is the Good Food Bag Program?

The GFB program is every other Wednesday at the

Elders Centre. The bag consists of fresh fruits,

vegetables and ingredients for a healthy recipe at only

$10.00 a bag but for those on social assistance, the

$10.00 is deducted each month.

There is a lot of interest in the program but

unfortunately I am only able to put together 35 bags

maximum. I do have a waiting list started and for those

who are on it, I haven't forgotten about you :)

Just a reminder that bags need to be picked up on the

pick up date otherwise they will be given/sold to the

next person on the waiting list. However, if you are

unable to pick up yourself, you can arrange for someone

to pick up for you!

Next GFB date: April 20 2016

The garden is looking awesome already!

So far there is raspberries, strawberries, kale, potatoes,

cabbage, mint, beans, peas, rhubarb and chives in the

garden beds. I do have some growing inside that will be

transferred to the beds when they are ready!

I had tons of great help from Tiffany Spencer! She

helped me get the garden started, planting information

and tips, planning everything and shared her awesome

ideas and knowledge with me as well! A huge thank you

to her :)

If anyone is interested in gardening or see me working

in there, feel free to drop by! :)

Have a great weekend!
