To all of the faculty whose published scholarship we celebrate today: we congratulate

you on your outstanding accomplishments, and we are inspired by your achievement.

Certainly, your published work adds substantially to the global body of knowledge—

an accomplishment of great significance in itself. But this alone does not adequately

express the weight of your scholarly contributions, or the scope of their impact.

Through your scholarship, you embody our university’s core mission as a public research

university: to contribute in lasting ways to the greater public good.

Your achievements prove that the best scholarship is, at its heart, an act of community-

building. Your theories make possible new ways of thinking about problems that are as

old as humanity itself. And your discoveries and innovations help to improve the quality

of life for individuals and communities the world over.

The publication of your work means that your unique insights, your field-shaping theories,

and your pioneering discoveries are inscribed in libraries and collections around the world.

But they are by no means bound by the volumes they are printed in. On the contrary,

they are very much alive—everywhere that scholars gather to discuss and debate your

arguments, in every student inspired to take your insights in an entirely new direction,

and in each life-changing development that began with the germ of your ideas.

An important component of UB’s success is the product of the individual and collective

efforts of faculty such as you who have translated your scholarship and research onto the

printed page. We salute and honor the legacy of your work at today’s event as we launch

a new tradition at UB recognizing the publications of UB authors.

The transformation of your academic work into book form advances our created

knowledge, adds to our understanding of the world we live in, and contributes to our

collective understanding of life in all its forms. Today’s event embraces a wide range of

scholarship from the arts and humanities, the natural and social sciences, and the health

and physical sciences and professions. It is a true reflection of the breadth and depth of

the expertise of our university.

We honor your determination and discipline in bringing your work to the printed page. May

this celebration be an inspiration to others, and encourage you to even further success.

My heartfelt congratulations,

“Unusual for a business book offering management advice...It offers

many lessons that would be helpful to managers in almost every segment

of business–or even government.”

Andrew H. Card Jr., former White House Chief of Staff, The Wall Street Journal

“A richly documented institutional ethnography and narrative–

a probing and insightful book on cultural identity.”

Victor Nee, Cornell University

“An excellent study...uses sophisticated social theory–quite elegantly–

for a readable and insightful analysis...provides a fresh model and

another high standard for scholars.”

JournalofAmericanHistory

“This is a persuasively argued, meticulously researched, and compelling

examination of the media phenomenon in American culture. It is highly

readable as well.”

Joyce Carol Oates, author

“Important...provides a valuable snapshot that will benefit school

administrators, counselors, teachers, and personnel. This is a timely

publication.”

Peter A. Newcombe, University of Queensland, Australia
