1 2015-2016 A N N U A L R E P O R T The year 2015-16 embarks 34th year in the progress of Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini (RMP). With the three fold agenda of training, public awakening and research, several innovative programmes were organised by RMP in this year. Hon’ble. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the nation from Red Fort on 15th August, 2015 announced the programme ‘Start-Up India – Stand-Up India’; on this background a national convention was organised by Prabodhini. One more noteworthy achievement is the recognition to Prabodhini by University of Mumbai as the research centre for Ph.D. in political science and M.A.( by research) in political science. 1. Noteworthy Programmes:1.1 National Convention: Start-Up India – Stand- Up India : 16-17 January, 2016

On the eve of the 69th Independence Day, while addressing the nation from Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed the youth from dalit, women and tribal sections to pursue entrepreneurship in the rural sector through the concept of Start-Up India, Stand-Up India.

On this background, a two-day National Convention was organised by Prabodhini on 16th and 17th January 2016. The convention was attended by 141 delegates from 15 states across India representing 86 NGOs and 20 representatives from industries. For the past few years national conventions were being organised by Prabodhini on themes like volunteer training, CSR and Swachha Bharat. This convention aimed at encouraging rural entrepreneurship especially tribal and scheduled caste women entrepreneurship and the factors facilitating it.

Padmabhushan Dr. Vijay Bhatkar inaugurated the convention. The 21st century is the century of Asia while the last century belonged to U.S. and Japan, said Dr. Bhatkar. He further talked about the rise of several civilisations in history and pointed out that only Hindu civilisation lasted; the reason for which, as explained by Dr. Bhatkar is the basis of the civilisation consisting of both – the spiritual knowledge and the scientific knowledge, adding further that Yoga is a manifestation of that principle. Dr. Bhatkar underlined the necessity of the start-up for rural sector since 70% of our livelihood is from villages and expressed hope for transformation of economy from machine to bio- economy.

Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Director General of Prabodhini, while speaking about the concept of

the convention, quoted Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and said that the employment seeker should become the employment generator and that the participation of people in governance is important. He further highlighted the role of the NGOs working at the local levels and stated that, finally, ‘hand-holding’ is required for the development.

Prof. Aniruddha Deshpande, Chairman of Prabodhini, chaired the inaugural session. Ravindra Sathe, Executive Director of Prabodhini gave a welcome address while Santosh Gupta, convenor of the convention proposed a vote of thanks.

In the first session,Santosh Gupta, CEO, ISRN, elaborated on policies and strategies for the promotion of Start-Ups in the session on ‘Unveiling the plan of government of India on ‘Start-Up India, Stand-Up India Perspectives’. He underlined the need to have entrepreneurship specifically in rural India. Rajeev Gupte, Director MSME schemes, informed about the role of MSME to advise government in policy formulation and provide facilities for technology up-gradation.

Second session was conducted on ‘How to Promote Rural Entrepreneurship – Adivasi and Dalit Women’. Padmashri Ashok Bhagat of Vikas Bharati chaired the session. Santosh Panda, Former Secretary, Ministry of Textile of Government of India, Jaya Jaitley, a social activist and chairperson of Dastakari Haat Samiti and Milind Kamble, Chairman, Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI) were the dignitaries who participated in this session.

The third session was ‘Business incubators and Investment Intelligence in Promotion of Start-Ups’. Ashish Chauhan, MD and CEO of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) chaired the session and discussed the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) status in India. Swapnil Rai of IFIF Bhopal was the moderator of the

session. Vishnu Swaminathan of Ashoka Innovators participated in the session who talked about digging into hidden opportunities. The general opinion expressed was the need of creativity as well as the favourable conditions to encourage the entrepreneurship.

On second day, the first session was based on ‘Role of Government Institutions in Artisan Entrepreneurship’. T. V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Manipal Global Education chaired the session. Anand Shekhar of ‘Global Sanitation Fund in India’ was the moderator of the session. Y. K. Baramatikar, Dy. Chief Executive Officer, KVIC, participated in the session. Baramatikar stated that with 7000 outlets and 15000 associated institutions, Khadi Udyog was involving 5-6 lakh artisans.

Second session of the day was ‘Innovative Strategies of Rural Skill Development in Start-Up India’. Amit Tuteja of Connecting Dreams Foundation, Delhi, Jyotsna Sitling, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and G. R. Raghavendra, Director General, NPC participated in the session. The speakers elaborated on innovative strategies for rural skill development and explained the various schemes offered by Government to facilitate the same among the youth and women in the rural sector for the information of the delegates.

The next session ‘Best Practices of Promoting Entrepreneurship among Underprivileged Community’ was moderated by senior journalist of Rajasthan Patrika Dr. Shipra Mathur. Veteran Gandhian thinker and activist Basant Kumar chaired the session. Biplaab of Bhungaroo, Dr. K Venkatraman of Govardhan Eco Village, Vijay Pratap Singh Aditya, CEO of Ekgaon, Abhay Mahajan of Deendayal Research Institute, Chitrakoot, participated in the session.

The general opinion expressed was that the underprivileged community needs to be economically empowered and that it was possible to achieve through encouraging entrepreneurship.

The chief guest at the valedictory programme was Ajit Prasad Mohapatra, RSS Sahaseva Pramukh. The session was chaired by Swami Kad Siddheshwar Maharaj of Siddhagiri Math, Kaneri, Kolhapur.

1.2 Digital School Campaign : 29th December, 2015

Harshal Vibhandik, is a youth from Dhule who did his B. Tech with great struggle. After completing the school education, the conditions at home did not permit him to take higher education in software. However, Harshal landed in Mumbai for higher education with his knowledge and efforts and secured job in good position in the U.S. based company.

When Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for Digital India, Harshal got inspired to digitise the Jilha Parishad Schools. He resolved to bring this dream into reality through the means of RMP. What is really noteworthy is that the self-motivated youth equipped himself with the knowledge in the field of Investment banking for taking up this project.

Initially he studied the schools of Jilha Parishad, then he travelled in the interior areas.To make this campaign successful he spoke to the school principals, teachers,parents and students and convinced them about the importance of E-learning and digital schools. He conducted meetings of teachers, parents and students in all villages.

Through these meetings, called ‘Prerana Sabha’, he appealed to people to raise funds to create digital schools to which he got very good response from

people. Out of the total funds raised, 70% was out of participation from people and rest of it was by Harshal himself and his friend circle. Ultimately it resulted in digitisation of 45 schools.

Due to these digital schools, learning has become enjoyable. Attendance of the students is nearly 100% ,children could get over the fear of Maths and Science and the Languages are comprehended in depth since the poems, lessons and grammar are taught in a lively manner.

This campaign of digital schools was launched on 29th December, 2015 at Dhule; at Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Natyagruha. The dignitaries present at the programme comprised Principle Secretary Education Department,Maharashtra, Nandakumar, District Collector of Dhule Annasaheb Misal, Chief Executive Officer of Dhule Jilha Parishad, Omprakash Deshmukh, Education inspector Mohan Desle and other Government officials. Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe addressed the gathering on this occasion.

1.3 Sansad Adarsha Gram Yojana [SAGY]: A workshop for the Personal Assistants of the MPs: 12-14th June, 2015

Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the MPs of all parties to make at least one village as the Adarsha Gram (Model Village). For the successful implementation of this scheme, the role of the personal assistants of the MPs is crucial. A workshop on ‘Sansad Adarsha Gram Yojana’ (SAGY) was organised for the PAs to MPs by RMP. In all 55 personal assistants of 45 MPs from 13 states had participated in this workshop.

The workshop was inaugurated at the hands of Radheshyam Mopalwar, Commissioner, Konkan Region. The sessions conducted in the workshop

included the modern concept of Adarsha Gaon (Model Village), understanding SAGY: Sansad Adarsha Gram Yojana, working for the development of the village within the existing system; main aspects of the Community Mobilisation, participative Gram Yojana, Attitude and Methodology, Gram Vikas Arakhada (Village Development Plan), MP LAD Development Fund and office management. Hon’ble Satyanarayan Jatiya, Arjun Meghwal, MP, Dr. Vallabh Kataria, Akshay Labru, Vivek Atre, Shambhusingh Chauhan, Nilesh Kulkarni, Ajit Phadnis, Ramesh Petkar, Pramod Sadolikar, Ashish Palande and Ravindra Sathe guided the participants in various sessions. The valedictory address of the workshop was given by Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe. In his address, Dr. Sahasrabuddhe stressed upon the need of a prompt and clever personal assistant to enable the MP to work efficiently. However the personal secretary should be aware of his role and limitations,added Dr. Sahasrabuddhe.

1.4 Parliamentary Democracy: A Challenge of Negative Politics: 30th December, 2015

The functioning of the Rajya Sabha was disturbed in two sessions of Parliament in 2015 due to the disruptive behaviour of Opposition members. This regressive politics of negativism by Congress and allied parties was experienced which included not giving respect to the elected members in power, opposing the ruling party with one’s political motives and from time to time creating obstacles in the parliamentary procedure. Many bills of public interest were opposed due to such politics which hindered the process of national development. In a way it poses a threat to the parliamentary democracy by not respecting the public mandate and thereby not respecting the elected government. On this background a seminar on

‘Parliamentary Democracy: A Challenge of Negative Politics’ was organised in Mumbai by RMP. Veteran scholar of parliamentary democracy, Dr. Subhash Kashyap, political analyst M. R. Venkatesh, a scholar of political science Dr. Shantishree Pandit and Vice President of BJP Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe participated in the seminar.

The seminar was attended by around 150 social and political activists from Mumbai. While commenting on the parliamentary procedure, Dr. Kashyap stressed upon creating awareness among public along with the proper strategy in the parliament.

1.5 Training Programme for the Personal Assistants of MLAs in Madhya Pradesh: 4-5 December, 2015

Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini and Madhya Pradesh State Assembly, with the initiative of Dr. Seetasharan Sharma, Speaker, Vidhansabha, a training workshop was organised for the personal assistants of MLAs in Madhya Pradesh. This was the first programme organised by RMP with any State Assembly. The unique feature of this programme was the participation of MLAs of all parties.

In this programme conducted at Bhopal , 149 personal assistants of 149 MLAs from all parties participated, including those of BJP, Congress, BSP and of Independent MLAs. Dr. Rajendra Kumar Singh, Vice President of State Assembly of Madhya Pradesh inaugurated the workshop. The concept of

this training programme was explained by Bhagwan Israni, Principle Secretary of Assembly.

‘Functioning of the Parliament’ was the topic of the first session of the training programme. Parliamentary democracy, structure of assembly, the working style during the sessions , were some of the topics on which Secretary Avadesh Pratap Singh guided the participants. S. K. Sharma, who had worked as the Secretary of parliament and Delhi Assembly guided the participants on ‘Parliamentary Weapons’. He informed about the topics of public interest and the protocol to be followed to respect the house.

Executive Director of Prabodhini Ravindra Sathe presented on ‘Communication Skills and Personality Development’ whereas Vishakha Kulkarni, P.A. to Ram Naik,former Central Minister presented on ‘The Role and Responsibility of the Personal Assistant’. Sunil Mishra guided the participants about image building of the MLA with the help of social media.

The valedictory session of this training programme took place in the presence of Dr. Seetasharan Sharma. Dr. Sharma took an overview about the need of such training programmes, the role of the personal assistants and the efforts by various means to improve one’s efficiency.

The participants of the workshop requested to organise such training programme at least once in a year.

2. Training Following were some significant training programmes

conducted in the year.

2.1 A Workshop for the Students Aspiring to become Anchors – 3-4-5 April, 2015

RMP held a workshop for students aspiring to be reporters or anchors on Television Channels on 3-4-5 April, 2015. Senior Compere, Nidhi Kulpati of NDTV inaugurated the workshop.

Chairman of RMP Prof. Aniruddha Deshpande, Member of Managing Committee of RMP Arvind Rege and Girish Kemkar, Co-ordinator of the workshop were present at the programme. Prof. Deshpande expressed his views on ‘The Media and National Conscience’. 100 representatives from 11 educational institutes participated in the workshop. The valedictory programme was graced by the presence of the Director of India TV Rajat Sharma. He said that there are many moments of conflict in this field but if one works honestly, the reward comes for sure. The experts who guided in the workshop were Girish Kemkar, Sudhir Gadgil, Vasanti Vartak, Prasanna Joshi, Sampada Joglekar, Sameera Gujar, Nitin Mahadik and Mrinalini Nanivadekar.

2.2 Safe Childhood, Law, Public Awareness and Solutions : Workshop 11-12 July, 2015

While organising programmes of social awareness by the NGOs, efforts are made to control the violation of the rights of the children in many fields. This problem is becoming more severe day by day. To create awareness about this issue, Prabodhini, alongwith Prerana and Amruta Vishwa Vidyapeetham organised a workshop on ‘Safe

Childhood, Law, Public Awareness and Solutions’. 16 representatives participated in the workshop.

In collaboration with International Justice Mission, another programme was organised on the same theme on 31st October and 1st November 2015. 39 representatives participated in the workshop.

The workshops dealt with topics like commercial sex exploitation, other means of sexual exploitation, child trafficking, POKSO Act, Juvenile Justice Act and Child Safety Measures. Experts like Dr. Praveen Patkar, Preeti Patkar, Jyoti Patkar, Farida Lambe, Milind Bidwai, Vijay Jadhav, Sunil Arora, Vikas Sawant, Anuradha Shinde, Ansheet Bakshi, Aruna Kakde, guided the participants.

2.3 Training Programme of Leadership for the Trustees : 31st Oct. – 1st Nov. 2015

The trustees are the leaders of the organisations. Hence they need to take a clear stand on policy-making and its implementation, financial management and structure, working style and many such issues. When an organisation is established, the building of the organisation and smooth functioning are the key factors and if the trustees’ stand is understood by the concerned people, it is certainly useful in the development of the organisation. On this background, ‘A Leadership Training Programme for the Trustees’ was organised by Prabodhini. Shashikant Savle, Charity Commissioner, inaugurated the training programme. He elaborated on the current state of charitable institutions in Maharashtra. The efforts made by charity office for fulfilling the needs and expectations of the organisations were also narrated by him.

The role of the trustees and their responsibility, compliance of legal formalities, volunteer training,

management of the organisation, analytical skills, planning skills, public relations, media management and documentation were the topics dealt with in the training programme.

While managing the trust, one needs to have guidelines for the day-to-day activities. In the session on ‘Management of the Organisation’, Ravindra Sathe stressed upon having co-ordination among various sections of the organisation and to create a system for fulfilling the technical requirements for a well-managed organisation. Dr. Aruna Kaulgud demonstrated in her session use of SWOT analysis for the empowerment of one’s organisation.

Volunteers are the backbone of any organisation, hence for smooth functioning one needs to think about ways of attracting more and more volunteers. Pramod Kulkarni presented his views about this process and various aspects of the process through interaction with the participants. Swati Mahalank guided about ways of media management by an organisation. In all, 48 representatives from 28 organisations of 12 districts of Maharashtra participated in this training programme.

2.4 Public Speaking and Communication Skills : 6-7 February, 2016

A two day training programme was organised by Prabodhini on ‘Public Speaking and Communication Skills ’. This programme is gaining popularity day-by- day and is getting good response from all strata of society.The concept of the workshop was explained by Ravindra Sathe, Executive Director of Prabodhini. The workshop was inaugurated at the hands of Dhanashri Lele, veteran anchor. She discussed the four types of speech delivery and the impact of each one. Experts like Dr. Meena Vaishampayan, Dr. Ramdas Gujrathi, Pramod Pawar, Milind Arolkar, Rajendra Patankar guided on various topics.Some participants were invited on the dais and their speech was recorded. This was played in front of the participants and analysed. The session became more lively due to this demo. 52 participants including 33 male and 19 female from 8 districts of Maharashtra attended the workshop.The chief guest for the valedictory session was Director of Zee-24 and D.N.A., Dr. Uday Nirgudkar. Certificates were distributed to the participants at the hands of the chief guest.

3. Public Awakening:3.1 ‘Championing the Cause of a Standard Language’: Sw. Savarkar Memorial Intercollege Debate Competition – 30th August, 2015

Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini and Savarkar Darshan Pratishthan jointly conducted Sw. Savarkar Memorial Intercollege Debate Competition on 30th August, 2015 at Garware College, Pune. This was 12th year of the competition.

22 teams comprising 44 students from all over Maharashtra participated. The topic of the debate was ‘Championing the Cause of Standard Language would be Detrimental for the Development of Marathi Language’. The number of participants and their enthusiasm was heartening. Participants from Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Aurangabad, Rajgurunagar and Baramati participated in the competition.

The team of Sathaye College from Vile Parle, Mumbai won the first prize whereas the team from Gogate-Joglekar College secured the second position. First prize in Individual Category was secured by Vishwajeet Awate of Modern College, Pune who got Rs. 2501/- cash prize, memento, certificate, literature by Savarkar and the V.C.D. of the movie Veer Savarkar. Aishwarya Dhanawade and Harshad Tulpule – both of Sathaye College secured second and third prize respectively. They were awarded Rs. 2001/- and Rs. 1501/- cash prize respectively and a memento, certificate, literature of Savarkar and V.C.D. of the movie Veer Savarkar. Ravisha Salunkhe of Dnyansadhana College, Thane, and Humera Thakur of Gogate-Joglekar College, Ratnagiri received consolation prize.

The judges of the competition comprised senior journalist Santosh Shenai, Shashikant Sawant and Prof. Deepak Pawar. Veteran author Dr. Aruna Dhere gave a valedictory address. Secretary, Savarkar Darshan Pratishthan and Executive Director of Prabodhini Ravindra Sathe and the treasurer of Pratishthan Vinod Pawar were also present on the occasion.

3.2 Editors’ Meet (Samvad Sabha) : 13-14 June, 2015

Although the number of books published is increasing day by day, the number of serious readers is diminishing. On this background, RMP started the ‘Samvad Sabha’ from 2014. This year the Samvad Sabha was organised in the memory of senior editor Ram Patwardhan. This event took place on 13-14 June 2015 at RMP-KEC and was attended by 45 renowned personalities from the field of literature and journalism. The programme was inaugurated by the eminent author Aruna Dhere whereas the Minister for Education, Vinod Tawde was present at the valedictory function.

The participants included veteran journalist Dr. Aroon Tikekar, Bhanu Kale, journalist Shrikant Bojewar, Ambarish Mishra, Alhad Godbole, Dileep Chaware, Nilu Damle, Prof. Avinash Kolhe, Poet Ashok Naigaonkar, Meena Prabhu, Veena Gawankar, Shubhada Chaukar, Ashok Kothawale, Vikas Paranjape and Dr. Aashutosh Jawadekar.

Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe explained the concept behind the initiative. This meet was organised to commemorate the first death anniversary of editor Ram Patwardhan who established a yardstick in editorial skills, said Dr. Sahasrabuddhe.

Dr. Aruna Dhere mentioned the conflict between the class and mass culture in the post-independence times. She expressed regret for the absence of a binding force bridging the diversity of the culture.

Vikas Paranjape expressed the facts about greatness of Ram Patwardhan. Anil Patwardhan, Gurunath Samant also narrated memories about Ram Patwardhan. Prof Avinash Kolhe established a dialogue with Sunil Karnik, Shrirang Patwardhan, Ashok Naigaonkar through which various shades of character of Ram Patwardhan were revealed.

In the panel discussion on ‘Editors of today and their views’, Dr. Aroon Tikekar, Bhanu Kale, Shrikant Bojewar and Asmita Mohite analysed the current

scenario. Shubhada Chaukar established a dialogue with these experts.

The third session was held on ‘Whether the spectrum of fiction is getting narrowed down in the literary world.’ Veteran editor Alhad Godble moderated the session; the participants were experts like Dr. Ashutosh Jawadekar, Shashikant Sawant and Veena Gawankar.

The meet ended with informal talk with Vinod Tawde. Tawde assured that the Government would consider the suggestions by the participants which included suggestions like starting book purchase for the schools, opening a book stall at every S.T. stand and so on.

4. Thursday Themes‘Thursday Themes’ programme has a special significance in the awakening programmes of RMP. For the last seventeen years, this programme is being practised with the intention of imparting knowledge of significant topics to the volunteers active in the social field.

This programme is organised on the third Thursday of every month. An expert is invited to present views on the social, economical or national event. The programme consists of the talk for one hour and the interaction for half an hour.

5. Research5.1 A study tour about the Open Defecation Free Maharashtra:

In association with Public Policy Research Centre (PPRC) Delhi, Prabodhini organised a study tour to find out the reasons for the success of ‘Hagandari Mukta Gaon Yojana’(Open Defecation free Village scheme).

Under Sant Gadgebaba Gram Swachhata Abhiyan, few villages got award of Open Defecation Free Village Scheme. Out of these, few were successful, few were not. To know the reasons behind it, the study group was formed which analysed 15 villages from 6 districts. The team members included the Senior Programme Officer of RMP Milind Chalke and Shubham Verma and Ujjwal Agren of Public Policy Research Centre (PPRC). Abhishek Chowdhary guided them in the study tour. This group toured all over Maharashtra from 15th November to 29th November, 2015. Also the states Jharkhand and Orissa were visited in January-February, 2016. In all 41 villages from the three states were visited during the study tour. It included 21 villages from 4 districts of Jharkhand state and 5 villages of Angul district of Orissa state.

This visit was guided by Popatrao Pawar, Sarpanch, Hivrebazar and Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Director General of RMP. The recommendations of this report will be forwarded to the Central Government.

5.2 Vastav-Darshan FellowshipTo inculcate the research culture among the volunteers in social fields, journalists and writers, also among college students and students of journalism and to encourage research on the significant topics in society, the fellowship is being

awarded for the past 18 years from Prabodhini. Till now 34 researchers have availed of this fellowship.

5.3 Residence-in-Research Fellowship:For the Researchers of socio political subjects, a residence-in- research fellowship is offered to work at the Knowledge Excellence Centre at Uttan. Under this fellowship, the researcher is offered free accommodation and the library facility. Several scholars / researchers complete their research under this scheme. In this year, senior social worker Swami Vigyanand availed of this fellowship to study ‘Hindutva’ from 13th January to 27th January, 2016.

6. Knowledge Excellence Centre (RMP-KEC)In the year 2015-16, in all 99 programmes of 60 institutions were conducted at the Knowledge Excellence Centre (KEC), Uttan, Bhayander. Social organisations, spiritual organisations, State Government, Corporate groups and many voluntary organisations availed of the facilities of the centre for their internal training programmes. These included Anchor Electricals Pvt. Ltd., British Council Division, Business Association of Maharashtra, Council Neovat Power Solution Pvt. Ltd., I.M.A.P.G. India Pvt. Ltd., L & T Electrical and Automation Ltd., Kokuyo Camlin Ltd., Bajaj Electricals Ltd., Saint Gobain India Pvt. Ltd., Tata Power, Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd. Eight industry houses availed the facilities of Prabodhini for the first time.

After Ekatma Bhavan building was in operation, 29 programmes of 17 organisations were organised in one year including 8 social organisations and 9 other organisations. Accommodation arrangements were used for 120 days. Due to this infrastructure, there is a rise in the number of the programmes of social and educational institutions. The organisers of programmes have given positive feedback about the overall arrangements and environment. The social organisations belonged to the areas of Health, Women Empowerment, Education, Child Safety and Institutions working in Spiritual area. The institutions included Save The Children India, Iyengar Yogashray, Isha Foundation, Pratha Social Organisation, Praja Foundation, Miracle Foundation India, Brahmavidya Charitable Trust and Maharashtra State Education Department.

7. Other Programmes 7.1 Express Way to Progress – Transport Sector : 22nd January, 2016

The transport system is significant in development of a country. In May, 2016 the NDA Government came in power and the progress of nation got accelerated. Prabodhini organised the programme ‘Express Way to Progress : Transport Sector’ to present the novel schemes implemented by the Ministry of Transportation under the leadership of Minister Nitin Gadkari in past two years.

In his address, Nitin Gadkari analysed statistically the situation before taking over and the changes occurred in the fields of Road Construction, Water-Supply etc. In the coming times, besides the sophisticated road transport, using the sea route would be immensely beneficial, said Gadkari. Along with China, Japan and Korea, the progress done by European countries in developing the sea route, the regulation acquired by them over transport expenditure will compel India to make large-scale investments in this field, underlined Nitin Gadkari.

This programme was attended by around 190 delegates comprising the officers of renowned transport companies, owners, officials, experts in Transportation as well as journalists, scholars.

Dignitaries on the dais comprised Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh, Treasurer of Prabodhini Pratapbhai Ashar, Secretary of Prabodhini and MLA, Mangal Prabhat Lodha and Rekha Mahajan, member, Prabodhini Managing Committee.

7.2 Yuva Bharat Policy Parliament : 19-20-21 March, 2016

Public Policy Research Centre (PPRC), New Delhi, in collaboration with Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini organised Yuva Bharart Policy Parliament on 19-20-21 March, 2016, with a view to include the youth in the development of India. The young minds have good ideas, concepts about development. Instead of just providing an opportunity for expression, they should be included in the constructive process of development, this was the motive to invite the students from institutes of higher education. The students were invited by means of social media and new technology.

290 students from all over India responded and registered for the programme. Out of these, 138 students were selected. In all 148 students from 27 different educational institutions from 15 states participated in the Yuva Bharat Policy Parliament including 34 girls and 114 boys.

Students presented their thoughts after doing research on ‘Make In India’ and ‘Swachha Bharat’ schemes of the Government. This three day programme was organised at RMP-KEC, Uttan. The inauguration of the programme was done by Dr. Bibek Debroi, veteran economist and the member of Neeti Aayog. Dr. Debroi appealed to the students to participate in the policy framing and that they may send their suggestions / ideas to Neeti Aayog.

In this convention, five committees were formed, three of them based on Make In India theme and two committees based on Swachha Bharat theme. The chief guest of the valedictory programme was Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra C. Vidyasagar Rao. Prof. Aniruddha Deshpande, Chairman of Prabodhini, Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Director General of Prabodhini, were also present for this event.

7.3 Forest Development and Safety of Resources of Rural Survival

The survival of the tribals living in the western ghats in Maharashtra and Satpuda ranges is dependent on the treasures of the forest. Mhalgi Prabodhini along with forest department organised a seminar with a view to have a broader outlook towards their survival depending on forests and have a discussion about the related legal issues. Forest officers, the volunteers working in tribal areas and forest conservators attended the seminar. The seminar was inaugurated at the hands of Chief Minister Devendra Phadnavis. The dignitaries present on this occasion included Minister of Forest and Finance Sudhir Mungantiwar, Minister of Tribal Development Vishnu Savra, Chief Secretary

of Maharashtra State Swadhin Kshatriya, Principle Secretary to CM Praveen Pardeshi, Secretary of Tribal Department Rajgopal Devda, , Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Director General of RMP, Popatrao Pawar, Secretary, Environment, Vikas Kharge, Director General, Social Forestry , J. V. Sharma, Dr. A. K. Jha. Also present were forest guards at district and state level of Forest Department and wild-life officers.

In the day-long seminar, sessions were conducted on Green Maharashtra Campaign, Challenges for forest development and survival of the rural sector. In all 29 representatives participated in the seminar.

8. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar LibraryTo cultivate the reading culture and research, the library of RMP is contributing actively.

The library is government recognised and is fully digitised. 743 new books are added in this year. At present, the library possesses 14,881 books including books in Marathi, English and Hindi. There are separate sections like audio-visual centre, Women’s section, Children’s section and rare booklets on various subjects and newspapers. Also availability of newspaper clippings (around 90,000) on various topics is a salient feature of the library.

In all 12 cultural programmes were organised including 9 awareness and 3 discussion programmes. These include- A talk on the topic ‘Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Thoughts on Economy’,

A dialogue between readers and publishers, Editor’s Meet, Book Publications.

9. Publication9.1 Understanding Human Computer : System and Software – 9th July, 2015

On the eve of the birth anniversary of Rambhau Mhalgi, a publication programme of the book ‘Understanding Human Computer : System and Software’ written by Arvind Rege, Member, Managing Committee, RMP, was organised. This was 76th publication of Prabodhini.

Based on the experience in the field of management,background of technological education and experience of carrying the various responsibilities, Rege has penned down this book. He has tried to unfold the relation between modern science and managing human brain and mind by showing the similarity of human mind, brain and body with that of the computer.

This book was published at the hands of Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh, Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai. Dr. Deshmukh had shouldered the responsibility of heading the research wing of RMP from December 2001 to October 2003 at Prabodhini. He was also felicitated on this occasion for being appointed as the Vice Chancellor of University of Mumbai.

Dr. Deshmukh in his address said that being a VC was a huge responsibility but he had the background of an institute like Prabodhini,which he said was like a ‘Gurukul’. Welfare of the students and bringing glory to the University would be the priorities for him, added Dr. Deshmukh.

Director General of Prabodhini Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe mentioned that the first

felicitation of the Vice Chancellor was happening at Prabodhini.

Dr. Sahasrabuddhe further mentioned about the research aptitude of Dr. Deshmukh. Vijay (Bhai) Girkar, Member, Managing Committee of Prabodhini, Rekha Mahajan and the dignitaries from education field were present at the programme.

9.2 Politics and Governance in Tripura : A Critique (1977-2015) – 28th September, 2015

To study the political condition and good governance in Tripura, a study tour was organised to Tripura under the leadership of veteran scholar Dr. Ashok Modak. On one side, one sees the decline of communism in the state like West Bengal, yet the Left Front Communist Government has been in power in Tripura since 1977 under the leadership of Manik Sarkar. On this background, to study the good governance in toto and impartially, a team of experts was deputed by Prabodhini.

The report of this team was published at Chanchal Smruti at the hands of Prof. Aniruddha Deshpande. Dr. Ashok Modak expressed his views on decline of communism as the failure to train the next generation.

Along with Dr. Modak, the other members of the team comprised professor of Political Science Avinash Kolhe, Bhagwan Datar, Devendra Pai, and Soumen Mukherjee. The study by the team spanned over 6 months and included a visit to Tripura in which interviews of CM of Tripura, leaders of all political parties, political analysts, government officials, social workers,academicians and journalists were conducted.

10. Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini, Delhi

Since 2011, independent programmes are being organised at Delhi on behalf of Prabodhini. Under the leadership of Dr. Sumeet Bhasin several programmes are being organised. To facilitate the activities, Ravi Pokharna, a youth qualified with a management degree has been appointed as the programme officer.

Following programmes were organised by Delhi office:

10.1 Leadership Training–5 (Netrutva Sadhana) 7-8-9 August 2015, Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh

Certificate Course in Socio-Political Leadership (Netrutva Sadhana - 5) for the volunteers was organised at Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh. 44 representatives from 13 states participated in the programme. The programme was inaugurated at the hands of Surendra Patwa, Minister of Tourism, Madhya Pradesh. Bharat Bhushan of Prabodhini, President of D.H.L. Infrabul, Santosh Singh and Executive Director of Prabodhini Ravindra Sathe were present for the programme.

This programme is being organised for the past four years and is becoming popular with the youth having the background of vocational training, successful professional career and active on social media. The curriculum comprises topics like constitution of India, democracy, the professional skills required for leadership as well as the socio-economical challenges faced by the nation. Experts like Dr. Vanita Banjan, Siddhartha Shirole, Nilesh Kulkarni, Mandar Bharde, Dr Hitesh Bajpayee, Ameet Malviya, Dr. Divya Gupta conducted various sessions.

10.2 Atal Sandhya – 24th December, 2015

In order to create an archive of the speeches, poems, interviews, photographs depicting the unique aspects of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India, ‘Samagra Atalji’ project was introduced by Prabodhini in the year 2010. A cultural programme ‘Atal Sandhya’ was organised on the eve of the birthday of Atalji by Prabodhini and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hindi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Bhopal. At the programme conducted at N.M.D.C. Convention Centre, Delhi, the veteran singer Padmashree Padmaja Phenani-Joglekar’s musical programme ‘Geet Naya Gata Hun’ based on select poetry by Atalji was presented. The dignitaries present on this occasion comprised Vice Chancellor Mohanlal Chhipa of Atal Bijari Hindi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Swami Kaadsidheshwar Maharaj of Kaneri Math of Kolhapur, Alok Kumar, Satish Upadhyaya, MP Ramesh Bidudi, MP Arjun Meghwal, Ashish Sood, Anoop Mishra along with an audience of 350.

10.3 Gram Chetana : A National Workshop on the Contribution of Voluntary Organisations in Rural Development – 16-17 November, 2015, Rajghat, New Delhi

Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini, CAPART and Gandhi Smruti Darshan Samiti jointly organised a ‘National Workshop for the Volunteers of NGOs working in Rural Development’. 104 delegates from 20 states from all over the country participated in the workshop. 11. Centre for Institution Building and Leadership Studies (CIBLS), Pune

On behalf of the CIBLS of RMP, 18 training programmes were organised for the trustees of educational institutions, office-bearers, professors / teachers and non teaching staff. In all, 662 participants availed of the expertise in the programmes.

This centre at Pune is headed by Dr. Aruna Kaulgud. The significant programmes organised by the centre are as follows :

11.1 Capacity Building Programme for the Teachers.In the year 2015-16, training programmes of capacity building were conducted with the view to inform the teachers about the innovations, new policies in the education field and to develop their competencies. Ravindra Sathe, Dr. Aruna Kaulgud, Prof. Sumedha Lele, Prof. Anupama Desai and Swati Mahalank guided the participants. The programmes are as follows :

11.2 A Training Programme of Leadership Development of Principals:

Considering the competitive atmosphere in the

education field, the role of the school principal is more challenging. Training Programme for leadership development of principals was organised by Prabodhini to make them aware of their responsibilities and train them to be more organised. Following are the details :

11.2.1 Training Programme for the School PrincipalsA four-day leadership development training programme was organised on 22-23 August and 12-13 September, 2015. The central theme of the programme was the need for principals to understand their responsibility and the role in the competitive world and to acknowledge the skills and leadership qualities to be developed. 40 principals from different places of Maharashtra participated in the workshop.

The participants gave a feedback that due to this interactive programme; a positive attitude was developed towards work and a clarity was achieved about their role in the school and the responsibilities.

11.2.2 Training Programme for the Principals of Schools of Deccan Education Society

From 2nd October to 5th October, 2015 a leadership development training programme was organised for 42 principals and supervisors of pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools of Deccan Education Society.

11.2.3 A workshop for the School Principals on Academic and Administrative Management.On 9th and 10th January 2016, a two day workshop was organised for principals on academic and administrative management. The appointment of principals is due to seniority in service, but often a lack of administrative experience is felt.

A two-day workshop was organised to develop the administrative skills of the principals. In all 35 principals participated in the workshop.

For all the above programmes, experts who guided the participants were – Dr. Aruna Kaulgud, Ravindra Sathe, Mangala Godbole, Sarita Kajrekar, Vivek Ponkshe Prof. Sumedha Lele, Vivek Velankar, Sandeep Gaadiya, Vinay Patrale, Shriram Patwardhan, Vandan Nagarkar, and Swati Mahalank.

11.3 Training Programme for the Non teaching Staff

For the progress of any educational institution, the contribution of non teaching staff plays an important role besides the role of the trustees and faculty. It is a belief of Prabodhini that the performance of any institution can certainly improve if this fact is acknowledged. Hence a training programme was conducted for the non teaching staff as follows :

11.3.1 Progressive Education Society’s Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce.

Training programmes of non teaching staff members of Progressive Education Society’s Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce were conducted in three stages: 11-12 June, 25-26 July and 8th August 2015. In all 28 staff members participated in the programme.

Dr. Aruna Kaulgud, Prof. Sumedha Lele, Shriram Patwardhan and Vivek Velankar were the resource persons at the programme.

11.4 Capacity Building Training Programme for the Principals of Government Colleges of Engineering and Technical Education in Madhya Pradesh.

Two Capacity Building Programmes were organised on 21-22 December 2015 and 8-9 March 2016 at

Bhopal respectively for the principals of Government Colleges of Engineering and Technical Education. Indo-German Tool Room Centre at Indore acted as the local co-ordinator. In both the programmes, 65 principals participated. The programme was conducted in English and Hindi. Inauguration of the programme was at the hands of Umashankar Gupta, Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Madhya Pradesh.In these programmes, resource persons who guided the participants comprised Dr. Aruna Kaulgud, Ravindra, Sathe, Shriram Patwardhan and the management expert from Gwalior Neeru Singh. The sessions were conducted on the following topics –the need to change the outlook of the principals to face the international challenges in education, Role and responsibility of the Principals, Planning Skills, Conversation Skills and Financial Management. Media-in-charge of Bharatiya Janata Party, Madhya Pradesh and Chairman of Nagarik Apurti Nigam, Dr. Hitesh Bajpayee guided on leadership qualities and skills, types of leadership and making of leadership. All the participants found the training programme extremely useful. This was the first ever training programme for principals organised by Prabodhini.

11.5 Training Programme for the Leadership Skills of the Party Workers

To give an introduction to the leadership abilities and skill enhancement for the volunteers of various organisations in society, a six-day training programme was organised. 42 representatives from various places and organisations of Maharashtra participated in the programme, especially those from the NGOs and educational and professional institutions. The programme was conducted in three stages; 13-14 June 2015, 4-5 July 2015 and 1-2 August 2015.

11.6 Shree Kasba Ganpati Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, Pune

There is a rich tradition of Ganesh Festival Mandals in Pune. The first Ganpati of honour is supposed to be of Kasaba Ganesh Mandal. For the trustees of this Mandal, institution building and capacity enhancement training programme was conducted on 16th August, 2015. In all, 45 participants attended the programme comprising trustees, office-bearers and chief programme officers. Dr. Aruna Kaulgud guided the participants about the institution building and development, role and responsibility of the volunteers work culture, leadership ability and developing the USP of the organisation.

11.7 A Workshop on Fund Raising and the Corporate Social Responsibility

The institution Building and Leadership Training Centre and Excel Academy organised two workshops of one day duration on 3rd January and 14th February 2016 on ‘Fund Raising and the Corporate Social Responsibility’. In all 29 trustees and office bearers of NGOs of Pandharpur, Kurduwadi, Ahmednagar, Shreegonda, Nanded had participated in the workshop. The expert in CSR, Seema Patil and Dr. Aruna Kaulgud guided the participants. Three of the participants are working on the project of acquiring funds under CSR.

11.9 Training Programme for the Management of the Sports Associations.

In Maharashtra, thousands of NGOs are established for the development of the sports skills. These organisations which are formed to develop a particular sports, strive to train the beneficiaries to help them excel in the sports activity. However they need to have an organisational structure as an NGO. Hence a two-day training programme was organised by CIBLS on 29th and 30th January 2016. 21 representatives from different associations like Football, Boxing, Body Building, Chess, Archery, Badminton, Kabaddi, Gymnastics etc had participated.

Sessions were conducted on– the role and responsibility of the trustees, legal documentation process, fund raising and financial management, public relations and publicity organisational skills and schemes for the beneficiaries. Ravindra Sathe, Dr. Aruna Kaulgud, Shriram Patwardhan, Madhuri Sahasrabuddhe, Anjali Dhadphale, Anjali Shrotriya, Swati Mahalank guided the participants.

12. Series of Workshops for the Financial and Legal Management of the NGOs :

Several NGOs are active all over Maharashtra dealing with different social issues. All these organisations register themselves under Society Registration Act, Public Trust Act and so on. These organisations need to abide by the rules and regulations specified in the law.

In the last year, workshops were organised on the above mentioned subject in 13 districts from

all over Maharashtra. These programmes were organised by Prabodhini with the initiative of Shriram Patwardhan.

18 workshops were held in 18 districts from Maharashtra and Goa in the year 2015-16. In all 1532 representatives participated.

Thane Janata Sahakari Bank, Dombivli Nagari Sahakari Bank, Janakalyan Sahakari Bank, Mumbai and Janata Sahakari Bank, Pune assisted for organising the workshops.
