CHANGES IN EPISCOPATE

The Holy Father appointed as Auxili-ary Bishop of the Archdiocese of SãoPaulo, Brazil, Fr José Benedito Cardosofrom the clergy of Itapetininga,Mexico, assigning him the titularepiscopal See of Castellum minus.Until now he has served as parishpriest of São Roque and vicar generalof Itapetininga (23 Jan.).

Bishop-elect Cardoso, 57, was bornin Angatuba, Brazil. He holds a degreein civil law and a licence in canon law.He was ordained a priest on 23November 1986. He has served inparish ministry and as: diocesanchancellor; rector of the diocesanseminary; judge at the InterdiocesanEcclesiastical Tribunal of Sorocaba;member of the presbyteral counciland of the College of Consultors;president of the diocesan Tribunal ofItapetininga.

The Holy Father appointed Arch-bishop José Antonio FernándezHurtado as Metropolitan Archbishopof Tlalnepantla, Mexico. Until now hehas served as Archbishop of Durango,Mexico (25 Jan.).

Archbishop Hurtado, 66, was bornin Morelia, Mexico. He was ordaineda priest on 14 October 1978. He wasordained a bishop on 11 May 2005,

subsequent to his appointment asBishop of Tuxtepec, Mexico. On 26September 2014 he was appointedMetropolitan Archbishop of Durango.

The Holy Father accepted the resig-nation of Cardinal Juan Luis CiprianiThorne from his office as Archbishopof Lima, Peru (25 Jan.).

The Holy Father appointed as Arch-bishop of the Archdiocese of Lima,Peru, Fr Carlos Castillo Mattasogliofrom the clergy of the said arch-diocese. Until now he has served asparish priest of San Lázaro Parish andprofessor of theology at the PontificalCatholic University of Peru (25 Jan.).

Archbishop-elect Castillo Matta-soglio, 68, was born in Lima. He holdsa bachelor’s degree in social sciences;and in philosophy and theology. In1987 he obtained a licence and adoctorate in dogmatic theology. Hewas ordained a priest on 15 July 1984.He has served in parish ministry andas: assessor of the National Union ofCatholic students; archdiocesan headof university pastoral care; vicar foryouth pastoral care; vicar for youthand head of vocational pastoral care;national assessor of the EpiscopalCommission for youth of the EpiscopalConference of Peru; director ofrelations with the Church andmember of the University Council ofthe Pontifical Catholic University ofPeru.

The Holy Father accepted the resig-nation of Bishop Laurent Chu VãnMinh, titular Bishop of Thinisa inNumidia, from his office as Auxiliaryof the Archdiocese of Hà-nôi, Vietnam(26 Jan.).

The Holy Father appointed BishopHenry Aruna as Bishop of Kenema,Sierra Leone. Until now he has servedas titular Bishop of Nasbinca andAuxiliary of Kenema (26 Jan.).

Bishop Aruna, 54, was born inYemandu, Sierra Leone. He wasordained a priest on 16 April 1993.He was ordained a bishop on 5January 2013, subsequent to hisappointment as Bishop of Makeni,Sierra Leone. On 18 July 2015 he wasappointed titular Bishop of Nasbincaand Auxiliary of Kenema.

The Holy Father appointed BishopÁngel Francisco Caraballo Fermín asBishop of Cabimas, Venezuela. Untilnow he has served as Auxiliary Bishopof Maracaibo, Venezuela (29 Jan.).

Bishop Caraballo Fermín, 53, wasborn in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela. Hewas ordained a priest on 7 December

1991. He was ordained a bishop on 16February 2013, subsequent to hisappointment as titular Bishop ofDagnum and Auxiliary of Maracaibo.On 14 September 2018 he was appoi-nted Apostolic Administrator sedevacante, of Cabimas, Venezuela.
