Recent media reports about the troubles and tribulations of Malay-sia Airlines come as no surprise to the aviation industry. The airline had been facing considerable challenges long be-fore the twin disas-ters of MH370 and MH17. The tragic events of 2014 just escalated the airline’s troubles.

According to a detailed report by Aviation analysts CAPA, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is finally starting to implement a long overdue restruc-turing aimed at restoring profitabil-ity through capacity reductions, job cuts and efficiency improvements. A rebranding is also being consid-ered as the flag carrier transitions to a new company and starts a new chapter.

MAS has been in need of a major overhaul for several years but its predicament became more dire in

2014 due to the MH370 and MH17 incidents, coupled with overcapac-ity in its home market. In its current state, MAS is not a commercially vi-able business.

“We are technically bankrupt, “Christoph Mueller, the airlines re-cently ushered in CEO told a news conference. “The decline of per-formance started long before the tragic events of 2014.”

With the arrival of its new CEO, CAPA reports that MAS is finally moving forward with job cuts

ahead of the delayed transition to a new company, which is now slated to take over from the current ailing company in September this year. Capacity adjustments have started with the recent suspension of

services to Frankfurt, Kochi, Krabi and Kunming.

Government-owned investment firm Khazanah initially unveiled a comprehensive turnaround plan for MAS in August 2014. The plan envisioned slashing about 6,000 jobs, representing about 20% of the workforce, and cutting long-haul

Avolon delivers one B737-8 to Flydubai and one B787-9 to Virgin Atlantic

Avolon (AVOL), the international aircraft leasing company, has delivered one Boeing 737-8 air-craft to Flydubai. This is Avolon’s sixth aircraft on lease to Flydubai. The delivery was financed by Arab Banking Corporation (ABC). The company also announced the delivery of one Boeing 787-9 aircraft to Virgin Atlantic. This delivery is the second of four Boeing 787-9 aircraft scheduled for delivery to Virgin Atlantic by Avolon.

Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines selected by Middle East Airlines

Rolls-Royce has been selected by MEA (Middle East Airlines-Air Liban) to supply Trent 700 en-gines and TotalCare service support for an ad-ditional Airbus A330 aircraft. The airline, which this year celebrates its 70th anniversary has or-dered Rolls-Royce powered aircraft over the last 50 years, dating back to Dart-powered Viscount aircraft. MEA has operated Trent 700 engines since 2003 and they currently power a total of four aircraft.

Jet Midwest Group acquires 13 aircraft from American Airlines

Jet Midwest Group has completed the final of a three-part transaction under which Jet Midwest has acquired a total of thirteen aircraft from American Airlines. Included in the transaction are five Boeing 757-200 aircraft, three Boeing 767 aircraft, and five MD80 aircraft. Jet Midwest has already placed all of the MD80 aircraft and

one of the 767 aircraft. Jet Midwest’s unique business model allows for the remaining 757-200, 767-200 aircraft and RB211 engines to be sold, leased, converted to freighters, or disman-tled for parts sales based on the demands of its customer base worldwide.

FedEx accelerates aircraft retirements

FedEx has permanently retired 15 aircraft and 21 related engines as it continues to rationalize

capacity and modernize its aircraft fleet to more effectively serve FedEx Express customers. The permanent retirement of aircraft and related engines includes: seven MD11 airframes and 12 related engines; three A300 airframes and three related engines; four A310-300 airframes and three related engines; and one MD10-10 airframe and three related engines. The impact of retiring these aircraft, engines and related parts resulted in a non-cash impairment charge of uS$246m recorded in May 2015. FedEx has also adjusted the retirement schedule of an ad-

capacity while increasing focus on regional operations within Asia-Pacific and on partnerships to cover other markets.

In the meantime, Mueller also CEO-designate of the new airline, Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB), assures customers that MAS operations continue as normal. “I assure you our operations are very much business as usual. All MAS flights, schedules, and reservations continue to operate as normal. We remain committed to serving you with our world-class Malaysian hos-pitality, and look forward to welcoming you on board Malaysia Airlines.”

The corporate restructure is an extremely costly but necessary exercise as MAS has just one final chance to rectify decades of problems and chart a sustainable path in an increasingly competitive industry. Despite earlier attempts at improving the airline’s performance, the previous structure lacked transparency and was inefficient, forcing the airline unit to incur higher than average costs for items such as aircraft maintenance. MAS could simply not afford to continue paying above industry norms for goods and services, whether insourced or outsourced.

AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS Sierra Nevada Corporation to collaborate on regional aircraft production in Turkey

328 Support Services GmbH, the Type Certificate holder for the D328, has announced that its parent company, Sierra Nevada Corporation, has signed a Memorandum of understanding (Mou) with the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs & Communications to meet the need of producing the country’s first regional jet as part of its Regional Aircraft Project (“Project”). The first aircraft is expected to be delivered in 2018. The foundation of the Project is to be based around a modernized version of the D328 aircraft. All intellectual property rights were recently acquired as a result of SNC’s recent acquisition of subsidiary company 328 in Germany. “The aircraft will be the first domestically-built passenger aircraft in Turkey,” said SNC Chief Executive Officer Fatih Ozmen. The design of a new high-tech product, dubbed the D628 aircraft series, will start simultaneously with production of the 328 series. While the Pro-ject establishes a world-class aerospace industry infrastructure in Turkey, it will also serve the need for a new 30-seat regional aircraft in the global aviation market. SNC will collaborate with Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A. (STM) on the Project, who will be responsible for upgrading the existing D328 and also manufacturing the aircraft. It will be marketed under the name TRJ328 for the jet version and T328 for the turboprop version.

to be delivered in August 2015, modified in line with Austrian Airlines’ standards and used for training purposes. Close to 200 pilots of Austrian Airlines will be retrained to operate the Embraer aircraft starting in the autumn of this year. The first commercial flight is planned to take place in January 2016. The 17 jets will come from Lufthansa CityLine, which in return will receive

Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen jets from Eurow-ings. The Embraer 195, with 120 seats per air-craft, is considerably bigger than the Fokker planes with 80 resp. 100 seats deployed in this segment. At present, the new jets have an av-erage age of four years (built 2009-2012), com-pared to the average age of about 21 years for the Fokker fleet of Austrian Airlines. As a result,

the replacement of the aircraft will significantly rejuvenate the Austrian Airlines fleet. The list price of an Embraer 195 jet is about uS$52m. However, the most important factor pertaining to aircraft is the ongoing operating costs. The younger airplanes use about 18% less fuel per aircraft seat and this makes the Embraer jets much more environmentally compatible.
