AgainstthebackdropofthegrowingJapanese and ASEAN countries tradingcapacities, ASEAN how accounts for15% of Japan’s trade as compared tothe20%byChina,10%byEUand13%byUSA.TheASEANcountries together, therefore, is the second largest tradingpartnertoJapan.
Notwithstanding the importanceof trade and investments, Japan hasalso attached increasing importance
to people-to-people exchange andeducation. Thus, for instance, stemmingfrom the Look East Policy of Malaysiaof 1982, more than 14000 Malaysianstudents have been sent to Japan forfurther study besides the establishmentof a number of Japanese universitiesbranchesinMalaysiainrecentyears.
Ambassador Nakamura believed itishighlyimportantthata“unifiedASEAN”be the hub of the regional architecture
and,inthatcontext,theASEAN–JapanCommemorative Summit in December2014shoulddirect the futureofASEAN–Japanrelations.

Referring to the achievementsof ASEAN and the regional scenario,AmbassadorByungjaegaveaninteresting
insight which he termed as the “Asianparadox”,andthatiswhiletherehasbeenconsiderable and increasing cooperationamongst the countries in SoutheastAsiaandEastAsia in termsof tradeandinvestments, yet on the political andsecurityarea, thesituationischaracterisedby rivalries.Heattributed thisparadox to“trust deficit” in the region.
