This classic Dizzy Gillespie composition has been recorded by many different jazz
musicians since the earlier recordings by
Dizzy and Charlie Parker. The form is AABA, 32 bars divided into four eight-bar phrases.
The version heard here includes the original bass vamp and interlude to the solo section, although Dizzy
himself experimented with different vamps and tempos throughout his career. The student should compa
different versions of this tune by Dizzy's own groups, as well as those recorded by other artists. The piano
and bass parts provided here resemble those commonly used in small group situations. Vamp figures are
completely notated, but chord symbols and rhythmic accents are used elsewhere. Transcribing theaccompaniments will
provide a valuable study of the interpretation of chord symbols, as well as providing alternate ways of
expressing these chords. Notice the freedom with which Bobby
Watson interprets the written melody. His interpolations in measure four of the A
phrase are similar to the interpolations which Dizzy has played. There are also variations in the interlude.
learning the original
melody thoroughly, the student will be able to better appreciate these spontaneous variations. In this way
original variations which have a clear connection with the tradition of the piece will eventually evolve in a
natural and spontaneous manner.
Bobby often uses a minor pentatonic scale in his solo (root, second, minor third, perfect fifth, major sixth,
d, e, f, a, b ). In measure 9 of his first chorus he plays this scale against the E~7 in the rhythm section, creating tension until the rhythm section arrives at Dm6/9 in measure 10. He often plays in this area of th
tune by decorating the tonic chord
(Dm6/9) instead of implying both E~7 and Dm6/9. For contrast, listen to one of Charlie Parker's versions o
this tune, where both chords are expressed in a more direct manner. Both approaches are valid, and the
student should understand each approach, comparing the sound and effect for future reference. In blues
tunes, for example, sometimes every chord is implied in the solo line, while at other times the soloist may
simply decorate the tonic chord or make
melodies from the tonic blues scale.

Bobby verwendet in seinem Solo after eine
pentatonische Skala in Moll (Grundton,
groBe Sekunde, kleine Terz, reine Quinte, groBe Sexte oder d, e, f, a, b). In Takt 9 seines ersten Chorus'

La version que I'on entend ici inclut I'obstinato (vamp
mineure, quinte juste, sixte majeure so it Re, Mi, Fa, La, Si becarre).
