Asher FischPrincipal Conductor & Artistic Adviser

A renowned conductor in both the operatic and symphonic worlds, Asher Fisch is especially celebrated for his interpretative command of core German and Italian repertoire of the Romantic and post-Romantic era. He conducts a wide variety of repertoire from Gluck to contemporary works by living composers. Asher Fisch took up the position of Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in 2014, and in 2017 extended his contract until the end of 2023. His former posts include Principal Guest Conductor of the Seattle Opera (2007-2013), Music Director of the New Israeli Opera (1998-2008), and Music Director of the Wiener Volksoper (1995-2000).

Highlights of the 2017-18 season include guest engagements with the Milwaukee Symphony, Seoul Philharmonic, Würth Philharmonic, a jubilee concert celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Chorus of the Semperoper Dresden, and a tour to Japan with the Bayerische Staatsoper conducting Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Guest opera engagements include The Flying Dutchman at both Semperoper Dresden and at Bayerische Staatsoper, where he also conducts La traviata and Un ballo in maschera this season. In addition, Asher Fisch and WASO celebrate the orchestra’s 90th anniversary, and will present a concert version of Tristan und Isolde with Stuart Skelton and Eva-Maria Westbroek in the title roles. Fisch recently made debuts with the Sydney Symphony and the New Japan Philharmonic.

Born in Israel, Fisch began his conducting career as Daniel Barenboim’s assistant and kappellmeister at the Berlin Staatsoper. He has built his versatile repertoire at the major opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, and Semperoper Dresden. Fisch is also a regular guest conductor at leading American symphony orchestras including those of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, and Philadelphia. In Europe he has appeared at the Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the Orchestre National de France, among others.

Asher Fisch recently recorded the complete Brahms symphonies with WASO, released in September 2016 on ABC Classics to great acclaim. His recording of Wagner’s Ring Cycle with the Seattle Opera was released on the Avie label in 2014. His first Ring Cycle recording, with the State Opera of South Australia, won ten Helpmann Awards, including best opera and best music direction. Fisch is also an accomplished pianist and has recorded a solo disc of Wagner piano transcriptions for the Melba label.

Johann Strauss IIOn the Beautiful Blue Danube, Op.314

It has been estimated that at certain times of day during the 19th century one quarter of Vienna’s adult population might have been found at any one of the city’s hundreds of dance halls, and the Strauss dynasty, in particular, made such dance music into high art famed throughout the world. Like most of his family, Johann II was always commercially astute, and also composed nearly 18 operettas for a growing and insatiable Viennese market. The third of his completed works in the genre, Die Fledermaus (‘the bat’), opened in Vienna in 1874 and has stayed in the repertoire ever since.

It is based on a French farce, modified to suit Viennese taste and customs, in which the familiar elements of adultery, mistaken identity and disguise combine to great comic effect in settings as various as the ballroom of a Russian Prince and the local prison. Eisenstein, a young Viennese aristocrat, must serve a night or two in prison for an indiscretion, allowing his wife, Rosalinde, a free evening with her lover, who is, of course, wrongly dragged off to prison. Rosalinde disguises herself as a Hungarian countess and goes to a ball only to discover her maid, also disguised (in her mistress’ dress) as an actress, and her husband, who thought he’d take in a few waltzes before settling in at the lock-up for the night, and who unwittingly tries to seduce his masked wife. The next morning everyone winds up at the prison. There it is revealed that Eisenstein’s friend Falke has orchestrated the whole mess in revenge for having been left by Eisenstein to walk home from another drunken fancy dress party in the costume of a bat. The Overture is a mixture of themes from the operetta, beginning with the music from the prison scene in Act III, but dwelling lovingly on the waltz.

Fritz Kreisler was born in Vienna and studied violin and composition there, and, while still a child, for a time at the Paris Conservatoire. After a number of world tours he migrated

permanently from the Old World to the New, settling in the USA in 1939 just in time to escape the rise of Nazism in his native Austria. As a violinst he was celebrated for his technical virtuosity and innovative use of vibrato for a now much-emulated sound, which was notable for its intensity and focus despite a relatively small volume; in addition he is remembered for numerous original works (his teachers in Vienna included Anton Bruckner). His Viennese Rhapsodic Fantasietta, composed relatively late in his career in 1948, begins with a cadenza for solo violin but soon develops into a sequence of highly contrasting waltzes. Rich, double-stopped solo material gives way to high clear lines, cheerful major-key music contrasts with impassioned, almost Wagnerian chromaticism; the overall trajectory of the work, naturally, includes more and more bravura display.

Bavarian rather than Viennese, Richard Strauss was, of course, unrelated to the waltz dynasty. His great Romantic opera Der Rosenkavalier, which he composed to a text by Hugo von Hofmannsthal during the second decade of the 20th century, premiered in Dresden but is, nevertheless set in Vienna – if a highly fictionalised one. The action supposedly takes place during the reign of the Empress Maria Theresa, yet the score, like so much of Strauss’ music, is far from ‘classical’, and is full of waltzes even though the form was not yet current then. And the whole central idea – that a prospective bridegroom would customarily send an envoy bearing a silver rose to his intended – is merely a lovely invention of Hofmannsthal.

In Strauss’ opera the Marschallin, an unhappily married woman entering middle age, comes to the painful realisation that she must give up her much younger lover, Octavian (sung by a mezzo). The oafish (and impoverished) Baron Ochs von Lerchenau arrives and mercilessly

harasses the maid ‘Mariandel’ – who is Octavian, hurriedly disguised as a woman to avoid being found with, and therefore compromising, the Marschallin. Ochs has come to claim his bride, the beautiful and wealthy Sophie von Faninal, and the Marschallin realises that Sophie faces an awful fate. Octavian, at the Marschallin’s suggestion, is sent to present Sophie with the silver rose, and the two, as expected, fall in love. Octavian, in his disguise as ‘Mariandel’, helps to entrap the Baron, enabling Sophie to free herself from any obligation to him. The Marschallin arrives and she, Sophie and Octavian sing the great and famous trio, before departing to leave the lovers in a dreamlike state.

The Suite was probably arranged by the conductor Artur Rodzinski rather than Strauss himself, and was first performed in 1944. It begins with the opera’s Prelude, with its celebrated alternation of assertive horn-calls and lush orchestral upholstery. Without a break, the music moves into the magical scene where Octavian, as the Rosenkavalier, first appears to Sophie. Baron Ochs is evoked in the following waltz. Hofmannsthal had suggested that Strauss ‘try to think of some old-fashioned Viennese waltz, half sweet, half cheeky, which should pervade the whole Act’. In the event Strauss’ waltzes have a wonderful energy, but their fruity late-Romantic harmony make everything seem a little at sea.

The fourth section of the Suite is based on the final love-music, the crowning glory of the piece, where, the Marschallin having sadly withdrawn, Sophie and Octavian ask ‘is it a dream?’. In order to bring the suite to rousing conclusion, though, we hear a slightly slower reprise of the waltz to end.

Johann Strauss II had a complicated relationship with the Austrian state. His father supported the Emperor during the 1848 revolutions that swept through Vienna and the Empire (the Radetzky March celebrates the leader of the counter-revolution); Johann II, however, took the side of the revolutionaries. Thanks to Franz Joseph, who became Emperor once the rebellion was quelled, Strauss was eventually restored to favour, having his honours restored to him (and the citizenship that he forfeited in order to marry again) in later life. Nevertheless, the much-loved Emperor Waltz, dating from 1889, was first performed before the Prussian Emperor in Berlin. Like many of Strauss’ waltzes this is really a sequence of contrasting pieces strung together, in this case after a lengthy introductory march.

Cadenza – a showy passage by a solo instrument, usually towards the end of a concerto movement.Chromaticism – use of notes which are not part of the key the music is played in.Double-stopping – bowing two or more strings at the same time.Overture – this term has two quite distinct meanings. It refers to an instrumental composition acting as an introduction to an opera or oratorio; it also refers to a stand-alone orchestral work with a descriptive title which the music illustrates in some way. These two genres are often referred to as the dramatic overture and the concert overture respectively.Tone poem – a programmatic work (that is, one based on a literary, pictorial or other extra-musical idea) for orchestra, usually in a single movement. Vibrato – a slight oscillating fluctuation in pitch used to add colour and emotion to the raw sound.

Glossary

Kreisler’s Liebesfreud and Liebesleid celebrate the joy and pain – in that order – of love in faux-Viennese style. Kreisler realised that audiences might be wary of new music, so mischievously attributed many of his own works to long-dead composers. Together with Schön Rosmarin they form the three Old Viennese Dance Melodies attributed, by Kreisler, to the colleague and then rival of Johann Strauss I, Joseph Lanner (1801-1843) who did much to make the waltz as popular as it became. Later, when asked to provide originals for some of his ‘discoveries’, Kreisler confessed to critic Olin Downes:

The entire series labelled ‘classical manuscripts’ are my original compositions with the sole exception of the first eight bars from the Couperin Chanson Louis XIII, taken from a traditional melody. Necessity forced this course on me thirty years ago when I was desirous of enlarging my programmes. I found it expedient and tactless to repeat my name endlessly on the programmes.

which annoyed such reputable critics as Ernest Newman when they realised they had been pranked.

The younger Johann Strauss, it has been said, ‘made [the Danube] blue for all’. On the Beautiful Blue Danube was written for the Vienna Men’s Chorus in 1867 to a truly dreadful text that begins ‘Wiener seid’s froh! Oho! Wieso?’ (‘Viennese be happy! Oho! But why?’); only when Strauss ditched the words for a triumphant premiere in Paris that year did the waltz come into its own as a miniature tone poem depicting the river. It is sometimes sung to the text ‘Donau, so blau, so blau’ (‘Danube, so blue, so blue’) written decades later by Franz von Gernerth.

WASO’s 90th Anniversary GalaTristan und Isolde – Opera in ConcertThursday 16 August 6pm – 11pm Sunday 19 August 2pm – 7pm MATINEE Perth Concert Hall

To celebrate WASO’s 90th year, Principal Conductor Asher Fisch, one of today’s supreme Wagner interpreters, leads two performances of Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde at Perth Concert Hall.

Composed in a state of ecstatic infatuation, Tristan und Isolde is one of the greatest of all tragic love stories. Young lovers Tristan and Isolde share a passion so overwhelming that it transcends the bounds of their earthly existence. Thwarted in life, only in death can their love be transfigured and their souls united in a metaphysical hereafter.

To portray the heightened passions of this epic drama, Wagner pushed his music into unprecedented expressive territory, testing the limits of the musical “rules” of the time. In doing so, he revolutionised the art form.

Such an extraordinary work deserves an extraordinary cast. WASO welcomes the finest Tristan of our time, superstar tenor Stuart Skelton, the first ever Australian Tristan at the Metropolitan Opera. World-renowned soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek brings her acclaimed Isolde to Australia for the first time. The exceptional cast also includes Ain Anger, one of the great Wagnerian basses, as King Marke, Ekaterina Gubanova as Brangäne, and Boaz Daniel as Kurwenal.

Witnessing a great performance of Tristan und Isolde is a revelatory experience. Be transported by the emotions, intensity, drama and sheer sumptuous beauty of Wagner’s masterpiece. We hope you join us on this magnificent musical journey!Asher Fisch appears courtesy of Wesfarmers Arts.
