TWELTH SUNDAY IN

ORDINARY TIME

JUNE 23, 2013

A note from Fr. Joe

Well, as you read this, another eventful week will have occurred here at St. Thomas of Villanova.

There are two things in particular that I want to highlight for you. First is the final meeting of our parish’s

Stewardship Council, for this term, that took place on Monday evening, the 17th. It’s one of the most

gratifying in that we decide on the distribution of grants to worthy organizations and causes, from the

treasure that you so generously give throughout the year. It also drives home the significance of

stewardship as a way of living and our call to be good disciples. The most important question we can

answer is the one that Jesus asks in this Sunday’s Gospel – “But who do you say that I am?” Our response

can and does make all the difference in the world! After all is said and done, we will have distributed over

$125,000 in stewardship funds for this fiscal year. Look for a detailed accounting in our Annual

Stewardship Report this fall.

The other thing of which I wanted to make you aware is a piece of good news for our Order and

the Church. On Saturday of this weekend, June 22nd, one of our Augustinian friars, Craig McMahon,

O.S.A., was ordained a priest by Bishop Michael Fitzgerald in the Villanova Church. Craig, who

originally hails from Tarrytown, New York, is a graduate of Villanova University and a member of our St.

Thomas of Villanova Province. He’ll be heading on to the London School of Economics for doctoral

studies and will be helping at the Augustinian parish in the Hammersmith section of London, where he’ll

also be residing for the next few years. Congratulations to Craig! May his vocation inspire all of us in

ours! As St. Paul reminds us in his Letter to the Galatians, “For all of you who were baptized into Christ

have clothed yourselves with Christ…you are all children of God.”

God Bless!

Fr. Joe

Thank you for your generosity for the weekend of June 15 and 16, 2013: Number of Envelopes 271 Envelope Amount $12,315.00 Loose Cash $809.25 Electronic Offerings $1,277.88 Other $1,130.00 Total $15,532,13 10% Tithe $1,553.21 Income for June 18, 2012 $24,03853

Stewardship Thought for the Week “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 We are not very good at “denying ourselves” in our society. Our current economic situation is evidence of what happens when people think they can have every-thing they want. Jesus calls us to set our own personal “wants” aside so that we have the resources to follow Him instead.

Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of the Archbishop

222 North 17th Street

Philadelphia, PA 19103-1299

June 23, 2013 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, There are many places around the globe where the Church struggles to be a visible sign of charity, but thankfully, the Holy Father is the pilgrim of charity for Catholics everywhere. In poor dioceses where many are dependent on the Church for social and pastoral support; in regions where Catholics are persecuted for their faith; and in nations overloaded with refugees and victims of war and natural disasters, the works done by the Holy Father help the church to extend charity to those most in need. This special appeal gives us the opportunity to be pilgrims of charity around the world. Our gifts to this annual Collection help the Holy Father strengthen dioceses, religious orders, and struggling communities of faith when they need it most. This year the Peter’s Pence Collection will be taken at all Masses on the weekend of June 29 and 30, 2013. Many who struggle to survive rely on pilgrims of charity to assist them through their difficulties. Please give generously to the Collection and know that in doing so, you become a pilgrim of charity around the globe. Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia

Job for Refugee Needed

For three years, STV and OMGC have been

joint sponsors for Iraqi war refugee Hamza and his family. Hamza works in food service at Villanova and is

self- supporting.

His brother Hussein, his wife and three children arrived here as refugees last December.

They are sponsored by St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ardmore and are living in Philadelphia, off the

Roosevelt Boulevard. The only work that Hussein has been able to obtain is part-time position at an Ardmore

gas station. He takes three buses for two hours to get

there. He is quite far from self-supporting. St. Paul plans to move him to the Main Line in

August, but he needs a full-time job with health insurance to be self supporting. He worked for the

Americans in the Green Zone in Baghdad as a Security

Guard Supervisor. Before the war, he was educated and employed as an English teacher.

If you know of an available position and can arrange an interview for him, will you please contact

[email protected] who will be happy to forward his resume by mail or email. Thanks for your

consideration.

SUNDAY FOR JUSTICE FOR IMMIGRANTS IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF PHILADELPHIA

JUNE 30, 2013 The Catholic Bishops of the United States and Mexico remind us:

Migrants and immigrants are in our parishes and

in our communities. In both our countries, we see

much injustice and violence against them and much

suffering and despair among them because civil and

church structures are still inadequate to accommodate

their needs.

SUNDAY FOR JUSTICE FOR IMMIGRANTS invites everyone in the area of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to respond in three ways to the plight of immigrants in our parishes and communities: 1. We need to be informed of the challenges immigrants face each day and to know the Church’s position in support of just immigrant reform. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops provides easily accessible parish resources for this important information: http:// www.justiceforimmigrants.org/index.shtml. 2. Take the time to write Congress of your support, in accord with the Bishops’ Justice for Immigrants Campaign, especially with regard to pending legislation. See the above website for guidance to contact political officials. 3. Pray! We must bring our concerns for justice before the Lord in our personal prayer and, especially so, when we gather with others to pray for justice for immigrants. Plan now to attend a Mass for the intention of Justice for Immigrants.
