Forty Days

During the forty days of Lent, Christians around the world rededicate

themselves to growing in faith, trust and obedience through a careful and

prayerful examination of their practices, priorities and pleasures.

English Lutheran Church introduces both metaphorical and practical

enhancements to our community life during the season of Lent.

Mark Flaten and the Property Committee hung a large 20-foot cross from the ceiling of our sanctuary in order to remind us that Lent is a journey to the cross of Jesus Christ. Our Theology of the Cross recognizes that follow-ing Jesus often entails self-sacrifice and suffering. It is not power, but rather love that changes lives and draws people to Christ Jesus as their savior.

During Lent, we will use Setting Three from Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Many will recognize Setting Three as the popular liturgy from our former Lutheran Book of Worship (green hymnal).

In March, our Senior Choir will sing anthems from John Rutter’s Requiem. The entire Requiem with a chamber orchestra will be sung at both services on Palm Sunday, March 25.

On Palm Sunday, we will gather in the Fellowship Hall and process with palm branches swaying outside and back into the sanctuary.

REQUIEM by John Rutter

performed by Senior Choir Palm Sunday, March 24.

Midweek Worship Schedule

Our Wednesday Lenten services will derive their themes from Walter Brueggemann’s book, Sabbath as Resistance: Saying NO to the Culture of Now. Confirmation students will light the candles, hand out bulletins, col-lect the offering and read the opening prayer at the evening services. We will use Holden Evening Prayer as our liturgy and Pastor Solyst will preach.

Pastor’s Press

In a recent staff meeting, we discussed the annual “Congregational Report.” This report is a compilation of various mem-bership statistics, financial information, and a series of statements in which staff rate how the congregation is doing. One of these statements caught my attention: “Equipping members to share their faith with others.”

Each week I ask my confirmation students to share where they have seen God. Most of the time, I get blank stares. On occa-sion there are a few who say something thoughtful. My students are not the only ones who struggle talking about God at work in their lives. When the time has come for us to talk about your faith, what do you say? What do you say when a friend facing trouble asks if you think praying is helpful? How do you answer your child when she asks if you can see God? What is your response when bad things happen to good people? Many of us feel that we do not know enough so we don’t say anything.

The story of Jesus feeding the thousands of people with a few loaves and fish (John 6:1-14) is helpful as we ponder our reluctance to say anything about our faith. In this story, a huge crowd of people has gathered to hear Jesus teach, and the problem comes up with how to feed all of them. A disciple finds a young boy who has five loaves of bread and a couple of fish, but that is not enough for the thousands of people who have gathered. Jesus takes what they have, gives thanks for it, and then has the disciples distribute it. The little bit has been transformed into an abundant meal. In fact there are twelve baskets of leftovers!

One of my favorite preachers, Thomas Long, points out that this is a “bad news that turns out to be good news story.” The “bad news” is that none of us has what it takes to feed other people, including

sharing our faith story with them. If our faith stories depended solely upon our own wisdom and knowl-edge of God, we and those who hear us would be left starving. We have only bits and pieces, like the young boy’s loaves and fish, to offer, and by themselves, they are not enough.

And yet, the bits and pieces that we do have are enough. The “good news” is that God takes our bits of experience and piec-es of knowledge and makes them enough, even abundant. Think of how Jesus took just a little bit of food and turned it into a feast with leftovers!

While you may come up with excuses as to why you’re not qualified to share your faith story, look at the history of Christianity. Faith has been spread by the authentic talk of everyday people saying the best they can about what they know and believe.

Every Christian can speak honestly about their faith story. Our little bits and pieces are part of a grander story – God’s story. We know this because of worship. Wor-ship unfolds the story of God’s love for the world, from the very beginning to the end of time, and we are a part of it.

We live in a world that does not value things of faith or God. It is up to each of us to remind those around us, especially future generations of why we believe in God. You have a faith story to share – those times when God’s presence has been real to you. Share your bits and pieces with your spouse, your children, and your neighbor, trusting that God will transform them into an abundant feast with basket-fuls of leftovers!

During Lent the Ministry Council will be sponsoring a hunger awareness campaign entitled “Feed My Sheep”. This is part of a synod project simi-lar to the “Cow Project” of two years ago. We have decided to sponsor six sheep. Each sheep represents 500 dollars collected to fight hun-ger - so our goal is to raise at least $3,000 dollars for World Hunger during Lent.

To support our Sheep Project and complete our goal of six sheep, Min-istry Council is sponsoring several activities during Lent.

Pastor Becky and Pastor Grow’s offices, as well as the Welcome Center, have been painted with a lovely shepherd scene thanks to the artistic ability of Genny Trushenski. During Lent, the Sunday School kids will be bringing in their dol-lars to help fight hunger. For every dollar offering they bring in, they will decorate a sheep to display on the window mural. We are hoping there are so many sheep that Pastor Becky and Pastor Rog won’t be able to see out of their offices. Adults, too, can join the fun since anyone can purchase and decorate a sheep for a dollar to help cover and adorn our windows.

Several artists from our church have painted the six large wooden sheep for us - and they are pretty cool! We are giving you the opportunity to choose your favorite sheep of the six by voting with your coins and currency. The sheep and the voting jars will be available in the narthex

throughout Lent. The money raised through the voting will go to World Hunger, as will money for the Hun-gry Jar during the month of March.

In June, our 6 sheep will travel to the Synod Assembly where they will be joined by hundreds of sheep from churches all around our synod. Two years ago, there were around 250 cows at the Assembly. We are hoping for many more sheep at the assembly this year.

We strongly believe that hunger is baaaa-d. If we all give a little to fight hunger, it will make a big difference in the lives of those suffering from hunger. Please help us achieve our $3,000 goal. “Thank You” for sup-porting the “Feed My Sheep” Proj-ect.

This month's feature volunteers are members of the Pepin Family: Tim, Missy, Grace, Josh, and Joey.

Many of our members deliver mobile meals to shut-ins in our com-munity. Our church is responsible for the 1st-15th of each month.

Missy says, " We deliver Mobile Meals because we like to help people, and we think it's important to teach the kids about our responsibility to help. We've been delivering meals long enough that we recognize many of the recipients, so it's nice to get to see the same faces every month. "

Thank you for your continued support for this ministry.

2017 Benevolence Report

As a congregation, the people of English Lutheran Church are very generous and your generosity touches many lives through a multitude of venues. In 2017, through our general fund, dedicated funds and Mission Endowment Fund, we distributed over $128,000 to the greater mission of the ELCA, to people in need locally and around the world, and to those projects that support people in need.

Mission support and supplemental funds to the ELCA and LAX Synod .....................$69,471Hunger and justice programs including ELCA World Hunger Appeal ........................$21,955Direct aid to families including gas, food, rent, energy and emergency response ........$13,199Sugar Creek Bible Camp ..............................................................................................$7,972Lutheran Social Services ...............................................................................................$6,821La Crosse area charities ...............................................................................................$4,768Common Ground Campus Ministry .............................................................................$2,442

Thank you for your generosity. The individual who paid the final $96,000 on our mortgage last December explained his motivation in this way: “I have been wondrously blessed and it gives me great joy to be able to share.” Yes indeed! God loves a cheerful giver.

On Easter Sunday, the sanctuary will be decorated with lilies, mums, and hydrangeas purchased with donations. Excess money from this fund will be donated to St. Clare Health Mission and WAFER Food Pantry.

Fill out the form below and place it in the offering plate with your check pay-able to English Lutheran Church or drop it off to the church office. Any amount is appreciated.

Easter Flower Fundenvironmentally conscious

The Worship Council has been pursuing becoming more environmentally conscious in our Church’s use of commu-nion cups. Imagine our delight when it was discovered that the small plastic communion cups that we have been using are in fact recyclable. Many thanks to the Altar Ministry personnel for taking the time to see that these are going to be recycled in the future. Sharing the bread and wine at Communion knit together with responsible stewardship is a win/win for our church.

Happy New Year! We hope your new year is off to a good start in spite of the cold weather we had in January. Our financial year got off to a slow start because of the cold, but we hope for improve-ment as we go toward spring and the weather warms.

Our envelope offering (cash and checks) dropped considerably from 2017 and 2016 results. Our Simply Giving offering, which now includes the newly added methods of electronic giving, did increase by about $2500. This did help offset some of the drop in Envelope Offering.

Disbursements increased over 2017 due to Stability Triangle and Five Big Rocks expenses. Benevolence disbursements dropped form 2017 due to the drop in receipts for the month. Although we do show a loss for the month, it was not terribly bad considering the weather.

The good news for January is that we did not have to make a mort-gage payment! As you recall, we paid off the rest of our building project mortgage at the end of December. THANK YOU for your generous support of both the mortgage fund campaign and our general fund budget.

We look forward to seeing you at the Wednesday Lenten services and on Sundays. Keep warm and enjoy the lengthening days.
