It’s off season and I’m sure most of you will be making the most of it. Not so for both our Show Secretary and Chief Steward, they have had to contend

with some unfortunate news. Being invited to an earlier than usual meeting with the Belmont Forum Shopping Centre left them with the news that the Centre had taken the decision to withdraw as major sponsor for our Annual Show. The B.F.S.C. will still provide significant support by way of a show venue, tables, promotion, advertising

and display posters in the Centre.

Ian has been instrumental in receiving ap-proval from the B.F.S.C. to auction the flowers at the end of the show as was the original practice. This will at least give us an income stream to help underwrite the show prize money and expenses. He is currently working with Sarah Moore, Mar-keting Manager, B.F.S.C. exploring the possibility of securing the services of an auctioneer through one of the Centres ten-ants ‘The Professionals’. Ian has kept Committee Members informed at each stage and judging by the positive feedback from them on outcomes to date I extend thanks to him on your behalf for so readily

dealing with this issue.

The good news is that we will now be able to proceed with arrangements for our 2014

Annual Show.

Our last social occasion was on Anzac Day and this took in a visit to Ron Seaton’s place to see his flowers and then on to Liz and Ralph Coombes for a welcome cuppa and a sneak viewing of Ralph’s flowers (i.e. the ones that were not covered - I be-lieve the viewing fee was $5.00). Ralph had an interesting technique or two for fin-ishing off his blooms that were noted by members. Ron we appreciate a visit to see your chrysies and never come away with-out having learnt something new, thank you for the opportunity of seeing them again this year. Liz and Ralph we always enjoy the fellowship when we come to your home and never fail to have a good laugh. Thank you for the welcome cuppa and the lovely spread for afternoon tea, it was

greatly appreciated.

Gosnells Show came up shortly afterwards on 4th & 5th May and thanks to the support of growers the event was a great success. The front cover of this Newsletter features the winning set in the Sunnyvale Section; an extraordinary achievement by Ron

Atyeo, well done Ron.

This was followed by our own W.A.C.S. Show 8th to 11th May. What an excellent

outcome in a difficult season; an in-credible spectacle in the circumstances, well done to all exhibitors. Frank and Ian have again captured all the detail in Showcase & DVD of the Shows 2013. I would like to say thankyou to them both as this service is not equalled anywhere else in the nation. Ian has also in-cluded the full results from the Show

Book in this Newsletter.

Our Presentation Lunch was not so well attended this year for a variety of rea-sons; however, those of us that were able to make it thoroughly enjoyed the

occasion.

We have at long last received some good rains in July although still well be-low average for the month. Lets hope

August brings further good falls.

By now you will be watching the pro-gress of the sucker growth (stolons) on your plants and making sure you secure these against pests and fungal prob-lems. If your plants are out in the weather be mindful that rain will act as a catalyst for rust and if not checked can cause damage and a great deal of extra work so keep them rogued and

sprayed. When planting out your cut-tings don’t forget to do extra for distribu-tion day, we will need all the revenue we can raise to make up the loss of

sponsorship.

Our Secretary and Show Secretary will be overseas until after the AGM so we wish them well and look forward to their return refreshed and ready for the new

season.

A reminder that the Annual General & General Meetings will be held Tuesday 10th September, 1.00pm (Rotary Hall). The Committee Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 17th September, 1.00pm (Rotary Hall). Don’t forget the raffle and a plate for afternoon tea. I look forward

to seeing you at the AGM.

Ken May

Many times Ken has shared his knowl-edge by way of cultural notes. More often than not it has been July/August so rather than reinvent the wheel I have gone back a number of years and combined extracts

from his notes for this Newsletter. Editor.

Now that the shows have concluded there is a little time for relaxation but we must also be looking ahead with the new sea-

son approaching.

By now you will have cut back your plants to encourage the development of the un-derground stolens (they appear as the new growing shoots) and it is from these that we select our cuttings. These are usually taken in the latter part of August and during September, but can be taken even later ie. for Fukusuki and Daruma

types these are taken in December.

Over the wintering period make sure that necessary precautions are taken to pre-

vent damage by snails/caterpillars etc – if left unchecked these pests can cause a lot of damage to the new shoots. Watch for signs of rust and if seen take corrective action to remedy the problem. Remove affected leaves and spray with a systemic fungicide (Rose Shield is both an insecti-cide and systemic fungicide and readily

available).

Keep the soil pliable and apply a light dusting of fertilizer this should assist with development of new growth. Be sure to take extra cuttings for the Society Distribu-

tion Day in late October.

This is also the time to review your efforts made in the season just concluded – did everything go to plan, were there any problems, how can you improve your re-sults, what are you planning for the com-ing season. Are you going to discard any

cultivars not performing, are you planning

to obtain new ones noted at the shows. Ronlynn Gardens catalogue should be available shortly, there is always some new ones listed for us to try. Those of you who visited his nursery would have viewed many varieties and been able to

assess their prospects.

Over the next two months consideration should be given to the preparation of your garden beds and potting mix. Most successful growers now invest in a premium grade potting mix e.g. Bai-leys or Richgro rather than prepare

their own.

Advice of any new cultivars being grown or any suggested amendments to existing classification of cultivars should be advised by 30 September to enable information to be forwarded to the Secretary of the ACC for inclusion

in the ACC Register.

Thank you Ken for your thoughts.

In the Centenary Year a Classified Official Catalogue of Varieties and Rules for Judg-ing was published and distributed to mem-bers. Two shows were held at Westmin-ster and the prizes offered were worthy of the National Society, including the New Centenary Trophy presented by the Presi-dent, Frank Doodson Esq, together with other challenge cups and medals, the at-tendance being the best ever. The Society was taking off again in fact in 1949 over

2,000 new members were enrolled.

Special Provincial Classes were instituted during 1947 at both Sheffield and Hudders-field Shows, with the object of assisting N.C.S. members living at a distance , who found it difficult to exhibit at the London Nationals. In the same year the advice bureau was set up by the N.C.S. at the

Southport Flower Show. Again in 1947

over 1,000 new members were enrolled.

In 1949 the formation of a Northern Group of Affiliated Societies was approved. More than 1,800 new members were enrolled in 1949. Owing to the rapidly increasing membership and the extra work entailed,

an Assistant Secretary was appointed.

In 1950 the increasing income of the Soci-ety enabled the Executive Committee to fill a long felt need for closer contact with members, by the publication of the first issue of a regular Quarterly Bulletin, de-signed to give up to date information on chrysanthemum matters and the work and progress of the Society. The total number

of new members in 1950 exceeded 1,100.

Both the Early and Late Flowering Shows 6

in 1951 were the largest since the War and every available foot of space was occupied by either amateur or trade exhib-its. In 1951 1,200 new members were

enrolled.

In September 1952 the Society introduced The Chrysanthemum Growers Diary. The South Wales Group was founded in 1953 and another 1,500 new members enrolled. !953 saw the introduction of a Judges ‘Certificate of Competence’ which is is-sued by the Society to any Member who can satisfy the Floral Committee that they are fully qualified to judge chrysanthe-

mums.

The first National Register of Names was introduced in 1955 to be followed in 1957 with the first edition of the Chrysanthe-mum Manual; this proved to be the most

popular book put out by the Society.

1962 saw the first edition of the publica-tion ‘Chrysanthemum Stopping & Timing’. This was superseded after only a few years by a smaller booklet put out by the Northern Group and this is brought up to date regularly. The Scottish Group was formed in the same year to be followed by

the Midland Group in 1965. The new Championship Classes came into be-

ing at both National Shows in 1963.

The six Groups covering the British Isles were finally formed in 1968 with the South West Group in 1968 and the Southern Group in 1971. Membership of the Soci-ety was at its highest around this period

with a total of 14,000 in 1967.

The first demonstration of the late flower-ing spray growing took place in the green-houses at Wisley in 1971. 1975 saw the start of the Championship Classes at Westminster in the National Shows and

are now continued at Stafford.

T h e S o c i e t y ’ s p u b l i c a t i o n ‘Chrysanthemum Exhibiting and Judging’ collated and written by E. Morley Jones in 1963 formed the basis of a new publica-tion in 1975 called ‘Judging and Exhibit-ing’. Considerable work by a Committee of ten was put into the preparation of the new rules and was finally collated and written by Harry Randall. 1974 saw the South Western Group discontinued owing to lack of support, but 1986 saw the for-

mation of the Western Group.
