The Three Holy Hierarchs: Three Joys of

Orthodoxy Saturday, January 30

At the end of January, our Faith is rekindled by the

celebration of the lives of three holy Hierarchs of the

Church, who keep inspiring us with their writings and

especially with the example of their Christ-centered life.

They are known as Saints Basil, Gregory and John.

Below, is a brief synopsis of who they are.

Saint Basil the Great (330-379 AD), born in Cappadocia

(Turkey). Archbishop of Neocaesaria and great biblical

scholar. Author of Haexameron (the Six Days of Creation)

and other Bible commentaries as well as founder of the

first Christian Hospital and Nursing Home. He

abbreviated the Liturgy of Saint James that bears his

name.

Saint Gregory Nazianzus (300-390), son of Gregory and

Nona. A charismatic Archbishop of Constantinople, who

preached against Arianism. Theologian. Biblical scholar.

Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople.

Lived from 347 to 407 AD, born in Antioch, Syria. The

greatest orator and stylist of Orthodoxy, surnamed:

Golden Mouth. Abreviated St. Basil’s Liturgy that bears

his name.

Sfinții Trei Ierarhi: Trei Bucurii ale

Ortodoxiei Sâmbătă, 30 ianuarie

La sfârșitul lunii ianuarie, credința noastră ne este re-

aprinsă de serbarea vieții a trei Ierarhi ai Bisericii, care ne

inspiră nu numai cu scrierile lor, ci mai ales cu pilda unei

vieți centrate pe Hristos. Ei sunt cunoscuți, simplu, ca

Sfinții Vasile, Grigore și Ioan. Mai jos, voi arăta pe scurt

un rezumat despre cine au fost ei.

Sf. Vasile cel Mare (330-379 AD) s-a născut în

Cappadochia (Turcia). A fost Arhiepiscop al Neocezareii

și biblicist, precum și autor al Hexameronului (Șase zile

ale Creației) și al altor comentarii, precum și fondator al

întâiului Spital și Casă de Bătrâni creștine. A prescurtat

Liturghia care îi poartă numele, după Sfântul Iacob.

Sfântul Grigore Nazianz (300-390), fiul lui Grigore și

Nona. A fost un harismatic Arhiepiscop al

Constantinopolului, care a predicat contra arianismului.

Este Teolog și Școlar biblic de referință.

Sfântul Ioan Gură de Aur, Arhiepiscopul

Constantinopolului. A trait din 347 până în 407 AD, a fost

născut în Antiohia, Siria. Este cel mai mare orator și stilist

al Ortodoxiei, supra-numit “Gură de Aur”. El a prescurtat

Liturghia care îi poartă numele, după Sfântul Vasile.

In the Absence of Church Dinners

We have become accustomed to complete the parish budget from

parish dinners and events. Now, the Pandemy prevents us to have

such fund-raisers and we need to make a conscious effort to

support our church. What should we do?

The Parish Council invites every member to do the following:

Let us pay our parish dues early in the year, that is now!

Many families do not pay dues, but for one member. Because

salvation is a personal matter, every member, 18 years of age

and older, is expected to pay dues.

Let’s not forget to bring or send our weekly donation to the

church and be generous.

Gheorghe D. Mateescu, 92, of

Lakewood, Professor Emeritus at CWRU,

passed away January 22. 2021. He was born in

Pitesti, Romania, to his parents Dumitru and

Ortansa and grew in a family of seven children,

all of them very educated as doctors,

pharmacists and professors. He immigrated to

the US in 1967. He married Claudia G.

Sfintescu on April 23, 1990 at Holy Trinity

Cathedral, Pitesti. He was a chemist, university

professor and a scientist. Graduate of the Institute of Pharmacy in

Bucharest (1951) and earned his Ph.D. at Case Western University

under Professor G. Olah. He was a researcher at the Military Hospital,

Bucharest (1951-64), Professor of chemistry at the School of

Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, a researcher at the Nenitescu

Institute of Organic Chemistry, Bucharest (1964-67). He researched

together with G.A. Olah, a Nobel Prize winner (68-71).

He was a Professor of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University

and founder and director of MAIF, CWRU 1971. Guest Professor at

the Universities of Bruxelles ('73), Paris ('77), Marseille ('82), Basel

('77), Ljubljana ('87) and Kyushu ('95, '97). In 1995 he founded the

first lab of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (RMN) in Romania. He

published over 100 studies in professional magazines and received

many prizes, recognitions, and distinctions from the Romanian

Academy, CWRU, ISMRM and other institutions. He was an

Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy of Science, Doctor

Honoris Causa of the University of Bucharest ('97) and School of

Medicine of Bucharest ('98). Lately he received The Medal STEAUA

ROMANIEI (the highest Romanian Honorary Grade instituted in

1877 by Carol I King) of Romania and many others.

His merits were often saluted in the Romania media (America,

Curierul Romanesc), in his country of origin, the US and Canada. He

took a special interest in promoting Magnetic Resonance in Romania.

He was member of Saint Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in

Cleveland.

Gheorghe is survived by his wife, Claudia, his sister Maria and

brother Constantin and many nieces and nephews. He was

predeceased by his siblings: +Georgeta, Smaranda, Sica, Dumitru.

LADIES AUXILIARY AT WORK

Just a few days after a week has passed

from the Ladies Auxiliary meeting and

elections, Mrs. Maria Tent, President, has

gathered all her forces, and with the help of

some ladies and a few men, made this week potatoe &

cheese and prune filling pierogies.

If you were not aware, a portion of the profit of this

organization is going to A.R.F.O.R.A., our Monasteries

and other Non-Profit Orthodox Organizations for different

noble causes, and, not lastly, to our church. We would like

to thank Mrs. Tent and her helpers of this week: Florica

Cotrău (Vice-President), Maria Cîrlig, Mihaela Hetruc

(Treasurer), Marian Ciuta & Vasile Copaciu.

DO YOU LOVE ME? (JOHN 21,15)

Jesus asked Peter three times: Do you love me? To prove

his love, He asked him to “Tend My Sheep”. This means:

Do your work!

Next Sunday, February 7, all church members will meet to

examine our status as a parish. Jesus is asking YOU also:

“Do you love Me?” If you love the Lord, you love His

church and you will not miss this day, but rather come and

do His work! “For every tree is known by his fruit.” (Jn.

6,44)

MĂ IUBEȘTI TU PE MINE?

(Ioan 21,15) De trei ori Iisus îl întreabă pe Petru: “Mă iubești tu pe

Mine?”Ca dovadă a iubirii îi cere: “Paște oile Mele!”, adică, fă

lucru pe care ți-l cer!

Duminică, 7 Februarie, ne vom strânge în adunarea paroohiei

spre a evalua situația bisericii. Iisus te întreabă și pe tine,

cititorule: “Mă iubești tu pe Mine?” Dacă iubești pe Domnul și

Biserica Sa nu vei lipsi de la această adunare, ci vei veni și vei

face lucrul Său! “Fiecare pom este cunoscut după roadele

lui.” (In. 6,44)

The Holy Three Hierarchs

The Holy Three Hierarchs are also called Ecumenical Teachers. They belong to the

Fathers of the Church because they used their excellent education to explain the Holy

Scriptures to the people, so everyone could live a life in Christ. They are the Patron Saints of all levels of education,

of teachers, and of students. In Greece and Cyprus, on their feast day, the Greek letters are also celebrated. Schools

organize festivities that include poems, plays, folk and dance shows and similar activities.
