Games are played on Monday nights at Cottage Hill Park.

We will play a 10 game season.

In his recent book, What Good Is God?, Christian author Philip Yancey tells the story of a peaceful revolution that took place in the Ukraine. The Ukraine is a former republic of the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet empire, the country began an agonizingly slow movement toward democracy. In 2004, elections were held. The reform candidate, Victor Yushchenko, ran for President. During the campaign, he was mysteriously poisoned with dioxin. Although weakened and disfigured from the poison, Yushchenko refused to back down. He remained in the race, and exit polls on the day of the election indicated that he would be elected by a wide margin. By nightfall, however, the state-run television announced that Victor Yushchenko had been “decisively defeated.” The government had rigged the election.That would have been the end of it had it not been for Natalya Dmitruk, a brave woman who provided sign language translation of the television news for the hearing impaired. As the news announcer told the audience that Yushchenko had lost, Natalya was shown on the lower right corner of the television screen. Unknown to the television producers, she signed, “I am addressing all the deaf citizens of Ukraine. Don’t believe what they say. They are lying and I am ashamed to translate these lies. Yushchenko is our President!”Deaf viewers immediately began sending text-messages to friends and family. Journalists picked up the story, and, over the next several weeks, opposition to the regime intensified. With hundreds of thousands flooding the streets demanding new elections, the government finally capitulated. New elections were held, and Yushchenko won.The message on the “big screen” of our culture says, “You only count if you are rich, famous, beautiful, or powerful.” The church does not control the big screen. But like a sign language translator in the corner of the screen, the church can challenge the world’s lies. By our words and actions, we can tell people that God loves them whether they are great or small, rich or poor, beautiful or plain. We can tell them that there is forgiveness and hope in Christ. We can tell them to stop listening to the world’s lies. We can tell them that people matter to God — and to us.Who knows? We might start a peaceful revolution in Mobile.Paul

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY: Church members volunteer and work with the deacons to visit members who are homebound or living in nursing homes. Visits are made at your convenience. Facilitator: Betty Saxon

ROUND TABLE BOOK GROUP: This group meets the second Tuesday of the month in the Fireside Room for book reviews. There is a different book and reviewer each month. Facilitator: Sara Crawford and Vera Edwards

SARAH KIRK BIBLE STUDY: A Bible study group meeting the third Tuesday of the month at 10:00 A.M. in the Activities Center. Studies vary. Facilitator: Billye McCarter Teacher: Nell Ritchie

Welcome the Southern MissCarillon

Founded in 1985, Carillon is celebrating 25 years of excellence in hand bell ringing. Carillon consists of 10-14 ringers selected annually by campus-wide auditions. The ensemble performs 20-25 concerts each year. Carillon has developed a regional, national, and international reputation. Noteworthy performances include appearances at National Directors’ Seminars for the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers in Reston, Virginia (1991); in Mobile, Alabama (1994) and in Palm Springs, California (2001).
