Friday 13th, 2015 will be etched in the memories of

French Residents forever. Described as the worst attack

since World War II, many are still reeling from the shock

of that fateful Friday evening.

France has declared war on Radical Islam and bombs

from French aircraft are falling on ISIS’s base, Raqqa on a

daily basis.

We do not know the outcome of this latest chain of

events but others may claim that it is just bad luck as that

fateful day was Friday 13th.

While many will laugh off the superstitious day, others

will remain in bed paralyzed by fear and avoid daily

tasks, conducting business or traveling. In the U.S., an

estimated 17 to 21 million people suffer from a fear of

Friday the 13th, according to a study by the North

Carolina Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute.

In the Gregorian calendar, Friday the 13th always occurs

at least once a year and can appear up to three times in

any one year.

We believe that Friday 13th is just another day and should

not be feared. The terrorists that committed carnage on

that evening may have planned it on that day but it is not

known why.

In his statement issued on Monday the Premier of the

Cayman Islands joined the rest of the world in mourning

those who died in France in Friday’s terrorism attacks.

He commended the swift action of police in rounding up

and detaining suspects.

To residents and visitors from France, he stated that they

and their nation are in our thoughts and prayers.

He added that this country knows that the threat of

additional terrorism attacks remains high, not only in

France but throughout the civilized world. This was not

just an attack on Paris and France, but an attack on all

mankind, he said.

Mr Ebanks was in full character during Saturday’s parade

“You are frighteningly real, too real”, “Unbelievable”, “Something out of the history books”, these are all comments made by visitors who have encountered Cayman’s longest running pirate, Darvin Ebanks. The name Darvin Ebanks has become synonymous with that of the Cayman Islands’ national festival, Pirates Week. From its inception in 1977 to this very day, Mr Ebanks has continually played a role in keeping the make-believe aspect of Cayman pirate culture alive. He brings to life the character of Captain Black Terrence each year, creating a “real” experience for all who meet him during the ten day festival. “It makes Pirates Week look real for visitors especially; that way we keep people coming back more. They say [its] like something out of the movies,” Mr Ebanks told Cayman Weekly.

Born in Grand Cayman, the George Towner owns his own photography gallery, is a certified scuba diver, photographer, former seaman, and professional entertainer. An established Caymanian who simply likes to play “dress-up”. In the late 1990’s he helped to form the Las Tortugas pirate crew, which still exists today but Mr Ebanks has moved on to “Captain” the Bloody Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers sail on the imaginary tall ship, “The Grim Reaper”.

“Some people are afraid of us because we are in character and we’re acting the part,” said Mr Ebanks. In 2006, he was awarded by the Pirates Week Committee and the Cayman Islands Government for his decades of work and contribution to the festival and the country.

With elaborate costumes including replica guns and swords based on the Victorian era, Mr Ebanks and his crew perform coordinated sword fights, taking on the persona of the pirate character given to them when inducted into the group. He told us this offers onlookers the chance to remove themselves from reality and enter into the fantasy that is Pirates Week.

He said it is not only a way to support the economic drive the festival helps to create each year during low tourist season but it has become a lucrative venture for him as well. “The festival, that fantasy, the fun, draws many to come and enjoy our islands’ beaches, restaurants, bars and music…but it takes dedication to offer your services to your country, no matter the way you choose to do it,” said Mr Ebanks.

As Captain Black Terrence or Terrence the Black, as he is also known, Mr Ebanks has represented our islands as an ambassador for tourism in the United States, Honduras and as far as Japan. He has been featured in numerous magazines locally and internationally, has attended the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association’s (DEMA) Trade and Marketing show courtesy of the Department of Tourism. DEMA alone gives him the opportunity to spread excitement surrounding Pirates Week to as many as 10,000 people per day. Mr Ebanks has even played host and tour guide to the Travel Channel, who were in Grand Cayman in search of information for its documentary on the infamous Blackbeard. Mr Ebanks told Cayman Weekly, a new focus for him is the recruitment of new and younger crew members. Expressing his encouragement to the youth of Cayman, he said he believes there must be a balance struck between the partying aspect of the festival and sharing our culture and heritage.

“It gets people going, and it’s an excellent marketing tool, [it’s] good for us to have heritage day but people come to be a part of the fantasy,” he said, explaining the pirate theme connects “outsiders” to our people and our people’s past in a tangible way.

Cable & Wireless to be sold on heels of Columbus take-over Cable and Wireless Communications (CWC) is promising faster growth and enhanced customer benefits from a proposed acquisition by Liberty Global announced this week, with it being business as usual right now for local operations in the Cayman Islands. The announcement comes on the heels of CWC’s merger with Columbus Communications this year. In the months following that move, the company has been rebranding from LIME to Flow across the Caribbean. Flow launched in the Cayman Islands less than a month ago. However, Cable and Wireless said it is in the long-term best interests of the company, its shareholders and employees to sell the business in a deal worth approximately US$8.2 billion to Liberty Global, an international cable television company. “By joining forces at this time, we combine our high growth assets in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the scale and complementary skills of a truly world class global player, materially improving our ability to offer leading products and services to customers in the region we serve,” said CWC in a release. The company said by adding Liberty’s strength and 1.5 million customers in Puerto Rico and Chile, backed by its own strengths in adjoining markets and in leading submarine and terrestrial fibre networks, together they expect to their customer and B2B [Business to Business] offers even faster. “Since we launched our new strategy two years ago, CWC has transformed itself into a leading regional quad play operator,” said CWC Chief Executive Phil Bentley. “The creation of our regional hub in Miami and the recent acquisition of Columbus accelerated our competitive positioning, whist at the same time generating significant value for our shareholders and enhanced service levels for our customers,” he added.

“The years ahead should bring new opportunities for further success, faster growth and enhanced customer benefits, built on the strong foundation we have created.” In the meantime, Flow Cayman Islands CEO Bill McCabe said as a joint entity they will combine the complimentary skills of both organisations, improving their ability to offer telecoms services in the region. “For the Cayman operation specifically it's business as usual until the deal is complete. We will continue with our plans to enhance the customer experience and continue to deliver innovative products such as the recently launched Flow TV product,” Mr McCabe said. Since the launch of Flow in the Cayman Islands, the company has promised to improve customer service, with more local representatives in addition to centralised call centres overseas. It has also boasted of the most modern television platform among the local providers, with customers having access to a cloud based service with more offerings. However, the company’s mobile customers were earlier this month unable to call 911 during an outage that lasted for several hours on the morning of 6 November.

Men and boys taking the International Men’s Day pledge last year (courtesy Family Resource Centre)

The importance of men in our communities The Cayman Islands will join 60 countries around the world in observing International Men’s Day tomorrow with activities aimed at “Making a Difference for Men and Boys”. The Family Resource Centre (FRC), working under the auspices of the Ministry of Community Affairs, has organised three events to highlight the important role men play in communities and their contributions as fathers, grandfathers and role models. “In celebrating International Men’s Day, we hope to identify areas in which we need to strengthen as a community. Hosting the events also serves to focus on men’s health and well-being; improve gender relations and improve gender equality. It can also help us to highlight discrimination against men and other male issues,” said FRC Coordinator Miriam Foster. Ahead of International Men’s Day, FRC representatives and guests will hold a roundtable discussion on Radio Cayman’s lunchtime show, Talk Today, from noon to 2:00 p.m. Members of the public are invited to share in the discussion. Also today, the Family Resource Centre will host a free workshop at its Compass Centre location on “Raising Resilient Children. Organisers said this will be an interactive family skills session, where parents and children will work together to unlock keys to overcoming different obstacles. Dinner will be provided for all participants. Then on Thursday, International Men’s Day, men and boys will be the guests of honour at a free event on from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at King’s Sports Centre on Crewe Road.

“Participants will enjoy all the facility has to offer including bowling, rock climbing and skating. In addition FRC staff will be on hand to offer tips on how men and boys can lead happier, healthier lives,” a government release stated. The FRC is also encouraging the public to visit its social media page (facebook.com/familyresourcecentre) and submit photos of men or boys making a difference in the community under #CaughtGivingBack. “These events offer a forum for men to come together with their sons, grandsons, nephews or even younger relatives to help them form relationships and hopefully close any existing gaps, one family at a time,” added Mrs Foster. For information on the events contact FRC at 949-0006 or email [email protected].

Smith Road re-opens as work continues The flow of traffic around George Town should flow a bit smoother with the full re-opening of Smith Road, after about five months of roadworks construction. Edison Jackson, a senior engineer with the National Roads Authority (NRA), told Cayman Weekly on Tuesday the work on Smith Road was about 95 per cent complete and work should be finished by the end of this week. The adjoining Humber Avenue extension was only about 20 per cent toward the finish line. While he was unable to provide a precise figure, Mr Jackson said the project undertaken by the NRA and Island Paving that was budgeted for $1.8 million was running “slightly over budget”.

Mark Bettencourt

Brac crash victims identified

A 48 year-old man remained in hospital Tuesday following a crash that killed two other people in Cayman Brac on Sunday evening. The man was flown to Grand Cayman in the hours after the crash and underwent surgery at Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town. He was said to be in a stable condition and was conscious and talking after surgery. Meantime, the identities of the two men killed when the Honda Odyssey minivan rolled over have emerged. They are Douglas Carney, 50, and Mark Bettencourt, 54, both American nationals. Mr Bettencourt was said to be visiting the Cayman Islands from Kansas, while it is understood Mr Carney resided on Cayman Brac. Initial police reports said there was only one death, but a subsequent update Sunday night indicated a second person was found dead. It appears Mr Bettencourt’s body was found under the vehicle when it was being moved. A team of investigators flew to the sister island Monday morning aboard the police helicopter and are continuing their probe into the crash. It remains unclear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. “Regarding the driver, all I can say right now is that we are investigating the crash and determining the aspects of it, including who was driving,” RCIPS spokeswoman Jacqueline Carpenter said in an email responding to questions from Cayman Weekly. 2015 has been a particularly deadly year on Cayman’s roads, with 12 fatalities, including four in Cayman Brac. A vehicle navigates the new mini-roundabout at the intersection with Anthony Drive.

Drug arrests after marijuana found on boat Four men have been arrested and charged on suspicion of importation of marijuana following an operation last weekend. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) said around 5:00 p.m. Friday, the Joint Marine Unit responded to the sighting of a suspicious vessel in the waters off East End by the Air Operations Unit while on patrol. The police vessel “Niven D”, with the help of the police helicopter, located the boat about a half mile off the coast of North Side. “The boat was searched, a quantity of ganja was uncovered, and two men, ages 48 and 52, of West Bay, and two men, ages 30 and 38, of Jamaica, were arrested on suspicion of importation of ganja,” said RCIPS Public Relations Officer Jacqueline Carpenter. She added that the 52 year-old from West Bay was also arrested on suspicion of human smuggling.

CAL’s new Saab aircraft christened in Cayman Brac Cayman Airways has started to phase in the use of its newest aircraft, after christening the Saab 340B+ at the Charles Kirkconnell International Airport in Cayman Brac last Friday. “This moment represents a culmination of months of planning. This 34-seater Saab 340 is a special aircraft and is the latest edition of this brand,” said Cayman Airways President and Chief Executive Officer Fabian Whorms. “It was fitting to name it VP CKI in memory of the late Captain Charles Kirkconnell. Intensive testing has been undertaken to ensure its pristine condition. Another SAAB 340 is also coming and this aircraft is on a lease to purchase arrangement. This is ours to be proud of,” he added. The inaugural flight was piloted by two Brackers, Captain Steve Scott and Ricky Whorms, along with officer Jean Castellion. Deputy Premier Moses Kirkconnell, who is also the minister responsible for tourism and transport, said recent developments including the expansion of the airport in Cayman Brac and adding new Cayman Airways routes have provided a stimulus for jobs. “Direct flights to Miami will commence on the 21st and on the 28th to Holguin, Cuba. More travel will increase, and businesses will grow as a catalyst for more jobs.

I thank my committee for their tireless efforts and sterling dedication towards this project,” said the representative for Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. “I am proud to announce that Cayman Airways hired nine new employees last year and many young Caymanians are getting jobs in the fire department. A total of 21 new jobs have been created as a result of this undertaking and the CAL board and management are to be highly commended for their role in this mission being accomplished,” Mr Kirkconnell added. Premier Alden McLaughlin also addressed the ceremony. “I am proud to head the administration that has made this a reality. This new aircraft will encourage more inter-island activity, as well as, increase in economic benefits. The aircraft provides a high level of comfort and capability,” he said. Mr Whorms said after a thorough evaluation, the Saab 340B+ aircraft was selected as an ideal aircraft to provide the necessary capacity and frequency for service between Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. “This pristine aircraft which was selected, with its low operating costs and fuel efficient engines, are expected to allow Cayman Airways to enhance our service to Cayman Brac,” he said. The new aircraft will replace the 30-seat Embraer E120, which has operated under a temporary lease arrangement with InterCaribbean Airlines.

In addition to increased seats, the Saab plane has more room for baggage and cargo on flights to the Brac. “I am a proud Bracker today to see the realisation of a long- held dream. This is history for us,” said Cayman Airways Marketing and PR Manager Olivia Scott Ramirez during her opening remarks, which were followed by a prayer by Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Sister Islands representative Juliana O’Connor-Connolly. After the speeches were concluded, Mr Kirkconnell and Ms O’Connor-Connolly performed the ribbon cutting. It was an action packed weekend for the swimming community- a 5k swim and two clinics for younger swimmers. The Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA) was pleased to host international swimmer Emily Brunneman, who was named the USA Swimming Female Open Water Swimmer of the Year by CSCAA Scholar All-America in 2010 and more recently, her experienced career has led her to be selected as the Unión Americana de Natación (UANA or the Amateur Swimming Union of the Americas) athlete representative for the open water technical committee. Also, on hand lending his expertise was Denny Ryther, Chairman of UANA. Mr Ryther heads a committee responsible for the preparation and execution of competitive and safe international open water swimming events. Along with Ms Brunneman, Mr Ryther held two clinics for young swimmers focusing on open water technique and skill sets swimmers should look to achieve to be successful in distance swimming. Together with 49 other swimmers, Emily competed in the 35th Annual Pirates Week 5K swim, sponsored by KPMG. From all accounts, it was a beautiful morning on Seven Mile Beach with lovely conditions for the swim.

Competitors ranging from young swimmers hoping to compete internationally were given the opportunity for some great experience navigating markers and contending with a slight current, to an older contender who never swam in an open water race and who was thrilled to compete in the four loop swim. Emily Brunneman maintained pace with local swimmers John Bodden and Eddie Webber for the first two loops pulling slightly ahead by the third loop. She won the race in a time of 1.05.10. Second and third place was well fought between John Bodden and Eddie Weber with Mr Bodden (1.06.41) edging out Mr Weber (1.06.42) by 1/100 of a second. Rory Barrett rounded out the top 3 male finishers in a time of 1.10.59. Completing the top three females finishers were Catriona MacRae (1.11.11) and Ria Plunkett (1.12.51). “This morning was a beautiful race and very well run! I saw a sea turtle, two huge stingrays and my favourite fish,” Ms Brunneman said after the swim. Representing KPMG at the swim was Tim Achtstatter, a director at the firm, who is very involved in the swimming community. He volunteered as a sea marshal and was on hand to present the awards to the swimmers. “KPMG is immensely proud to partner with CIASA, as we share the same vision, passion and determination for swimmers to excel. The development of the 5K swim has done extremely well over the years and we promote the growth and enthusiasm for this event and those who have participated,” Mr Achtstatter said. Race Director and CIASA Board Member, Sandy Hew commented, “Together with our sponsors, KPMG and Pirates Week, CIASA is proud to continue the tradition of the Pirates Week 5K swim. We also would like to thank Ann Stafford who has kept a wonderful history of swimming to include the 5K races. The original 5k swim held in 1980, organised by Raglan Roper, started at the George Town dock and finished at Galleon Beach (now the Westin/ Villas of the Galleon).” Full results are posted on www.ciasa.ky.

Mrs. Janet Watler, Director of NCU's Community Counselling and Restorative Justice Centre

NCU alumni launching local education initiative An opportunity is being provided for members of the Cayman Islands community to have input into an education initiative to be launched here next year. This is being done by the Cayman Chapter of the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) Alumni Association, also known as ACKy, as part of its agenda aimed at strengthening the Cayman community. “All interested members of the public, as well as all friends and alumni of NCU, are invited to attend the public meeting, at which Mrs. Janet Walters, director of NCU’s Community Counselling and Restorative Justice Centre (CCRJC), the developers of the programmes under consideration, will be presenting. The 19 November public meeting will be held at Cayman Academy, Walkers Road,” the group stated in a media release. A key anticipated outcome of the meeting tomorrow and other planned meetings is the prioritising of three different skills training exercises to respond to needs identified by the local chapter’s executive committee. “The seminars, one or more of which may initially be selected for implementation next year, will target, respectively, parents, youth, and/or young fathers/young men. The seminars vary in length, but most involve six or eight sessions of two hours each,” the group said. Commenting on the plans, ACKy President Patricia Ebanks said that her committee is excited about launching this first project in connection with the chapter’s goals. “The committee is elated at the prospect of filling needs in the Cayman community and ultimately transforming lives,” she said. At the meeting tomorrow evening, attendees will learn about the effectiveness of community intervention programmes such as those offered by the CCRJC and details of the three identified programmes. Organisers said the presenter is also expected to demonstrate some

of the skills and the way in which they are imparted in the seminars. The meeting will end with a question-and-answer period, in which attendees will have an opportunity to participate in programme selection and otherwise provide feedback. While here, Mrs Walters will participate in other meetings and talks, including a service at one of the Adventist churches on Saturday afternoon, to which members of all Adventist churches and other interested persons are invited. Church members and other guests will have an opportunity to have an input at that meeting, also. Director Walters said the training programmes are collectively aimed at achieving better informed and skilled parents; building stronger, more supportive, responsible families; improving parental effectiveness; reducing teenage pregnancies and abuse and neglect of children and youth; and developing stronger sense of self and a greater commitment towards self-development. The programmes are also designed to help decrease the number of “at-risk” youth and the resulting teenage delinquency and crime rates. Billed by the CCRJC as “empowerment programmes,” these training seminars have been conducted since 2010 by the nine-year-old community counselling centre. So far, the centre, which has attracted funding for its community outreach programmes from such financial powerhouses as the World Bank, has trained over 1,200 children, youth, young father/young men and parents. According to the CCRJC, 95 per cent of participants gave positive feedback and commended the centre for reaching out in the communities. NCU is the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s flagship institution of higher education administered in Mandeville, Jamaica. Jointly owned by Adventists in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Bahamas, NCU serves the higher educational needs of the north-western Caribbean. The CCRJC is the community outreach arm of the NCU, which offers variations of the programme in Jamaica and member countries. ACKy’s President Ebanks said that the community outreach programmes are in partial fulfilment of ACKy’s three-pronged agenda, which includes offering scholarships to qualified local students and contributing financially to NCU. She said that she had already held planning meetings with the Adventist Conference directors and that her committee would be approaching interested private sector sponsors to assist with next year’s implementation.
