PPRESIDENTRESIDENT’’SS MMESSAGEESSAGEIf I could, would you…

As they say in the car selling business, it’sover the curb and down the road. We arehalf way through the year’s activities, and areseeing many new faces, new cars, and evennew colors on old cars like Rex and Pat’s 911(now blue). RMR and AMR have introducednew events like the Aspen weekend withtrack driving, a concours charity andIndependence Pass tour. AMR presented theLa Junta DE and 35th year anniversary din-ner as well as the multi-day tour with a steamrailroad ride, the RMR membership meetingmoved to the Shelby museum for dinner, andthe “Girlie Men” cut a new rug at LadiesDay, just to name a few.

Each event has new twistsbecause new chairs make theirown ideas part of the programwithin the proven frameworkof event organization that theclub provides. Also, experi-enced organizers keep theevents different and fresh bybuilding on successful experi-ences and listening to plenty ofinput from members.

One of the challenges for theboard is to provide a freshexperience when you bringyour Porsche to an RMR event.Another is to reach a widerange of members with variety, value and friendly hospitality.Needless to say the board doesn’t think upevery event, so we are always open to newideas, new people and new expectations.

Oftentimes a new event is suggested and puton by a member in the hopes others will likea similar experience. Since we all like driv-ing our Porsches, if you have a favorite activ-ity with your Porsche, a place to drive, arestaurant to visit, a picnic spot, an autocrossdesign in your head, a charity to benefit, it isvery likely others will have fun joining you ifyou invite them. It’s easy to have some com-pany with your event idea, and get the sup-port of RMR behind you.

We are setting up the 2006 season calendar ofevents right now. We coordinate with AMRto schedule events, and having plenty ofevent ideas early on helps. Opportunity iscalling for chairs and event ideas for nextyear! Moreover, the RMR board membersdoing the schedule, David Speights andSusan Bucknam, will be asking for yourinput this month.

One of the highest responses to our member-ship questionnaire every year is, “We wantmore tours.” Surely, some of the tour folksare ready to step up and plan a dinner drivein scenic Colorado! A breakfast jaunt to thefoothills would be welcome, too. RMR isinvited back to Mt. Rushmore again in 2006

to join the Dakota Region, how about a tour-master building on last year’s route for this?Do you have a multi-day trip in mind or agreat resort or B&B to visit? How about tak-ing us on your best Porsche back-roads nextseason? Near or far, a colorful line of fellowPorsches and drivers is waiting to turn yourdrive into an event.

For driver education events, which are thebackbone of RMR in attendance and in rev-enue to the club, circumstance insures a dif-ferent schedule in 2006. We definitely willnot have Second Creek Raceway next year,so other tracks will take its place, and other

events will be planned. Possibilities includetracks at Aspen, Continental Divide Raceway,La Junta, and Pikes Peak InternationalRaceway. Sounding interesting? No Times,Fast Times, Old Times or New Times, let’sdrive something fun next year.

A visiting DE troupe would be fun whereRMR attends a nearby (ok, kind of far away)PCA region’s DE with a large group of driv-ers and cars to experience a new track andmeet other PCAers. Think about Hallett inKansas, Sandia Motor Speedway just west ofAlbuquerque, the new track in Utah or RoadAmerica. Let’s hit the road for your favoritetrack next year and try a DE someplace else.

We might do more autocrosses next year withsome new twists. After all,the Halloween autocrosscourse design has includedcats, witches and ghosts to becreative and fun. The parkinglot at DIA is big enough foryour design. Should we goback to the Colorado HighwayPatrol training facility onSouth Table Mountain? Let usknow what sounds fun and wewill get it done with our greatvolunteers.

So, put on your thinking hel-mets and suggest a new eventidea. Next time you seeSusan, David or me, let usknow what you think. Better

yet, send us an email this month so we canget your idea on the schedule for 2006.

I wonder if PCA insurance would let us try adrifting event? If we did, PCA might usethat car salesman expression, “You’re taillights!” Then again, it is always good to trysomething new because we can probably pullit off.

EEVENTVENT CCALENDARALENDARAt least a couple of you read my musings last month. I receivedsome great pictures. Keep those cards and letters coming. If Idon’t run your pictures or stories in the next issue, I am just savingthem until the snow flys. Then pictures of those warm days, cruis-ing in the sun in our Porsches, will help the snow melt so we canget back to summer driving. (Of course some of us put snow tireson our steeds and drive all year.)

I just received the results of the Parade newsletter competition.Newsletters competed against regions of simular size. The judgingcategories included Layout, Masthead, Editorial Commentary,Event Publicity, Event Follow-up, Contributions by Members,Photography, and Technical Articles. While not in the top 3, RMRPorsche scored well in all categories except editorial and technical.I have added this bit of rambling to cover the editorial section. Toachieve the technical area, I will be calling on some of you to sub-mit a short article with a technical tip of the month. If you wouldlike to volunteer, drop me an email [email protected].

Some of you may have noticed the addition of color in the lastnewsletter. This will make space available for color ads. If anyoneis interested in spicing up there ad with color, contact MichaelElliott at [email protected].

“There is a fifth dimension beyond thatwhich is known to man. It is a dimensionas vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light andshadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This isthe dimension of imagination. It is an areawhich we call ... THE TWILIGHT ZONE.”

Ryan and RebeccaHiatt, average youngAMR members whoattended a member-ship meeting inColorado Springs lastnight and on the wayhome took a detour.

“Most of us on wak-ing in the morning know exactly where weare; the rooster or the alarm clock bringsus out of sleep into the familiar sights, sounds, aromas of home and the comfort ofa routine day ahead.

“Not so with our young friends. This willbe a day like none they’ve ever spent - andthey’ll spend it in the Twilight Zone.”

Pueblo will never feel the same afterAugust 7th and 8th. You will be changedforever by what you experience at PMI.

The moral of what you’ve just read isclear: if you drive, drive fast. And if yourfriends drive fast, drive faster for you may

find yourself in the won-drous closed loop knownas Pueblo Motorsportspark (A.K.A. theTwilight Zone).

“You’re travelingthrough another dimen-sion, a dimension notonly of sight and sound

but of mind; a journey into a wondrousland whose boundaries are that of theimagination. Next stop: THE TWILIGHTZONE.”

Sunday's portion of the Aspen Weekendbrought club members a Concours at thebase of Aspen Highlands, one the valley'sfour ski mountains. Held in the morningprior to the Rally back to the Denver area, the concours was low-key, intentionallylacking the drill and scoring of a formalconcours event.

That said, preparation for the event wasserious and started on Saturday whenDetailers Paradise and Zymol Southwestsponsored a wash and prep event in theparking lot of the Inn at Aspen. Others, unable to partake, cleaned up their vehiclesaround town and at the event. Sundaydawned partly cloudy with a threat ofshowers.

30 cars were loaded into the Plaza at thebase of Aspen Highlands, each carefullyplaced by representatives of the AspenHighlands Merchant Association to protectan intricate snow melt system underneaththe bricks. Each car received a carpet sam-ple placed under the car to ensure anydrops of fluid from the engine area would-n't make it to the street layer, maintaining

the pristine feeling of the Plaza.

Clouds darken at times and some raindropsfell, but in general, the weather cooperated.Against the backdrop of the decoratedVillage Plaza, live music was provided byJim Thorburn, a club member whoserecording label, Chunky and Brownie sup-plied the musical artists. A copy of Jim'sCD, CoCoNuts was included with each giftbag for show entries. As a result, the cars, venue and music was superb!

The cars indeed were very impressive andas anticipated, the Aspen valley garagesopened up and the machinery came out tocompliment our turnout. We had a Super-90, 356-B, 911s from varying years anddesign including Cabs & Targas, 944S2,951, 993tt and 993tt S (2 of the original180!), Boxster, Boxster S, 996 Turbo, 996GT-2 (2), 996 GT-3 (2) and a Carrera GT.Crowds gathered and interest focused onthe rare sighting of the CGT that had sere-naded us at the Woody Creek trackSaturday with it's song. An extremely finecollection of cars was appreciated by all inattendance.

Prizes were awarded to Brian & BetsyLeach of Aspen for a 1989 944 Turbo thatlives on the streets in town (1St Place),Don Seaton of Glenwood Springs, CO witha 1961 356-B, a barn restoration project(2d Place), and a 1974 911S Targa with310k miles, that just two months earlierhad been rear-ended at 30mph, a survivor(3rd Place).

The Colorado Make-A-Wish Foundationwas the beneficiary of the show, with carshow registration and donations goingtowards the cause. We raised approximate-ly $1,400 on behalf of the group frommembers participating, family and memori-al contributions.

Many thanks to the RMR/AMRMembership in supporting the event andbringing some fantastic cars out to play, theDarnauer Group, Aspen HighlandsMerchant Association, Aspen SkiingCompany, merchants who donated lunch toparticipants and product to the gift bags. Afinal special thanks to Norma and everyonefor coming out and helping the cause!

Aspen Weekend 2005 is but a memory. But it will be one to remember for sometime. Greg Volan’s chalk talk session onFriday was informative, entertaining andfun.

Woody Creek was in excellent shape andproved a wonderful challenge. Many driv-ers described if afterwards as “a momen-tum track”, “it favors smooth”, and “had agreat rhythm”.

Saturday’s Italian buffet was superb, fol-lowed by a captivating Janet Guthrie (first

female race car driver at the Indy 500 andthe first woman to compete in NASCAR).Afterwards, she signed copies of her book, just published in May.

Sunday, Grant Bayless put on a great carshow and concours (which included anewly delivered metalflake black CarreraGT). Kent Miller led a lively trip backhome over Independence Pass.

The track manager and private memberswere so impressed with the club’s courte-ousness and enthusiasm, that they invited

us back again next year.

A special thanks (in addition to thosenamed above) to Norma Nada, DavidRossiter, Randy Hoch, Alan Fritze, DavePetitti, Pat Newman, Susan Bucknam, Bob& Pat Dent, Andy Forberg, Rex Heck, BillCurnow, and 3 R Racing (our generoussponsor). Thanks also to everyone whowent above and beyond (there were manyof you!) to help Barry and me (event chairnovices no more) put together a greatweekend!

Fifty-one lady drivers had it “their way” onJuly 9 at Second Creek Raceway duringRMR’s 6th annual Ladies’ Day driver edu-cation extravaganza. 100+ degree temper-atures did not stop both experienced andnovice drivers from taking full advantageof the open track to test their limits andhone their driving skills. An equal num-ber of guys were on hand and pitched in tolend their support as tech inspectors, pitcrews, instructors, corner workers and gen-eral, all-around cheer leaders.

Aptly named Girls Just Wanna…at LadiesDay, this year’s event followed the wellestablished tradition of providing a varietyof outlets for challenge and fun in additionto driving:• A cadre of lady volunteers providedstrong leadership and expertise in key com-mittee positions to keep the event on time, safe and enjoyable. • The likes of VWs, Subarus, Beemers

and Audis mixed it up with Porsches asseveral ladies exercised their option of tak-ing their favorite non-Porsche cars out onthe track.• Chair massage was a big favorite againthis year to relieve tensions.

• And the party! Folks, this was not yourordinary Beer 30. Try a menu of home-made avocado salsa and panini sandwichesfrom the kitchen of Helen Saucier.

• And finally, the piece de resistance (orwas it the coup de grace?), Ann Mussman-Quigley and her Ladies’ Day Girlie Menreturned bigger and even better than lastyear’s debut with a poignantly interpretivedance rendition of , “Give ‘em that ole raz-zle dazzle”. Alana, Mikela, Stephanie,Wilhemena, Adriana and Deidre, you hadus rolling in the aisles. We will never bethe same.

Particularly gratifying were the unsolicitedcomments from so many return and newattendees professing that Ladies Day is,indeed, their most favorite of favoriteevents. Big smiles and friendship were theorder of the day. For the proof, go to theRMR web site to see all the photos record-ing the event. Thanks to all who pitchedin. Long live Ladies Day!

Lest we forget, this event is all about theChildren’s Program for CP of Colorado,Inc. Every effort, every dollar, all of thetime, energy and talent that goes into put-ting on this event, is for the Children! Itgoes without saying that the staff of CPare, unquestionably, the most dedicatedpeople whose every concern is for the goodof their programs. They are all undeniablythe very BEST – and we thank you forwhat you do. Judy Hamm, and SandiMariani, and Liz Neafus-Stenzel are amongthe most caring, dedicated and hard work-ing people that we know. But also, theConcours absolutely could not have beenas successful as it was without the enor-mous effort by all of the volunteers, spon-sors, car owners and spectators. So for allof your help, Thank You!

In addition, for each member of theCommittee, all of you who represent vari-ous car clubs in the Denver area, for all ofthe hours in meetings, and especially foryour willingness to help, Thank You! Now,a very special THANKS to Jim and DebbieWalters, Co-chairs of the event, withoutwhom the Concours would not have beenthe success that it was. They are hardworking, dedicated to this cause, veryorganized, and besides all that – they arewonderful people. So THANK YOUagain.

Congratulations --- 22nd Annual Concoursd’Elegance and Sport Car Show!!!!!Everyone agrees: This was one of the verybest shows that we’ve had so far. Althoughthere have been many memorable ones inthe past, this one was perhaps specialbecause it was within a hairs-breath ofbeing cancelled due to the rain on Fridayand Saturday. And then to have such anunbelievable beautiful day on Sunday withan incredible turnout, it’s simply --- well, wonderful!

In case you don’t recall, the Friday beforethe show was one of the worst weatherdays Denver has seen in a long time; torna-

do watches were all over town, warningsirens were heard, the wind was unbeliev-ably strong, localized hail and floodingwere not an uncommon sights. AlthoughSaturday’s weather was much less severe, the rain would not let up. Even though theweather forecast for Sunday was fair andsunny, it would not have been the first timethat such a prediction was wrong. So upuntil about 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, “TheCommittee” was still indecisive as towhether to proceed with the show or not.The big consideration was, of course, notonly the weather, but what the cars woulddo to the beautiful Arapahoe CommunityCollege lawn that was totally soaked.

The decision was made to proceed withplacing the cars on a very large parking lotadjacent to the college. However, TomScott, who was in charge of car placement, could not accommodate the cars that werealready registered, in addition to the spon-sor tents and 30 display cars, to fit theparking lot. Sooooo, again the committeemet early Saturday evening and proceededwith planning the layout for the cars on thelawn at ACC. As it turned out, a very gooddecision! Go ahead with the show as origi-nally planned, and say a little prayer!

Let us give a very special thank you toAlan Fritze, the RMR equipment chairman, who interrupted his Saturday dinner toreturn to ACC and bring the flags, stakesand markers and to assist in preparing thesite layout.

Then Sunday: Beautiful, mild temperatures, and the biggest turnout yet, a total of threehundred twenty-eight cars, two hundredseventy-one which were pre-registered,including eighty-three Porsches, plus sixty-seven cars which showed up that were notexpected. Miracles happen, and space wasmade available to accommodate all thosewho decided to wait till Sunday morning toparticipate.

Of course, each and every participant was

welcome --- it’s all about helping the chil-dren’s program to benefit Cerebral Palsy ofColorado, grossing $76,695.00. WOW!!!Well, that’s thanks to all of you who partic-ipated either by preparing and bringingyour fine car, the very special judges, all ofthe volunteers, and those individuals whocame through the gates to appreciate theunbelievable array of very fine automo-biles.

It is my belief that since the very first carmade it’s way on the American roadways, that people have had a love affair with theautomobile. There is always a lot of histo-ry in viewing a car show: from the veryearliest to the very latest, most modern, precious (!) cars.

Comcast! Well what can we say, otherthan your $10,000 donation is wonderfullyand unbelievably generous! Comcast wasthe Corporate Sponsor this year, and theirfabulous contribution kick-started the suc-cess of the 2005 Concours d’Elegance.Thank you COMCAST. Due to Comcast, and also to the generosity of the numerousother sponsors, this year’s Concours was$42,445 ahead before registrations evenstarted coming in! Without the contribu-tions of these wonderful individuals andcorporations, the Concours would not havebeen the grand success that it was. Pleasetake a moment to review all of the spon-sors, which are listed in the 2005 EventProgram, and please utilize their serviceswhenever you can. There are no wordsmore profound with which we can expressour gratitude other than to applaud you andgive a very, very special THANK YOU toEACH and EVERY ONE of you.

And, speaking of sponsors, Phil Doty andBob Lewis are the two individuals whowere primarily responsible for the superbsponsor’s results this year. Thank you verymuch, Phil and Bob!!!

Editor: This month’s report finds the intrepidGutowski team headed to the Mid-Ohio circuit, home in recent years of the SCCA Runoffs.Paul describes the challenges that he and Kimfaced………………..

Mid Ohio May 13, 14, 15

“Where the Hell are we?” It was Kim on theradio, sharing my exact sentiments on our sec-ond lap of the circuit. The time spent studyingtrack maps and watching last year’s Grand-AmCup race from Mid Ohio did nothing to prepareus for the driving experience. It had paid off forRoad America, Brainerd, Laguna Seca. . . butnot here. We expected room between the cor-ners to settle the cars and to prepare for the nextturn, but no. Except for one short and one longstraight, you are constantly turning. Also, televi-sion does not accurately depict the elevationchanges, which often change abruptly in themiddle of the corner.

That being said, this is an amazing track, Ibelieve the most challenging that we have driv-en so far. Past the start/finish, sweeping leftunder the bridge and slightly uphill to theKeyhole. We ran the chicane just before it, sothe 180 became more like a 240degree turn.Patience here, as the track falls from under youhalf way through and too much of anything willput you off. Down the long straight, about135mph, and brake hard to the famousMadness section. Force it through the right turnfaster than you would like and the steep uphilland a left foot brake will catch you as you huckit over to the left at the top- unfortunately, thereis a peak at the crest and the exit is off camber.

Down you go, immediately to the right at thebottom, then left and hold it tight inside and letthe wheel unwind as the car launches over thehill and brake hard for the 90 degree right, which is also peaked at the crest and the wall isbeckoning you. You get the idea. Your neck willbe sore here.

Due to a clerical error (mine), Kim and Iwere not signed up for the Friday Test/Tune andwere able to slip into the fast DE group with thepromise that we would behave. Four sessions offast touring with an occasional 2 or 3 unob-structed turns, but were quite happy to be on thetrack at all. Saturday was full rain in the morn-ing and showers in the afternoon. Kim wasstylin’with a new set of Hoosier wets and I wasleft begging Corey and Chris to unbuckle mysways. Poor Corey was soaked the remainderof the day, but even with a damp track my frontend held better through the two fast sweepersand a valuable lesson was learned. The trackwas described as ‘disastrous’ in the wet and toavoid the concrete patches at all cost, howeverthe patches have recently been grooved and thisis where the grip now is. It was exhilarating toleave the concrete exiting the fast turn onesweeper and 4 wheel drift across the track, onlyto be caught by another patch at the track-outpoint. In the dry, drifting the back end onlydestroyed one’s tires. There is definitely a linethrough this track and even in the wet it beganto make sense. As is the case at most of thegood tracks, a return visit will lead to workingon the subtleties and quicker times.

Sunday was cold but sunny and finally, dryrace conditions. Kim again was in the fast racegroup with all of the Cup cars and continued tobe frustrated by those that horsepower awaydown the straights and hold her up in the cor-

ners. It is the curse of the 2S class and a changeto slicks may help with exit speed and less timelost on the straights. Sometimes we questionour decision not to have Rothsport build ‘sprint’motors with the significant increase in powerbut reliability is key when the cars are alwayson the road and the mechanic is in Portland.

An interesting observation regarding theweekend was the sanity of the drivers both inthe wet conditions and dry. Except for theFarnbacher camp, the big teams that were pres-ent- TRG and Kelly Moss, for example- hadonly a few drivers. Often it seems as if thosedrivers feel pressured to drive as professionallyas their support makes them appear- even ifthey do not have the skills. At Sebring andRoad Atlanta, these teams had heaps of cars andthere were heaps of wrecks. However, I do notthink that this bleeds over to the non-Cup cargroups, and at those events there were plenty ofaccidents there as well. There were relativelyfew hits through the weekend and I felt that thequality of the driving was better than most racesthat we have done. It was a pleasure to be a partof it.Colorado represented well in the fast groupwith Chris Cervelli qualifying 4th overall (1st inclass) and Andy Wilzoch 5th overall. Theirlevel of preparation and skill behind the wheelare evident at every race that we see them. Inthe sprint race, Chris finished 2nd overall andAndy 4th. Chris has a past that includes profes-sional seat time and yes, true professionals- notthose that buy a seat- are noticeably faster.Andy is a little outgunned in his Supercup Carcompeting against the GT3 R, RS and RSR’s,yet was second in class. Kim had a great startand passed several cars in the first few laps untilgetting stuck behind one that she couldn’t safely

get by. As a result, a few of the cars that shehad earlier passed caught her up and got by onthe straight. She was frustrated, but had severalgood battles in the process.

I had a tremendous race with four of uslocked in battle, nose to tail, with experienceddrivers that I have come to trust. It had beenawhile since I had so much fun behind thewheel. Unfortunately, a car pummeled the walland a full course yellow was issued and the lastcar in our group missed it and passed when welifted. Upon return to green, a corner workervigorously waved a black flag as the four of uscame through and the first car dove into thepits. I was able to see the starter’s station andno flag, so continued. Halfway around anotherblack flag was waved at the now three of usand I lifted and was passed by 4 cars beforearriving at the original flag station, where nowa number board was displayed with the offend-ing driver’s number. I was able to pass 2 of thecars back and finished third overall. A proudmoment (that we missed as we were racing tothe airport) was the awarding of the ‘Worker’sChoice” award for me, for the corner worker’sfavorite car to watch over the weekend.

Next will be Watkins Glen, where a largeColorado contingency will be present. We hopethat that weekend will be safe and successfulfor those that travel so far to be there. . .

Editor: And so it was (mostly) for those of uswho brought our skills to the fabled “Glen”.But due to space limitations that saga will haveto wait until next month to be told……….
