Ourhopeisthatthiswillbetheplacetobein2017.Hereandno-whereelse.Celebratingacity’sfoundationand500yearsofhistoryisarareoppor-tunity.Anopportunitytotakeafreshlookatourcity—alookthatmightsurpriseus.Achancetoshowtheworldwhatweareandwhatwecando.Thisanniversaryisanunmissableoccasiontoshowwhatthissurprisingcityisreallylike.

Inspring2017,asLeHavremarksits500th anniversary, visual art-ists,designers,graphicartists,stagedirectors,novelists,willfollowinthewakeofNiemeyerandMonettoreinterpretthissurprisingcity,torevealittoEurope…andperhapseventoitself.Whenyouarriveinthecity,ontheVolcanTheaterside,youenteranopen-airmonumentwithPorteOcéanelocatedatthebottomend;herethebeachisfrequentedbyeasy-goingbatherslookingatthehorizonasthebiggestcontainershipsintheworldgoby.
LeHavreisaseriesofstrangeimageslikethis.Itisaphotogeniccitythatseducesartistsassoonastheysetfoothere.Theyarewonoverbyitslight-whichhasbecomeacliché-butaboveall,byitsatmosphere,whichtheworksofartonofferwillbetaskedwithrevealing.Howdoyourecreateanatmosphere,repro-ducethedepthofacity,throughartisticgesturesthatendeavortomakeitdance.LeHavrewasrebuiltinthe1950sbyarchitectAugustePerretandhisworkshop,andwaslistedasaUNESCOworldheritagesitein2005.Itclearlydeservestobecomeone of the most desirable urban tourism destinations in France.
Yetthecityneedstobeunderstood,tobeloved,tobeputonstage,andweneedtoidentifythepeoplethatgiveitalltheirenergyandtheirtalent,weneedtobebold,butfair,withthecity,tobringoutallitsstrangenessanditsevi-dent poetry.

Tour 3: The Steps
Tour3,‘TheSteps’,connectstherebuiltdowntownareawiththeheightsofthecity.Visitorsareinvitedtojourneybackintimeonthefunicularrailwayortakethestepsthatpunctuate‘thehill’uptotheolderbuildingsandArtDecovillasthatsurvivedthe1944bombings.Amongotherfeatures,thistourhigh-lightsthevibrantcreativitythatreignsatFortdeTournevilleandtheworksofartcreated by Julien Berthier, Stéphane Thidet and Vincent Ganivet for Le Portique, thecontemporaryartcenterintheDantondistrict.

TheMuMamuseuminLeHavre-Gilles'nativecity-givesPierreetGilles' carte blanche' for the second opus of a major retrospective in collaboration withtheIxellesmuseuminBrussels(whichhoststheexhibitionfromFebruary16to May 14 2017).
TheLeHavreexhibitionincludesmorethan80worksfromthelate1970stothepresentday,broughttogetherfromsomemajorinstitutionsandpres-tigiousprivatecollections.Theimages,manyofwhichhavegainediconicstatus,aredividedintothemes,thewholeformingawonderfullyrichvisualcorpus.
Forty years ago, PierreCommoyandGillesBlanchardmet andformed their duo, Pierre et Gilles, pretty much immediately. Forty years of romantic andartisticcomplicity,resultinginthecreationofasetofportraitsthatcombinephotographyandpainting,nourishedbyartandpopularcultureandthathavenowgainediconicstatus.Madonna,Jean-PaulGaultier,StromaeandIsabelleHuppert,alongwithfriendsdressedassoldiersandsailors,haveallposedforthecouple,immortalizedbythelensthenidealizedbythepaintbrushinaglorious,inimitablestyledrawingonreferencestomythology,religion,fairytales,butalwaysfirmlysetintoday’srealworld.
TheMuMaprovidesawonderfulsetting,wherePierreetGilleshavealsocreatedaspecialinstallationinthemuseum’smainnave,usingthecity'scharacteristicbeachcabines.Onthegroundfloor,theygivetheirowninterpre-tationoftherichcollectionshunginthemuseum.Andforabetterunderstand-ingoftheduo’shistorywithLeHavre,thereisacabinetofwonderspresentingasetofunusualpersonalobjects,drawingsandworksfromtheiryouth,alongwithcanvasesbylocalpainters,allshowcasedinawaythatonlyPierreetGillescouldcomeupwith.
Anunmissableeventfor2017andanopportunitytoseeorreexpe-riencethecityofLeHavreanditsemblematicportfromthesingularperspectiveof Pierre et Gilles.

TheArtHistoryisintimatelylinkedwithtechnologicalprogress.Asearlyasthe19thcentury,AdaLovelaceimaginedmachinescapableofpoeticcreation.JeanTinguelycreatedhisownseriesof‘artist’machinesinthe1950s.Today,algorithmsareeverywhereandtoolsforcreationhaveintegratedformsofartificialintelligence.
Somehead-spinningquestionsarethusbeingasked:canartisticproductionbe«programmed»torespondtothepredictablecriteriononthemar-ket?Aremachinesalsocapableofcreativityorevensensitivity,asPhilipK.Dick’ssciencefictionsuggests?Willmachinesevenreplaceartistsoneday?
The Smart Factory exhibition curated/thought up by CharlesCarcopino,tacklesthesequestionsviainstallationsillustratingthecreativepro-cessbutconcealingtheartists’presence.Spectatorsaregiventheroleofmuse,theirpresenceinfluencingtheartbeingcreated.

LePortiquewillhostashowfeaturingthreeartists:JulienBerthier,Vincent Ganivet and Stéphane Thidet. They have in common to be as much at easeinterveninginthepublicspaceasdisplayingtheirworksinartvenues.Thethreeofthemhaveaknackforfindingnewusesformaterials,tocreatepowerfulpoeticandarchitecturalworksofart.
For A Summer in Le HavretheywillcasttheirworksaroundthecityaswellasincontemporaryartcenterLePortique.Theshowwillbeanopportu-nitytobetterknowtheirworkandtodiscovertheirin situpieceswhichpromisealivelyandinventivedialoguewiththevenue’svolumes.Constructionsystemsand ladders for Vincent Ganivet, piles of confetti for Stéphane Thidet, and ab-surd,bitinghumorfromVincentBerthier…Playingwithshapesandscales,theseartisticinterventionspromisetochallengeourperceptionandrelationtothedaily life.

Normandie, Vietnam, Île-de-France, Tahitien, Georges Philippar, France, Ville d'Alger, Pasteur, Washington, Gange, Mariette Pacha…ineachnameringsthememoryoflegendaryoceanlinerthatoncefrequentedLeHavre'sport.Bornamidstlightandpride,theysometimesfelltotragicfates,setafire,guttedandsunk...TheshipssetforthbyFrenchcompanieslikeLaCompagnieGénéraleTransatlantiqueorLesMessageriesMaritimessailedtheseasandoceans,car-ryingmillionsofwomenandmentofar-flungdestinations.Manyatracecanbefoundofthesegiantsoftheoceansandlifeaboard:photos,objects,documents,films,etc.,whichFrenchLinescollectsandconservesinLeHavre.InthemlieasmuchabouthistorywithacapitalHasaboutthepersonaleverydayofthese“floatingcities”.
Forthisexhibition,theimmenseships,truefeatsoftechnologybackinthedayandnowextinct,havebowedouttothescalemodelsdepictingthem--invaluablemodelsmeticulousintheirdesignandvaryingindimension.Broughtoutoftheirboxesandtogetherforthefirsttime,theseminiaturelinerssailthehall,deckedoutasanoceanfortheoccasion.Theytraveltheirroutesconnecteduptotheircarryingcases,conjuringupimagesofthethousandsofroundtripsmadewhentheywerethefaceofmaritimetransport.Eachmodelisabitofsilentsolitudemovingacrossspace.Imaginarylinesintersect,delin-eateandbringoutthelatitudesandlongitudesthatformtheblueprintofthismaritimehistory,thusbringingbacktolifeeachshipsothattheycantelltheirtalesofdisappearedworlds.

TheMarmottanMonetmuseuminParishashonoredLeHavre’sMuMa–AndréMalrauxmodernartmuseumwiththeloanofImpression, soleil levant,ClaudeMonet’semblematicpainting,whichwillthusreturntoitscityoforiginforthedurationofanexhibition.ItwasindeedinLeHavrethattheimpres-sionistartistpaintedhissceneofaportenshroudedintheearlymorningcolorsin1872.Withthearrivaloftherailwayin1847,puttingthecityjustafewshorthoursawayfromParis,LeHavrebecameachoicedestinationforartists.Intheirsearchfornewsubjects,theyfoundawonderfulsourceofinspirationhere.Tothewest,thereistheseasideresortthatemergedwiththenewtrendforbathing,withitsbeachcabines,bathers,casinoandalsothealwayschangingsightoftheseaandthesky.Totheeast,theindustrialport,riggedoutwithfloodgates,cranesandwarehouses.
WhethertheycameuponLeHavrebychanceorchosetovisit,art-istsstartedtoarrivefromtheRomanticperiodonwardsandweresensitivetothemultiplecity’sfacets.Inthe19thcentury,landscapepaintingwasfinallyrec-ognizedasadistinctgenreratherthanjustthebackdropforahistorical,myth-ologicalorreligiousscene,andthepainterswhocametoLeHavrefoundplentysubjectsofstudy.Practicesevolvedastechniquesandmaterialschanged.Artistsmovedoutoftheirworkshopstoworkinthefield,toexperiencenatureorimmersethemselvesinmodernlife,andtheyweregratefulforthelighterequipmentattheirdisposal.Watercolorsthentubesofpaint,andsoonaftercameras,madeitmucheasiertocapturemovement,thefleetingandthetransient…Therewasamultitudeofnewperspectivesandnewintereststobeexplored.Subjectssug-gestinganotionofspeedortransformationpresentedrealchallenges.Andwhatisamorebeautifulchallengethantryingtofixonthecanvasalandscapeinthealwayschanginglights,asthesunrisesorgoesdown?
The exhibition Impression(s), Soleil has the ambition to be a remind-erofthisperiod.Itwillbringtogethermorethan30otherworksthatcamebeforeorafterthismasterpiece,butallwiththesamecityanditslightsastheirsubject.JosephMallordWilliamTurner,GustaveLeGray,EugèneBoudin,RaoulDufyandFélixVallottonwillbeonMonetsidestogiveustheiruniquevisionofLeHavretranscendedbythelightingeffects.
Tomarkthe500th anniversary of the foundation of Le Havre, the ex-hibitionrecallshowdeeplyartistswereinspiredbythecity.Italsoquestionsthecreativeprocess.Howdoesanartistmanagetocaptureafleetingmoment,repro-duceapersonalimpressionorsharetheemotionfeltbeforeasightthathasal-waysfascinatedpeople?Howdotheyportraythepoetryoftheearth’sdawn?Andwhatofthisfascinationwithholdingontothefinalflamboyantmomentsfromthetime to the sun starts to set until it disappears?
ClaudeMonet’sImpression, soleil levantwillbebackinLeHavretomarkthisoccasion,thusgoingonshowattheplacethatinspiredthepainting.Visitorswillalsobeabletomarvelatimpressionsoflightfromaroundtheworlddepicted by a number of other major artists.

‘TheLove Loveisaboatthatwasfoundshipwreckedandaffection-atelydonatedbyitsformerowners,thencutinhalfandweighteddownwithanewkeeltomaintainitssternoutofthewater,soitremainsata45°angleasifitisabouttosink…Thestrangerepetitioninthenameoriginallygiventothesmall1980sfamilysailboatnowhasanambiguous,worryingringtoit,tosaytheleast.
The Love Loveisthusapermanentshipwreck.Astillimageofaboatcapturedinthefinalsecondsbeforeitdisappears.Yettheboatdoesn'tsinkandthismomentsuspendedintimecastsdoubtonthetragedyunfolding.Bestofall,theboatsailsinthisposition.Takeacloserlookandyou’llseeasound,functional,recreationalcraft,withitsseatintherightposition,itsenginesandevenaladdersoyougoforaswim.

It canbeadmiredatBassinduRoy, theharborbasinover-lookedbythestatueofFrancisI,thekingwhofoundedthecity.ArtistBaptisteDebombourgspenttimeexploringthetracesleftbythemonarchwhobroughttheItalianRenaissancetoFrance.Amonghisnumerouschâteaux,therewasBlois*:there,theking’schamberisbedeckedfromfloortoceilinginrosettesandotherincongruousadornments,mirroringtheking’ssupremacy.BaptisteDebombourgtookinspirationfromthechamber’sornamentstocreateametal-licstructuresetintotheharborbasin’swalls.Astheweeksgoby,theebbandflowofthetidebringmussels,oystersandseaweed,whichbecomecaughtinthestructureandhangthere,revealingtheregalmotifsinalltheirsplendor.Inshort,theartisthasinventedtheFrenchseasidegarden.

Itisaworkofincredibleparadoxes,themetallicgiantsgivingoffanunalterableimpressionoflightness.Theirhardrightanglesaredefied,al-leviated by the curves of the structure. The containers, usually lined up on the cargoshipsorneatlystackedonthequays,areupendedhere.Asifseizedbyafrantic desire for freedom.

“I‘landed’inLeHavreforthefirsttimeinmylifeinFebruary2016.IstillrememberthosefirstfewminuteswhenIsteppeddownfromthetrainandstartedtoexplorethecity,andwhenInoticeditsveryspecialscent.
ThiswasthebeginningofataskIhadbeenset,aninvestigationyoumightcallit.Myjobwastoseekoutlively,authentic(inthebestsense)barsandphotographtheirowners.
Iwanderedaround,visitingonfootasIliketodo,stoppingtotalktothelocalsinthestreetandthenIstartedtogointoafewplaces.Idranktoomuchcoffee,Idranktoomanybeers–it’seasytodoherewherepeoplearegen-erousandwherethepersonnexttoyouatthebarwilloftenbuyyouadrink,evenifyouonlymetafewminutesago.Timegoesbyhere,likeeverywhereelse,butit’sdifferent;youtalkaboutanythingandeverythingwiththeotherpeopleatthebar,youreadthenewsandyoushareyourown…there’snoneedforahypnoticTVscreeninfrontofyou,there’splentyoflifetoseehere…barsarestillgoingstrong–butforhowmuchlonger?

Gouzouisasmallcharacterwithnoeyesoramouthbutbrimmingwithpoetry,visibleonwallsallaroundRéunionIsland.Jacewasonly19whenhefirstenjoyedsuccesswithhisgraffitiartonthisFrenchisland,whereheisseenasarealpioneer.Heisstillbasedthere,intheIndianOcean,butcrossestheseas at every opportunity. He has also left his trace in Le Havre, his native city to whichhereturnsregularly,scatteringhisgouzousacrosstheurbanlandscape,delightinghismanyfanswhowilltrackdown,commentandcontributetothetreasurehuntrunonsocialmediaduring A Summer in Le Havre.

ThejourneywillbeginattheentrancetotheJapanesegarden,transformed into an Edo-era tsukubaï.Itsdestinationwillbeanisletinthemid-dleofthenearbypool,whereyoucanleaveawish.Awish,suspendedandadd-ingcolortotheprojectionsintoanuncertainfuture,andexpressingourfeelingsand desires.

PorteOcéaneislocatedatthewesternendofLeHavre’stramway,rightonthebeach.ThissymmetricalbuildingcomplexoneithersideofthemainaxisAvenueFochformsagatewaytothesea.ThesevenstorybuildingsdesignedbyAugustePerretwerecompletedin1956.
OnthelefthandsouthbuildingofPorteOcéane,onthecornerfac-ingthestreetandthecity,awhiterectangularconstructionemergesfromthear-chitecture:froma4th-floorwindowonthenorthernfrontofthebuildingacubicvolumethatmatchesthedimensionsofthewindowjutsintospacehorizontally,thenrisesverticallyand,levelwiththeedgeoftheroof,followsthecontoursofthebuildinguntilitdropsbackdownandfinallydisappearsintwoadjacentwin-dowsontheeasternfaçade.
Thesculpturalexpansionemergesfromthebuildinglikeaclampshapedrawnintothesky.Itconnectstwodifferentapartmentsondifferentfloors.Thereisnotellingwhethertheconstructionmightnotactuallybeafunctionalelementafterall:hidingasecrettunnelthatcanbetraversed.
Monumentalbutgraceful,gleamingwhite,model-likewithnodis-cerniblesurfacestructure,bowingtothedisciplineofthearchitecturalgridyetdefyingitwithinitsownseverity,thesculpturekeepsadelicatebalancebetweenfamiliar object and alien apparition, functional add-on and absurd construction.

Colors on the beachLe Havre beach
The beach cabins in Le Havre are determinative to the cityscape. Theyhistoricallyrepresentedtheultimateholidayexperiencefortheworkingclass.Muchlatertheyofferedtheaffluentcitizensummerentertainment.
Traditionallytheyhavealwaysbeenwhiteandremainedundec-orated. For the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the city, I proposed to givethemacolorfulexpression:stripesof10differentcolorsandof6differentwidthwillbepaintedonthevisiblefacesofthecabins.Iseeitasakindofcho-reography,acompositionofthewholepanorama,withallthecabins.Aunitythroughdiversity.
Suchaplancanonlyworkwiththecooperationoftheownersofthebeachcabins.Iamhappyandgratefulthatsuchalargegroupoftheownersarecontributingtothisplan.Buttheindividualswhopreferredtoleavetheircottagewhitearealsocontributingtothewhole.Thesewhitecabinsbehavelikethe necessary silence in music.
Todeterminethecoloursequenceinrelationtothebars’widths,Iwished a cooperationwithUniversity of LeHavre, a research team fromComputingLaboratoryofInformationProcessingandSystems(LITIS)andmem-bersofaFabLab("LaFaironnerie")whichworksonthelinkbetweenscienceandart.Theyhavecomeupwithafantasticidea:theteamusesKingFrancisI’sdecreethatdictatedthefoundationofLeHavreasastartingpointtogeneratecode;thiscodethendeterminesthecoloursandthewidthofthebarsforeverysinglebeachcabinsaccordingtoruleswehavedefinedtogether.
Students of technical painting schools in Le Havre (LycéeSchuman-Perret, CFA Baie de Seine), the integration workshop AHAPS(AssociationHavraiseActionPromotionSociale),thepaintersfromthetech-nicalservicesofthecitycouncil,andalocalpaintingcompanycalled“Franck”areinvolvedintheimplementationofthedesign.Inaddition,severalcitizensofLeHavre,contributeonewayoranother,andareshowingtheirsympathyfortheplan.Thisputthewholeasmuchaspossibleincooperationwiththelocalresi-dents.Allinall,astimulatingexperience.

nicationsdevicesfoundaroundtheheightsofLeHavre,onrooftops,façades,pylonsandhilltops.Amodernfeaturenecessarytolong-distancetelecommuni-cations,theparaboleisanchoredatCaucriauville,oneofthecity’ssummits,andparadoxically reinstates a direct, physical, local approach to communication.
Itisalow-tech,almostprimitivewoodenstructure,contrastingwiththehigh-techdesignoftheusualtechnologydevices.Itrevivestheearliestwaysofcommunicatingface-to-face,usingwordsandspeech.Itsconcentric,radiatingformisacatalystforhumancommunication,connectingvisitors,get-tingthemtosocialize,hereandnow,inthisgatheringplace.

KurtHentschläger isAustrianbut lives inChicagoandcreatesaudiovisualinstallationsandshows.Theimmersivenatureofhisproductionsstart out as reflections on the sublime and the human condition. His current solo workslookdeeperintothenatureofhumanperceptionandtheacceleratedim-pactofnewtechnologiesontheindividualandcollectiveconsciousness.

TheshipswillincludeclassAsquare-riggedvessels,thelargestsailingshipsontheseas,suchastheprestigiousMir,thetrainingvesselfromtheSaintPetersburgMaritimeEngineeringCollege,measuring108metersandabletosailwith200peopleon-board.Inadditiontosailinglessons,thecadetslearnaboutoceanographyandmarinescience.ItisthefastestofthefivesistershipslaunchedinGdanskinthe1980s,onthemodelofDarMlodziezy.
GuldenLeeuw,anelegantDutchschoonerwithalltheallureofaluxuryyacht,builtin1937,andAlexanderVonHumboldtII,aGermantrainingshipbuiltin2011,willbejoinedbyPortuguese,British,Russian,Canadian,SpanishandBrazilianvessels,measuringupto120meterslongandwithseveralthou-sand square meters of sails!

OntheinitiativeoftheSeineEstuaryChamberofCommerceandIndustry, companies from Le Havre and Normandy have joined up in a Club to sup-porttheevent.TheLHCLUB2017,chairedbyVianneydeChalus,nowhasaround40membersandisthelargestprivatefinancialbackerofASummerinLeHavre.TheClubisprovidingsymbolicsupportforthelastworkproducedbyStéphaneThidet,Impact, at Bassin du Commerce.
Thestronginvolvementoflocalbusinessesdemonstratestheircom-mitmenttogivingthecityanewimageasamodern,attractive,vibrantplace.Itispartoftheirefforttotackledevelopmentissuesintheregion.

Fabienne Delafosseexplainswhycompaniesdecidedtobackthisproject:“Colors on the beachisapopular,accessibleprojectthatwillbenefitfromhighvisibilityamonglocalpeopleandtourists.Thelocalpopulationwillalsobeinvolvedinmakingthecabins more colorful: the artist has called on students from Le Havre University tocreateanalgorithmwhilestudentsfromthevocationalcollegewillbedoingthepaintingwithhelpfrompeopleonaninclusionsocialstructure.Thisechoesthevaluesofoursmallandmedium-sizedbusinesses:creatingjobsandaddingvaluewithinputfromouruniversityandtechnicalinstitutions.
SupportfortheprojectisalsoanopportunityforSMEstohighlighttheirinvolvementinlocallife,throughtheirclients,staffandsuppliers,andtheirroleasadriverofthelocaleconomy.”
