The Basilica of St. Peter in Chains in Rome is a treasury of Christian art. On

May 8, Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington took possession of this titular

church, assigned to his care by Pope Benedict XVI. As a member of the Col-

lege of Cardinals, Cardinal Wuerl’s service to the pope unites the Archdiocese

of Washington in a unique way to the universal ministry of the successor of

St. Peter. Several masterpieces of Christian art in this ancient Roman church

express the miracle of the chains of St. Peter, that is its spiritual focus. A tour

The story behind the miracle of the chains

Chapter twelve of the Acts of the Apostles begins with the account of St. Peter’s miraculous escape from a prison in Jerusa-lem. At this time, King Herod had turned his wrath against the apostles, first killing Saint James and then imprisoning Saint Peter, whom he intended to bring to pub-lic trial. Luke tells us that during Peter’s imprisonment in Jerusa-lem, the Church earnestly prayed for him, a reminder of the impor-tance of prayers for the apostles and their successors, the pope and the bishops.

King Herod targeted Church leaders and ordered four squads of four soldiers to guard St. Peter in prison. But on the night before Herod was to bring Peter to trial, an angel of the Lord appeared to the apostle in his prison cell. A bright light shone in the cell as the angel commanded Peter to wake up. The chains on Peter’s wrists fell off, freeing him to move out of his cell past the sleeping guards. The iron gates of the city opened up miraculously as well. The angel of the Lord escorted Peter to freedom and then suddenly disap-peared from his sight. At first, Peter imagined this to be a vision and only when the angel left him standing as a free man outside the prison walls did he realize the hand of the Lord at work. He then hurried to the house of Mary, the mother of John. We are told that Peter then joined the Church in prayer.

St. Peter’s confession of faith in Jesus as the Son of God is the foundation of the Church’s faith. His faith rested on the power of God at work in his life. This miracle in the life of St. Peter was one of many moments of profound grace that transformed Peter, and prepared him for his unique ministry as the visible head of the Apostles and the universal Church.

Originally intended as part of a massive 47 statue funeral monument to Pope Julius II, the mausoleum is located in the church’s right transept. Visitors to Saint Peter in Chains are awe struck by the muscular marble figure of a seated Mo-ses, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. Moses is depicted with horns, conveying the biblical account of his face shining with light from “the radiance of the Lord” after his descent from Mount Sinai. Art historians note that Moses is depicted with horns due to the closeness of the Hebrew words for “beams of light” and “horns.” The niches on either side hold two female figures, Leah (right) and Rachel (left). The other sculptures in the ensemble are considered works of Michel-angelo’s followers: the Madonna and Child, the Prophet and Sybil, and the reclining figure of Pope Julius II.

Chains of St. PeterYear: ???Where: The confessioAccording to legend, the Empress Eudoxia (wife of Emperor Valentinian III) presented the chains to Pope Leo I. And while he compared them to the chains of Saint Peter’s final impris-onment in the Roman Mamertine prison, the two chains miraculously fused together. To see the chains, pilgrims step down into the confessio by way of two ramps of stairs paved in colored marble, designed by Vespignani in 1876.

In a season of gradu-ations, the June 2 com-mencement exercises for Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Concep-tion made history, as the 70 young women and men of the Class of 2011 became the first students to gradu-ate from their school.

Before Mass, as fam-ily members and friends gathered in the shrine, the joyful crowd included

Msgr. John Enzler, who has served on the Cristo Rey board and helped organize business and community support for the Catholic high school in Takoma Park, which offers a corporate work study program.

“It’s one of the most exciting things I’ve been involved with in the Arch-diocese of Washington, to see youngsters come to the school (when it opened in 2007), with little chance of going to college, then to have 100 percent accepted into college. It validates

the dream,” said Msgr. Enzler, who next month becomes president of Catholic Charities of the archdiocese, after serving in recent years as pastor of the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

60 percent of the gradu-ates will represent the first members of their families to attend college. Cristo Rey, which opened four years ago, is sponsored by the archdiocese and by the Salesians of Don Bosco. Designed to make a college

preparatory education affordable to families with limited financial resourc-es, Cristo Rey’s work study program enables students to gain professional ex-perience and earn money to pay for part of their education.

Salesian Father Steve Shafran, Cristo Rey’s founding president, greet-ed the graduating seniors and their families and the school’s supporters, noting that the vision of St. John Bosco, a patron saint for youth, is reflected every day in the school. “Your

dreams can become reality if you believe,” he said.

A banner on the altar displayed the school’s motto, “Be who you are, and be it well.”

Cristo Rey’s Class of 2011 salutatorian, Jenifer Moreno, spoke emotion-ally about the opportuni-ties she had gained at the school.

“I am the first person from both sides of my family to graduate from high school and go on to college,” she said. “Back home in El Salvador, edu-cation is a precious gift, because so few have the opportunity to achieve it.” Moreno said that she was afraid that cycle might re-peat itself in her case, but she graduated from Cristo Rey and plans to attend West Virginia University this fall. “I am proud to be the first graduate in my family, because I have made the path easier for my siblings.”

Cristo Rey’s pioneer class had “grown up as a family,” she said. “We’ve had our ups and downs, what family doesn’t?”

Moreno offered special thanks to her mom and dad. “They have sacrificed so much for me, I don’t know how to repay them, except to go on to college and pursue a career in medicine,” she said. “...Now my dream is to be-come a transplant surgeon. If I made it this far, why not go farther?”

The next Cristo Rey student speaker, valedic-torian Catherine Rubio, spoke of the journey that the members of her class had made. “We started as naive freshmen, and leave as mature seniors, heading to college.”

Rubio said through her years there, she learned, “Education is the key to everything. I am not alone in this transformation.”

The school’s Catholic identity “strengthened my relationship with God,” she said.

At her work study site, Impact Office Products in Beltsville, when word spread that she had been accepted into Georgetown University, the company’s president sent her flowers and balloons. At George-town, Rubio hopes to prepare for a career as a radiologist.

“I hope we will all be part of something bigger

than ourselves,” she said.The evening before,

THE GIFT OF FAITH“The very first gift, the

very first blessing that Don Bosco Cristo Rey made available to you was an experience of Jesus Christ, and an invitation to know him more closely,” the car-dinal said in his homily.

Their Catholic educa-tion, he said, taught them about their connection “to God and his love and care for you.” That gift of faith, that gift of love and hope, helps the students know “you’re capable of great things,” Cardinal Wuerl said, encouraging them to walk in Christ’s love and truth as they face deci-sions in life.

“You go forth well prepared, because of your education and because of your encounter with Christ, because of your sense of who you are, and because of what you learned these last four years,” the cardinal said. “God bless you, and con-gratulations!”

In closing remarks at the Baccalaureate Mass, Father Shafran thanked Cardinal Wuerl for supporting the school, through its opening, dedication and expansion. The priest spoke about the new school’s special mis-sion, combining academic excellence, professional work experience and faith. “We have been called to form a community that would bring Jesus Christ – Cristo Rey ( “Christ the King”) – alive,” the priest said, adding that all along, the goal was to not only prepare the students for college, but to prepare “young men and women of faith, poised to become saints.”

At the end of Mass, Dea-con Bert L’Homme, arch-diocesan superintendent of schools, presented the Cardinal Hickey Award, which included a check for $1,500 to Cristo Rey graduating senior Julio Cesar Hernandez Jr., who will attend the Catholic University of America and study engineering. At the commencement the next

day, he was also named as the school’s outstanding graduate.

Following the Mass, Hernandez said it was a special feeling to be a part of Cristo Rey’s pioneer class. “We were the first ones to come here and learn,” he said.

Hernandez, the student body president, was baptized and raised in neighboring Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, and then got to join Cristo Rey’s first class when the school opened in 2007. “This is home, man,” he said, smiling.

For his work study

experience, Hernandez worked for all four years at Fannie Mae, where he said he learned about respon-sibility. Four years earlier, he said he never thought about college. “Now it’s so close!” he said.

The student said his faith deepened at Cristo Rey. “God is the biggest part of my life. I try to keep that number one, stay positive. That helps me in school, to know God is there, and everything will be all right.”

That point was echoed by his classmate, Jus-tine Akinlami, who said, “Every day started with

De nuevo en este cuarto domingo escucha-mos una preciosa página del evangelio,aunque hoy en un mundo tan cosmopo-lita no se la entienda con la profundidad

que se podía en los tiempos de Cristo e incluso entiempos no muy lejanos al presente. El pastor es la per-sona que se dedica al cuidado del ganado, de unaforma particular lo asociamos con las ovejas.

Pastor y labrador son los oficios más nombrados enlos evangelios, los cuales eran muy comunes, pues gran

parte de la economía teníaque ver con ellos. Ya en el An-tiguo Testamento el califica-tivo de pastor no se dasolamente a los cuidadoresdel ganado, sino que tambiénse les aplica a profetas, líderese incluso al rey. El cuidado deotros es de suma importancia,y por eso Cristo mismo se de-

clara como Buen Pastor, cuyas cualidades son el conoci-miento de las ovejas, el reconocimiento de su voz porparte de ellas, el ir siempre delante para guiarlas, parareconocer el camino, para evitar el peligro.

Jesús instruye a los oyentes presentándose como lapuerta por la que se entra en el aprisco, y señala quequienes no lo hacen así son ladrones y salteadores. Sonesos que van para matar, destruir y penetran en el re-cinto por lugares insospechados para evitar que las ove-jas les descubran porlo que son. Ni siquieralas llaman, pues sóloreconocen la voz delpastor. Un poco másadelante en el evange-lio, Jesús se proclama“Buen Pastor”.

El arte y la litera-tura nos han dadoobras preciosas sobreeste motivo, entre las que me gusta destacar el “BuenPastor” de Murillo. Siempre me da un sentido de sereni-dad y de no estar solo.

En la iglesia primitiva al sacerdote se reconocíacomo pastor, en imitación a Cristo, por el cuidado de lafeligresía que ellos tenían. Los protestantes han sido másfieles a esa tradición que nosotros los católicos, aunqueno la hemos olvidado del todo.

Este evangelio es muy propio para la celebración anivel mundial que este cuarto Domingo de Pascua nosproporciona: la Jornada Mundial de las Vocaciones.

El Santo Padre Benedicto XVI nos ha mandado unmensaje muy especial para esta ocasión, cuyo título es

“Promover las vocaciones en la Iglesia local”.En esta iglesia local de Washington estamos bende-

cidos de varias formas en lo que se refiere a las vocacio-nes sacerdotales, tanto en lo que se refiere al número deseminaristas como a la calidad de los mismos, tanto enel aspecto académico, como humano y espiritual. Contodo y con eso necesitamos más sacerdotes, necesita-mos más jóvenes que respondan al llamado de Dios, yde una forma en particular para servir a la comunidadhispana/latina.

Hay comunidades que sienten la necesidad de esepastor. Pero cabe hacerse la pregunta: ¿habéis mandadoalgún joven al seminario? ¿qué hacemos para que nues-tras familias sean pe-queños seminarios/semilleros devocaciones? Jesús pi-de que oremos para que Diosmande operarios a la viña.

La misión del pastor, siguiendo el estilo de Cristo, espara gente dedicada a personas con nombre propio y enconcreto, con particular énfasis en los débiles, desprote-gidos, rechazados, perseguidos, inmigrantes, enfermos,sin olvidar todos los demás, que también son hijos/as de

Dios.Antes de elegir a sus

apóstoles, según los diferen-tes relatos evangélicos, Jesússiempre pasa largos ratos,incluso la noche entera enoración, en comunicación ycomunión con el Padre. Alhablar de vocaciones, tantoal sacerdocio como a la vidaconsagrada, debemos co-

menzar con la oración, porque el Jesús lo puede todo,como escuchábamos decir a Pedro en la primera lec-tura, que el Padre lo había constituido Señor y Mesías,no solamente continuará llamando, sino que tambiénpodrá tocar el corazón de esas mismas personas paraque respondan con generosidad, dispuestas a todo porel bien del rebaño, sin pensar en el propio beneficio, ca-rrera o poder, sino al servicio de los hermanos y herma-nas, como hizo el que se denominó a sí mismo BuenPastor, que no vino a ser servido, sino a servir.

Oremos para que la voz del Señor sea escuchada, ynos dejemos guiar por él, quien es el verdadero y únicopastor.

La aprobación del Dream Act, enMaryland implica que los estudiantesindocumentados que cumplan conciertas condiciones tendrán acceso alas instituciones de educación supe-rior con las mismas facilidadeseconómicas de las que gozan los estu-diantes ciudadanos o residentes.

“Esta ley nos va a permitir tener unafuerza de trabajo altamente educada en el es-tado”, dijo el gobernador antes de firmar lanorma que representa un éxito para los cen-tenares de activistas nacionales y locales queluchan por que los jóvenes, hijos de inmi-grantes indocumentados, que llegaron a estepaís siendo niños, tengan acceso al derechouniversal a educarse.

“Es una cuestión de justicia”, afirmó mon-señor Mark Brennan, párroco de la iglesiaSan Martin de Tours de Gaithersburg y uno

de los más activos defensores de los derechosde los estudiantes, recalcando que los jóvenesinmigrantes deben ir a la universidad bajo lasmismas prerrogativas y con los mismos dere-chos que sus pares nacidos en EstadosUnidos.

“En esta ley no hay favoritismo, sino justi-cia”, dijo agregando que “no podemos dejar alos jóvenes desprotegidos”.

Según monseñor Brennan los jóvenes quehoy levantan las banderas de la igualdadalgún día serán ciudadanos y su educaciónserá de mucho provecho para el estado y parala sociedad en general.

“Esto significa esperanza, la diferenciaentre la esperanza y la desesperanza”, dijopor su parte el legislador Víctor Ramírez cel-ebrando el hecho de que la consecución de lafirma y la aprobación de la ley en general, fueun logro de toda la comunidad, no solo de lacomunidad hispana, sino de todos los sec-tores incluyendo el anglo y el afroamericano.

Eso excluye, por supuesto, a quienes yaestán tratando de atacarla a través de un ref-erendo, pero Ramírez, un antiguo defensorde la ley y de sus implicaciones, está tran-quilo, afirma que esa posibilidad es real pero“vamos a hacer lo que sea necesario, en elmomento que sea necesario, ahora vamos acelebrar”.

Y eso es exactamente lo que hizo DilanGarcía, un joven guatemalteco que llegó a Es-tados Unidos con su madre siendo muy niñoacompañando sus sueños de alcanzar unmejor futuro. Hoy esos sueños están máscerca de convertirse en realidad. Hoy la posi-bilidad de convertirse en médico o ingenieroelectrónico -todavía tiene tiempo de decidir-es real.

Por eso, al grito de “Sí podemos” decenasde estudiantes y activistas celebraron eufóri-cos en Annapolis a pasos de la sede legislativaestatal donde se firmó la ley.

Entre quienes celebraban estaba, también,Iván Echeverry, un joven de origen colom-biano que llegó a Estados Unidos a través deuna adopción que no prosperó y que ha li-brado ya muchas batallas.

“Quiero estudiar para ser dibujante”, diceexplicando que le gusta dibujar a lápiz y queel arte es lo suyo.

La lucha por defender los derechos de losestudiantes ha sido una de las banderas de laiglesia católica que hoy reconoce laaprobación de la ley como un acto que debeser celebrado y reconocido como “justo ypráctico” y una forma humana de permitirque los jóvenes continúen su educación y demaximizar sus posibilidades y talentos.

Oficialmente, la Conferencia Católica deMaryland rechaza cualquier esfuerzo porcerrar las puertas de la oportunidad, que estaley representa, a través de un referendo.

“No aprobamos que se falte a la ley y re-conocemos plenamente las preocupacioneslegítimas de nuestro estado y de nuestro paísfrente a la inmigración ilegal; pero esos prob-lemas no pueden resolverse negándose a lasnecesidades de aquellos que viven y trabajanentre nosotros aquí y ahora, especialmentelos jóvenes”, dice la conferencia en un comu-nicado.
