FROM THE CIVIC PRESIDENTBy Mary Goddard

Wow! What a busy place Harbor Cove is this summer. Thanks to the Summer Activities committee: John and Pat Lane, Tina and Peter Olssen, Marge Palmatier, Dottie Aaft, Dottie Pinard, Norma Ramsdale, Bill Witham, and Colleen and Jon Cederholm.

Thanks again to Mary Gillespie and her crew for the great fourth of July Picnic, and the summer committee for the games and water volleyball afterward.

I am still looking for someone to take over the Community Channel. Please call me at 734-717-9852 if want to do this or if you know of someone that could takethis over. Mel will be back in September and will teach someone how to do it.In the meantime the committee is doing a good job of keeping us informed on the Civic bulletin board.

FROM THE ROC 1ST VICE PRESIDENTBy Marcia Currie

Summertime in Harbor Cove is usually very quiet. This year, thanks to the Summer Activities Committee, things have really picked up. Thank you.

The volume of summer rain surprises me every year. Debby dumped a lot of water here. Fortunately, we were spared major damage, but

all the docks were underwater and the clubhouse patio was flooded too. It slowed down everything

except the vegetation. I think it is probably greener than most of you have ever seen. Thankfully, we have had only normal temperatures and not the blistering heat up north.

The erosion project continues to progress. They are now pouring concrete on the clubhouse end of Blackburn. The vinyl wall is beginning to extend around the end of Blackburn toward Riverview. The pepper trees back there have been removed. Wow!! What an amazing view of the river.

Work has just begun on refurbishing the Rec Hall. Not much to report there.

One issue I want to bring up and that is about pets. An aspect of this concerns pets in the no-pet areas. We have recently enacted a new, comprehensive application for residents who need to have a service/therapy cat or dog. We are absolutely required to provide “reasonable accommodation”. Some of you may have purchased in the no-pet section because you never want to deal with animals. Unfortunately for you, that cannot happen.

FROM THE EDITORBy Sue Nanz

All of our northern friends always ask us how we can stand living in Florida in the summer. Well, now we are wondering how you up North can stand the temperatures there! We have had days in the 80’s with lots of rain in the afternoons to cool it off. I got a new clothesline and can’t use it because by the time I get the laundry up, it

is time for the afternoon showers. The weeds are growing like, well, weeds, and the mowers seem to be in Harbor Cove every day! Our street has been flooded at least once a week but we are glad to be here.

The Summer Activities Committee has worked so hard planning great activities and August has even more! I just talked with Tina Olsson who mentioned the highlights for the month. Water volleyball is coming to the pool with a splash! Starting on Wednesdays at 6:00pm and on Saturdays at 11:00am. On the 8th of August, we will be meet at 8:15am and carpool to the Mote Aquarium. A sign-up sheet will be on the bulletin board and ticket sales will be July 31st. On August 15th, we will have a BBQ at 4:00pm on the patio. There will be a sign up sheet for that as well

with more details. The 17th, we will be having our monthly bunko night at 6:30pm. If the new furniture isn’t here by then, we will have it in the HR. Last, but not least, is another trip to Immokalee. The sign-up sheet will be on the bulletin board and tickets will be sold August 14th. Cost will be $15. If we can get fifteen people to go, we will be able to get a bus. It is quite a deal…you get $30 free play as well as a $5 voucher for lunch. Another music event is being planned. This activity will be changed from the pool area to the patio. See the bulletin board for details as to date and time.

Thanks to the committee for their hard work. They will be planning more activities for September as well. We are all grateful for their wonderful plans.

I’ve included a few pictures from Bonnie Erfourth from the June “Music by the Pool” for you to see.

This brings me to another aspect. That is “animals misbehaving”. Is your neighbor’s dog barking incessantly or peeing on your yard? Is the cat chasing all the birds? This occurs in all parts of the community. This we can control. If there is an animal that is behaving badly, please call the office IMMEDIATELY to complain. You don’t have to confront your neighbor but it is helpful if you know where the offending animal lives.

We hope that you want to know more about how our community works. All meetings (ROC and committees) are posted in advance. ROC minutes are posted on the bulletin boards and copies available in the office.

Enjoy your summer and keep in touch.

NEIGHBOR HELPING NEIGHBORBy Betty Falch-Johnson 426-1191

There are many stumbling blocks in putting this program together here in Harbor Cove; liability and insurance coverage, things not thought about.

Phyliss Balliett and volunteer, John, presented a 45-minute over-view of a program offered by The Venice Senior Center that is given at the North Port Library. There are several programs for Support

Groups. The course that they presented was an over-view of "Powerful Tools for Caregivers." The course is six weeks in duration and takes a commitment of 1-1/2 hours per week. Phyliss selected one segment of this program: stress, how to recognize it in the Caregivers life and possible ways to deal with it. Only five Harbor Cove residents/caregivers were in attendance at the June 18th presentation. Three of the most faithful and interested had schedule conflicts on that day. But there is "light at the end of the tunnel!” We might be able to get this six-week program offered here in Harbor Cove---and it will be free! But there is a large commitment of time and we will have to have a minimum of 8 full-time, 24/7, caregivers. This will not be possible till fall when the snowbirds return. Look for more information in the September issues of the Harbor Cove bulletin.

HARBOR COVE CARESBy Betty Falch-Johnson 426-1191

AN UNEVENTFUL CHILDHOODBy Angie Torrisi for the Writers Group

I must have had an uneventful childhood. Only two things stand out.

The terror I felt when they took me away to have my tonsils out.

The second event I remember wasn’t so traumatic. It was when my folks gave me a beautiful royal blue two-wheel bike. I was thin and very shy and I think I only spoke Italian for the first few years of school. And my parents could not help. They were too busy teaching me respect, humility and decorum. I was a good student and won awards along the way. I think I made them proud. And they thought it more important that I was ready to face the world. I was never coddled and my parents were not cool, because you see what they really wanted for me was to love and live by the Golden Rule.

A TIME THAT I WAS MOST NERVOUSBy John Baldwin for the Writers Group

Trenton Arena, its 6:45 PM… nothing starts until 7:30. I wonder how this night is going to go down. I’ve been pretty good in the gym, but it's different in front of hundreds of people. Everybody I know will be here. I hope I don’t shame myself.

I hope my nose doesn’t bleed too much. Cripes, it always does bleed though, and I always snort the mess all over my chest and gut. Folks always think that blood means you're hurt, and that just ain’t so. I hope the judges know that.

I wonder if this guy from north Jersey is older than me… He can’t be younger than my sixteen, that’s the youngest they’ll let you fight. Some of these guys have been kicking around in the golden gloves for years though. But he’s in the novice class same as me so he can’t be too much more experienced no matter how old he is.

It’s cold down here, my fingers are freezing but my

palms are dripping wet. I’m too tense; if I don’t relax I’ll be out of gas in the first round. Relax, relax, it’s only five of seven…

Why did I get here so soon, why do I always show up early? That’s not true, you don’t always show up early, you’re late for school more often then not, Geeze I hate school. It's cold down here and my armpits are soaked, and that just makes me colder.

Relax, you’re too tense! Maybe if I laid down on the bench and cover up with a towel I could relax and be warmer.

Why did I change out of my street clothes so soon? It’s only seven o’clock; I could have waited till 7:15 and still had plenty of time. I’m an early bird, and that bird is a dodo. That’s a little better… relax.

I wonder if I’ll get hurt. Lousy time to think about that. You’ve sparred a million rounds it seems and never been really been hurt, why sweat that now.

Oh yeah! How about the time my dad told Bucky Leggit to hurt me to see if I had enough heart to be a fighter? Bucky hit me in the gut so hard I doubled over and I couldn’t breathe, it scared me to death.

I remember the panic of not being able to breathe and swinging back as hard as I could to keep him off me... Bucky grabbed and hugged me, laughing as he spun me around the ring and shouted to my dad, for him not to worry about heart, that I’d be fine.

7:05PM: others should be coming now, relax, close your eyes, and relax.

I think, for the hundredth time, Oh Lord, don’t let me embarrass myself tonight…

I hear my dad say, “I thought that he’d be up a wall by this time, and look, he’s asleep.”

An important life lesson: nerves don’t have to show. Act cool and they’ll think you are.

RECYCLINGBy Pat Woods 426-3246

The North Port Police Department (North Port City Hall) has a Take-Back Box for unused prescription and over the counter medicines. Do this instead of flushing them down the drain or putting in the garbage.

Waste Management has a box available to handle old household batters -- D, C, AA, AAA, etc. as well as those we use in our other electronic devices. There is a monthly charge for the box but they claim that the old batteries could explode and cause fires if improperly disposed of.

From Your SALES and MARKETING Team!

Here in Harbor Cove we have the great opportunity to make as many friends as we desire.

I am proud to say that I have gained a good bit of family and friends and I treasure the time that we all spend together.

As many of you may already know, our Marketing Chairman, George Kaiss, has been ill for the past 6 months and has left us to join his lovely wife, Margerey.

George and Marge moved from Cape May, NJ to Harbor Cove in 1989 and were involved with many of Harbor Cove’s activities, boards and committees. They loved boating and the water.

George will be missed immensely around the community, and we will celebrate all of his outstanding accomplishments along with his ability to make friends wherever he traveled.

I hate to see my friends go, but I know they are not very far away.

How to keep your eyes healthy August is Eye Exam Month. Here are some tips to help with eye health:• Eat well. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is important for your eyes. Eating plenty of vegetables and

fruit will benefit your overall health and may help protect against some conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD, see below). Read tips on how to have a healthy, balanced diet.

• Wear sunglasses. Strong sunlight can damage your eyes and may increase your risk of cataracts. Wear sunglasses or contact lenses with a built-in UV filter to protect your eyes from harmful rays. Read more about protecting your eyes from the sun.

• Quit smoking. Smoking can increase your chances of developing conditions such as cataracts and AMD. • Stay a healthy weight. Being overweight increases your risk of diabetes, which can lead to sight loss. • Use good lighting. To see well, your eyes need three times as much light when you’re 60 as they did

when you were 20. Increase the daylight in your home by keeping windows clean and curtains pulled back. Make sure you have good electric lighting too, especially at the top and bottom of stairs so you can see the steps clearly. For reading or close work, use a direct light from a flexible table lamp, positioned so the light is not reflected by the page and causing glare.

• Exercise. Good circulation and oxygen intake are important for our eye health. Both of these are stimulated by regular exercise. Read more about how much exercise you should do.

• Sleep well. As you sleep, your eyes are continuously lubricated and irritants, such as dust or smoke, that may have accumulated during the day are cleared out. Here are 10 tips to beat insomnia.

Take this Eye-Q test —See how much you knowabout glaucoma Millions of Americans are at risk for vision loss from glaucoma, a leadingcause of blindness in the United States. Are you one of them? If you are, do you know how to reduce your risk of blindness? To determine how high your Eye-Q is, answer the following questions about glaucoma.

1 Glaucoma is more common in African

Americans than in Whites.

2 Glaucoma tends to run in families.

3 A person can have glaucoma and not know it.

4 People over age 60 are more likely to get glaucoma.

5 Eye pain is often a symptom of glaucoma.

6 Glaucoma can be controlled.

7 Glaucoma is caused by increased eye pressure.

8 Vision lost from glaucoma can be restored.

9 A complete glaucoma exam consists only of measuring eye pressure.

People at risk for glaucoma should have an eye examination through dilated pupils.

To see if you have a perfect Eye-Q score, read all the answers on the back. If you got 9 or 10 right, congratulations. You know a lot about glaucoma. If you missed some, review the answers so you can share your knowledge with your family and friends.

Answers1 True. In a study funded by the National Eye Institute, researchers at The Johns Hopkins University reported that glaucoma is three to four times more likely to occur in African Americans than in Whites. In addition, glaucoma is six times more likely to cause blindness in African Americans than in Whites.

2 True. Although glaucoma tends to run in families, a hereditary basis has not been established. If someone in your immediate family has glaucoma, you should have a comprehensive dilated eye examination every one to two years.

3 True. The early stages of open-angle glaucoma, the most common form, usually have no warning signs. However, as the disease progresses, a person with glaucoma may notice his or her side vision gradually failing.

4 True. Everyone over age 60 is at an increased risk for glaucoma, especially Mexican Americans. Other groups at increased risk are African Americans over age 40 and people with a family history of glaucoma. Children and babies can also develop glaucoma.

5 False. People with glaucoma usually do not experience pain from the disease.

6 True. Although glaucoma cannot be cured, it can usually be controlled by eyedrops or pills, conventional surgery, or laser surgery. Sometimes eye care professionals will recommend a combination of surgery and medication.

7 False. Increased eye pressure means you are at increased risk for glaucoma, but does not mean you have the disease. A person has glaucoma only if the optic nerve is damaged. If you have increased eye pressure but no damage to the optic nerve, you do not have glaucoma. Follow the advice of your doctor.

8 False. Vision loss from glaucoma is permanent. However, with early detection and treatment, the progression of vision loss can be slowed or halted, and the risk of blindness reduced.

9 False. A measurement of eye pressure by tonometry, though an important part of a comprehensive eye exam, is, by itself, not sufficient for the detection of glaucoma. Glaucoma is detected most often during an eye examination through dilated pupils. Drops are put into the eyes during the exam to enlarge the pupils, which allows the eye care professional to see more of the inside of the eye to check for signs of glaucoma. When indicated, a visual field test should also be performed.

True. An eye examination through dilated pupils is the best way to diagnose glaucoma. Individuals at increased risk for the disease should have their eyes examined through dilated pupils every one to two years by an eye care professional.

Get your eyes examined. Don’t lose sight of glaucoma.

NEWS FROM HARBOR COVE “SAFETY SCOUTS”

Did you know that the Sheriff office stands ready to help you protect your valuables. They will loan you an electric engraving tool to mark your electronics, TV, stereo, etc and a warning sticker “valuables are identified” for your door window.

You know those gift cards displayed on racks in grocery and department stores? Thieves use handheld scanners to read the code behind the magnetic strip. That, along wit a number on the card's front, gives them what they need to go online and buy stuff. When you buy the card, it has been drained of its value. And the person you give the card to will find it has nothing on it.

Ignore the text message on your cell phone that “you have won money from Wal-Mart or any other business”.

FPL customers are receiving letters saying their payments are invalid, then given false bank informaton in order to gain personal data. A company spokeswoman says customers should ignore suspicious claims to provide personal information including bank account numbers, credit card numbers or Social Security numbers. FPL says the scheme is similar to others nationwide. It hasn't said how many Florida customers have been affected.

Summer Road Trip: South Florida By: Elissa Rodrigues, Community Media Staff Writer

This month we’re ending the Summer Road Trip series with a look at eclectic South Florida. With the possible exception of California, Florida is one of the few states that is overflowing with a variety of state personas. Florida is renowned for its white sandy beaches, but you’d be remiss if you believed that’s all our state had to offer. Central Florida entertains with its numerous theme parks and the Space Coast, North Florida with its “natural Florida” and historic appeal, and then you have South Florida with yet again very different personas: the posh Naples and Boca Raton contrasted with the thumping latin beat and culture-rich Miami, with the laid-back perma-vacation feel of our Florida Keys. Let’s start with Southwest Florida and explore the Fort Meyers / Naples area. No trip to this area would be complete without walking on the white sand beaches of Captiva Island and Sanibel - they’re world famous for fishing, shelling and the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve. Fort Myers has historically attracted famous residents Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, whose winter houses are now primary tourist attractions. Just to the south is Naples, which first settlers compared to its Italian paradise counterpart. Today it boasts a stylish, upscale downtown area with restaurants and chic bars. While visiting, don’t miss the Naples Botanical Gardens, which includes six cultivated gardens, 90 acres of restored native preserve and 2.5 miles of walking trails. Moving farther south and over to the east coast, we come to Fort Lauderdale. Known as the “Venice of America” for its intricate canal system, Fort Lauderdale has more than 300 miles of inland waterways including the historic New River. Visit Las Olas Boulevard for some shopping, then hop onboard one of the many water taxis as it takes you to dinner. Disembark and reboard whenever you’d like as you explore all Fort Lauderdale has to offer. Visit www.sunny.org to plan your trip now through September 30, 2012, and get a $25 gift card when you book a two-night hotel stay for the limited time promotion. It’s a win-win! Go a little further south, and enter a place like no other: Miami. It feels like you’ve truly escaped into another world. Soak up the culture-rich surroundings,

whether you’re in the mood for some excellent Cuban cuisine in Little Havana or looking to rub elbows with a celebrity on South Beach. Check out a Miami Heat game, or maybe you’re a Dolphin’s fan. Interested in history? Visit the beautiful Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, or head over to Coconut Grove, known as “The Grove” if you’re a local, and catch a movie at CocoWalk. This city has it all. Head about 15 miles south and you’re at the beginning of our Florida Keys, where you can escape to the Conch Republic attitude, far away from stress and worries. The Keys have a Caribbean climate with coconut trees swaying in the breeze and blue water. It’s also the only frost-free place in the state with world-class fishing, diving welcomes everyone with its laid back attitude. This chain of islands consist of Key Largo, which boasts it is the “dive capital of the world,” Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West. Once in Marathon, cross the famous Seven Mile Bridge which connects Knights’s Key in Marathon to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Key West is the southernmost point of the continental U.S., and it’s actually closer to Havana (106 miles) than it is to Miami (127 miles). Residents of Key West make up 32% of the entire Keys population, and they always seem to be celebrating something with a nightly sunset party at Mallory Square on the pier. Immerse yourself into the Keys culture and visit Ernest Hemingway or Tennessee William’s house, take a trolley - or jet ski - tour of the island, grab a slice of key lime pie and enjoy!
