It has been a hot summer on the coast of North Carolina. Many of our members have taken to the beautiful beaches here on the crystal coast to cool off. Others have packed their campers and headed to the mountains. We have had members travel to all parts of the country to visit relatives and attend class reunions. Summer has been a time of rest and relaxation before we start a very busy fall quarter. On October 22, we will be holding our annual Fall Pancake Breakfast which always has a great turn out. We will participate in the Belk Charity Day Sale in Morehead City, NC. On September 24th, we will have members participating in events on both sides of the state. Some members will attend the Department of North Carolina Marine Corps League Fall Quarterly Meeting, hosted by the Table Rock Detachment #1197, in Boone, NC. Other members will work the display table at the Annual Retiree Appreciation Day, Marston Pavilion, Camp Lejeune, NC. On September 11th, we will pay our respects to those who lost their lives at the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and the United Airlines Flight 93, that crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Each year, the Patriot Day Observance takes place at the 9/11 Memorial Beam at Lejeune Memorial Gardens at 8:15 a.m. to mark the time the Twin Towers were hit. On October 23rd, we pay a solemn tribute to 273 Marines who gave their lives in Lebanon and Grenada on October 23, 1983. The ceremony will take place at the Beirut Wall located in the Lejeune Memorial Gardens, Jacksonville, NC. The names of each man are engraved in granite along with the words “They Came In Peace.” On November 5th, we will participate in the annual Jacksonville Veterans Day Parade, and on November 10th we will celebrate our 241st Birthday of the Corps.

Medicare and TRICARE: How to Keep Your TRICARE Coverage
By taking a few simple steps, retirees can make sure they have their TRICARE benefits after they
turn 65. Four months before your 65th birthday, you will receive a postcard from the Defense Man-
power Data Center (DMDC), the office that supports the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting
System (DEERS) A database of information on uniformed services members (sponsors), U.S.-
sponsored foreign military, DoD and uniformed services civilians, other personnel as directed by the
DoD, and their family members. You need to register in DEERS to get TRICARE., with information
about keeping TRICARE coverage after age 65.
You must have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B to be eligible for TRICARE For Life. TRI-
CARE For Life is Medicare wrap-around coverage for TRICARE beneficiaries who are entitled to
Medicare Part A and have Medicare Part B regardless of where you live or your age.
The Medicare initial enrollment period is seven months. If you miss your initial enrollment period,
your next chance to sign up for Medicare Part B is during the general enrollment period, Jan. 1 -
March 31. Your coverage will begin July 1st , and your monthly premium for Part B may go up 10
percent for each 12-month period that you could have had Part B, but didn't sign up for it. Also, there
will be a lapse in your TRICARE coverage until Part B is effective.
Be sure to sign up for Part B no later than two months before your 65th birthday. If you do not re-
ceive a postcard from DMDC, call them at 1- 800-538-9552.
For more information about TRICARE For Life, visit www.tricare.mil/tfl, http://www.tricare.mil/

You can get information about Medicare Parts A and B on www.medicare.gov, http://

HISTORY & TRADITIONS
The Guidon A publication of the Swansboro Marine Corps League Detachment #1407
11 September 2001: At 9:38a.m. a commercial airliner, piloted by terrorists, slammed into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Department of Defense, located across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The Marines Corps was fortunate in that no Marines were killed or seriously injured in this attack. The weekend before, most of the Department of Marine Aviation, located directly above the site of impact, had been relocated to another area of the Pentagon, during building renovation. Immediately following the attack, Marines set up a “command center” under an overpass of Interstate 395, which runs beside the Pentagon. Working alongside fellow servicemen and civilians for hours, days, and weeks after the tragedy, Marines played a large role in the rescue and recovery effort. Including those aboard the hijacked Boeing 757, 189 men, women, and children were killed in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
23 October 1983: At 0622 an explosive-laden truck slammed into the BLT headquarters building in Beirut, Lebanon, where more than 300 men were billeted. The massive explosion collapsed the building in seconds, and took the lives of 241 Americans--including 220 Marines. This was the highest loss of life in a single day for Marines since D-Day on Iwo Jima in 1945.

8 November 1990: President Bush announced that he planned to add more than 200,000 U.S. troops to those already deployed in Operation Desert Shield in the Persian Gulf area. The number of Marines in the area would be doubled by the addition of II MEF units from the Corps' east coast bases, and the 5th MEB from California. Within the next two months, Marine strength in the objective area would increase to nearly 90,000 Marines.
20 November 1943: The 2d Marine Division, commanded by Major General Julian C. Smith,
landed on Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands. After seventy-six hours of bitter fighting
during which almost 1,000 Marines died, and more than 2,000 were wounded, MajGen Smith
declared the island secure.

On November 10th, 1921 John A. Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, directed that a reminder of
the honorable service of the corps be published by every command, to all marines throughout the globe, on the Birthday
of our Corps. Since that day Marines have continued to distinguish themselves on many battlefields and foreign shores,
in war and peace. On this Birthday of the Corps, therefore, in compliance with the will of the 13th Commandant, article
38, United States Marine Corps Manual, edition of 1921, is republished as follows:
On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name “Marine”. In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history. The record of our corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world’s history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation’s foes. From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and in the long eras of tranquility at home, generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas, that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security. In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term “Marine” has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue. This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who pre-ceded us in the corps. With it we have also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our corps from gen-eration to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as “Soldiers of the Sea” since the founding of the Corps. JOHN A. LEJEUNE, Major General Commandant
