Mount Airy High School graduates of 1948gathered recently for a mini-reunion

luncheon and one of the favorite classmates, JimFrye, who now lives in Richmond, Va., wasunable to attend. Since Jim Frye was out of thecountry at that time, he decided to invite thatgroup to a dinner party at Cross Creek CountryClub last Friday evening.

Jim and Jackie Westfall, also of Richmond, greet-ed the guests for a delightful four-course dinner.

During the evening we heard all kinds of sto-ries — some true and some that stretched theimagination. Some in the group remembered Dr.Paul Webster and his twin brother, Dr. PhilWebster, and their days on the motorcycle. Thestory goes that Paul had a wreck on the motorcy-cle and was carried to the hospital. Phil went tothe hospital and was unhappy, not to see hisinjured brother, but to let him know that themotorcycle was torn all to pieces.

Juanita McGee Daber recalled that Jim Kemp,known far and near for welcoming everybody toMount Airy, greeted a couple one day at Barney’sas they came into eat. “Welcome to Mount Airy,”said Jim. “And where are you folks from?” Theyanswered, “We’re from Georgia.” Jim then joineda group of friends at a front table and proceeded to

enjoy lunch. After a while Jim spots a couplecoming up front to pay at the cash register. Hehops up and tells the couple. “So you’re visiting inMount Airy. Where are you folks from?” Theyanswer, “We’re still from Georgia.”

Jim Frye presented Jim Kemp with a framedproclamation naming him Ambassador of the Yearfor the class of 1948.

Tales also were repeated about the school prin-cipal H.M. Finch, how many of the guys signedup for Mr. Williams’ shop classes, math classeswith Skip Sims, Miss Holder’s English class,Latin with Miss Ada Haymore and favorite storiesabout Coach Wallace Shelton and his football andbasketball teams.

While observing the group, I found it unbeliev-able that Jim Frye became a top executive withPhillip Morris, Paul Webster is a retired gastroen-terologist, Hugh Sutphin retired as a dentist, JackLoftis is the city’s former mayor, Bill Hawksheaded a textile business, Jim Kemp taughtschool, Clarence Hines retired from the financialworld, Randall Sparger followed in the footstepsof his father in the furniture business and JackOverby retired from a career in the service.

The “girls” became nurses, teachers, a researchanalyst, secretaries, bookkeepers, bankers, home-makers, moms and great-grandmothers.

And here I am still working at The Mount AiryNews and probably the only one that gets out ofbed each morning and heads to work!

It was a memorable evening with the host pre-senting each of the ladies with long-stem red rosesas they bid goodnight.

Armstrong, who will celebrate her birthday onFeb. 28.

Valentine’s Day was filled with love songs, roses andchocolate at RidgeCrest Retirement as residents and invitedguests celebrated the spirit of the day with fellowship andmusic.

Monday afternoon entertainment included LarryKeesler, pianist, who performed Valentine favorites as resi-dents sang along and danced and others enjoyed refresh-ments of miniature Valentine cupcakes, chocolate Valentinecookies and pink lemonade.

That evening, The Debonaires serenaded the independ-ent living residents with their ’50s and ’60s Valentine’ssongs. Group members are Tom Beckom, Elizabeth Folger,Angela Llewellyn, Peyton Marion, Shana Marion and WillBryant. Larry Keesler plays love songs as Jane Edwards and Prather Albritton listen.
