With Liberty and Justice for All

As we approach the celebration of the founding of this country on

Independence Day, I wondered how little we know about the icons

of our heritage as citizens of the USA.

Did you know that the current form of our national flag, the star

spangled banner, was laid out by a 17 year old high school student

in Ohio for a school project? The student received a grade of B

minus from the teacher, with a promise that the grade would be re-

vised if the U.S. Congress were to adopt the design. Congress

acted, and the teacher kept his word.

Sometimes the symbols contain more life and meaning than is

generally acknowledged.

How prescient that the authors of the Declaration of Independ-

ence would assert that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that

all men are created equal…” at a time when neither women nor cer-

tain people of color were considered to be people. Yet the truth

conveyed in these words has helped to reshape the fabric of our so-

ciety on more than one occasion.

“Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.”

These words are cast into the Liberty Bell and come from a portion

of the description of instructions on keeping a holy jubilee year, the

first year after seven sets of seven years. (Leviticus 25:10)

Sometimes, in our practice, we measure up to B- when our values

and beliefs may actually exceed our imagination.

So I am left wondering this Independence Day for whom does

freedom not ring in our land today? Have we really achieved the

lofty ideals we espouse so easily and without reflection on national

days? What do you think?

With deep gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy, I give thanks to

God for the ability to ask those questions.

See you in worship!

Summer Book Club Have the words “Mom and Dad love you more!!” ever shot out of your mouth?

Turns out, the need to be loved and the fear you are not goes all the way back to the

beginning of time. Spend this summer in sunny Salinas Valley, California, with John

Steinbeck’s East of Eden – a not-so-sunny novel of love, depravity, guilt and freedom

inspired by the first siblings of Genesis, Cain and Abel. Warning: If a family reunion

is on your calendar for this season, you might want to wait until Summer Book Club

2015 to join us . . .. We will meet in the Church Parlor at 7:00 p.m., for discussion,

refreshments and more on four Tuesday evenings -July 1, 15, 29, and August 12.

Please contact Jen Rowe ([email protected]) to sign-up or for more information.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game! 6th Annual Washington Nationals Trip Come join us for another trip to Nationals Park to see the Nats play the San Fran-

cisco Giants on Sunday, August 24, at 1:30 p.m. We have reserved 40 tickets, and

SOKS Camp ~ July 14-17 at Heritage Park SOKS Camp returns July 14-17 at Heritage Park. Different churches and organi-

zations provide a summer camp experience for the children living in Heritage Park

by taking responsibility to plan activities during several weeks of the summer. We

need volunteers to help Monday through Thursday from 12:45 to 3:30 p.m. You

may come all four days or just one or two days. We will transport the children from

Heritage Park to Sunshine Park three days and have water day in the courtyard at

Heritage Park one day. If you are able to help or have questions, please contact Jim

Toler, 207-1202, ([email protected]) or Bruce Harvey, 373-7057,

([email protected]). We are also asking for volunteers to make sand-

wiches Monday through Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m., in the Church House

dining room. The rest of the lunch will be provided by another organization.

Service Opportunities in the Food Pantry Our Food Pantry, which is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 a.m.

to 1:00 p.m. in the basement of the Church House, needs more volunteers, both long

term and short term. The work includes bagging food for distribution (there are di-

rections on what goes in the bags), greeting guests and checking to see if they are

returning or having them fill out a form, if it is their first visit.

Our Senior Highs are encouraged to sign up to help this summer. Adult volun-

teers who can serve this summer and beyond are wanted to add to the volunteers we

already have. Please contact Wayne Hibbeler ([email protected]) or the

church office (373-7057 or [email protected]) to sign up or to get your

questions answered. The Food Pantry is low on

brown paper grocery bags.

You may bring your bags on

Sundays and place them in the

bins outside the sanctuary or

during the week to Bruce's of-

fice on the top floor of the

Education building.

New to the Library A Pocket Full of Seeds: The Forrest Peterson Story by Colonel Jeffery M. Peter-

son. Jeff Peterson, a member of The Presbyterian Church, Fredericksburg, Virginia,

presents the moving story of Forrest, his son’s “complete life” and the impact of

Forrest’s death. He has captured moments in his son’s life through topics, such as

Respect, Love, Kindness, and Gratitude. The book provides a window on how

Forrest’s Christian witness infused his family life, his student life, and his athletic

life with love and hope. The book includes the poem “Bearing the Loss of Forrest,”

which ends with

“Even as the glacier and sea interminably haunt the bystander souls they failed to claim

The sun emerges, piercing the gloom and breaking the chains of the darkest clouds

Warm rains, gentle breezes, and the fond memories of a precious life now past

Beckon the scarred meadow to once again flourish with the gift of life’s greatest joys.”

The Promise by Robert J. Morgan, is based on the text from Romans 8:28 – “We

know that all things work together for the good of those who love God; those who

are called according to his purpose.” In this book, Morgan illuminates the remark-

able power of a single Bible verse to give us an infinite, unshakable reason to live

with confidence and joy. Filled with real world illustrations of triumph over trag-

edy, The Promise not only equips us to deal more effectively with everyday stress

and strain but also gives true hope to anyone facing serious trouble.

School Dressing Days ~ August 8 & 9 The annual School Dressing Days will be held August 8 and 9 at the LDS church on

Bragg Road. New clothing, school supplies, backpacks and toiletries are provided to chil-

dren grades K-12 to get ready for back to school. As a member of the Interfaith Commu-

nity Council, our church plays an integral role in this event, now into its fourth decade.

Volunteers are needed to help families “shop,” keep items replenished, clean up, etc., on

those two days and are also needed for set up on August 6 and 7.

Other ways to help include: monetary donations (make check to Interfaith Community

Council with “School Dressing Days” on the memo line); donations of boys’ or men’s

boxers or boxer briefs –new (colored briefs accepted for small sizes- 4 & 6 only); new

junior sized teen girls’ jeans size 11, 13, 15; new or gently used backpacks; toiletries

(deodorant, bar soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste); socks for boys (black or white, crew and

“no show”) or girls (colorful “no show” socks popular).

We are also collecting gently used outerwear (coats, jackets, hoodies, sweatshirts) and

shoes. The families are very appreciative of these items, so please consider donating

things your children have outgrown.

There will be a receptacle outside the sanctuary on Sundays, or at the Princess Anne

Street entrance to the Education Building.

To volunteer for the event, you can choose your time slot and sign up with the Sign Up

Genius link - www.SignUpGenius.com/go/9040C45AFA922A31-volunteer/16599531 or

sign up at church.
