SCHOOL OF SPORT
Welcome to summer at Wichita Country Club! Whether you are new
to the Club or have spent your whole life here, you know summer is
the time to spend your days (and nights) enjoying all we have to offer!
From dining to fitness to entertainment options, we want to be your
home away from home.
As I settle into my new role, I’m struck by the amount of activity that
takes place on a daily basis at the Club. From the time the gate opens in
the morning at 5:00 am until it closes at night, Wichita Country Club
is constantly full of excitement and activity.
This year has been no different. Throughout the Club we are
seeing increased visits in all departments. One of our key indicators
continues to be membership growth. Once again we are on record
pace for new members in a single year. Special thanks to Tamara, but
more importantly, special thanks to you who make Wichita Country
Club the place to be.
The highlights of the summer so far have been Memorial Day
Weekend at the pool. With three perfect days of weather, our new
pool facility was able to showcase itself for the busy holiday weekend.
Not only has the pool been popular with our current members, new
members continually reference this facility as a key draw to the Club.
With our athletics programs, the talk this year has been the growth
in our Junior Programs. All three of our primary areas—golf, tennis
and swimming—are seeing record numbers. Although not one of the
traditional big three activities at the club, pickleball is quickly gaining
popularity. On top of that, I’m not sure you will find a better pickleball
facility compared to WCC.
If you can’t tell, I’m pretty excited about what’s going on around the
Club! Our 117-year history is like no other Club around. We are proud
of our past but we are most inspired by what the future holds for this
Club. Thank you for helping us make it great every day!
Sincerely,
Never a dull moment.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
3
Have you noticed the latest addition to the front of the Club? Waving
proudly every time I approach these doors, the Wichita flag puts a
little extra pep in my step and reminds me I work somewhere pretty
amazing. If you haven’t noticed the fever that is the Wichita flag about
town, I’d recommend you take a tour down Douglas Street and circle
through Old Town. Truth be told, I’m not from Wichita but I can’t help
but want to paint an old wood pallet with those bright, primary colors
and pop it out in my garden. I’ll update you all when that happens.
Anyway, the entire point here is that we are the only club in town
named Wichita Country Club. We are the elite club in the area and
our unique membership represents all aspects of this great city. Every
single member here brings a new conversation to our hallways. It’s
pretty humbling to be surrounded by so many wonderful individuals.
As much as the flag represents our city, it’s pretty special to know the
people who move Wichita forward are right here under one roof. In this
issue you will meet my awesome new membership half, Kelly Flynn, be
introduced to three of seven legacies to recently join the Club, get the
inside scoop on School of Sport and much more. Stay Wichitawesome!
Flying proud.

In the short few months I’ve been at WCC, I’ve received a warm
welcome and I’m so grateful. I may be a familiar face to some of you
from my time with the Club’s neighbor, Whole Foods Market. I bring
my passion for meeting and helping people to WCC and I’m honored
to join the Club’s elite staff. As your member relations coordinator, I’ll
use the many skills I have to serve you and I’m beaming with excitement
to be on this journey with each and every one of you.
From updating mailing addresses to connecting you for special
occasions to Darian Tjaden, WCC event coordinator, I am a pillar to
lean on for any membership needs you and your family may have. I’m
pleased to expand here on what else WCC and I can offer you, your
family or your business.
Though you may be a second- or third-generation WCC family,
there are wonderful things at the Club we now offer you may not have
even heard about. There are also experiences we may not even know
we offer but I can tell you there is no event too small, no room not
available, no food too fancy or no task too daunting. WCC is ready to
accommodate you for anything and I am your liaison.
Summer winds often bring family reunions and pool parties; let me
be your guide to connecting the dots on hosting events like these at the
Club. We also have so many great avenues for your children and juniors
to get involved. Club4Kids is brimming with new things around every
corner, such as building and growing its first-ever garden and increasing
your kiddos’ hands-on crafting activities. Our junior board is a fantastic
opportunity for teens to improve decision-making and learn the behind-
the-scenes fine points of hosting a party. Family is the foundation of
WCC and I am here to help you utilize everything this great Club offers
and the exciting programs it has in place.
If you have extra personal time this summer, let’s get you out to try
tennis for the first time or grow your golf game. The golf pros and their
staff are world-class and they thrive on coaching and educating in any
way they can. Want to host a handful of friends for a day of golf, a patio
lunch and a dip in the pool? I would love to assist in making that day
enjoyable and carefree.
Our bountiful amenities are just as valuable for your business as
they are for you and your family needs. Think of WCC as a blank slate
for the many facets of your business. Imagine a corporate retreat set
against our groomed golf course, engaging in a team-building exercise
on the lawn or breaking bread over a business luncheon in the east
room. I am here to help you think outside the box and use the Club
to its full potential.
Every inch of WCC tells a special story. Contact me and through
Darian Tjaden and our excellent event staff we will make sure your
next event, meeting or celebration is executed with ease by the Club’s
amazing staff. I look forward to meeting you around the Club and
getting you out here to write a few WCC chapters of your own!
You won’t hearfrom me.

There’s something special about being a member of this Club. Our
membership director hears about it regularly. “We experience an
indescribable sense of belonging when we walk through the front
door…a comfort, closeness and familiar warmth.” This is your Club.
You grew up here and built lifelong friendships. Your parents taught you
yes sir and thank you ma’am while dining at the Club. It never occurred
to you that learning to play golf at 7 would be such a handy hat trick
in your future career. You have the Club to thank for so many things.
Now something even more wonderful is happening at the Club. The
children you raised the way your parents raised you are calling Wichita
Country Club their own new home away from home. Some of you are
proudly watching your sons or daughters follow your footsteps and
become new members at WCC.
The Club has welcomed seven new legacies over the past two months
(see page 3). Meet three of our newest legacy families here.

CornejoClint Danielle
One might say 2017 has been a record year for Clint and Danielle.
Spending the winter months remodeling and making their new
house a home and then moving into it this past April was almost as
exciting as getting married in May. The tennis courts here at WCC
were transformed to set the stage for a wedding straight out of a
dream and the couple was simply stunning. When they returned from
honeymooning in Puerto Vallarta the next step was to join life at the
Club.
There are certainly many members excited to have Clint and Danielle
join the Club. You may recognize the Cornejo name considering Clint
and Danielle are the fourth Cornejo family here at WCC. And of course
Clint’s parents, Marty and Jenae, are thrilled to have one of their three
sons around to connect with on the range on weekends!
Besides the incentive of family, Clint and Danielle share a touching
story about why they chose their Club sponsors. Mike Maloney and Joe
Rothwell are close family friends and have known Clint most of his life,
but what really tugs on the heartstrings is when they talk about their
third, honorary sponsor, the late Phil Griffith. From the time he joined
the Club back in 1946, Mr. Griffith was a huge advocate of WCC.
Clint explains Mr. Griffith was their neighbor for two years before
they purchased and moved to their new home. Over those two years,
Mr. Griffith was a true friend to the Cornejo couple and always told
Clint and Danielle the Club would be lucky to have them as members.
Now at a point in their lives when membership in WCC makes sense,
it was extremely important to the two that Mr. Griffith be recognized
as a compelling reason for them deciding to join WCC.
Looking forward to their exciting future at WCC, Clint and Danielle
are thrilled to dive into all the Club offers. Clint, partner and general
manager at Allmetal Recycling, can’t wait to meet a few more fellow
KU fans, while Danielle, attorney at Martin Pringle, stays true to her
alma mater, OSU. This couple knows how to keep a busy schedule
and chase adventure so be sure to ask about their many hobbies if you
see them around the Club. Kind, warmhearted and with a great sense
of humor and shared love for really delicious food, Clint and Danielle
are the type of couple you want to get to know. Welcome to the Club,
Clint and Danielle! 9
Both Wichita natives, Joseph and Alexa started their story in 2004.
On the latest leg of their journey, the couple came to the Club with
great excitement and handed over their application for membership.
A rare and continuing love story only most couples imagine possible,
these two high-school sweethearts have shared 13 years together and
lived life to the fullest.
Family and friends are a high priority for Joseph and Alexa and the
Club has been the perfect place for them to reconnect after moving back
to Wichita from Kansas City. Joseph went to school at UMKC and
completed his doctorate in dentistry with Alexa by his side. As soon as
they returned to their hometown, Alexa’s parents, Grant and Michelle
Phipps, encouraged the young couple to join the Club. It didn’t take
much convincing.
Summers by the pool, family dinners and bingo nights, 4th of July
parties and holiday celebrations are just a few shared memories this
couple reminisces about. They are excited to make their own memories
here as members and are already very involved. Pickleball and tennis
are top of the list and of course taking advantage of the pool, dining
as a couple and meeting new friends have already been part of their
weekly Club routine.
Joseph and Alexa are relatable, up for anything and in and out of
Wichita regularly. Married on the islands of Turks and Caicos, these
two love the thrill of travel. Concerts, beaches, laughing and their pup,
Lady, are also passions. Though life keeps them busy, they are thankful
to be grounded at WCC. Looking to the future, the Houliks are excited
to raise a family of their own and provide the same WCC lifestyle their
parents gave them. Happy memory making, Joseph and Alexa!

Have you ever met a family that immediately pulls you in from simple
engagement with their warm, effortless style? Well, the Vos family is
that family. Matthew and Elizabeth see the full value of raising their
children in the surroundings of the Club and already have a close
connection to life at WCC.
When they moved to Wichita a few months ago, the Voses
immediately knew they wanted to join the Club. To have their children
involved in School of Sport and all the junior programs is priority,
especially to Elizabeth who has fond memories of growing up at WCC
alongside her siblings. Their oldest, Paxton, has at 3 already begun
conquering the tennis courts with his buddy Rex. Marlowe, their petite
and determined 8-month-old daughter, has quickly taken a liking to
the zero-entry pool.
Elizabeth, daughter to Charlie and Marla Chandler, grew up in
Wichita, but has spent the past 10 years in Colorado, where she met
and fell in love with Matthew. Growing up on a ranch just north of
Seattle, Matthew is the definition of a hardworking husband, father
and businessman. The couple started their family in Denver, where
Matt owned a business and worked in real estate while Elizabeth grew
her career in IT.
With their wedding reception at WCC, shared love for Wichita and
Elizabeth’s ties to the city, the Voses were certain the move to Wichita
was written in their story. Putting down roots, Matthew is dedicated
in his new position with Murfin Drilling Company and continues his
work in real estate. Elizabeth is busy running her online marketing
and communications business, taking on home projects and keeping
their family of four organized. Spending time with family and friends,
traveling, game nights, cheering on the Wildcats and getting involved
in the community are passions of the Voses. Matt and Elizabeth can’t
wait to spend the rest of forever with their children in Wichita and in
the luxury of WCC amidst friends and family.

GOLF
The Vickers League, men’s golf league-play, is now in its second season
and WCC members are hooked. “We have a full field again this year
and we’ve made some exciting format changes to keep everyone in the
hunt down the stretch,” says Phillip Prude, head golf professional.
The league features a six-week regular season engaging 12 teams of
six golfers each in friendly, albeit spicy, competition. After golf, members
stay and enjoy great WCC camaraderie. The season ends with a three-
week playoff run with championship and consolation flights. Phillip
and company are looking forward to an exciting playoff to crown a new
team of Vickers League champions.

what keeps me

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF
20
It might be every Club parent’s best-kept secret: this world that kids
disappear into every day at WCC is also a world of opportunity for
mom and dads. School of Sport is a stimulating environment for
children over the summer months in which friendships are made, life
lessons are learned, skills are developed and parents get a three-hour
break from their children.
It’s rare to find an all-inclusive educational program for children that
not only teaches lifetime sports but truly educates kids on what it takes
to grow into young, successful adults. Wichita Country Club offers
this exciting and educational environment for kids 4-17 along with the
perfect slip-away for mom and dad from the normal chaos called life.
School of Sport is divided into three sports: golf, tennis and
swimming. Start your children at an early age and they are sure to
participate in all three sports. Children are grouped by age and have a
set routine to rotate each hour from one area of the Club to the next.
It’s quite the orchestrated event by WCC staff and if you’ve ever tried
herding cats, you can imagine the staff power it takes to transfer the
4- to 6-year-old crowd.
Besides the obvious bonus of children learning three basic lifetime
sports, certain to come in handy at future corporate events, parents are
thrilled with the extra effort put forth by the coaches to teach these
children how to respect authority and each other, make new friends and
grow as individuals. Mom of four, Courtney Darrah, puts it this way:
“Our children learn how to be teammates. I watch children help each
other with everything from swim caps to sunscreen. They remind each
other to remove hats when passing through the Clubhouse and lend a
friend a belt for the golf course.”
These tiny adults are transformed in the blink of an eye. Families like
the Haags have watched their girls participate in WCC programming
for the past 10 years. Best friends have been made, tootsie rolls of lost
count have been scooped from the golf shop and endless laughs have
been shared.
“It is the greatest feeling to see our kids having so much fun. They
love moving from each area of the Club and School of Sport allows
me a few ‘free’ hours each morning,” explains Kim Haag. “The best
part is hearing about all the funny things that happen each day. The
tricky part is coming home with messes of clothes each day but we are
working on it.”21
While the children reap the benefits of School of Sport, WCC
parents particularly enjoy the social aspect that has developed over the
years. It is routine for moms and dads to meet over their lunch hour
while they wait for their kiddos to wrap up their morning routines.
Lawn furniture overlooking the putting green is fully occupied while
parents socialize and catch up over Arnold Palmers then grab a bite
to eat under the shaded pool deck that is the current social hot spot.
School of Sport isn’t just for little Joey and Annie! Parents put full
trust in the WCC staff who pour their hearts and passion into hours
and hours with these kids. It’s vital parents are as satisfied as their kids.
Assistant Tennis Pro Michael Bond explains, “It can become a great
challenge to make no two days feel the same for the children. We are
all trying our best to offer a one-of-a-kind program and experience for
these children and that requires zero boredom!”
And Chesley Kilgore adds, “It is so exciting to work with kids every
day. Every day is different and it’s extremely rewarding to motivate kids
who are willing to try new things!”
The three pillars of each program, Phillip, Rex and Randy, start
planning for the upcoming School of Sport season months before
summer rolls around. Extra, and necessary, staff is hired in all
three departments and training begins. There are run-throughs on
transitioning rotating age groups as well as education on communicating
with children, communicating with parents, child-safety precautions
and how to keep young children focused and learning for 50 minutes
at a time.
If you haven’t been out to the Club to see the excitement that is
School of Sport, be sure to take an early lunch break this summer to
witness all the moving parts and grab a shake-and-go salad down on
the pool deck with the parents. Jake Kuhlman, assistant golf pro and
a leading coach for School of Sport shares, “To have a plethora of kids
in one setting every day brings plenty of energy and excitement to golf
instruction. When the children smile and laugh with you it makes it
all worth it.”
It’s worth it all around.
“We are so lucky at
WCC to have School
of Sport. I don’t know
of any other program
that offers the variety
and quality that School
of Sport provides.
We would have to
enroll with three other
programs to get what
we receive at WCC.
