Captain Zachary Chase Clevenger gave his life in the line of duty on 12/05/2015. At 30

years old, he is the husband of Christina Clevenger and father to Zachary Chase Clevenger

II, who was born June 30, 2016. Zach, a loving husband to Christina and father to baby

Chase, couldn’t wait for "baby C" to arrive and was so excited to be a dad. Zach was a

true family man who worked hard to provide for his wife and unborn child. Zach was an

avid hunter and fisherman who loved to be outdoors. He loved to work in his small orchard

at home and enjoyed woodworking with his dad.

Zach was both a professional and volunteer firefighter who loved the fire service. He was a

dedicated public servant, serving as a captain, firefighter, EMT and fire investigator. Zach

also loved to teach about the fire service and fire investigation and was an active instructor.

As a leader and officer in the fire service, he placed emphasis on education and training

and truly led by example. He had a true passion for the fire service and served all his

departments well.

Zach loved a good prank and was always smiling and laughing. Zach gave 110% in

everything that he did and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He lived a life of

dignity, honor, courage, and integrity, selflessly serving and sacrificing for the greater good

of others.

Zach received a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Kentucky University in Fire and

Safety Engineering Technology/Fire, Arson and Explosion Investigation. He was employed

by Matrix Investigation Group, Inc. as a fire investigator since 2007. He served with the

Estill County Fire Department as a part-time professional firefighter and volunteer

firefighter since 2008. He also served with Montgomery County Fire and EMS since 2009

as a Captain, firefighter, and EMT.

Zach had numerous specialties and licensures, including N.A.F.I. Certified Fire and

Explosion Investigator, N.A.F.I Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator, N.A.F.I. Certified Fire

Investigator Instructor, Certified Firefighter I and II (IFSAC), CPR Instructor, EMT-

Basic, Kentucky State Private Investigator, National Fire Academy certification, and

Kentucky Fire Commission Level I instructor.

His professional affiliations included the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF),

the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), the International Association of

Arson Investigators (IAAI), the Kentucky Chapter of IAAI, the Montgomery County

Professional Firefighters Association (IAFF local # 4805), Kentucky Colonel; and National

Society Professional Insurance Investigators (NSPII).

The Captain Zachary Chase Clevenger Memorial Scholarship was established in 2016

in memory of fallen firefighter Zachary Chase Clevenger. Captain Clevenger gave his life in the line

of duty on 12/05/2015. He was a dedicated public servant who displayed selfless service for the

greater good of others. The mission of this scholarship is to provide assistance in the form of a

one-time monetary award to a Junior or Senior student with a Fire & Safety Degree, to be used as

needed to assist with employment post-graduation.

The Captain Zachary Chase Clevenger Memorial Scholarship awards a

one-time $500.00 scholarship based on applicant responses to questions during an interview

process. Areas that will be reviewed during the interview process shall include, but are not limited

to: community service, references, certifications and experience in the fire and investigation

service. Scholarship awards are paid directly to the recipient and are based upon verification that

all qualifying criteria has been met. Scholarships awards are contingent on availability of funding.

Applicants must be Juniors or Seniors at Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in Fire, Arson

& Explosion Investigation; Fire Protection Administration; or Fire Protection & Safety Engineering

Technology. Preference may be given to Fire, Arson & Explosion Investigation applicants.

Applicant must be an active member of a Fire Department (volunteer or professional) and

must provide a letter from the Fire Chief of that department indicating good standing and

active membership.

Applicant must provide a professional Resume with References prior to the application

deadline.

Applicant must be a permanent resident of the United States. Preference may be given to

applicants who reside in and plan to serve in Kentucky.

Cover letter and Resume

Two letters of recommendation, preferably from active member of the fire service or

investigation service.

Letter of good standing from the university's registrar office or student’s advisor.

Cover letter and resume must be submitted and received no later than September 30

(December awards) or February 15 (May awards).

Applicants eligible for an interview will be notified by October 31 (December awards) or

March 31 (May awards) with a date, time and location that the interview will take place.

Applicants will be notified if awarded a scholarship by December 1 (December awards) or

May 1 (May awards).

Award notification will be given by December 1 (December awards) or May 1 (May awards).

Scholarship recipient will receive a one-time monetary award in the amount of $ 500.00 (five

hundred dollars).

Award will be distributed at an awards ceremony, location and date to be announced.
