SPIRITUAL AND COMMUNITYDEVELOPMENT

MAKING JESUS REAL

What a wonderful, marvellous, tremendous, awesome display of talent. Turning on theTalent continues to deliver even more everyyear. What an inspiring celebration of hopefor Emmaus. To all those involved ThankYou, I hope you had a ball, your hours ofeffort were well worth it.

Emmaus is a community that grows stronger through the giftsbrought to the table by its members, and so many of the giftsthat bind us and help us succeed are done in such a waythat they can often go unnoticed. I have been involved withTurning on the Talent and its predecessors for over ten yearsand I am constantly amazed at the generosity, commitment andenthusiasm that it takes to make it happen. This is, of course, true for every event that takes place within our community overa typical year, they don’t just happen. We are blessed by thestudents, parents, staff and friends of Emmaus who give somuch and are so happy to go unnoticed behind the scenes. Atour recent Sports awards, the stage was filled twice by staff andthen students who had volunteered as coaches, managers andreferees this year. There is no doubt we could have filled thestage a third time with parents and friends involved with sport. There is nothing sporting, cultural, educational or spiritual thathappens without so many coming to help behind the scenes. What great examples of Emmaus leadership.

Jesus said when asked about leadership, “Whoever wants tobecome great among you must be your servant, and whoever

wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Mandid not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as aransom for many.”(Matthew 10:43-45)

Making Jesus Real encourages us to be thankful people, noticing and acknowledging the work done by others for us.So, to all those whose leadership has come through theirservice within our community for others, THANKYOU for thejoy, spirit and life you gift to our Emmaus Community.

Take Care,

Mark RobertsHead of Spiritual and Community [email protected]

written just for the purpose of the project with input fromstudents. This script, titled Riley Valentine and the Occupationof Fort Svalbard, dealt with themes and issues that studentscould relate to including family, choices, hope, independenceand being yourself.

The Year 10 students involved in the project were also given theopportunity during Term 3, to work with actors and directorsfrom Queensland Theatre. These professionals helped studentsto create and shape their 15 minute performance, teachingthem valuable skills and listening and utilising their ideas. Thesetheatre professionals were then present for the studentperformances at the Pilbeam Theatre and commented on thestudent work and their ability to work cohesively andcollaboratively together in order to create their performancepiece.

On the performance day, students were given the opportunityto meet other drama students from several different schoolsacross the region and watch their performances. QueenslandTheatre also performed the full script of Riley Valentine andthe Occupation of Fort Svalbard, for the first time in front ofstudents, to show them a director’s perspective on the storyand how they can shape drama texts in different ways.

COUNSELLING NEWS

YEAR 9 STAND UP FLASH EVENT

In Week 4, the year 9s exited their classrooms to find a largebanner of ‘the pose’ hung up in their eating area, and theywere invited to take turns painting it. This Flash Art event waspromoting the Stand Up program, an initiative developed bythe Emmaus Counselling team and students to explore whatbullying means and how to address it. ‘The Pose’ signifiesthe varying stances we can take in treatment of ourselvesand others- stand over, sit down, stand up. Students wereasked what they thought about bullying. Some suggested thatit seems bullying is everywhere (online, at school) and thatoften the bullies do not know the effect of their behaviour -Sometimes a joke can go too far. One student mentioned itcan be possible to stand over the self and self-bully, by thinkingnegatively about themselves, and sitting down to and believingthese limiting self-beliefs. In trying to stand up against bullying, students spoke of trying to look out for each other, beingsensitive to those around them, and offering support (in privateor public) to those affected. The event offered an opportunityfor students to explore their reflections of bullying and what itmeans to be a Stand Up student, and a Stand Up school. Staytuned for further flash events to come!!

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

DONATIONS OF SCHOOLSUPPLIES

As students are starting to clean out theirlockers, they are being encouraged todonate their unused and partially used

school stationery by placing it in designated wheelie bins. Thebins will be located inside the Main Street and Yaamba RoadOffices. Emails have been sent out to students advising them ofthis. These second hand supplies will be collected by St Vincentde Pauls, and with other collections, put in a container ofsupplies that go to countries in need.

As you would be aware, approximately half the world’spopulation lives on less than $2 a day which means it’s almostimpossible for them to afford school supplies, so any donationby students of notepads (even partially used), pencils, colouredpencils, erasers etc is extremely beneficial. They can alsodonate reading books if they wish, as these are in need as well.

It all helps.

FROM THE ROCKHAMPTON POLICE

Unlocked homes and cars cause property crime toincrease – Have you secured your house and car?

On Tuesday 18 October, Acting Assistant Commissioner BruceMcNAB launched a strategy ‘Property Security Partnership’that will focus on reducing the amount of reported propertycrime in the Capricornia District.

The Capricornia District sustained increases across all majorproperty offences in 2015/16 compared to the previous year.

These offences involved burglaries to homes, stealing vehiclesor stealing from cars. Items stolen included mobile phones, laptops, wallets and cash. In almost every case the home orvehicle was unlocked at the time of the offence.

It also involved offenders stealing bank cards and using the paywave function to buy goods.

Police are wanting the community to focus on security in andaround the home, and this can be achieved throughestablishing strategies and developing new habits to reduce thelikelihood of becoming a victim of a crime.

How to avoid becoming a victim to an opportunisticoffence?

• Ensure that your vehicle is locked when you are notusing it, this includes when your vehicle is parked inthe driveway, carport, or garage.

• Do not leave valuables in your vehicle when you arenot using it. This may include car/house keys, wallets, GPS devices, money, handbags, computers,or mobile phones.

• Get into the habit every time you return home, andplace your car keys, handbag, wallet, mobile phoneand personal items in a cupboard or a safe place thatis out of sight and is unknown to other people.

• Ensure that your house is visible to your neighboursand passers-by so that any thieves can be observed. This may mean trimming back trees and shrubs.

• Security lighting can be installed around theperimeter of your property, including over entry ways, along your driveway and the back of the house, revealing any possible hiding places for thieves.

Unlocked cars

Police want to remind the community that it is an offencenot to secure your vehicle when you are not using it. Thepenalty for failing to secure your vehicle is a $48 infringement.Police do not want to issue members of the community withinfringement notices for this offence, and would much ratherwork in partnership with the community by implementingstrategies to prevent property crime from occurring.
