FROM THE PRESIDENTS
Dear Temple Shalom Community, As you know, in June we decided to re-open the synagogue based on the re-opening of the Grand Strand area. However, even though attendance was very good the first week it had dwindled to only a few participants. Streaming on Facebook has been very
successful and many participate in these weekly virtual services. In light of the increase in Covid-19 cases, the Board unanimously agreed, at the Board of Directors meeting on Sunday, July 12, 2020, that in the interest of all congregants, Temple Shalom has again suspended all activities scheduled to be held at the Temple, including all Shabbat services, the High Holiday services and Sisterhood meetings until further notice. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the pandemic information and follow all local, state and federal recommendations regarding public meetings, etc. We hope to resume regular events and programs as soon as is safely possible. However, even though we are currently closed, we, at Temple Shalom, do not quit. We don’t give up or give in because of the coronavirus. Instead, we steel our resolve and move forward to the future. We accept the challenge of what’s next. We know these are trying times, but we will persevere. We all know that it will take cooperation on all our parts, as lay leaders, volunteers and as congregants. All of us make up the community. None of us are spared the frustrations and inconveniences of this: relationships tested by quarantine, the redundancy of daily life in quarantine, financial worries and the anxiety of not knowing when and how this crisis will end. How we respond to this crisis will define us for a generation. And so, we will continue our live stream Friday night and once a month Saturday Shabbat services on Facebook. A weekly email will continue to be sent to the entire congregation until further notice. Our Board of Directors is currently hard at work laying the plans for virtual High Holiday services, which is no small feat. The services may look different than what we are used to, but we assure you that you will have a very meaningful experience nonetheless. We will continue to keep you all informed and updated. Please let us know if you need any assistance. Wishing everyone continued good health. We hope to see you all soon in the near future. L’Shalom,
Laurie and Cookie

A Jewish father’s perception of Zen
Be here now. Be someplace else later. Is that so complicated? Drink tea and nourish life. With the first sip... joy. With the second... satisfaction. With the third, peace. With the fourth, a danish. Wherever you go, there you are. Your luggage is another story. Accept misfortune as a blessing. Do not wish for perfect health or a life without problems. What would you talk about? The journey of a thousand miles Begins with a single "oy." There is no escaping karma. In a previous life, you never called, you never wrote, you never visited. And whose fault was that? Zen is not easy. It takes effort to attain nothingness. And then what do you have? Bupkes.
The Tao does not speak. The Tao does not blame. The Tao does not take sides. The Tao has no expectations. The Tao demands nothing of others. The Tao is not Jewish. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Forget this and attaining Enlightenment will be the least of your problems. Let your mind be as a floating cloud. Let your stillness be as the wooded glen. And sit up straight. You'll never meet the Buddha with such
rounded shoulders.
Be patient and achieve all things. Be impatient and achieve all things faster. To find the Buddha, look within. Deep inside you are ten thousand flowers. Each flower blossoms ten thousand times. Each blossom has ten thousand petals. You might want to see a specialist. To practice Zen and the art of Jewish motorcycle maintenance, do the following: Get rid of the motorcycle. What were you thinking?
Be aware of your body. Be aware of your perceptions. Keep in mind that not every physical sensation is a symptom of a terminal illness. The Torah says, "Love thy neighbor as thyself." The Buddha says there is no "self."
So, maybe you are off the hook.

Anniversary
WE REMEMBER BURT KRAMER
A FOUNDING MEMBER OF TEMPLE SHALOM
Died JULY 21, 2020
Our condolences to Natalie. May his memory be for
a blessing.
He will long be remembered as a very special
person.
A Message from Natalie Kramer
Burt and I were married 40 years. Burt was originally from Brook-
lyn, NY. Prior to our marriage he had 3 sons with his first wife.
Burt was 90 and one half years old at his death on July 21st.
During our marriage, Burt was a life insurance sales agent. His job
required him to relocate often, so we moved around a lot. It wasn’t
until we moved to Myrtle Beach that we found a permanent home.
We have been living here for 17 years.
To our many friends I thank you for being here to help me through
this. I will never forget him and I know you will remember Burt as
well.

Sisterhood News – August 2020
THINGS ARE HEATING UP!
And not just because we are moving into August! I wanted to take this time to thank Jessica Forman, Laurie Ward and an anonymous donor for add-ing an additional donation to their Sisterhood dues check. It was appreciated. Our amended constitution was ratified with an almost unanimous YES with one abstention. Thank you to all of you for taking the time to vote. Please remember that those of you who are Temple Shalom members or a spouse/partner of a Temple Shalom member in good standing, nothing changes. However, if you are not a member of Temple Shalom, this means that as of July 1, 2020, you may join Sisterhood for 1 fiscal year. At the end of the fiscal year you must decide to become a member of Temple Shalom. If you do not join, you will not be able to continue your Sisterhood mem-bership.
