We have two types of lock- downs; a modified lockdown is used when the threat is not on the campus and a full lockdown is when the threat is on campus. In a modified lockdown, all of the exterior doors are locked and no one is permitted to enter or leave the building without an escort from administration. Classes continue on as normal except for classes that require a student to leave the building to go to another building. This is one of the reasons we asked for the bond to create an in- terconnected campus for the majority of our classes, especially elementary grades. There is no outside recess or PE. In a full lockdown staff and students shelter in place, lights are turned off, and all doors on campus are locked. Only emergency personnel are permitted to enter the cam- pus until law enforcement or administration gives the all clear. If we are going to evacuate the campus, like we did when we had the fire this year, we would notify parents as to where they should go to pick up their child through the School Messenger app. Please make sure that your contact information is up to date for phone, text, and email. What should parents do when they receive a lockdown notification? The number one thing is do not come to the school, you will only complicate things. A School Lockdown-What does it mean?

What Parents Should Know About A School Lockdown. Dear Parents and Community Members, A Parent’s worst fears come to light when they get the notification that their child’s school is a lockdown situation. Books She Has Wrote Joy Mercy Watson Series Because of Winn-Dixie Flora and Ulysses Louisiana’s Way Home Raymie Nightingale Good Rosie

Description: One of the main reasons I enjoy this author is because she has such a great imagination. One example is the Mercy Watson series. The main character is Pig named Mercy. Mercy dose all these things like stop a robber from robbing their house at night. In her book Louisiana's Way Home, she writes how the parents were acrobats in a circus. And how there is a curse in her family because the great grandfather sawed his wife in half and refused to put her back together, in a circus act. And those are just a few of her books that include great imagination. Another reason I love her writing is be-cause she is so descriptive. She can paint a great picture in your head. In her books Bink and Gollie she talks about how tall a mountain is and it paints an awesome picture in your head, because she’s so suspifice. One of my favorite books she has written is Louisiana's Way Home I love this book so much because it has so much drama and acton, but at the same time there isn’t too much drama and action. I also love the animals in this book, and how much Louisiana loves her pets. Kate DiCamillo writes her books with a lot of passion and heart. -Kate Falagan

Victoria Aveyard Born: July 27, 1990

Awards: She won three #1New York Times best selling books and USA best selling books

Although I have only read one book from Victoria Aveyard, and I am already a huge fan. I read the Red Queen, the first book in her Red Queen series. Red Queen is about a world the is divided by blood color. The people with silver blood are considered gods, and they have abilities. For example, there is the ability to control fire, the ability to control water, and there is even the ability the control minds of others. Mare, the main character, has red blood. But she has an ability also. She can, not only control electricity, but she can also create it. She is one of the few reds in her world that have sil-ver abilities, they are stronger than red and silver together. I found myself not being able to put down this book and I can't wait to get the next book, Glass Sword. I love the way she writes her books and hope she keeps writing them. She has written five books in the Red Queen series and her sixth book will come out sometime in 2019. Overall I think Victoria Aveyard is a 10 out of 10 author.

Description: I enjoy L.M. Montgomery’s books because she describes her characters and the scenes in her novels so well through her writing. Although I have really enjoyed the books that I have read by L.M. Montgomery my favorite would have to be Anne of Green Gables. This is my favorite book by L.M. Mont-gomery because it was the first book she published. It was published in 1908. Also, this is my favorite book that she wrote because it was the beginning of the Anne of Green Gables series. In this book Anne Shirley has first come to Green Gables after she was adopted. I enjoyed reading all the troubles and ad-ventures she and her friends had in this book. I want to read all of the Anne of Green Gables books throughout my life. Cites www.wiki.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_Maud_Montgomery#Legacy

Rick Riordan Biographical Information Born: June 5th, 1964 in San Antonio, Texas Wife: Becky Riordan Kids: Haley and Patrick Schooling: The University of Texas at San Antonio, and The University of Texas at Austin.

Growing up: Rick was an only child. When he was in high school, at Alamo Heights, he wrote in the school newspaper. After writing in the paper Rick started to love Greek mythology. Interesting facts 1. Rick taught for eight years in the subjects English and Reading at a high school before he became a popular writer. 2. Rick and his wife share the same birthday. 3. Riordan started his books as bedtime stories for his two sons. 4. His youngest son has ADHD and dyslexia. That's why he came up with this idea for his books. Books The Lightning Thief The Mark of Athena The Sea of Monsters The House of Hades The Titan’s Curse Blood of Olympus The Battle of the Labyrinth The Red Pyramid The Last Olympian The Throne of Fire The Lost Hero The Serpent’s Shadow The Son of Neptune

Description: Rick Riordan is by far my favorite author. He is my favorite be-cause the books he writes never get boring. At every single flip of the page, he draws me into the book more and more. It is almost impossible to not believe the things that are going on inside of the book. I’ve read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Heros of Olympus series, and I have almost finished The Kane Chronicles and I’ve truly enjoyed every single book. My favorite book by him is probably The Lightning Thief. It is my favorite book because it got me to start to love reading. Before I started reading Rick Riordan’s books I never really enjoyed reading. He made The Lightning Theif so entertaining that I felt like I was one of the Half-Bloods on HalfBlood Hill. This is why I picked Rick Riordan as my favorite author. -Elise Schneiter Here are the links to the websites I used. http://rickriordan.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Riordan

2. Author of 14 books

3. Couldn’t get to the News Paper business but is now a book writer Books Written: Diary of a W impy k id (books 1-13)

Although it was quite a challenge to chose only one of my favorite authors, Jeff Kinney turned up on top, one way or anoth-er. It’s Jeff Kinney that’s my number-one author and illustrator because of his amazing writing style, and his absolutely hilarious illustrations to go with whatever storyline he comes up with. Of all the wonderful books Jeff Kinney has written, I’ve only ever read three. These books are the 1st, 2nd, and 7th books of the humorous series of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I honestly don’t know which book is my favorite, though. The I’ve read have such great structure, situations, and illustrations. This is why my favorite author and illustrator is the one and only Jeff Kinney! By: Morgan Truth

K-12 Conferences and Testing Dates Page 6

This spring, Florence- Carlton Elementary and Middle School will participate again in the Smarter Balanced Assessment for English Language Arts and Math. The testing window for grades 3 through 8 will be March 20th through May 24th. High school will no longer be taking the Smarter Balanced Test. The SBAC assessments offer significant improvements over tests of the past; including writing at every grade, new question types, and performance tasks that ask students to demonstrate an array of research, writing, and problem solving skills. Since the new assessments measure higher standards, the definition of grade-level performance is also more rigorous than it was with old tests. For the first few years, fewer students may meet grade level standards. It’s important to note that this does not mean that students are doing worse than previous years, but rather that students are being assessed by more challenging academic standards than before. Please feel free to contact your teachers for their specific test-ing week. For more information about the Smarter Balanced assessments visit http://www.smarterbalanced.org. Students in grades 4, 8 and 10 will participate in the Science CRT with a testing window of February 28th to March 26th. Feel free to contact your teachers for their specific testing week. Preparing your child for testing Shared with permission by Ed Extras: Helpful information about learning brought to you by Reading Rockets, Colorin Colorado, and LD OnLine Testing is used in schools for two main purposes. One is to find out how well an individual student is learning in the classroom. For instance, teachers can test how well a child is responding to reading instruction by using assessments that measure specific skills necessary for fluent reading. The other purpose is to find out how well the school is meeting local and national benchmarks for student achievement. For this purpose schools use standardized tests, usually administered in the spring. How to help: Take a deep breath. Step away from the flashcards. As a parent, the most important way you can help your child do well on tests is to read with your child regularly, talk with her about her experiences, and provide a quiet work space at home. When well-meaning parents focus too much on test results, they put undue pressure on young children. For kids who struggle with attention or memorization tasks, testing can be extremely stressful because it requires students to draw entirely on these skills. To help prepare for routine classroom assessments: • Provide a variety of books, children’s magazines, and enriching experiences to spark your child’s curiosity and build vocabulary • Make sure your child gets time and space for homework • Make sure your child gets enough rest and a well-balanced diet • Consult your child’s teacher to find out if there are specific skills you can practice at home To help prepare for standardized tests: • Ask the teacher for the testing schedule and a practice test so that you can familiarize your child with the format ahead of time so he knows what to expect • Respond to any concerns your child has with encouragement and support. Emphasize that there are lots of ways to express what you know, and that these tests are just one measure Interpreting test scores Ask the teacher to share the results of standardized testing to see if your child’s performance on the test is consistent with his or her performance in the classroom. Meet with the teacher about any concerns you have. If you are interested, you can also ask how the school compares to other schools in the district, state, and across the country. http://www.readingrockets.org/pdfs/edextras/23154-en.pdf
