Ventspils City Festival on August 3–5

The event "Kite Party 2012" of July 26 – July 29 taking place in the surfer zone of the Ventspils beach will once again summon kite-surfers to learn, compete, and entertain the visitors with colourful sails in the coastal skies.

On July 14, which is the second Saturday of July , Ventspils will celebrate the Sea Festival, as a proper seashore city should. There will be singing in the port pub, as well as the Dragon Boat competition, which has already turned into a tradition. There will also be dancing and other activities worthy of a true sailor, meanwhile the younger residents and their friends will enjoy a range of thematic activities and the creation of a Dream Ship.

The city Festival is held in Ventspils each year during the first week of august. From august 3 until august 5, the locals and guests will be entertained by a range of events suitable for various tastes – among them the international Baltic Flower carpet Festival and a parade, as well as the Grand Prix and other awards by the Ventspils city council, and even a concert of the band “Prāta vētra”.

From July 20 until 22 Ventspils will bring together the Baltic Sea region motorbike riders for the 9th time at the "Kurland Bike meet”. Besides the impressive motorbike parade, the NOrDic STreeTFiGHTer cHam-PiONSHiP 2012 or street competi-tion will be held in latvia for the first time. The listeners will be en-tertained by the band "Jumprava".

vents can be exchanged for paper vents at the Tourism Information Centre, where you will find all the information about the possi-bilities to use vents.The campaign "Ventspils vents" during the VII creative excellency festival "ADwards 2012" gained the Grand Prix and the first place in

popular voting, as well as received the gold-en order in the integrated campaigns cate-gory, meanwhile, it earned a golden hammer in the advertising campaign category and a silver hammer in the PR category at the 13th international advertising festival "Golden Hammer".

Play the game "Travel with vents"To increase the amount of earned vents, everybody is invited to participate in an exciting game, by visiting places, where you

can use vents and get a campaign sticker in return. 5 stickers will buy you 500 vents, but 10 – 1000 vents, and 15 – 1500 vents.

The participant's form with the campaign stickers can be exchanged for real vents at the Tourism Information Centre.

The new life of Liel-irbe Baptist ChurchFrom Lielirbe recently moved the Baptist house of worship which is the most recent exhibit of the Seaside Open air museum 26 , generates great interest among the visitors not only as a proper example of a church of the previous century with an au-thentic interior, but also as the venue for spiritual events, for instance, weddings.

A breath of fresh air in the historic rooms of the castlein the livonian Order castle, 25 each step will convince you that the history is still alive. It is reminded to us by the reconstructed 1st floor premises and by the extensive exhi-bits, and even the events are planned with history in mind. To have a fun memory of the visit to the castle, you can take a picture at the picture frame on the side of Venta.

Crafts skills at the House of CraftsBesides the City Festival events, the House of crafts 34 will host the II Inter-national Craft Forum: Pottery. In collabo-ration with the Latvian Center of Crafts, the Forum will organize a ceramics fair where all enthusiasts will be able to par-ticipate in ceramics experiments and take part in preparation of pottery clay and paper kiln. The eleventh season is now open at the Beach aquapark 28 , allowing the visitors to stay outdoors and enjoy the sun to the fullest. For leisure activities, the visitors are

offered to enjoy pools, slides, activities for kids, bubble baths, and saunas. Starting from August 15, it is time for the water amusement Park 29 .

Twenty four extravagant works of art in a form of glass fibre cows are now decorat-ing the streets, parks, and squares of the port city. These are the participants of "Ventspils Cow Parade 2012", who proudly embody the creative work of the world's most popular art and patronage project.

The works of increas-ing the height of the main inhabitant of the park – the mound – still continue. Seagate within a hand's reachThe excursion ship “Hercogs Jēkabs” (Duke Jacob) 31 like a dedicated guide takes the lo-cals and the guests along Venta river mouth down to the very seagate several times a day. Even though there are plenty of places to go on a walk in Ventspils, the locals and guests alike gladly go on a walk down the Southern Pier promenade 68 , catch a breath resting against the green lighthouse and be on the ground and in the water at the same time. The place also offers a Observation Tower 69 , the fishing ship “azova” 70 , the chain chair 71 and the striped friend Sailor cow 72 .

Between anchors and water-liliesIt can be an exciting and fun experience to go on a walk in the Seaside Park 35 , where besides overcoming obstacles in the Jungle Trail 36 you can meet wooden animals you have never seen before, but on the anchor Path 37 you can tread your trail alongside the massive and heavy anchors.

Culture section near Town SquareThe people have always considered the old town of Ventspils as a place, which bears evidence of the bygone centuries, but does not cease to surprise us with the pres-ence of modern architecture. Here, you will see St.Nicholas’ ev. lutheran church 38 , the main library 39 , Digital centre 40 and the international writers' and Translators' House 41 . Extreme sports and recreation all at onceVentspils takes care also of the extreme sports enthusiasts. They can enjoy one of the most modern skate parks 63 in the Eastern Europe, which is used for training sessions and organising various competitions. A nice "cherry on the top" for the visitors – you can use the skate park free of charge.

The Pārventa library 43 is a well-earned jewel of the city. It attracts the visitors not only with its beautiful premises and rich col-lection of literature, but also as a place, where creative meetings, concerts, and excellent performances are held.

Pārventa Library or "the palace of light" of Ventspils

Ventspils is a city which cannot be imagined without its flowers. They are its soul which has turned visible in the uncountable flower beds, pyramids, and sculptures: “Duck family” 44 , “underwater world” 45 , “Hare family” 46 , “ladybirds” 47 , “Bob-sleigh team” 48 , flower bed “Sea Stones” and “Flower cow” 49 , “Basketball Ball” 50 and “ladybird

Family” 51 . And you cannot forget also the Flower clock 52 , which rings the precise time each hour on Lielais prospekts. There are eight fountains in Ventspils: “Ship observer” 53 , “Sun boats” 54 , “mill stone” 55 , “Dune pine” 56 , “Drops” 57 , “Vidumupīte stream fountain” 58 and the fountain in reņķa Garden pond 59 .

Ventspils by bicycle

Since the art and patro-nage project "Cow p a ra d e 2002", 6 cows still remain in Ventspils: “latvian black” 73 , “Sea cow” 74 , “Karma” 75 , “ms. moo-Dunk” 76 , “life is beautiful” 77 and “Oil” 78 . Over the course of the 10 years that they have been here, the cows have become an intrinsic part of the city and a peculiar symbol of it.

First witness of the cow parade

Both the grown-ups and the young can mount a bicycle in Ventspils to go on a lei-surely ride along the cycling lanes, which wind through nearly all parts of the city for a total distance of 34 km. For the riders' con-venience, 624 cycle racks of peculiar forms are set up in the city. See the cycling routes marked on the map on p. 4.

A perfect place for walks

The magic of the Blue Flag beachVentspils beach 66 every summer lures its visitors from near and far with its white sand, "sun bathing" in the dunes, and improved environment, because unchanging quality

is a well-tested value. Select beach areas are available for surfing and nudism. The certifi-cate of the “Blue Flag” testifies of compliance with international quality standards.

Nature tourism near VentspilsStaldzene 64 is a popular walking area for the locals and guests alike, who enjoy not only the city "chic" but also untamed sea shores, the pine forests, and the scent of smoked fish. For those, who enjoy unhurried relaxation, the improved Būšnieku lake swimming site 65 and an opportunity to rent a boat will be a perfect option to spend their time.

Outdoors sportsVentspils sets itself apart from other cities of Latvia not only by its free of charge car parking, but also by giving a chance to enjoy free of charge sporting activities. At several places – in reņķa Garden 67 , Seaside Park 35 , Pārventa Forest Park 79 , adventure Park 32 , in the centre of Pārventa near the library 43 , in the “Sun corner” 80 or in the square between the Saules and Aizsaules Street – open air gym equipment has been set up.

This green corner of the city 67 is a place, where each and every open-air nature lover will feel at home. Here, the childhood fanta-sies have been embodied in unusual nature objects, while concerts and dancing events

are organised under the tree shade during the summers, but the joggers, Nordic walk-ers, and gymnasts have grown to love this garden for active recreation.

To make sure that Ventspils in the children's memory remains like a place to go back to, you must visit the children's Town 60 and the children's park “Fantasy” 61 . Here, the youngest of all will enjoy various playtime

activities, fairy-tale creatures, and fun events every Sunday throughout the year. The kids can now enjoy the play corner in the Big Square 62 every day.
