Last Fall St. Boniface created and organized a Stewardship Council composed of six Parishioners. As members of St. Boniface, you embraced our inaugural Stewardship Series, “Abundant Blessings shared through Spirituality, Service and Sacrifice”. In order to make stewardship a way of life at St. Boniface, the council is expanding and is in search of parishioners who are willing to take stewardship to a new level. One thing that we all learned during our Abundant Blessings series was that there are so many parishioners that have skillsets that have gone unacknowledged. We are looking for individuals to help with Creativity, Communications and Celebrations. Creativity: “Make visible, what without you, may have never been seen.” R. Bresson. The Creativity representatives will have a significant role in our stewardship series. We are looking for individuals who are willing to share their ideas and are able to work well with a small group to achieve greatness. We anticipate that this group may meet fairly regularly leading up to our series. Communication: “…effective communication requires more than an exchange of information. When done right, communication fosters understanding, strengthens relationships, improves teamwork, and builds trust.” L. Papadapoulos. The Communications team will be in charge of our stewardship communications. We are looking for individuals who are word-savvy, grammatically retentive and enjoy communicating with others. Communications will be important in the early phases of our series, throughout our series and following-up on our series. Celebration: “The more you PRAISE and celebrate your LIFE, the more there is in life to CELEBRATE.” O. Winfrey. The Celebration committee will be responsible for organizing and coordinating different activities that promote fellowship and community. If you love throwing parties this committee is for you. We foresee this committee helping with a "kick-off" event, possibly one event during our series and another event celebrating the fruits of our stewardship series. More information will be forthcoming in the near future on how you might use your gifts for the good of our parish.

Dear Parishioners,

Each February, our students in grades five and eight, participate in an Information for Growth assessment. One aspect of that “test” gives the student an opportunity to share their feelings about a variety of topics. I think it’s important to share some of those results with you...

100% of those students agreed that they “like my parish (church).”

100% agreed that “People in my parish (church) care about helping others.”

100% replied that the “school religion program helps me grow in my Catholic faith.”

100% agreed that they “belong to a ‘youth-friendly’ parish.”

Friends, that is a real testament to the gift that you have shared with our children! Thank you for that gift, and your on-going support of the school. This is statistical evidence that your actions (big and little) have a positive effect on our students. Many blessings be on you for all that you do and are.

Parishioners who travel through our parking lot during pick-up and drop off times are asked to keep a close eye for “walkers through the lot”. We often have many parents and children walking between cars. Our “walkers”, likewise, are asked to watch for our drivers as they search for a parking spot. It’s easy for either group to miss the other. Let’s keep our parking lot safe for all!

ENROLL NOW!! Registration opens next week to our broader Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area. Please call now if you are interested in enrolling your child at St. Boniface School.

Kindergarten screening is Wednesday, April 6. Parents with incoming kindergarteners NOT in our preschool should call the school office, 656-6917, to schedule an appointment for this screening.

Kindergarten visitation (incoming students) will be Tuesday, May 3, 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. The kindergarten child and a parent are asked to attend. Please mark your calendars and save the date.

Registration for the Annual Cinco de Abril Volleyball Tournament (Friday, April 1) is underway. Registration forms can be found in the church lobby or by calling the school office, 656-6917. Sign-up for a night of great fun! All proceeds benefit our 7th grade Space Camp trip.

School will be dismissed on Holy Thursday at 1:00 p.m. to

begin Easter vacation. School will resume on Tuesday, March

29.

The faculty, staff and students of Father McGivney Catholic High School would like to thank those that sponsored, donated items for our silent auction, volunteered and attended our Trivia Night on March 5. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus in Edwardsville for hosting the event. We had a record-setting year in both attendance and funds raised and we were simply blown away by the generous support for our school. With over 300 people in attendance, the event raised over $14,000! This money raised will go towards helping offset the cost of educating our students. Your generosity allows us to continue to grow our school and build upon our already strong foundation. THANK YOU!

St. Boniface RCIA-RCIC

Monday, March 14 @ 6:30 p.m., Acorn Room

Topic: Review How to go to Confession and Stump the Staff

Presenter: Fr. Jeff

Fasting From Other Than Food

There are two weeks remaining until Easter Sunday. Here are some ideas about fasting from the Little Black Book of Lenten reflections. Our hope is that our Lenten observance has awakened our spirit to see some things we hadn’t noticed. The purpose of fasting is to aid in this process; to open up a space inside of ourselves to make room for the Spirit to work.

There are other things to fast from besides food. Fasting from media: from time spent on television, computers and phones. Fasting from personal pleasures: from smoking or drinking. Fasting from shopping. Fasting from eating out and then donating the value of that skipped meal to your CRS Rice Bowl. Fasting from bad habits: from swearing, gossip, racist jokes or violent language.

Our Church has intentionally left what Lenten practices you

choose up to you. You are to pick those things that mean the

most to your relationship with our Lord. The only Church rules left for you to observe are not eating meat on the two

remaining Fridays and observing a food fast on Good Friday.

Lent is hard work – Happy Lent!

~Deacon Dan

Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein

In the Gospel from John, Jesus is again teaching the crowds in the vicinity of the Temple. The scribes and the Pharisees approach Jesus, bringing a woman who has been caught in the act of adultery. They put to Jesus the question of what ought to be done in this case. As in previous encounters, they are trying to confine Jesus to a yes or no answer with either choice being one that would contradict what they assume to be Jesus’ teaching or the teachings of the Hebrew Laws. Jesus avoids the trap, however, by offering an answer that was not anticipated by those who posed the question. Jesus, after writing on the ground with his finger, addresses those who stand before him and suggests that the one without sin cast the first stone. Jesus then returns to his writing. This Scripture reading, by the way, is the only evidence we have of Jesus writing. Yet there are no specific details about what he wrote. Since we do not know, we can only imagine. Based on Jesus’ teaching I like to imagine that it would be a word like love or mercy. In Aramaic the word rahhem (verb); means to show mercy, to love, the chief Hebrew term is hesed, God's covenant "lovingkindness.”

In teaching or aiding someone in remembering meaning in something, sometimes acronyms are used. Here are some ideas for the word mercy. M- Move; Mercy should move us to action. It is not simply feeling sorrow or empathy for someone. We should take action to help them or, as in the Hebrew definition, show them “lovingkindness”. E- Encounter; with mercy we encounter God in our hearts and share that encounter with others. R- Remember; we recall the times in our life that we were given mercy by God and by others. C- Compassion; is concern for the trouble of another. Y- Yes; the meaning of yes used as an adjective is; as you say; truly. When we think of mercy, like the mercy of Jesus, we are moved to action. We encounter God and others. We remember when we experienced mercy. We have compassion for others, and we say yes to truly loving our neighbor as ourselves. Maybe as a meditation you can sit with the word mercy and write your own acronym(s). May the peace and mercy of Christ be in your hearts.

ONE BREAD ONE CUP LITURGICAL LEADERSHIP YOUTH CONFERENCE

JUNE 27 - JULY 1 St. Meinrad Archabbey - St. Meinrad, IN

This summer, 5 high school students from our parish and Fr. McGivney High School will be attending a 5-day liturgical leadership conference at St. Meinrad Archabbey. “One Bread One Cup” is a summer program in which high school students learn about the Catholic faith hallmarks of Word, Sacrament and Mission. It provides them the formation necessary to become leaders in their parishes and in the world around them at such a critical time in their lives.

For the past 6 years, St. Boniface has actively participated in this program sending 32 participants. OBOC has greatly impacted the lives of those who have attended by helping them to grow in their knowledge and love for the Church; fostering vocations and, in some cases, beginning the discernment process; taking an active role in parish life once they’ve returned by signing up to become Ministers of Communion, Lectors, Cantors, and leading Evening Prayer throughout the year. Three of our participants have or will be serving this year as College Interns for the summer program, leading the next group of high school students to deepen their faith and grow in their relationship with Christ.

If you would like to consider sponsoring a student ($450) or making a donation of any amount towards this wonderful program, please contact Jill Griffin or Fr. Jeff.

Stewardship

“Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.” This is how our Gospel Reading from St. John describes Jesus’ immediate response to when the woman accused of adultery is brought before Him. Immediately after this the Lord says, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

In the original Greek the word used for “bent down” literally meant, “stooped down.” The word describes doing something that was considered very humbling; quite likely Jesus was trying to put the woman at ease, to identify with her. Jesus identifies with the woman, and He makes a gesture to let her know that.

We often speak of seeing Jesus in others, in treating them in a way that reflects love and caring, not judgment. Blessed Mother Teresa (who will officially become a saint this coming September) once stated, “I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, ‘This is hungry Jesus. I must feed Him.’ Or ‘This is sick Jesus who has leprosy and gangrene.’ I serve because I love Jesus.”

Stewardship calls us to show the same kind of love reflected by Jesus in the Gospel and in the words and actions of Mother Teresa. We, too, are called to find and see Jesus in all we meet, to be willing to humble ourselves if necessary to serve and care for them. There are ways we can do this among the ministries right here in our own faith community.

Dear Faithful Members of St. Boniface Parish, You may recall that we kicked-off our Stewardship Series last fall with a focus on showing our gratitude for God's Abundant Blessings through commitments to Spirituality, Service and Sacrifice. Lent and the upcoming Easter Season provide us with opportunities to reaffirm that Stewardship is our Way of Life, blossoming in the spring and growing throughout the year from the seeds planted during the initial Stewardship Series last fall. During these remaining days of Lenten preparation and in anticipation of the upcoming Easter Season, please reflect upon the commitments you made last fall and, in the words of St. Paul, "stir into flame" these commitments by participating in:

• Prayer groups such as Living the Eucharist, Lectio Divina, Circle of Moms, or two of the new Easter Season opportunities: “Study Series – Priest, Prophet, King by Bishop Robert Barron” and “Month of Guided Prayer”.

• Service opportunities for our Church and community.

• Expanded sacrifice by not only "giving up" something for Lent, but by giving more to those in need through programs such as the CRS' Rice Bowl, St. Vincent de Paul Society and others. To learn more about prayer groups or faith formation programs, please contact Robin Black Rubenstein at 618-656-6450 or via email at [email protected]. To learn more about the St. Vincent de Paul Society and other service opportunities, please contact Deacon Dan or Benna Denue at the parish office (618-656-6450). To make your contributions to the church and church-supported charities even easier, take advantage of online giving through the church website: www.st-boniface.com. Let's make Lent a time of transformation to Stewardship as a Way of Life and the Easter Season a rebirth of our commitments to Spirituality, Service and Sacrifice! Thank you for your participation in our inaugural Stewardship Series and your continued generosity of your time, abilities and resources to our community and St. Boniface Church.
