The Baptism of the Lord + Reflection
Steeple People ~ High school aged students will meet Sunday, January 11 (today), in the Bona Lounge of the Parish Office Building. We will view the movie “40”. “40” is a compelling new documentary that examines the effects of abortion on our nation over the last 40 years since Roe v. Wade. The film showcases interviews with dozens of pro-life leaders and presents abortion as the most important human rights issue of our time. “40” looks at both sides of this heated issue and addresses some the strongest arguments for the pro-choice position. “40” also provides heartfelt testimonies from post abortive women and reports on the youth as the generation that will end abortion.
Financial Peace University ~ The nine week course will begin January 11—March 8 @ 1 PM—2:45 PM. Register for the class and purchase the FPU kit at the parish office. Forms available online at http://st-boniface.com/fpu/.
Koinonia Parish Retreat ~ Those interested in participating in the Koinonia Parish Retreat to be held on the weekend of January 23-25 should contact the parish office to register.
Pre–Cana 2015 ~ St. Boniface will offer a Pre-Cana Day of Reflection for couples who will be married in the up-coming year. The event will take place on Saturday, January 31 in the Oak Room. Couples should contact the Parish Office ASAP. 25 couples is the maximum. There is a $75 fee.
Pre–Cana 2015 Team Meeting ~ The Pre-Cana team will meet on Thursday, January 15 @ 6:30 PM in the Parish Office. Finance Council Meeting ~ The Parish Finance Council will meet on Monday, January 12 @ 6:30 PM in the Parish Office. All those who participated in the feasibility study for a capital campaign are welcome to attend—namely, finance council, pastoral council and pastor’s cabinet. Food Pantry ~ Gary Ladd has reported that nearly 3,500 pounds of food has been collected and donated to the Food Pantry. Bona thanks to Gary for delivering the food and bona thanks to all who donated food for the needy!
The Spirit of God moved and worked in the lives of prophets and saints. But the fullness of God’s Spirit rested upon his son, Jesus. The power and presence of the Holy Spirit was evident in the life of Jesus. When we open our lives to
Jesus, we receive the same Spirit that strengthened and sustained Jesus during his life and ministry.

MINISTRY MINUTES FROM ROBIN BLACK-RUBENSTEIN
Here we are the second weekend of January. I hope that you have entered this new calendar year with hope and peace in your heart. As we enter the heart of winter, we are most likely indoors when we have a choice. For me, winter seems to be a good time for reflection. Although I really enjoy reflective nature walks when the weather is a little warmer, time inside in the winter often leads me to do some interior self-reflection, which most of the time morphs into some changes that I need to make or things I need to do in order to get back on the right path for my life journey. This weekend in our liturgy we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, the event of Jesus’ baptism with water in the Jordan. It is a good time to remember our own identity as Christians, a time to self-reflect about being children of God. Once at a retreat I was leading a discussion and introduced myself as Robin, A child of God. I am not really sure what prompted me to introduce myself that way, other than the Holy Spirit. Another discussion leader asked me why I added that to my introduction of myself. My answer was simple. “Because I am, we all are.” This led me and others in the room to begin to think about our identities as children of God. What does that mean? How do we live differently with that inheritance within our hearts? When we are baptized, we are brought into a spiritual family. We are part of the family of God. In Mark’s Gospel, after Jesus comes out of the water, “A voice came from the heavens, you are my beloved Son: with you I am well pleased.” The Sanctifying Grace received at baptism is from God and helps us to be more like Jesus. As we reflect on the identity given to us at baptism to be a child of God, it is good to reflect and remember, “What does that mean for me?” Can I say that I am a child of God and live it? How will I continue this legacy of Christ’s love on my own life’s journey? It may take a lifetime of winter reflection but we are not alone. Koinonia at St. Boniface- This is it! Registration for the parish retreat will end January 15. If you have been holding back, let go and let the spirit guide you to a weekend of renewed faith in yourself and others through Jesus Christ. Fill out the registration form located in the Lobby of the Church and send it into the office: 110 North Buchanan, Edwardsville, IL 62025 or drop it buy in person. You can also email Robin Black-Rubenstein at [email protected]. You will not regret it. Please do not hesitate to ask questions of local team members: Phil Daniels, Sue Vannelli, Sister Kathleen Ann, Robin Black-Rubenstein or Fr. Jeff. See us at the Ministry Fair.

DEACON DAN’S COLUMN
Congressman Chris Smith is a Pro-life Warrior
This year will mark the 42nd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade and we are still fighting to limit its impact on our society. In its January issue, Columbia, the monthly publication of the Knights of Columbus, published an exclusive interview with a member of the House of Representatives Christopher Smith (R-NJ). Even before he was elected to Congress, Mr. Smith was a pro-life warrior and he has continued the fight during the more than 30 years he has been a Congressman. Columbia asked him to name the key developments in the pro-life movement over the last 40 years and this was his answer.
“At first, we hoped that Roe v. Wade would be overturned in just a few years. Most of us were incredulous that a society could embrace dismembering and chemically poisoning children by calling it a benign act and good for women. The other side has marketed the culture of death effectively, but a lie can only sustain its potency for a limited time. In this case it has been decades, but I believe that the abortion culture’s days are numbered because of the pro-life movement’s persistent, faith and love, even for our most egregious opponents.
Every year, the movement has grown stronger. More young people are involved than ever before, and polls suggest that increasing numbers of young people are pro-life. There has been a sea change. The number of actual abortions has gone down and much of that is tied to the Church’s presence and the many ministries and education efforts. The expansion of pregnancy care centers has been key to this.”
Congressman Smith continues on to describe the importance of our Church’s healing ministries like Project Rachel and our Knights of Columbus Ultrasound Initiative. We need to stay informed of what are the pro-life activities in our area and support them with our actions and our prayers. Please pray for an end to abortions.

A Spirituality of Stewardship
"What does it mean that ‘to whom much is given, much will be required’ (Luke 12:48)?"
Continued from last week:
Jesus continued the parable with a contrast: “Suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows” (Luke 12:44–47). The unfaithful servant mismanages the master’s resources to satiate his own greed, and Jesus warns that judgment is certain for that servant. The Lord then summarizes the point of the parable with these words: “Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more” (verse 48, ESV). A related parable that also deals with stewardship is the Parable of the Talents (or the Parable of the Bags of Gold) in Matthew 25:14–30. It is easy to assume that only wealthy people have been “given much,” but, in truth, we have all been given much (1 Corinthians 4:7). We have been granted the abundant grace of God (Ephesians 1:3–10; 3:16–21; Romans 5:8–11; 8:14–17), the Word of God, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16–21; 16:13; Romans 12:6). “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10). We should also not assume that the less we know about God and His gifts, the less we’ll have to do. As evident in Jesus’ parable, we are held responsible to know our master’s will. God has plainly shown us what He requires (Micah 6:8).

The Big Question - A Film and Study about Forgiveness
This film, and follow up study, explores astonishing acts of forgiveness, courage and will. The film features Desmond Tutu, Sr.; Helen Prejean, Thich Nhat Hahn, and many other spiritual leaders. The follow up study will include film clips from Fr. Robert Barron as well as “The Five Steps to Forgiveness: with Dr. Everett Worthington.” A great pre-Lenten series. Tuesday evenings 6:30-8:00, January 13, 20, and 27. Please contact Robin Black-Rubenstein at the parish office for information or to sign up for the study. All are invited. Five hours of Diocesan catechist credit for personal enrichment is available.
Free Lunch Friday
Friday, January 30, will be our next service day for Free Lunch Friday, which serves the Edwardsville community and is held at Immanuel Methodist Church. If you would like to help with service or donations, please contact Robin B-R at the parish office 656-6450 or [email protected].
