History of the Diocese of Springfield IL
What is now the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois was formerly the Diocese of Quincy, erected July 29, 1853. There were 56 counties in the diocese. Because Quincy was located on the upper western edge of the diocese, Pope Pius XI chose to
transfer the See to Alton, a more central location, on January 9, 1857. With the growing number of Catholics, Pope Leo XIII decided to divide the diocese. On January 9, 1887, he created
the Diocese of Belleville from the Diocese of Alton. On October 26, 1923, the See of Alton was transferred to
Springfield because of its centralized location. Our diocese covers 15,139 square miles in 28 counties.
Tabernacle refurbished and repaired ~ Through a generous gift to the parish, the Tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament Tower will be repaired and refurbished. The mechanisms which open the doors will be repaired. The interior material within the Tabernacle will be replaced with new satin. The exterior of the Tabernacle will be completely updated and refurbished. As you know, the Tabernacle reserves the most treasured gift of our Church—the Blessed Sacrament of Jesus’ Precious Body. The plan is to have the Tabernacle returned to its place of honor by the First Sunday of Advent. In the absence of the Tabernacle, a smaller Tabernacle which is used for Holy Thursday Adoration in the Chapel—formally, the old convent Tabernacle will reserve the Holy Eucharist.

Plan on attending the Ministry Fair this
weekend!
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
When we approach the Lord in prayer, whether it be for help or strength, we should avoid false pretenses. Instead, we should recognize who we are—in our
struggles and achievements—and stand before the Lord in honesty. This posture allows us to recognize our need for God’s Grace and Mercy, to grow in
faith and give a more faithful witness to the Gospel.
Election 2016 ~ The general election on November 8 offers us the opportunity to vote for candidates for U.S. president, Congress, and the state legislature. The Catholic Church is nonpartisan, and does not endorse candidates nor tell parishioners which candidates they should elect. The Church does offer guidance for discernment as parishioners make their decisions on how to vote with a properly formed conscience. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has updated its document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, which may be found at www.usccb.org/ issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/index.cfm. The bishops of Illinois encourage you to carefully review the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching as you consider candidates. More information may be found at www.ilcatholic.org.
STB Youth Ministry Kick Ball Night ~ This Sunday, October 23 @ 6:30 PM—8 PM, youth of the parish (13-17 year olds) should plan on attending youth night in the Acorn Room of the Lower Level of the church. Mr. Jeremy Kovarik, Youth
Minister and assistant Hunter Klette along with dedicated non-intrusive adults prepare a fun evening including a delicious dinner, prayer and fellowship. Parents please encourage your young people to attend and participate!

MINISTRY MINUTES
Features in October on FORMED: The Gospel of Life
Book: The Appalling Strangeness of the Mercy of God
Movie: Love is a Choice
This video documents the heroic life of St. Gianna Molla through interviews with her husband, children, friends, letters and family mementos. St. Gianna, who sacrificed her life to save her unborn baby, was a mother, a medical doctor, a lover of opera, art and culture; one who can speak much to our present day especially when family life is threatened on so many fronts.
Audio: Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was one of the best-loved and most influential preachers of the 20th century and author of over 90 books. He reached nearly 30 million people through his weekly program, Life is Worth Living, and his Cause for Canonization was officially opened in 2002. He explains the Church’s teaching on life from a philosophical and historical perspective.
Features in November on FORMED: Advent
The tradition of the Advent Wreath is meant to prepare our hearts for Christmas. It represents the long time when people lived in spiritual darkness, waiting for the coming of the Messiah, the Light of the world. As a new candle is lit each week, the light grows, overcoming the darkness. Of course, the symbolism doesn’t end there as Jesus calls us to be the “light of the world” [Matthew 5:14]. FORMED offers many resources this month, including a 4-week study on Advent, for your parishioners to prepare their hearts for Christmas and be the light of the world.
A Short Conversation with Father Paul Habing for the Occasion of Mission Sunday
Father Paul, you have been a priest for thirty-six years and you were a priest for seven years before you first went to be a missionary in Peru. What called you to the missions?
I was called to serve God’s poor. I was deeply influenced in that call by my parents who were Third Order Franciscans and lived out their Franciscan values and by my cousin who was a Franciscan Priest.
After five years in Peru, you returned and served as a Parochial Vicar at St. Anthony of Padua in Effingham IL. Then you returned to Peru for sixteen years. What called you back to the missions?
I was invited to return to the Peruvian Diocese of Ayavari by the Bishop of that Diocese. I was influenced to go to Ayavari in a special way by Sister Raquel, a Salesian nun who ran an orphanage and was seeking help for the Quechua speaking indigenous people of that region. Most of that region is arid and in a very high elevation. As in all mission work you receive more than you give.
Do only certain persons have a calling to be missionary?
Deacon, that is a rhetorical question! Remember the words of Vicki Compton, the Director of our Diocesan Mission Office – “Some witness by going; some witness by giving and all witness by praying.”
Please pray for all missionaries and support their work.
~ Deacon Dan

Walk-Fit
Walk-Fit continues to meet Monday mornings from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. at the Watershed Nature Center parking lot until further notice. We will begin with a short prayer/reflection before our outdoor walk. Inclement weather cancels the walk.
The Lord Hears the Cry of the Poor
The parable from Luke’s Gospel was a reversal and a shock to Jesus’ audience. If we do not approach God, others and our lives with a humble heart, we become blind to the needs of others. Bishop Robert Barron uses St. Paul as an example for us, “Paul advises us to be Christ-like in our humility: encouraging, loving, compassionate, merciful, full of the Spirit and self-emptying… when we free ourselves from the clutches of Pride, and we find ultimate joy, happiness and peace, we begin to truly live for God and for others.” The Catholic Social Doctrine tells us, “God who is the source of every gift cannot be separated from the manifestation of His love and preference for the poor and humble, that love which, is celebrated in the Magnificat, is later expressed in the words of Jesus.” As we attempt to live out Jesus’ words and actions in our lives, we know that God hears the cry of the poor, the materially as well as the spiritually, and pray that God use our lives as a means to bring about His will. ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein

Stewardship
The First Reading today comes to us from the Book of Sirach. As is the norm with Sirach, he gets right to the point in the first verse of the reading: “The Lord God is a God of justice who knows no favorites.”
We are all familiar with the idea of favorites: we may have a favorite color, a favorite food, or a favorite flower. However, it is comforting to know that God has no favorites. We are all His children. This fact is reinforced over and over in the Bible.
Consider the following: “For there is no favoritism with God.” (Romans 2:11); “For the Lord your God is the God of gods…who favors no person and accepts no bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17); St Peter opened a sermon with these words: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality.” (Acts 10:34). We may sense that God does not have favorites, that He loves us all equally, that we all can be saved, but we also need to note that God cannot be bribed or bought.
What God expects of us is for us to be disciples, to be good stewards, to live righteous lives. If we sincerely do that, if we pursue holiness as we are called to do, then truly as the Lord tells us in today’s Gospel, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” God is good — to all of us.

Ministry Spotlight
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Many of our parishioners contribute money to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, but how many know what we do? The following highlights a recent case handled by two of our volunteers.
We recently visited with a woman who is the mother of three children, the youngest of which came during a difficult delivery. This meant she was out of work for an extended period of time, with no income coming in and was behind on her rent. The father of her children is not involved with their life and does not pay child support. She is a hard working person who works long hours as a waitress. She needed help with her rent and our volunteers visited with her in her home, spoke to her landlord, confirmed her payment status and sent a payment directly to the landlord to keep her family in their home for another month.
In the last month, St Vincent de Paul has helped 22 families with similar stories by paying $2,750 to various area landlords and $5,760 to utility companies.
We are able to do this because of the generosity of the members of this parish and we thank you for your help. If you know someone who could use our assistance, please have them call 1-800-775-0712 ext. 7777. If you’d like to join our group, we are always looking for new members.
World Mission Sunday
Today is World Mission Sunday! In announcing his decision to declare a Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said, “Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy. “Supporting the young churches throughout the world with your prayers and generous gifts is indeed a merciful witness of this mission. The collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of the priest, religious and lay leaders who serve those on the margins and in most need.” Extend your merciful witness to the whole world through your gift in today’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith!
