No wonder Peter rebukes Jesus! Jesus began to show his disciples what faithful discipleship demands: denying self, losing self, letting self die. Jesus teaches his disciples to let go of self so that a new self can be given. What we relinquish is ourselves as we are now; what we are given is a new self born from identifying completely with Jesus. It takes a lifetime of discipleship to turn from wanting to rebuke Jesus’ way of living through the cross to
embrace it. It takes a lifetime of discipleship to let Jesus transform our life into His life.

Feed Your Body, Feed Your Soul
One Saturday each month, enjoy a delicious brunch and then join with fellow parishoners in viewing a DVD lecture on “The Jesus Of Scripture” presented by Rev. Don Senior, C.P. S.T.D. In one of Fr. Senior’s lectures, he speaks of the great significance of meals as part of Jesus’ ministry, e.g. the feeding of the multitudes; dinner with Lazarus, Martha and Mary; having dinner at the home of Zacheuus; and of course the Last Supper, just to name a few. Following the viewing of the DVD lecture, there will be opportunity for discussion and sharing. The structure of the morning will be brunch at 10:00 a.m. followed by the DVD lecture and then sharing and discussion with the goal of being finished before noon. Each lecture is self-contained, you do not have to be able to attend every lecture to gain insights on the Jesus of Scripture. There will be a suggested donation of $5 to help defray the expenses of the brunch, which will be substantial and yummy. We do ask that you pre-register. Our first session will be on Saturday, September 20. Please call the Parish Office at 656-6450 or Sr. Kathleen Ann at the Convent 655-9524, to assure your place at the Saturday brunch.

MINISTRY MINUTES FROM ROBIN BLACK-RUBENSTEIN
What does it mean for us when Jesus says, “Whoever loses his (or her) life for my sake will find it”? To lose our life means self-sacrifice. Therefore, self-sacrifice and rising to live with God is the paschal mystery. Living the paschal mystery is something we can practice in our daily lives. The paschal mystery is often being willing to let things happen and be open to the mystery of the new things God has in store for us. Sometimes it simply means that we set down our lists, our plans, and allow ourselves to be reformed and transformed by God, and to trust God’s love. It is easy to get bogged down in daily life and lose our sense of wonder. When we lose that sense of wonder we can lose the awareness of the greatness of our loving God. Some days we forget to see the world through the eyes of “God’s children”, and spend our days seeing the world through eyes of fear. We live in an imperfect world, but that doesn’t mean that we are not given a glimpse of the sacred within it. God’s world is full of the glory of God, the amazing beauty of God’s creatures, and the mystery of how grace works within human hearts. We struggle and we rejoice in our new rising. This is living the paschal mystery.
A spiritual practice that can help renew a contemplative spirit in our lives is the practice of Lectio Divina. It is a traditional Benedictine practice of scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer. Lectio Divina is used in many different settings and often can be a catalyst for opening up to God’s mysteries. Lectio Divina will be offered here at St. Boniface as a group practice on the following dates from 9:30-11:45 a.m. Friday, September 5 & 19, October 24 & 31, and November 7 & 21. This will be led by parishioners Sue Deakos and Laura Jones. Anyone can attend. As you hear and contemplate the readings for the upcoming Sunday, you may find a new awareness rising up in you when you hear them again at Mass. Contact Robin B-R at the parish office with any questions.
DEACON DAN’S COLUMN
St. Boniface RCIA-RCIC
If you or someone you know is interested in knowing more about the Catholic faith or becoming a member of the Catholic faith, we invite you to RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). RCIA is a 7-month process of getting to know about/becoming a member of the Catholic faith. We meet most Monday evenings 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. from September until the Easter Vigil. Older children, ages 6-13, who wish to be baptized into the Catholic faith have their own sessions on Monday evenings at the same time as RCIA. This program for the children is called RCIC (the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children). If you wish more information, contact the Parish Office at 656-6450 or Sister Kathleen Ann at [email protected].
RCIA/RCIC begins September 8.
A Few Highlights from Our Bishops Labor Day Statement
Each year the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issues a Labor Day Statement. This year the statement was written by Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami. Archbishop Wenski presented some of the social teaching of the Church about the dignity of labor and its “importance to human flourishing”. He drew from the writings of our most recent saints and said that St. John Paul II called work “probably the essential key to the whole social question” (Laborem Exercens, No. 3) and that St. John XXIII stressed that workers are “entitled to a wage that is determined in accordance with the precepts of justice” (Pacem in Terris No. 20). He quoted Pope Francis as saying that work “is fundamental to the dignity of a person.”
In his review of the year, the Archbishop could find some progress being made in the jobs market, but not enough. The Archbishop presented some general statistics about the overall condition of unemployment in our country and then turned, more specifically, to the plight of our young adults. Here is what he writes –
“More concerning is that our young adults have borne the brunt of this crisis of unemployment and underemployment. The unemployment rate for young adults in America, at over 13 percent, is more than double the national average (6.2 percent). For those fortunate to have jobs, many pay poorly. Greater numbers of debt-strapped college graduates move back in with their parents, while high school graduates and others may have less debt but very few decent job opportunities. Pope Francis has reserved some of his strongest language for speaking about young adult unemployment, calling it “evil”, an “atrocity” and emblematic of the “throwaway culture.”
Archbishop Wenski goes on to say that “Meaningful and decent work is vital if young adults hope to form healthy and stable families”. He sees work as making it possible to fund a family since families require the means of subsistence that is acquired through work. The Archbishop draws a relationship between declining marriage and birth rates and says while the lack of quality employment is only one of the factors, it is an important factor.
He closes his statement by saying that supporting policies and institutions that create decent jobs, pay just wages, and support family stability will also honor the dignity of workers. He calls for raising the minimum wage, for better workforce training programs, and smarter regulation of businesses so that there are less unintended consequences. He asks us to follow our Pope in rejecting an economy of exclusion and
embracing a culture of encounter. ~Deacon Dan

Commitment
Ultimate Accountability
When we fail to meet our responsibilities to each other, Christ has told us what to expect on that day of final accountability, the Last Judgment:
Then he will say to those at his left hand, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels, for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.” (Matt. 25:41-43)
As to how we serve God through serving man, He said:
Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?” And the King will answer them: “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.” (Matt. 25:37-40)
Misdirected action (sins of commission) or lack of action (sins of omission) likewise end in a result. Again, the result is determined by the nature of the action. Even though the action was not committed according to God’s plan, the result will still be judged according to God’s plan. Taken from a series of articles from the International Catholic Stewardship Council entitled, “The Life of the Christian Steward”.
