Counsel the doubtful—Evangelize

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel offers us some important reminders about forgiveness. We are to forgive others as God has forgiven us. God’s mercy is boundless and

He will forgive us for any sin if we place our trust in Him, love Him and humbly ask for forgiveness. Upon being forgiven, we are to generously love and forgive others.

Saint Boniface—Our Patron Celebration ~ This weekend we honor our patron at all Masses with a reflection of his life and intercessory prayer for his blessing through Jesus our Lord. Fellowship follows in the Main Lobby and Plaza Lobby after Masses. Plan on enjoying food and drink with fellow parishioners and parish guests. Thanks to the Stewardship Council for hosting fellowship this weekend.

Sunday Evening July 3 ~ Please note there will be NO 5:15 PM Evening Mass on Sunday, July 3.

High School Graduates Gift ~ Congratulations to all Saint Boniface High School graduates. May God bless you with much happiness and success! I am happy to present to ALL our high school graduates a complimentary (free) copy of Catholicism for Dummies. You can get your copy from myself before or after Mass over the next several weeks!

School Registration ~ Saint Boniface Parish School and Pre– School and Father McGivney Catholic High School continue to accept students for the 2016-17 school year. Please contact Sister Anna Flanigan, OSF at the Saint Boniface School Office @ 618.656.6917 and Mr. Mike Scholz at the FMCHS Office @ 618.855.9010.

Summertime Mass Attire ~ Summer might be a good occasion for casual attire, but it would be a good rule of thumb to keep in mind that beach attire is not church attire. Common sense rules of modesty apply to our attire at Mass.

Welcome Summer Seminarians

Saint Boniface will host Seminarians Mark Tracy

and Rob Johnson

Mark is no stranger to

STB. Mark spent the 2014 summer with us. Mark is from Mt. Sterling IL and attends St. Meinrad

Seminary. Rob Johnson is from Illiopolis IL and attends Mundelein Seminary. Both men will begin Third Theology in the fall. During this summer, both

will be participating in CPE (Clinical Pastoral Experience) at Barnes and SLU Hospitals. Basically, they will be eating and sleeping here during the

summer!

TEC is having their next weekend from June 25-27, 2016. TEC is essentially Koinonia for teens (ages 16-21). We will discover the Paschal Mystery by dying, rising and going forth with Jesus. Who are the young people you know who would benefit from the same experience? The application can be found online at http://www.tecofspringfield.com/ and then e-mailed to [email protected]. The cost of the weekend is $100 and will be held at the Latter Rain Retreat Center in Litchfield, IL. You may also contact Robin B-R at the parish office for more information.

Called and Sent July 10-15, 2016

‘Called and Sent’ is a program that offers high school students the opportunity to be formed as the next generation of disciples in the Church. The program will provide an environment in which young people will be able to encounter Christ in a personal and powerful way. They will come to understand who Christ is, and in coming to know Him, they will come to better understand who they are in relationship to Him. This then leads to a greater awareness of how they are called to live their faith intentionally as disciples.

Go to http://dio.org/vocations/called-and-sent.html to view their brochure and to register.

MINISTRY MINUTES

The Spiritual Works of Mercy – Admonishing the Sinner

If the best proof of a successful marriage is that, with each other’s help, we will share eternity together, if the best proof of successful parenting is that someday our children join us in heaven and if we have loved our friends well enough to join them in eternity we really will have understood the primary purpose of our lives here on earth. When you approach an act of admonishing the sinner from living out our primary purpose of assisting our loved ones to achieve salvation, then you can see that this is a very important act of love

We need to clearly understand and strongly believe which behaviors lead us toward our Lord and which behaviors lead us away from our Lord. We need to be ready and willing to speak out about any behaviors that lead our family, our friends, our colleagues and ourselves away from our Lord. However, to do so requires sensitivity and humility on our part.

Choosing the correct time and place and accepting that you will most likely be strongly rebuffed are important parts of admonishing the sinner. When you are about to admonish another person all of the clichés are in play – Love the sinner but hate the sin, remove the wooden beam from your eye first, and keep your eye on the prize! Because in this instance the prize is a loved one’s salvation.

Asking someone to change their behavior to save their soul really is the highest form of love. It requires us to be very prudent in choosing the time and place to approach that person, very patient in facing the resistance to our efforts and very prayerful in asking the Holy Spirit to guide our intentions and our actions. ~ Deacon Dan

Reflection—Robin Black-Rubenstein

This week’s readings on the Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time have forgiveness as the overarching theme. The woman who touches Jesus in the Gospel has an enormous amount of faith that Jesus will forgive her. She has the courage to enter the house of a Pharisee and to ignore all protocol of the time because she has faith that Jesus will forgive her and transform her, the Pharisee on the other hand thinks that God’s mercy is scarce and only for the deserving.

When we have faith that we are forgiven, it opens up the window and shines light into our hearts, and helps us to be able to forgive others. Author Lynne Twist wrote, “For me, and for many of us, our first waking thought of the day is “I didn’t get enough sleep.” The next one is “I don’t have enough time.” Whether true or not, that thought of not enough occurs to us automatically before we even think to question or examine it…Before we even sit up in bed, before our feet touch the floor, we’re already inadequate, behind, losing, lacking something. And by the time we go to bed at night, our minds are racing with a litany of what we didn’t get, or didn’t get done, that day… This internal condition of scarcity, this mind-set creates our jealousies, greed, and prejudice, and our arguments with life.” Like the Pharisee who judged the woman’s actions, when we feel like there is not enough mercy, we may judge who is deserving of mercy and who is not. When we can accept that God’s Mercy (Love) is endless, we know that God can transform our lives like David, Paul and the woman; our hearts are transformed, so that we wake up every morning knowing that we are enough because God’s love is omnipotent and we can rejoice in forgiveness for others.

Diocesan Family Fun Camp June 30-July 2

Villa Maria Retreat Center, Lake Springfield

The Diocesan Family Fun Camp is a faith-filled affordable gathering for families of all ages and sizes. Held at the Villa Maria Catholic Life Retreat Center, this is the second year that we have gathered families so that they can truly relax, spend time in prayer – as individuals, married couples and as a whole family – and pause from the distractions of the modern world while enjoying true recreation. Different tracks will keep parents, teens and children engaged in different ways throughout the days. Activities currently planned are: nightly bonfires, a party barge boat excursion, hikes, games, movies and more. You will leave inspired, renewed and motivated to do wonderful things for God - precisely as a family! We are excited to have you join us. Contact www.dio.org/familylife/camp or call 217-321-1139. Scholarships are available to help with costs.

Please notify the parish office if you have a change of address or are leaving the parish.

St. Boniface Choir on Catholic Radio

About 2 months ago, St. Boniface Choir recorded a number of songs for Catholic Radio, AM 1080. These songs will be played throughout the year in-between programming. Following are the dates and times that you can tune in to hear our parish choir singing some of our favorite songs in the next few weeks:

Catholic Radio - AM 1080

Our God is Here - June 13 @ 5:56 p.m.

Sow the Word - June 15 @ 9:58 a.m.

God Will Make a Way - June 17 @ 2:55 p.m.

Lamb of God - June 21 @ 3:05 p.m.

Over this past spring break, I had the opportunity to travel to Matanzas, Cuba with seventeen other Boiler Catholics from the St. Thomas Aquinas Center at Purdue University. This mission trip centered around bringing aid to the deprived populations that live in Cuba while also being the hands and feet of Christ for them.

Our mission work mainly centered around working with local farmers on agricultural projects and meeting some of the underprivileged populations found in Matanzas. We were able to plant dozens of coffee and banana trees and paint the facilities of a local farmer. Our group also met with many disabled children and their families. The conditions that these families have to live in were very harsh and eye-opening. Even though these families lived in some of the harshest conditions I had ever seen, their faith in Jesus Christ was inspiring. They were never bitter or depressed about their situation, but they were just very grateful to God for giving them their children and a chance to live. We were also able to meet with the children at a local orphanage

while we were there. We interacted with the children there daily, and we formed a strong bond with them through ice cream outings and a dance lesson/contest at our house.

Our priest, Father Patrick Baikauskas OP, told us at the beginning of the trip that the Holy Spirit called each of us to go on this mission trip for a reason. The general consensus from our group after we had returned home was that we were called to this ministry in order to build bridges in Cuba. The Catholic Church had been suppressed in Cuba by the communist regime for over fifty years. Through our work we were able to be the hands and feet of Christ for a population that had not seen Christianity in quite some time. The faith of young people was inspiring for the Cuban people, but their faith inspired us as well. A Carmelite priest said that our trip to Cuba would be more influential than President Obama’s. He said our presence there and the way we are able to display our faith is more important for an emerging nation than any politician’s visit ever could be. His words and the faith of the people in Cuba will always stick with me. This experience allowed me to see that God’s love truly is universal.

Stewardship

At the close of today’s Gospel reading from Luke is a telling statement. After describing Jesus’ journey with His Apostles and others, including some women, one of whom was Mary Magdalene, the women are portrayed as “many…who provided for them out of their resources.” This is an indication that Jesus and His Apostles were reliant upon others for support and sustenance.

This is Jesus, who could have easily provided for Himself in many ways because of His Divinity. However, He chose to need others to survive and to accomplish what He needed to accomplish. Sometimes we may feel independent, and we may even suffer from the desire to not be dependent upon anyone. Nevertheless, we are. We need other people; we need their prayers; we need their love. The Lord understood this, and He tries to make it clear to us that we are no different. First of all, we are dependent upon the Lord. We need His love, His support, and His strength. We also need others. That is in part what stewardship is all about. We share our gifts, and when they are combined with the gifts of others, our community, our church, our parish is so much more effective. We need one another; however, we must also remember that they need us as well.

Robin Hake, Business Manager [email protected]

St. Boniface appreciates your gifts to the church. We would like to suggest some ways to make your gift giving easier:

• Easy and convenient! EFT is an automatic withdrawal from your checking account on a monthly basis. There are no service fee charges! All we need is a copy of your cancelled check and your authorization form for an amount to be given automatically. Once a month giving is as easy as paying your light bill!

• Traditional weekly contribution envelopes provided by the church. This allows us to give you credit for the gifts you give to the church. We have no way to credit anonymous gifts of cash.

• Are you visiting or have not yet registered? We will send you a thank you letter for your contribution (if you give by check) that can be used for tax purposes. Cash donations are more difficult unless a name and address are included with the gift.

All gifts to St. Boniface are tax deductible!

Peter’s Pence Second Collection

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has called each of us to be a witness of charity. He encourages us to "open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help!" (Misericordiae Vultus [MV], no. 15).

The Peter's Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters who are suffering as a result of war, oppression, natural disaster and disease. Envelopes will be available in the bulletin the weekend of June 25/26.
