Dear People of God,

Memories. Many marvelous memories of this fantastic Faith Community are flooding my mind and heart. Where does one begin to reflect upon and capture how you have so profoundly touched my life these last eighteen years? Where does one start?

Words cannot express my deepest gratitude for how this terrific community embraced, loved and accepted me upon my arrival on June 30, 1992. I still vividly recall preaching at all the Masses that July 4th weekend and being overwhelmed by your immediate support and warm welcome. It has truly been a wonderful ride, at times like a roller coaster it has been a ride of ups and downs, twists and turns!

So many people have influenced my life through the years that it would be impossible to single out every individual. But my family, and my Mother in particular, deserve a special mention, for they have been a source of love and strength over the years. They have shaped my faith which brings me to this joyous day. Words also cannot adequately express my deepest thanks and gratitude to our previous Pastor, Father Leo Mahon, the entire Staff, School Faculty, and our Faith Community at St. Mary of the Woods.

As I leave you as your Pastor, what is my one wish for you. The following story captures it best…. Keep reading….

I Wish You Enough!

Recently, I overheard a Father and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure.

Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the Father said, “I love you, and I wish you enough.”

The daughter replied, “Dad, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Dad.”

They kissed and the daughter left. The Father walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, “Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing change means things would never be the same?”

“Yes, I have,” I replied.

“When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, ‘I wish you enough.’ May I ask what that means?”

He began to smile. “That’s a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.” He paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and he smiled even more. “When we said, ‘I wish you enough,’ we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.” Then turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory.

“I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.

I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.

I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.

NOON Nursery June 13, 2010 There will be babysitting for children 4 and under during Father Greg’s last Mass this Sunday at noon. It will be in the Gym Meeting Room.

PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES IN CHURCH

Out of respect for our Liturgy and out of courtesy for your fellow parishioners, we ask that you PLEASE turn off your cell phones and pagers before you enter the church. Thank you!

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye….”

He then began to cry and walked away. And may I add, I wish you enough faith and trust in God to lighten your moments of doubt and sadness.

I wish you enough love to ease your times of rejection and hurts.

And most importantly, I wish you enough courage to carry on as the Body of Christ for St. Mary of the Woods is the best Faith Community in the Archdiocese of Chicago!

And I leave you with these words from the beautiful song:

Companions on the Journey

We are companions on the journey, breaking bread and sharing life; and in the love we bear is the hope we share for we believe in the love of our God, we believe in the love of our God. We have been gifted with each other, and we are called by the Word of the Lord: to act with justice, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with our God, to walk humbly with our God.

The St. Mary of the Woods Faith Community will always have a special place in my heart and will forever be in my prayers. I will never forget you and I wish you “Enough.”

God’s Blessings always! With all my love, Father Greg

ANKUR KALA Annie Joseph, founder of Ankur Kala, a women’s Center in Calcutta, will be here next Sunday to sell her handicrafts. The sale of these items will support the fine work done to sow seeds of hope and dignity among many destitute women living in the slums of country side of West Bengal.

MADONNA HOUSE

Catholic Charities opened a freshly renovated shelter for women and their children in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. The shelter, located near Wrigley Field, has a confidential address because it shares a campus with a domestic violence program. Currently, the children residing at Madonna House could use some outdoor play things. If you have some gently used toys that you can spare, please call Marcy in the Rectory at 773-763-0206. Thank you!

Liturgical Bits & Bytes Communion Rite With the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer, we begin another part of the “Liturgy of the Eucharist” and that is the Communion Rite. So far we have experienced the taking of the bread (the Presentation of the Gifts) and the blessing of it (the Eucharistic Prayer). Now we prepare to break and share. But first we join together in the words that Jesus himself gave us. In many parishes people hold hands during the Lord's Prayer. This is not a gesture dictated by the liturgy, but one which has arisen from the peo-ple themselves and their feeling that this ex-presses the unity indicated by the words "Our Father." Many parishes invite the people to use the same gesture as the presider, with hands upraised and open, about shoulder height. This is called the "orans" or "prayer" position. A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM FATHER KURT

Dear Friends A few weeks ago, I shared some homily reflections with all of you about my personal struggle with the spirit of quiet and silence in my life. After my homily that weekend many of you shared with me your own challenges with so many distractions in your life. Some even asked if I would offer one more opportunity for a Silent Directed Retreat on the beautiful grounds of Mundelein before I leave St. Mary of the Woods for my new parish, and, I heard you! So, please hear this as an invitation from my heart to yours. Would you consider coming away with me for a weekend to rest with God? Together, in the silence of a directed retreat, we might be surprised what we “hear.” The retreat is based on the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola who believed we can only hear the true voice of God when we get away from the many distractions and the noise of our lives that pull our hearts in so many directions. I have reserved some retreat rooms at the Cardinal Stritch Retreat House, a secluded space on the campus of the Seminary in Mundelein. The dates are Friday evening June 25th beginning with a light supper at 7PM until Sunday afternoon June 27th about 1:30pm. God will be the true “Director” of this type of retreat. I will be available to focus the retreat , suggest ways for us to remain open and committed to the silence, celebrate the Eucharist, and to have private confidential conversations for any who wish. The cost of the retreat will be $150. This includes all of our meals and the room. The spirit of the retreat will be silence, including the meals, to help us truly hear God’s voice in our lives. Even in the silence, I have discovered both as a retreatant and as a Director, that a bonding happens for those on the retreat. If funds are a concern, we will do our best to offer partial and full scholarships. If you are interested in this experience, I invite you to talk to others who have been on this type of retreat with me from our community before. Feel free to give me a call at the rectory—1-773-763-0206—so I may respond to any questions or concerns you might have. Finally, the Retreat House Staff asks that I give a final list of retreatants to them one week prior to the start of the retreat. They want to make sure we are welcomed and have the proper accommodations.

Peace, Father Kurt

Today’s Alms Collection is for

Maryville Crisis Nursery

PLEASE REMEMBER ST. MARY OF THE WOODS WHEN MAKING OUT YOUR WILL.

Dear Friends in Christ, On the weekend of June 19-20, 2010, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. For many years now, we have relied on our retired priests to celebrate Mass and the sacra-ments in hundreds of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Without their dedicated service, many parishes would need to reduce the number of Masses celebrated each weekend. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of parishes and others fill in to allow pastors some needed time off. Our senior priests do this willingly as a continuation of the many years that they have faithfully served our Church. Please join me in offering our retired priests words of appreciation and gratitude for their many years of priestly ministry. The Priests’ Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. This year, we have seen the cost of healthcare, prescription drugs, and nursing home care increase. In addition, the priests’ pension fund remains seriously impacted by the eco-nomic downturn. This special collection will help us to continue to support our retired priests. You may be aware that the December collection for retired men and women Religious is desig-nated to provide only for those in Religious Orders. Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from this collection. As the “Year for Priests” draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired priests for their exemplary ministry. We are blessed to have more than one hun-dred retired priests over eighty years of age, which means that each one has served for more than fifty-five years. May their spirit continue to enliven our Church! I am thankful to all of you for your remarkable generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat your kindness this year. Your donations and your prayers are a great affirmation of our retired priests. Please pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE TO OUR DEPARTING PASTOR

The SMOW Racial & Social Justice Ministry is recognizing Fr. Greg Sakowicz for his commitment and sponsorship of this ministry’s work over the past eight years. Fr. Greg has helped the ministry place a spotlight on Catholic Social Teaching, Cardinal George’s pastoral letter on racism – Dwell in my Love, Justice for Immigrants, Fair Trade, among other initiatives. We also appreciate the visible support for and active participation in our many events over the years, which range from guest speakers and homilists, films, concerts, workshops, plays, storytelling performances, prayer services, book signings, and more. Fr. Greg, we will miss you but will never forget your advocacy for justice. Thank you!

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Your loved one has died, your life has changed, and it HURTS!!! You may wonder if you will ever feel good again. Can your life ever have meaning and purpose again? You will never be the same person you were before your loved one died, but sometime in the near future, you will be able to resume a fulfilling life. If you wonder how, please come to the Bereavement Support meeting on Saturday, June 19th, at 8:30 A.M. in Jubilee House. You will have the opportunity to be with others who are also facing these difficult moments in their lives. For more information, please contact Tom Reagan at (847)824-9926.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP Over the past five years I have been humbled to serve among you. I am amazed at the number of you who have assumed the role of caregiver for significant others in your life. In my opinion, you are truly unsung heroes. But, where do you get support? When you are at a low point, where do you turn for someone to simply listen to you and understand? I have started a support group for caregivers here at St. Mary of the Woods that, hopefully, will continue after I move on. Please join us for a gathering at the Parish Center, (formerly the Convent), on Thursday, June 17th. We will begin with prayer at 6:45pm for those of you who would like to join us. Soup, bread and refreshments will be served. The sharing part of the meeting will begin at 7:00pm. We will end by 8:30pm. If any questions, please call Brian Bullock at 773-372-3057.

Peace and all God’s blessings, Father Kurt and Brian Bullock

On behalf of our parent-child volunteer group, Kids-Parents Affecting Communities Together (K-PACT) and Providence Rubingisa, founder of Stuff for the Poor, THANK YOU!! Because of your help, we collected over 900 pairs of shoes, far exceeding our goal of 500. St. Mary of the Woods Faith Community was responsible for over half of these donations with 459 pairs of shoes!! Through your generosity, we are able to fund one year’s education for 2.5 AIDS orphans in the village of Mbwewe, Tanzania, who would otherwise have no such opportunity. We look forward to sharing pictures and information from the children we supported. How wonderful that, with a few pairs of used shoes, we can affect the future lives of these children! THANK YOU!! Today the prevalent efficiency-based mentality often tends to marginalize people, considering them a burden and a problem for society. Those who have a sense of human dignity, know instead that they must be respected and supported while they face the difficulties and suffering associated with the condition of their health. ... As well as the indispensable clinical treatment, it is necessary to offer the sick practical gestures of love, closeness and Christian solidarity in response to their need for understanding, comfort and constant encouragement. ~Pope Benedict XVI, Address at Sacro Cuore Hospice, Dec. 13, 2009; USCCB Word of Life, May 2010

Fair Trade Coffee

Saint Mary of the Woods Racial and Social Justice Ministry will be selling fair trade coffee and tea next weekend, June 19/20th, after all the Masses. The coffee that you will purchase is part of Equal Exchange’s interfaith program. This is a network of thousands of faith communities working to create a greener and more just food system. Since 1986 Equal Exchange, a worker-owned co-operative, has worked with small farmer co-operatives in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the U.S. building just trading relationships based on trust, fair prices, affordable credit, and environmental responsibility. People of the participating faith communities are striving to live out their values through their consumer choices, and farming communities are providing for their families, greening our planet and building a better future.
