Serving Breakfast Lunch Dinner To my Spencerport friends, Thank you for your many kindnesses to me. Since March of 2020 when the seminary sent us all home on account of the pandemic, St. Johns has been so good to endorse your pastors invitation with such a warm welcome to your community. Outside of my time back in seminary or otherwise assigned by the diocese, it has been a pleasure to call Spencerport home.Bishop Matano ordained me a priest on June 5. I owe you my thanks as well for your kind ordination gifts to me. The money so generously given by the parish was used to give me a travel Mass kit (which includes most of the hardware necessary to say Holy Mass anywhere in a small package) and also a small reception on the day of my ordination. Thank you! May God reward your generosity. I cannot think of a better way to have spent my first week as a Priest of Jesus Christ than to do the work of a parish priest. It has been an honor to serve here in the parish while Fr. Peter makes a spiritual retreat. Let us remember him in our prayers as he completes his time with the Lord, visits family, and returns to the parish on Wednesday. Soon I will start my first priestly assignment in Tioga County, Fr. Peter will move on to his new assignment in the City of Rochester, and Fr. Justin Miller will be your new parish administrator. The three of us share something important in common. We share the priesthood of Jesus Christ. The particular priest is not so important as the fact you have one. The priesthood is a chosen instrument of Christ. The priest lends his mouth (and his entire person) to Christ. The priest becomes another Christ. The priest speaks Christs words as his own: This is my body.” “This is my blood.” “I absolve you.I baptize you.The particular priest is a means, not the end. The end of the priesthood is communion, getting people to heaven. The particular means to that end, the particular priest, is replaceable. Because each priest is conformed to Christ, and it is only through Christ that the priest can act as Gods instrument. Think of the priest like the bread or the wine, that cease to be bread and wine that the Body and Blood of Christ might instead become physically present at the Mass. The priest cannot fully yield in the same way to the presence of Christ within him, but the priest can make every effort to decrease so that Christ may increase: increase in the priest himself; increase in you. I encourage you to make that your prayer for every priest in your life. May God bless you. Let us continue to pray for each other. Fr.
