At the conclusion of last Sunday’s Gospel, we heard of the rapid expansion of Jesus’ reputation based on his healing of the man with an unclean spirit. Today’s Gospel is another passage about healing which

begins with the individual healing of Simon’s mother-in-law and then narrates the healing of many in the entire town. After doing this work, Jesus prays alone in a deserted place, yet Simon and the others follow him, telling him that everyone is looking for him. Jesus knows he must continue to preach and heal, and so

he goes forth from his short-lived place of solitude.

MINISTRY MINUTES

Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein

Are you ready for the big question? It is the time of year that people, especially Catholics, are asked “What are you giving up for Lent?“ For Catholics the question is sometimes a conversation starter with other Catholics, a little like asking which Mass do you go to or what pew do you sit in? In recent years the church has put a greater emphasis on doing something for Lent rather than simply giving up something for Lent. In the act of doing something for Lent we are often giving up time, talent, or even money. Not that giving up chocolate isn’t a sacrifice, but when we offer up our gifts outside of ourselves, we are not only able to encounter Jesus within but with others in community too. In the Gospel reading from Mark for today, Jesus cured the sick, drove out demons, and then went off to a deserted place where he prayed. Jesus’ example of reaching out to others and being in relationship with them as well as a personal relationship in prayer with the Father can help us plan our six weeks of Lenten renewal. Jesus desires that we encounter Him in our word and action, which includes our word and actions with each other.

Living the Eucharist -Lenten Scripture Study/ Spiritual Renewal

Last weekend was sign-up weekend for Living the Eucharist- small group study. It is not too late to sign up. You can sign-up by contacting Robin Black-Rubenstein at the parish office this week or email [email protected]. The list of groups that are still open to join are on the bulletin board in the parish lobby, or on the sign-up table at the back of the church.

Ten Days until the Beginning of Lent

This column is being written for Sunday February 8, 2015. That Sunday is only ten days from Ash Wednesday. It’s a good time to at least think about the why of Lent along with what your Lenten practices will be.

Probably a good place to start thinking about Lent is to recall why we even have Lent. We have Lent in order to prepare to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord from the dead. We take forty days to do this because forty days was how long our Lord fasted in the desert before the start of his public ministry and so we have a guideline for how long Lent should be. Why do we choose to do extra prayer, some fasting and abstinence, and increased alms giving as our Lenten practices? We do these three things because all three were named as ways to grow closer to God in our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount as reported in the Gospel of Matthew that is read on Ash Wednesday.

Lent is both a personal and a communal journey. It is personal in that each of us make the choice about what our Lenten practices will be and how those practices will draw us closer to God. It is communal because all of us are observing Lent at the same time. If it is personal then why does our Church set rules for fasting and abstinence? Every organization has “membership rules” and our Church is no different except that the rules are so minimal. For Lent the required fasting is only on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (with many exceptions) and abstaining from meat is on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. These regulations will be posted in a later bulletin along with the specific exceptions.

Our present time should be spent in deciding about the choices we will make for our individual Lenten journey. We can review what we did last Lent and how well that worked. We can begin to identify practices we might want to try for this coming Lent. In some ways it can be like packing our suitcase to be ready for the Lenten journey. My personal preparation will include thinking about which authors of daily Lenten prayer readings I have liked in the past and choosing a new Lenten prayer book, I will review my fasting and abstinence practices and how well I tied them to giving to the “Rice Bowl” on my desk and, most importantly, I will attempt to remind myself frequently about the purpose of our Lenten journey, which is arriving at Easter closer to God and with a joyful and open heart!

Stewardship Using an Allowance To Help Teach Stewardship

We all know that money can’t buy happiness. Wealthy people can be just as unhappy as poorer people. Rather, happiness comes from being content with what we have and feeling like we are making a difference in the world. We can put our children on the path to a happy and successful life by teaching them how to use and manage money so that it brings them contentment, fills their needs and allows them to help others.

Financial experts suggest that children should be taught to divide their allowance into three or four sections – to spend, to save, to invest and to donate. Spending covers basic needs and wants. Saving teaches patience and planning. Investing looks to the future. For children this might mean future educational needs. Donating gives kids satisfaction by allowing them to be a part of something important, like the Offertory.

Our Lord calls each of us to share what we have. He tells us, “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much and even more will be demanded of the person entrusted

with more.” (Luke 12:48) Children who learn to give away a portion of their financial blessings not only are following the Lord’s command but they also begin to discover that sharing part of their money can be very satisfying.

LITURGICAL MINISTERS FOR NEXT WEEKEND —FEBRUARY 14-15, 2015

Edwardsville Knights of Columbus 2nd Annual FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE Saturday, February 21, 2015

Our 2nd annual Father-Daughter Dance will be SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Last year we had an incredible turnout, and we hope for even more people this year. No age limitations, so Fathers of all ages, bring your daughters of all ages to enjoy a special night out. This year's theme is "Daddy's Little Sweetheart". We will be serving a spaghetti & meatball dinner with salad. We will have flowers for each young lady, a professional photographer, and lots of dancing. This is a formal event: ladies should wear

a dress, and gentlemen should wear shirt & tie and/or sport coat.

For the older Dads, have you danced with your daughter since her wedding day? Then bring her to this event. She will love the chance to dance with her Dad again, no matter how old she is. For the younger dads, a dress-up night out with Dad will be a night that those young ladies will treasure forever. Mine still talk about it 10 years later. Tickets are $20/couple, $25 if more than one daughter. Reservations should be made by Feb. 15. Please contact Scott Bayless at [email protected], for more information and/or to reserve your seats now to make sure you get a spot.!
