FIGHTING FEARONE GOOD FRIEND CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

Mark Mathews is a big-wave surfer. He dreams of being the best. Richie Vaculik, Mark’s best mate shares his love of big-wave surfing but has his own ambitions. A carpet layer by day, Richie dreams of becoming a MMA cage-fighting champion. Both are fearless, living life on the edge, daring each other to surf bigger waves, party harder and take greater risks. But when their adrenalin-seeking antics and hardened partying turns sour, it sets in motion a dramatic and life-changing series of events that threatens to derail everything they have worked so hard for.

In an instant, Mark’s big-wave surfing career is in tatters and Richie is facing a jail term. But for these two friends, giving up is not an option. It’s not the mistakes you make but how you overcome them. Their unwavering friendship gives them the courage to battle their demons, rise up from their troubled past and conquer their fears.

Fighting Fear provides a candid insight into the tumultuous life of two world-class athletes facing against-all-odds personal challenges. As a curriculum resource, the film expands and enriches students’ understanding of human experiences.

This study guide to accompany Fighting Fear, a feature docu-drama by Macario De Souza, has been written for secondary students in Years 10–12. It provides information and suggestions for learning activities in English, Health, Media, Personal Development, Physical Education and student welfare programs.

Fighting Fear is rated M and has a running time of 90 minutes.

One of the seven general capabilities of the Australian Curriculum is personal and social competence. Within this frame of reference, Fighting Fear provides opportunities for students to learn to:

» Recognise and understand their own emotions, values and strengths, have a realistic assessment of their own abilities and a well-grounded sense of self-esteem and self-confidence (Self-awareness);

» Manage their emotions and behaviour, persevere in overcoming obstacles, set personal and academic goals, develop self-discipline, resilience, adaptability and initiative (Self-management);

» Perceive and understand other people’s emotions and viewpoints, show understanding and empathy for others, identify the strengths of team members, define and accept individual and group roles and responsibilities, be of service to others (Social awareness);

» Form positive relationships, manage and influence the emotions and moods of others, cooperate and communicate effectively with others, work in teams, build leadership skills, make decisions, resolve conflict and resist inappropriate social pressure (Social management).

Given the personal nature of some of the questions, students should be reassured that their privacy will be respected. Students could be encouraged to use an online journal to record their responses.

MARK AND RICHIE

MARK MATHEWSMark Mathews ranks amongst the world’s top big-wave surfers. For Mark, big-wave surfing isn’t just a hobby, it is his livelihood. When the swell forecast predicts waves over forty feet, that’s when Mark starts getting excited. Mark will drop everything to get to big surf. He prefers his waves thick, slabby, hollow – think Teahupoo, but even scarier – and is constantly redefining the limits of which waves humans can physically ride. When waves are flat or between injuries (unfortunately they come with the territory), Mark plays piano, the guitar, or picks up a new instrument to pass the time until he can surf again. He makes a conscious effort to keep his energy positive, especially in the weeks before a big swell. In 2007, Mark caught the wave of the day at the Monster Energy Pro at Pipeline, Hawaii, earning him global recognition, since then, Mark has been unstoppable in his quest for bigger waves.

RICHIE VACULIK Richie ‘Vas’ Vaculik grew up surfing at Maroubra Beach, Sydney. He still lives there today. After leaving school, Richie became a carpet layer, saving his wages to chase big waves in Australia and across the world. Richie claims that he is most happy when ‘surfing a new slab somewhere with a couple of mates’. Richie started training in martial arts as a way to focus his energies and keep fit in between surfing but his obvious talent prompted trainers to suggest he compete. Richie is now dedicated to MMA, with an impressive 7-1 record. He hopes to take his MMA career onto the international stage. When he is not preparing for a fight or surfing big barrels at his favourite break, Richie can be found spear-fishing or spending time with his long-time girlfriend, Lucia.

BRA BOYSMark Mathews and Richie Vaculik are Bra Boys.

The Bra Boys are an Australian surf community founded and based in Maroubra, an eastern suburb of Sydney, New South Wales. Dating back to the 1990s, the Bra Boys achieved national and international attention in 2007 with the release of a feature-length documentary entitled Bra Boys: Blood is Thicker than Water.

Bra Boys documents the cultural evolution of Maroubra and the brotherhood of the rebellious surf community known as the Bra Boys. It is their story. It explores their success in professional big wave surfing, their international reputation for hard partying and rough justice and touches on their running battle with authorities. The film shows their absolute reliance on one another to fit into a society in which they are displaced and, at times, disinterested.

Bra Boys is available on DVD. It is rated M and has a running time of 85 minutes. The film contains actual violence and moderate coarse language and themes. Teachers are advised to preview Bra Boys before using it as a classroom resource. Excerpts from the film may be shown to pursue the activities of this study guide.

BIG-WAVE SURFINGBig-wave surfing is an extreme sport in which experienced surfers paddle into or are towed onto the largest waves in the world. The sport is notoriously dangerous because of the potential consequences of wipe-outs. Certain locations around the world have become renowned for their big waves. Enthusiasts devote their lives to chasing the spectacular swells in these locations.

» Read more about big-wave surfing online at:

http://www.bigwaveawards.com.au

» Working as a class, make a PowerPoint presentation about big-wave surfing. Each student should contribute two slides to the presentation. The slide may be about a big-wave surfing location or a big-wave surfer. Your slides should include text and an image. When the slides have been collated, add a soundtrack.

What are the thrills of big-wave surfing?

What are the dangers of big-wave surfing?

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, including boxing, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, muay Thai, kickboxing, karate, judo and other styles. MMA competitions were introduced in the United States with the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1993. The sport gained international exposure and widespread publicity in United States in 1993, when jiu-jitsu fighter Royce Gracie won the first Ultimate Fighting Championship tournament, subduing three challengers in a total of just five minutes, sparking a revolution in martial arts.

The UFC is currently the largest MMA promotion company worldwide. The Australian Fighting Championship (AFC) is Australia’s leading MMA brand. The AFC has been formed to unite the Australian MMA industry and bring mainstream awareness to the sport. By showcasing the best Australian talent alongside international wildcards, the AFC delivers the highest quality MMA events in the country.

» There is a large number of distinct styles and schools of martial art. Have you ever practised a martial art? What are the benefits of practising a martial art?

» ‘I definitely think MMA is a good outlet for kids. It teaches them discipline.’ B.J. PENN

» B.J. Penn is an American mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner who competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is known for his willingness to fight anyone regardless of weight class. Richie Vaculik trains with B.J. Penn during his preparation for the event.

FIRST IMPRESSIONSProvide students with an opportunity to share their impressions of Fighting Fear. This may be achieved by asking students to respond to the question, ‘Did you enjoy Fighting Fear?’ Teachers may prefer to ask students to discuss moments of the film via a series of adjectives. For example, students could be asked

to name the moments that they found compelling or jaw-dropping or uplifting or cautionary or inspiring.

Prior to tackling the following discussion points, ask students to respond to the question, ‘What is the message of Fighting Fear?’

‘Why do some people take risks, while others are afraid to?’

» When Mark was just a kid, he was terrified of big waves. His mum would have to swim out and rescue him.

What were your childhood fears? Did you find the courage to face your fears? Did you just outgrow your fears?

» Is adolescence scary?

» Recall those moments when Mark and Richie were scared and discuss how they responded to fear.

» What gives you courage when life proves challenging?

» Mark and Richie acknowledge that big-wave surfing and MMA are physically and emotionally demanding pursuits that require them to take risks.

Why do something that makes you scared? Is fear thrilling?

Shipstern Bluff in Tasmania is one of the most dangerous surfing locations in the world. It even has its own website <http://www.shipsterns.com>. Fighting Fear provides an account of Mark’s wipe-out at Shipsterns. Mark describes the experience of being thrown about by the swell and regaining consciousness underwater surrounded by silence. It was only when he hit the surface of the water that he felt pain and feared that he had broken his neck. The physical rehabilitation was extensive but the psychological rehabilitation took longer. Mark’s childhood fears returned. He could not move beyond the dangers of big-wave surfing and the realisation that he was not invincible.

Mark discovered a philosophy that enabled him to face his fears in one of his mother’s self-help books. In the end, three questions caused him to change his thought process and return to the surf.

The three questions that Mark relied on were:

Is that thought true?

How does that thought make you feel?

Who would you be without that thought?

» Do you have a strategy that helps you tackle life’s more daunting experiences?

» Does Mark’s approach hold any appeal?

» Use Mark’s claims to discuss his decision to return to Shipsterns:

‘Shipsterns had got the better of me.’

‘Having to say to myself “if I can overcome this fear then nothing’s going to scare me.”’

‘Having Rich there at that moment gave me that little edge of confidence … He had my back. If I was going to wipe-out, he was going to be there.’

‘The wave just drew me up into the lip.’

‘Please don’t hit the bottom.’

» ‘I’d gone from rock bottom to being on top of the world.’

» ‘I’ve never felt happier.’

‘I’m back.’

‘Everybody loses. It’s a part of life.’ KELLY SLATER

Slater’s philosophy on how to handle defeat is borne of experience.

Fighting Fear takes us to Richie’s Cage Fighting Championship World Title Fight at Hordern Pavilion. While Richie’s friends wait in the audience for the fight to start, Richie waits alone. The fight is a huge stepping stone for Richie requiring him to fight five five-minute rounds with an experienced opponent. He nervously asks, ‘Why am I even doing this?’ as he anticipates the bout. Richie loses the fight.

» How does Richie respond to his first MMA defeat?

» What do Mark and Richie learn from Slater’s attitude to defeat?

‘Why do some people reach their full potential and others find it more difficult?’

» What do we learn about Mark and Richie’s childhood? How does this information shape our opinion of Mark and Richie?

» What type of men are Mark and Richie? Do you find them admirable?

» What statement do you think Fighting Fear makes about masculinity?

» What we choose to do, defines who we are.

Mark has always surfed big waves and Richie has given up laying carpet to become a MMA world champion.

What does their decision to choose these sports as careers tell us about who they are?

» How do you think Mark and Richie would define the term ‘full potential’? What personal qualities will allow them to reach their ‘full potential’?

» Of Richie, Mark says, ‘It’s not in his nature to give up’. Do you think this claim is also an apt description of Mark?

DISCUSSION 3: FRIENDSHIP‘Can one good friend change your life?’

» Mark and Richie’s friendship dates back to when they were both kids learning to surf. Their friendship has remained constant throughout their lives.

What else do we learn about their friendship?

» Who do you regard as your friends? Why are these friendships valuable?

» ‘I just wanted him there with me.’ MARK

‘You’re pretty lucky to have a mate like that …’ RICHIE

When Mark believed that he could make a career out of big-wave surfing, he wanted it for Richie as well.

Why was mutual recognition important to Mark?

» Mark and Richie share a love of big-wave surfing. Write a personal narrative about a pursuit that you and your friends have in common. Aim to write 500–750 words.

» ‘The perfect thing to get his mind off what was going on.’ MARK

» Just before Richie’s court case, Mark insists that Richie should surf Shipsterns. Richie is hesitant but Mark insists.

What does Mark’s decision reveal about their friendship?

» ‘I don’t reckon that there’s any way that either of us on our own would have got to where we are now.’ MARK

The Bra Boys live the philosophy that they are their brothers’ keeper.

What does the term ‘brother’s keeper’ imply?

Drawing on Fighting Fear, what do you think the term means to Mark and Richie?

Do you think that it is a philosophy that should be accepted without question?

» Use the following prompt to write an expository essay:

‘Our relationships with others help us to define who we are.’

Draw on evidence from Fighting Fear and other relevant sources to shape your response.

‘How often do we stop and think about the choices we are making?’

» ‘You won’t’ is Mark and Richie’s motto.

Is such a motto empowering or is it reckless?

‘But we thought to get the respect of the older guys, we had to be like that out of the water as well. So instead of trying to out-surf our mates, we wanted to out-drink, out-party and out-fight them.’ MARK

The Maroubra surf culture that had created Mark and Richie, giving them the careers they had wanted as kids started to destroy them.

» What do you know about the Bra Boys?

Do you think Mark and Richie challenge the media stereotype of a Bra Boy?

» ‘We’ve done a lot of stupid and reckless things in our life but I guess it’s a part of growing up.’ RICHIE

Do you agree with Richie? Is being ‘stupid’ and ‘reckless’ a rite of passage?

» Are some types of risks worth taking? Is there a difference between taking risks and being reckless?

‘I promised myself I’d never put myself in that situation again. But I was young and stupid and a month down the track, I got blind drunk all over again I and ended up in more trouble.’ MARK

Mark gives an account of the punch-up that resulted in him being charged with assault occasioning bodily harm on a uniformed police officer. He was lucky to avoid a long jail sentence. Despite promising himself that he wouldn’t find himself in the same situation ever again, he did. Alcohol and anger got the better of him.

Alcohol also got the better of Richie. Lucy couldn’t keep up with Richie’s ‘party hard’ philosophy and their relationship came to an amicable end. In January 2008, partying brought Richie’s whole world crashing down. An argument in a bar escalated into a brawl and resulted in Richie being charged with grievous bodily harm. He received no conviction.

Having hit rock bottom, Mark and Richie decided to put aside negative

and abusive ways of behaving. They decided to make less reckless and more positive choices.

» Drawing on Fighting Fear, what factors are shown to play a part in Mark and Ritchie’s redemption?

» Both Mark and Richie acknowledge that the ‘rock bottom’ moments of their existence became defining moments in their existence.

What moment or moments in your life have defined who you are? Write a personal narrative about one of these moments. Aim to write 500–750 words.

» Use the following prompt to write an expository or a persuasive essay:

‘Mistakes help shape our identity.’

Draw on evidence from Fighting Fear and other relevant sources to shape your response.

» Why spend the whole night surfing?

‘Do the heroes you choose affect your life?’

» Everyone has heroes – figures they look up to and wish to emulate.

Who did Mark and Richie regard as heroes when they were kids growing up in Maroubra?

Who are their heroes now?

Are you ever too old to have heroes?

What purpose do heroes serve?

Allow students time to write in response to some or all of these questions.

» Write a personal narrative about you and your hero. Aim to write 500–750 words.

» What do we learn about Mark and Richie’s ambitions?

What are your ambitions for this year?

What are your ambitions for the future?

Is it important to be ambitious?

Do ambitions make life more meaningful?

Allow students time to write in response to some or all of these questions.

Twenty years ago, Surfing World Magazine described the way to survive life in Maroubra:

Competition is the key to life here. You have to constantly outdo the other guy in every aspect of life – out-bag him, outrage him, out-surf, out-play, out-drink – write him off, chew him up and swallow. It is the written theme that continually pushes you. You either learn to live with it or you’re not a Maroubra person. It’s called aimin’ up.

» Does Fighting Fear suggest that ‘aimin’ up’ has shaped Mark and Richie’s perspective on life?

Do you think that Mark and Richie’s relentless quest to achieve their ambitions has grounded them?

What price are both men prepared to pay to realise their ambitions?

» Documentaries tell real stories about real people. A documentary is not a literal recording of real life, but a constructed reality that tells a version of the truth. Fighting Fear is a feature docu-drama because some scenes are re-enactments of reality.

Why do you think the director chose to make a docu-drama? Did you find the re-enactments of moments of Mark and Richie’s lives convincing?

» Documentaries are rarely objective. Consciously or unconsciously, the filmmakers’ personal biases are going to influence their decisions. Who is the director of Fighting Fear? Why do you think he decided to make a film about Mark Mathews and Richie Vaculik? Do you think the director has created an honest portrayal of the men and their friendship?

» Understanding Fighting Fear involves an investigation of filmmaking techniques employed in telling the story.

Working with a partner, describe the way the filmmaker of Fighting Fear has used one filmmaking technique. Use PowerPoint to present your description to the class. Limit your presentation to four slides. Your presentation should use words and images. You may incorporate video and audio clips.

» Watch the trailer for Fighting Fear. How does it position a potential audience?

» How does the opening sequence of Fighting Fear foreshadow the ideas of the film, introduce the subjects and establish viewer expectations?

» ‘We are ecstatic to have Joel Edgerton as the narrator of the film. It was such a great fit given his current role in Warrior and his personal love of surfing, plus as soon as he saw the film, he connected with [its] core theme of friendship and wanted to be a part of [it].’ MICHAEL LAWRENCE

Who is Joel Edgerton? Do you think Edgerton was an appropriate choice of narrator? Is it important to choose a narrator who has an affinity for the subject of the film?

Edgerton speaks about his role as the narrator of Fighting Fear in the following interview: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQiufLdf7lc>.

» What is gained from including interviews with athletes such as ten-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater; two-time world surfing champion Mick Fanning; big-wave surfer Bruce Irons; three-time women’s world surfing champion Steph Gilmore and two-time UFC world champion B.J. Penn?

The majority of the music was produced by Twice As Nice.

Hailing from Melbourne, Twice As Nice is a production duo, comprised of Nick Audino and Lewis Hughes. Twice As Nice pride themselves on the diverse range of styles that they produce and write, citing the eclectic Australian music scene as an important influence upon them. Despite the fact their original style was hip-hop, it has now evolved to include a wide variety of genres. Fighting Fear is their first feature film score.

Australian acts Bliss n Eso, Hermitude, The Beautiful Girls, Mat. McHugh, Rufus, Kid Mac and Sarah McLeod also contributed to the soundtrack.

» Working as a class, discuss how music complements the narrative, establishes concerns, shapes our understanding of the characters, creates mood and evokes particular emotional responses.

» Spend time as a class discussing the filmmaker’s use of action footage. How does it portray big-wave surfing and MMA?

» Recall the closing sequence of Fighting Fear. Is it an effective way to resolve the story?

KEY CREATIVESMACARIO DE SOUZA DirectorMacario De Souza is a 28-year-old filmmaker and musician. Born in Sydney, Australia, he gained an interest in film at age fourteen when he borrowed a Hi-8 camera from his sister. Two years later he bought his own mini-DV camera and started filming his mates surfing at Maroubra Beach.

After graduating in 2001 from South Sydney High School, De Souza completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, majoring in time-based art, at the University of New South Wales’ College of Fine Arts. His first film project, Ours, focused on his lifestyle pursuit of surfing. The award-winning short film was followed by another short, The Hard Way and Grommets.

De Souza’s first feature-length film, Bra Boys: Blood is Thicker than Water, is the highest grossing documentary in Australian history. The film was edited in a bedroom of his modest family unit near Maroubra Beach, the home of the Bra Boys.

Since then, De Souza has worked on South Side Story, a six-part observational documentary on one of Australia’s most famous Rugby League clubs in history, the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He also produced two seasons of Fox 8’s hit reality series, Football Superstar.

SUE MASTERS ProducerSue Masters’ career in film began in Los Angeles writing episodes of Love Boat. She is now one of Australia’s most acclaimed producers and executive producers. In 1990, Masters produced Brides of Christ, which to this day is the highest rating miniseries on Australian television, as wells as three seasons of SeaChange. Masters was Head of Drama at the ABC during its most successful creative and commercially successful era for Australian drama and then as Head of Drama at Network Ten, she was responsible for such award-winning series as The Secret Life of Us, Jessica, The Joanna Lees Story, The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant and many other series and serials, including Neighbours. In 2009 and 2010, Sue was executive producer on the award-winning series The Circuit for SBS TV, before returning to producing with Millie.
